A splendid book........2007-10-01
A beautiful book, showing superb examples of belts from all over the world. This book is one, of a series of six, detailing ethnic jewelry from around the world. All of the pieces shown come from the collection of a Belgian couple, who have been collecting since the 1950s. The book contains magnificent, color photos, which show items at actual size, in many cases. My only criticism of the book, concerns the examples of Native American jewelry from the Southwestern United States. None of the Southwestern items were made by known artists, nor are the items of outstanding quality or design. The other books in the series share this same shortcoming.

How to make yourself miserable for the rest of the century is hillarious self satire that makes you laugh out loud and realize the myriad of ways in which we undermine ourselves. This book DEFINITELY does not take itself too seriously (i.e., it is NOT a self help book in any literal sense) and is amusingly thorough in the detailed instructions it provides on how to be miserable. For instance, in the section on how to make yourself miserable in romatic relationships, there is a whole section on "basic relationship undermining manuevers" such as "The Great Love Test", designed to elicit, from your companion (after several detailed steps) a hint of doubt about your relationship that can be seized upon to make yourself miserable. Oh, man...and then there is the "reject me posture" recommended for social gatherings. Though there are some corny parts, this book on the whole is a howler--indeed, I have found that my my most depressive friends find it the funniest : )

Anna May Wong was perhaps the best known Chinese American actresses during Hollywood's golden age, a free spirit and embodiment of the flapper era much like Louise Brooks. She starred in over fifty movies between 1919 and 1960, sharing the screen with such luminaries as Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Marlene Dietrich. Born in Los Angeles in 1905, Wong was the second daughter of six children born to a laundryman and his wife. Obsessed with film at a young age, she managed to secure a small part in a 1919 drama about the Boxer Rebellion. Her most famous film roles were in The Thief of Baghdad, Old San Francisco, and Shanghai Express opposite Dietrich. Despite these successes, instances of overt racism plagued Wong's career. When it came time to make a film version of Pearl Buck's The Good Earth, she was passed over for the Austrian-born actress, Luise Rainer. In a narrative that recalls both the gritty life in Los Angeles's working-class Chinese neighborhoods and the glamour of Hollywood at its peak, Graham Hodges recounts the life of this elegant, beautiful, and underappreciated screen legend.

Good Summer Reading.......2007-08-12
This book is a good summer read. It is a good combination of academia and effective storytelling. For younger readers this will help to illuminate some of the constraints people of color were burdened with vs. Hollywood etc. This is a charming and sympathetic portrait of a beautiful and talented artist. More stills of the lovely Anna May would have been most welocme. There were so few women of color who were "allowed" to be glamourous,beautiful and cultured...that Anna May retained her dignity under these conditions is a victory to be celebrated.

... and it still is. This book gets all of the facts but none of the story. It's disappointing most of all for what it could have been, given the huge amount of time the author obviously spent researching his subject.
HODGES BRILLIANT SHINING LIGHT.......2005-12-07
Professor Hodges locked me in his basement and made me read Anna May Wong over and over and over and OVER again while wearing a leather motercycle yamaka. He fed me nothing but scraps of fatty bacon. she was INTOXICATING. I directed my MALE GAZE at this modern marvel. This masterpiece. If you have not read it, YOU MUST. Bask in the radiance of this brilliant man.
Incontournable.......2005-06-24
Wong really deserves to be known. Some actors and actresses has been forgotten, obscured by the BIG ones. It is great to have some people shed light on them. See her in "Shangai Express" where her presence is extraordinary (even besides Dietrich) and any silent movies buff shouldn't miss "Piccadilly".
I think there was a lot of details in her life to tell and maybe the author was obliged to compress this book a bit too much (the publisher's fault?)...
A good buy. Wong is "incontournable".
Anna Mae Wong Rightfully Remembered.......2005-06-20
I decided to read "Anna May Wong: From Laundryman's Daughter to Hollywood Legend" because I knew very little about Anna May Wong personally or professionally, but had heard good things about her from other fans. Having seen her image more on antique cigarette cards (stunning!) than I have on film, I was hoping to read about the types of films she appeared in, her specific roles and what her overall experience as a minority (more specifically Chinese American) actress in Hollywood entailed. Graham Russell Gao Hodges delivered that and more in his absorbing account of this sophisticated, intelligent and hardworking actress whose career made a worldwide impact but sadly was equally limited by prejudice at home and abroad.

