A Great Find!!!.......2007-08-26
I stumbled across this book while checking out at my local library. I have to say that this book was a great find! I got home w/ it and could not put it down. I immediately took out my notebook and made notes. Unfortunately I could only keep this book for two weeks, so I made a promise that I would buy it one day when I had the extra money. This book really inspires and teaches. Ms. Finney shows you how to build your wardrobe and even make your own products at home to pamper yourself. I signed up for her daily newsletter and even her fashion gab forum. I am on it everyday to soak up all of this fashionista's knowledge. As a treat, she even sent out invites to her fashion gab forum and after you completed so many posts, she sends you a copy of her book. I received mine today and it's signed also. This book will defintely be my go book and it stays in my tote bag when I am out shopping. Again, a great resource!!!
great find.......2007-08-25
This guide is a concise, well written, informative and funny guide to the world of savvy shopping. It's particularly aimed at those of us who know very little about what's out there and how to get the best deal. The book is a quick read. The websites provided are awesome. I now have a crick in my neck from checking them out (and ordering from them!). I can't decide whether to share the wealth of information or keep it to myself! Have fun!
If you like thrift and 2nd hand stores...........2007-08-24
I personally prefer to buy new clothes and not used. This book focused a lot on incorporating 2nd hand clothing. I'm so disappointed with this book, I plan on returning it!
Love It! Great tips even for pro bargain shoppers.......2007-08-09
I just read this book, and I have to say, I've found my shopping soulmate! As a professional shopper who's shopping motto is "Don't buy it unless it's at least 90% off retail," I didn't expect to learn much from this book. After all, for the last 7 years, I've traveled the country in search of bargains to pass on to my ebay customers. I often hear salesclerks gasp in amazement as I buy a large bag full of designer items for under $100.
But this book goes way beyond the basics. Written in a straightforward, upbeat style that's fun to read, it covers the full spectrum of tips and tricks for buying a designer wardrobe for less.
My copy is now thoroughly dog-eared and underlined, and I'm ready to take my shopping to the next level. The Budget Fashionista offers amazing tips for scoring the best deals at outlets, online, at consignment shops and even at department stores. I love how she's so specific about when, where, and how to score the best deals. I learned about some new sources I hadn't considered, like DSW Shoe Warehouse, Loehmanns online, and sample sales.
The Personal Style quiz was a great tool for analyzing what I already have that I love, helping me focus on the pieces that really build my wardrobe. In the style of the "Look For Less" tv show, she even explains in detail how she helped a friend buy a full professional wardrobe for under $600. This book is so inspiring and fun to read, and I recommend it for anyone, from a novice to a professional, that wants to buy more great clothes for less money.
The book is Okay..........2007-08-07
I read this book in about two days. It was a quick read and she has some good tips for budget shopping, but I don't appreciate all the stuff about consignment shops, pruchasing off ebay and trading clothes. I will not buy used clothing, who knows where it has been or who the previous owner was.
It's nice to find a good deal at an Saks Off Fifth or Nordstrom Rack, but if outlets and discount retailers are the only place to go then that doesn't work for me. I am not the type to go digging through every rack of clearance items hoping I find something. I do appreciate the insight on looking for certain things like basic tees from low-end retailers but the repeating references to Old Navy and Walmart is starting to get to me. Sales are always nice, but if you are in the average size range whether for shoes or clothes you will not find as many good deals as someone on either extremes. Not everything in the book is new, but it does give you insight to hear it/read it from someone else. Take what you need from the book, but don't follow all the guidelines religously.
Book Description
It's no secret that most New Yorker readers flip through the magazine to look at the cartoons before they ever lay eyes on a word of the text. But what isn't generally known is that over the decades a growing cadre of women artists have contributed to the witty, memorable cartoons that readers look forward to each week. Now Liza Donnelly, herself a renowned cartoonist with the New Yorker for more than twenty years, has written this wonderful, in-depth celebration of women cartoonists who have graced the pages of the famous magazine from the Roaring Twenties to the present day. An anthology of funny, poignant, and entertaining cartoons, biographical sketches, and social history all in one, Funny Ladies offers a unique slant on 20th-century and early 21st-century America through the humorous perspectives of the talented women who have captured in pictures and captions many of the key social issues of their time. As someone who understands firsthand the cartoonist's art, Donnelly is in a position to offer distinctive insights on the creative process, the relationships between artists and editors, what it means to be a female cartoonist, and the personalities of the other New Yorker women cartoonists, whom she has known over the years.
Funny Ladies reveals never-before-published material from The New Yorker archives, including correspondence from Harold Ross, Katharine White, and many others. In addition, Donnelly has interviewed all of the living female cartoonists, many of their male counterparts, and editors and writers: Roger Angel, Lee Lorenz, Lillian Ross, Harriet Walden (legendary editor William Shawn's secretary), Bob Mankoff, William Hamilton, Eldon Dedini, Dana Fradon, Frank Model, Bob Web, Sam Gross, Gahan Wilson, Joe Farris, among others.
Combining a wealth of information with an engaging and charming narrative, plus more than seventy cartoons, along with photographs and self-portraits of the cartoonists, Funny Ladies beautifully portrays the art and contributions of the brilliant female cartoonists in America's greatest magazine.

