Customer Reviews:
A complete & practical resource.......2007-05-23
Cam Foote's book is a complete resource for new freelancers and a great "reality check" for experienced creatives. I have read his material for many years and always found it practical, clear, realistic, and helpful. Although his focus may seem to be almost entirely on graphic designers, as a copywriter I found most of his information applicable to my own business.
The Business Side of Creativity gets right down to business. .......2007-03-30
I read a lot of business books so I tend to think I won't get much out of any one book. That's not the case with this book. I highly recommend the book to anyone who works in any kind of creative/freelance setting.
Cameron Foote really gets to the heart of the details of creative business. Most books like this take a 10,000 foot view of all the issues. I end up being frustrated with not really learning tactics, just strategies. With this book, even the generic business issues are dealt with in a way that's relevant to creative/freelance businesses.
When I first got the book I skipped to the chapter on how to go after the right business. I then read the chapters on how to make money in the business. After those chapters I realized there wasn't anything in the book I wanted to skip. I wound up reading the whole book back to back (and for a business book that's a big compliment--at least coming from me).
This may sound like a glowing review--that's because it is. I was very impressed with the level of detail and relevancy the book has to what I wanted to know. I found a few mistakes I was making with the way I was running my own business. I used the tips Foote gave and improved the issues immediately.
One last reason you might consider this book--in the Appendix there's a ton of helpful resources. Not only that, if you log on to the author's website, you can find about two times the forms found in the book. I wound up using 3 forms the author gives away on a daily basis.

Customer Reviews:
A Creative's Must Have!.......2006-10-20
This book is a wake up call to the Creative! It completely opened my eyes to the many things to think about and plan for when leaving your secure job, and going out on your own. Extremely well written, with a plethora of knowledge on the subject. A complete eye opener. A MUST HAVE for the Creative who is planning on going freelance, or starting their own business. Very informative and necessary to read in order to succeed on your own. Very exciting, I could barely put it down!
Very helpful for a new freelancer.......2006-08-24
I'm starting a sole-proprietor (one-person) freelance design business and I have found this book to be extremely helpful. It manages to be realistic about what to expect while also providing encouragement that if you prepare well and work smart, you have the opportunity to reach your financial goals. The book has made me consider contracts carefully and has given me valuable suggestions (for example, setting up standards such as "I can't accept jobs for which I can bill less than 8 hours' work"), thinking about what kinds of clients I want to attract in my business, and so on. It has important points to consider if you are locating your business outside a large metropolitan area. I recommend it for anyone who is starting out - or considering starting out - on a solo creative business.
Foote's books address different business models.......2004-08-28
According to the author's website at http://www.creativebusiness.com/books.lasso The Business Side of Creativity addresses freelancing and the basics of pricing, selling, and running a SMALL design or marketing communications business. The Creative Business Guide to Running a Graphic Design Business focuses on the management of a MULTIPERSON organization. The website gives a summary on the various chapters of each book.
Worth $20.00.......2004-08-09
I started out excited about this book, then quickly realized much of what the author had to say was outdated at best, not the best advice on numerous occasions, but yet the book contained some valuable information. A bit stoneage as far as business marketing practices. One hundred pages on setting up your own studio/small business with personnel (No, thank you). If working as a freelancer in the graphics or copy arenas is your thing, its worth paying $20.00 to get something out of it.
YOUR BUSINESS BIBLE.......2004-03-26
This is such a comprehensive book. If you have any question about how to run a business, let alone a creative one, this book is the only one you'll need.