Mixed feelings.......2004-03-16
There's no question that Richard Pask knows what he's talking about, but I am a beginner in checkers, and I found this book very daunting. After a quick introduction, the book begins to teach 9 basic strategies (2-for-1, 3-for-2, fork, rebound, breeches, etc.) along with presenting several examples of each. After that, the book then shows many miscellaneous illustrations of other moves that don't fit into the previous 9 strategies. By this time, the book is well into over 100 examples (!) with only terse commentary. I just don't find it very easy to read, and I lost interest before even getting to the later chapters.
I was much happier to find Millard Hopper's book "How to Win at Checkers" at my university library. I'm sure it is not as complete as Pask's book, but for me, it is actually enjoyable to read. I also get the feeling that the Hopper book builds on each example, introducing only one or two more logical steps between board configurations. This is something that Pask's book could have used: fewer examples, with better connections between them.
Sorry, I really want to like "Starting Out in Checkers". It seems there's a lot of good material there; it's just presented too quickly and without enough explanation.
Well Worth the Time and Money.......2003-04-10
Don't let the title of the book fool you. This book is packed with all the key elements needed to become quite effecient at playing checkers with the best of them. It gets right to the point, and reveals the strategy of the game in a clear, consise
manner. There are lots of examples, and you know from the content, that the game has been covered in a logical manner.
Every player has learned, mostly through trial and error, which game postions cause them the most difficulty. Thanks to Richard Pask, the problems and solutions are presented in a format which is easy for you to comprehend and study. This has saved me many hours of trial and error when playing real games.
I would recommend this book to anyone trying to improve thier game. The insight gained was invaluable. Checkers is truly a game of challenge, and this book just opened the door for me to be sitting in the winning seat more often.
A Complete Course of Study of High Quality.......2002-08-26
This book is the highest quality, best organized, and most thorough book on the market for beginner to intermediate study. It amounts to a complete course in checkers.
The book contains material about all facets of the game, presented in careful order, with good illustrations and other excellent learning devices (such as easy-to-remember names for various game themes). The book offers a very rare combination of accessibility for casual browsing when time is limited, and material for serious study over a more extended period. But obviously to benefit the most, a serious study of the complete book is in order. Mastering this book, in fact, should put you well ahead of the average club player, and in a good position for study of more advanced literature.
The book treats openings a bit lightly, keeping the rating from just quite reaching five stars. Four and a half stars would actually be a better call.
If your library includes this book, Reinfeld's book, and Pike's two puzzle books, you have a great checkers collection at a very modest cost.
"Starting Out In Checkers" - a great book.......2002-07-26
I have completed a first reading of all the material in this book and I am now involved in studying it more deeply. Already I can say that this is a fantastic book, with everything you need to get started and to reach an advanced level if you are serious about wanting to get good at checkers.
Some sample pages that I previously saw on the web were extremely unrepresentative of the book and they put me off buying it - but then I saw it in a bookstore - and I changed my mind!
What I particularly like about the book is the way that all the major elements of the endgame, midgame and openings are dealt with in a very systematic, methodical and thorough way. Many more key situations are dealt with (and given memorable names) than I have seen in any other book or website.
The explanations and also very clear and the examples well chosen.
Study methods and the general approach to the game are also discussed as well as the technical details. Each chapter also has a useful summary.
For the sake of this review, I looked hard for something to criticise - sorry, I couldn't find anything! Enjoy.

Delivers as advertised..........2007-09-29
Far too often I have picked up a self-help book and either set it down unread because it was pure drudgery - - or I read it to conclusion to learn that it failed to deliver the self-help mechanics that I was looking for. This book delivered. It was a quick and entertaining read and provided straightforward techniques for dealing with tough questions in a debate, a business presentation or public Q&A. Author uses many political debate anecdotes yet they are all powerful in illustrating his concepts. I was left with an excellent understanding of his recommended mechanics in dealing with tough questions. I felt that the book delivered. The chapters included:

Excellent book about dynamics of debating, Q&A sessions and challanging questions.
I'm sure, even a mommy would benefit of knowledge gained by this book... but if you are in a leader position, or contact with audience.. you must simply read and understand this book.
I'm a project manager, and ocassionally the behaviour of my co-workers made me angry. I had at least the wisdom, to not confront, just ingore them (but then, I was unhappy, 'swallowing' their verbal attacks).
Now I have at least have the idea, how to respond: '...those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all'.
So main point: you have to overcome your instinct and learn the new skills.
Excellent book. Get it.
If You Ever Find Yourself In the Line of Fire..........2006-09-23
In the Line of Fire focuses on the process and dynamics of answering questions in front of important audiences. It provides excellent mechanics to prepare for formal Q&A sessions as well as ad hoc situations. The book is rich in anecdotes - although it may go a bit too far analyzing U.S. Presidential election debates over the past 30 years.
The process and tactics presented in the book complement the more simplistic (yet effective!) guidelines provided in Great Demo! (ISBN 059534559X). In the Line of Fire is an excellent resource for the advancing presenter/demo practitioner and the seasoned veteran.
This is one of a series of books by Jerry Weissman on presentation skills and methods, including Presenting to Win (ISBN 0131875108) - which I also recommend.