A history of how women performed in the narrow career path of cartoonist.......2007-03-19
"The New Yorker" is universally considered to be the best magazine and it regularly runs cartoons. Unlike many other cartoons noted for their in-your-face approach, the message of the cartoons in "The New Yorker" is generally very subtle. Many great cartoonists have had their work featured in the magazine, and some of them were women. This is their story.
It is one that in general is concurrent with what happened in the rest of society. In the early years, there were few career opportunities open to women and their work was evaluated in different ways. The twenties were a time of advancement, but the hard reality of the depression in the thirties had an overall negative effect on the status of women. Once the Second World War began, women were needed in every capacity, so their stock once again rose, only to fall back down after the war and into the reactionary fifties. Finally, the overall advancements in the role of women in the sixties and seventies destroyed all barriers to women cartoonists.
Through it all, the pioneers struggled with their drawings and captions, using them to make important statements about the world that existed around them. It was a world that they struggled against, yet eventually emerged triumphant through the success of those of their gender that succeeded them. As much as anything, this book is a chronicle of the emergence of women from the "pedestal of assumed inferiority" to one where their work is appreciated, respected and expected.
A wonderful, vivid overview........2006-09-24
FUNNY LADIES: THE NEW YORKER'S GREATEST WOMEN CARTOONISTS AND THEIR CARTOONS could easily have been featured in our 'Cartoons and Graphic Novels' section, but is reviewed here for its ability to appeal beyond the usual confines of the cartoonist fan's world. Over the decades a growing core of female artists has been creating New Yorker cartoons weekly: Liza Donnelly, herself a New Yorker cartoonist for over twenty years, provides a history of women's humor and its evolution, pairing an anthology of cartoons with a survey of the genre in a wonderful, vivid overview.

Book Description
Elmer Bliss, nave and implacably optimistic champion of the Southern Californian way, uses his newspaper column to defend the movie world's indiscretions from the scandal sheets. As Tinseltown parties end in murder, Elmer innocently runs sunny accounts of the stars' wholesome lives. His crowning moment comes as Miss Viola Lake, Hollywood's favorite clean-cut starlet, is about to be accused of drug abuse and sexual promiscuity during a murder trial that threatens to blow the lid off the film colony. With his good intentions at the ready, Elmer leaps, like a matinee idol, to Viola's protection. With intimate ease, Anita Loos sets up a fondly sardonic and devastatingly funny tour of the glorious artifice and excess that is Hollywood: tasteless fashions, bizarre religious sects, mass murder, sex, divorce, extravagant morals, industry nepotism, and vacuous inhabitants-fresh from the Midwest-wandering the boulevards in search of fame and fortune.
Customer Reviews:
Read the book, forget the intro........2003-10-30
More excellent writing from Anita Loos. The intro by Kathy Leete, (whoever that is), is a waste of time.
This is very much a period piece in the model of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Loos bring to life a world long since gone, (Hollywood in the 20s and 30s). The illustrations are very period. Worth reading if you are into that sort of thing.
To me an author is successful if she can create a world and bring you into it. Anita Loos is such an author.
My only criticism is that I wish this book were longer.

Great for shooting technique but not for DV editing.......2001-02-20
Excellent book for beginners & intermediates to video shooting. Covers all basics such as lighting, composition, audio, panning, shooting for different specific situations etc. Lots of diagrams and pictures that author uses to illustrate points.
However the editing section is only aimed at analog devices. There is no information on digital video cameras or frame rates and fields etc for PC based DV editing.
Terrific manual for using your camcorder and editing!.......1996-11-16
I found this to be a terific manual for using your camcorder
and editing your videos. The only drawback is that there
isn't a sequel in print at this time! More!
I film, produce, host and edit a local access television
show and this book helped tremendously.
It is written to address the beginners questions as well as
the "imtermediate" level.
The local access television station is ordering more for
manuals.

Holiday Piggyback Songs.......2001-07-07
This is a great book for teachers who need help in finding simple songs for young children to sing. All the tunes used are quite familiar and anyone can use it...even if they can't carry a tune! Most of the songs are short and simple enough to teach by rote. There are also other versions of the Piggyback songs available. A MUST HAVE for early child educators!
Piggyback songs.......2000-11-03
This is a good book for finding simple songs to the tune of songs we already know for almost any holiday.