Book Description
Here, in more than 1,500 full-color, specially drawn illustrations, is the most comprehensive and detailed history and sourcebook of twentieth-century jewelry ever published. From the 1900s to the year 2000, John Peacock charts the development of every kind and style of jewelry for both women and men: brooches, earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, buckles, dress clips, hair ornaments, rings, watches, cufflinks, and more. Both precious jewelry and costume jewelry appear, as does novelty jewelry.
John Peacock is the doyen of fashion illustration. His many books on men's and women's fashion and accessories form an unparalleled library for students, collectors, and fashion enthusiasts alike. Many years of research for this book, using paintings, photographs, and the jewelry itself, have allowed him to reproduce in meticulous detail a host of representative pieces from every year of the century. Arranged in twenty-year sections, the pictures are accompanied by complete descriptions of each piece, including details of materials, stones, designs, fastenings, mounts, and surrounds.
These highly detailed drawings allow the reader to see how the styles of the great twentieth-century designers and jewelry housesamong them Lalique, Cartier, Chaumet, Chanel, Jensen, Verdura, Schlumberger, Haskell, Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Tiffany & Co.have filtered down to mass-produced and costume jewelry. Every style is represented: Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts pieces of the early twentieth century; Art Deco of the twenties and thirties; cocktail jewelry of the forties and fifties; Pop Art creations of the sixties and seventies; flashy, ostentatious jewelry of the eighties; and more delicate, retro jewelry of the nineties. The invaluable reference section includes biographies of the century's leading international jewelers and a concise bibliography. Over 1500 color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Totally not happy with it!!!.......2007-05-12
This can only be a reference book, flip it over once and you'll get bored. Also, don't expect to find good pictures. I bought it at it's original cost, it's not even worth at that cost.
A colorful survey.......2004-03-19
"20th Century Jewelry: The Complete Sourcebook," by John Peacock, covers many different types of jewelry: brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, finger rings, buckles, men's cufflinks, etc. The cover boasts that the book contains over 1,500 color illustrations. These illustrations are drawings (not photographs, as is the case in many other books on jewelry). These drawings are very well done; they are lively with color and intricate detail.
The illustrated pieces reflect a rich variety of motifs and stylistic approaches: bold geometric forms, floral designs, whimsical characters, religious iconography, etc. The book also includes a section with short biographies of designers and companies; among those profiled are Boucher & Cie, Hattie Carnegie, Faberge, Rene Lalique, Paloma Picasso, Swarovski, and more.
Yes, the contents of this book are truly beautiful to look at. But I found the book's arrangement to be somewhat cumbersome. The captions to the pictures are on separate pages, often several pages away, so I found myself constantly flipping back and forth in the book just to identify the pieces. To identify a piece, you have to go to the separate page which contains small black-and-white numbered outlines of the pieces on the page you were initially looking at. These numbers are tied to a set of captions next to the key diagram. It struck me as an excessively complicated system; I have seen other jewelry overview books which keep the captions and illustrations on the same page in a more user-friendly system. Still, the beauty and variety within this book make it worthwhile.

"busty female announcer unit Haruka & Tammy" - also enter the scene, and while manager Tachibana is interested in them, they're only interested in Ono's cakes. Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)
ASIN: 0974889105 |
Book Description
Have you ever wanted to really reach out and touch or pull or poke or even grope a politician? Well, now's your chance, pat the politician is the "feel good" political book of the year.
pat the politician is a hilarious touch and feel political parody of pat the bunny, one of the best-selling children's books of all time. Like the original, you'll find Paul and Judy on every spread--but now they're all grown up, registered to vote, and eager to interact with the likes of Bill and Barbara, George and George, Ronald and Arnold, and more.
Go along with Paul and Judy as they get "in touch" with some of their favorite politicians. It's a modern day take-off, ideal for today's disillusioned electorate!
Customer Reviews:
A real winner!.......2006-03-22
This book is such a welcome relief from all the scandal that happens in our government. I loved looking into Bush's head, feeling Gore's personality and groping Schwarzenegger. This book has it all, especially a good laugh.
Good Natured Humor for a Bruising Political Season!.......2004-08-23
If, like me, you are more than a little fed-up with the brutal attacks and partisanship of this year's election, Pat the Politician will provide a welcome relief. A parody of the children's classic, Pat the Bunny, this humorous book pokes (and pulls) fun at folks on both sides of the aisle. Grown-up kids can pull at Barbara Bush's hair, stroke Bill Clinton's underpants, read Bush I's lips, feel Al Gore's wooden personality, and much more. This is great fun in a year that hasn't given us much to laugh about.
Funny Wry Politcal Fun.......2004-06-17
I'm giving this book to all my associates--just in time for the election--this small book will make it all bearable over the coming months with some big laughs!
Good to laugh these days!.......2004-06-03
What a fun book that could not have come at a better time! I recommend this as a gift for all occasions or just a laugh.
fair and balanced political humor........2004-06-02
Paul and Judy have grown up. They are now playing politics.
You can do different things to different US politicians.
In this book you can:
see what is inside Bush II's head (nothing), touch Bill Clinton's underpants, pull Barbara Bush's hair, grope Aronld Schwarzenegger, lengthen Nixon's nose, feel Gore's wooden personality, play hide and seek with Cheney, read Bush I's lips (quotes of good things he has said), see what Hillary is REALLY thinking (president in 2008 instead of supporting NY), and TRY to stick a scandal to Reagan's teflon personality.
This is bipartisan humor in times of partisan books.