Luc Sante, General Editor
McGoorty is master billiards writer Robert Byrne’s racy account of the life of Danny McGoorty, a billiards champion of that bygone era when cue artists were often scam artists and pool rooms were held to be dens of iniquity. Hustler and hobo, womanizer and fashion plate, McGoorty was at once eyewitness to Capone’s Chicago and the feats of greats like Willie Hoppe and Willie Mosconi. In an all-American voice at once sarcastic, profane, humorous, and chock full of colorful lingo, he relates his colorful and seedy life and times with a unique style and brio.

“Pool hustler, hobo, alcoholic, ladies’ man, and tournament player... McGoorty was a Runyonesque character and a first-rate raconteur. The result is a memoir that should rack up many readers, even among those that don’t know a cue from a swizzle stick.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
“At times funny, occasionally filthy, here and there exaggerated, but it’s an entertaining story of a guy who doesn’t try to pass himself off as any sort of giant at the table: just a fellow who loved the game.”
WILLIE MOSCONI, NINETEEN-TIME WORLD STRAIGHT POOL CHAMPION
Customer Reviews:
The tale of a life wasted.......2005-02-20
Danny McGoorty was a gifted pool and billiards player. He was also a lazy, drunk petty thief. He spent his life trying his best to avoid honest work. He took as much as he could get from everyone that crossed his path without ever giving anything back. He died bitter and broke.
There, now you don't need to read the book.
Have a sense of humor..........2004-10-25
This isn't "Rudy" Ruettiger and it's not an "inspirational" sports biography. You're not going to learn much about how to play billiards either. If you read this expecting some moral triumph, you are going to miss the point. McG was a sad, pathetic drunk who told truths, lies, half-truths about his failed career as a billaird player. This said, he had a real wit and a flair for pegging people. More than anything, this is a good Depression-era American period piece. It's also a look inside the mind of one candid, unscrupulous character. McG is a funny guy, a sad guy, a nice guy and a wicked guy. Even when he lies he's sincere. If you ever knew a bum, drunk or poolroom hustler you liked and hated at the same time, give it a shot. But this book doesn't belong on the shelf with Byrne's instruction books, or really even with the other billiards biographies; it belongs next to the other volumes of the Library of Larceny: Ponzi, Liebling and Sutton.
McGoorty.......2004-08-23
I can't imagine anyone wanting to write a book about this man.He was nothing but a vulgar, lazy, lying alcoholic.Half of the things that he says are nothing but B.S.For instance,Chicago police officers murdering suspected gangsters @ black men for 200$ a pop.I could go on @ on but you should get the idea.Save your money. As for me, I am going to line my cats litter box with my copy.
Pool's Fool.......2004-04-14
This book is one of the few biograghy's i've read that had a true voice of the subject. Gritty, smutty, vulgar and incitful. It tells the tale of the wayward life led by one of this country's greatest pool and billiards players, witten from audiotapes by Robert Byrne, Mcgoorty comes to life.
If vulgar doen't bother you.......2001-11-13
This is another wonderfully written book by Robert Byrne. It shows the vivid life of a pool hustler/hobo/drunk/real person that was in his prime in the 1920's-1950's. If gives a real sense of McGoorty and his life in what apear to be his own words. He also shares extremely colorful insight, his opinion, into several famous and well known professional billiard players and World Champions of his era. It is full of real life experiences during those times; however, the language and crude tone are very vulgar. If you're not offended it is an enjoyable interesting read.

Another powerful, practical book from Dan.......2007-07-28
Have you ever spent hours writing the perfect sales letter, only to send it out and get little or no response? This information-packed book is sure to show you where you went wrong. And it takes you through all the basic steps and concepts that go into writing amazingly effective sales letters. Of course, there's no substitute for practice, but this book will get you off to a solid start.
Known as the "No B.S." guy, Dan Kennedy is a crack copywriter and consultant who regularly helps clients make millions of dollars. From my personal experience (and I have a shelf full of Dan Kennedy's stuff), all his books are worth their weight in gold. But be warned, he has a straight-up, slightly sarcastic style of communication that you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. And I confidently recommend anything and everything Dan Kennedy writes or sells.
Great book with great ideas simplified.......2007-06-23
This book is as good as a thick textbook on copywriting. Mr. Kennedy doesnt waste words and gets to the point in every sentence in this book. Also of great interest are copies of sales letters he wrote for his clients.
What I liked about this book was chapter/step 6: Getting your sales letter read. There are generous examples of attention-getting headlines and fill in the blank headlines. A lot of these caught my attention and I'm very picky about which emails to open because I've looked at thousands of them, but the samples in this book are still good to use.
I like this book because it is like AWAI's copywriting course condensed into one book.
Read this book today and start writing better copy.
A Fantastic Reference Guide.......2007-06-13
I received this book in the mail and read the whole thing in one night! It was a very practical, no-nonsense, reference guide. This one has it's own special place on my desk. Buy it!