Book Description
A hilarious collection of movie lists such as 'Twelve Things that Movie Characters Do that Real People Never Do' and 'The Worst Irish Accents in Recent Movie History,' by Richard Roeper of Ebert roeper at the Movies. just in time for the 2003 Oscar nominations! Richard Roeper has compiled his own personal favorite movie lists. Forget about such stale categories as 'Actors with the Most Oscar Nominations' and 'Films with the Biggest Budgets.' The roster of films in which 'Ben Affleck Cries Like a Big Fat Baby' is just one of the irreverent, offbeat, and inventive lists Richard is including in this book. Other lists include: - 30 Actresses Who Have Played Hookers - Eight Movies in Which Tom Cruise Plays a Cocky, Lone-Wolf Free Spirit who Must Endure Heartache Before He Learns Valuable Lessons About Life - The 10 Most Disgusting Movies Ever - The 40 Worst Movies I've Ever Seen - Fifteen Perks of Being a Movie Character
Customer Reviews:
Stolen from the internet.......2007-09-08
I was looking though this book and it's easy to look through--large type small sentences lots of white space, and found myself reading material I know this "author" did not write, because the material was lifted whole sale from items found on the internet and in books published prior to this one (try E TAILS volumes 1-3).
The essays "Ten Sure Signs a Movie Character is doomed" and "13 Great Perks of Being a Movie character" and "9 rules of drinking in the movies" were Internet forwards. The man known as Roeper didn't write this, and I suspect, much of the rest of the book was swiped from the internet.
I never did like this guy as a movie reviewer. This book "by" Roeper only confirms my feelings he's not much of a reviewer, not the least bit honest, nor worthwhile with dealing with.
Great Book to Keep Around.......2007-03-12
Sure, I have read the other reviews on here where people complain that for such a quick read, $14 is a high price to pay, and if you would just read straight through this book once and put it down, I would agree, $14 is awfully steep, but that isn't the kind of book this is.
This is a book you will pick up time and time again.
Whether it is his list of movies in the AFI top 100 that didn't belong there, or his list of actress who went nude with no business doing it, it is great to hear someone with something of an authority on what is good in the movie world kicking overrated bunk off of its high pedestal and putting it in its proper place.
Who else is going to dog on Jimmy Stewart's character in It's a Wonderful Life or say Helen Mirren really needs to learn to keep her clothes on on camera (she doesn't have the body she used to)?
There is some great moments of humor, such as "7 Movies In Which Ben Affleck Cries Like a Big Fat Baby" and also some pleasant surprises, such as naming Life of Brian third best Easter movie ever. It also has the one thing every American wants to read, something that makes them feel like in some way they are better than the celebrities they seen on the big screen, which is provided to us through lists such as "Worst Oscar Acceptance Speeches."
This is a great book to pull out and read from time to time. It will always bring a smile to your face.
Really not worth $14.......2006-08-07
This is a fun book. He has plenty of lists that are oft times humorous but sometimes rather banal. The "sure sign that you're doomed" list has been gone over so many times that we all know the jokes about characters that go down the steps to investigate the noise or who have important information to tell the protagonist. None of the lists are particularly illuminating, but many are funny and that's really all this book is aiming for. Unfortunately, this book is also so thin that it takes less than an hour to read. While that's great for a gift book or a book that you find in the dollar bin, paying full price seems ridiculous.
Fun stuff for film fanatics.......2006-03-07
Know any film buffs? Chances are you do. It seems like they like to see movies just because they are movies. They are apt to be reminded of this scene or that line from some film most folks remember vaguely. They like to draw connections between seemingly unrelated movies, and they have a strong sense of the "man behind the curtain" of moviedom: the clichés, the stolen plotlines, the mistakes, and so on.
Richard Roeper knows this audience well. 10 Sure Signs is a quite unique film buff's document. It manages to be a both a book that will please film nerds, but also one that will not alienate less devoted movie fans. This is no dry tome filled with pages of figures, dates, and unadorned quotes. It is as much a book of humor as a study of film.
However, one should note that, since it is a book of lists, the readability is a little low. It is the sort of book that works well in small doses-great dipping into periodically, but not for that long evening at home. It may also become dated fairly quickly, as new films arise that belong on the list-but part of the reader's fun may be in thinking of those new films.
The man knows movies........2005-07-16
Mr. Roeper did a good job with this book. It was truly humorous and enjoyable. I also learned about what good movies have been made over the years, and also ones to avoid. Sometimes I didn't agree but I feel better equipped to go to the video rental store.

Chess 2.......2006-11-10
This is a very good book on chess that goes beyond the basics of the game. It is a "must read" for chess enthusiasts.
Vol 1 and 2 -Both Excellent.......2005-07-28
I really like the way Lev Alburt and Larry Parr have written these Volumes of the " Secrets of the Russian Chess Masters". I think reading Volume 1 is a must for beginners if you want to get the most out of Volume 2. I had no problem going from Volume 1 to Volume 2. Volume 2 (about the first 100 pages) starts mainly with more detailed Tactics and many helpful Diagrams. There are up to 3 diagrams on one page with the answers & explanations on the opposite page or just below the diagrams, no searching for answers. The last half of the book is mainly about Openings. There about 20 openings he explains and many have an accompanying Master Games ( Reti, Fischer, Tal ) which are easy to follow. I also like that he gives some specific Opening recommendations. Thus, this book explains Advanced Tactics and will prepare you for a more advanced Opening Book. Lev also gives a list of all the Chess Champions starting 1745(A.Philidor) to 1997(G.Kasparov). The book is 231 pages including a nice Index.
One of Alburt's best ........2005-05-19
This book teaches you elements of tactics. There are a lot of puzzles to solve and they are quiet challenging. The book is not for beginners, so take a note of that. Seems that most of the examples in this book were used to create Alburt's "300 most important positions" published later.
Fantastic book. Teaches chess the right way........1999-09-23
It's probably the quickest way to learn chess, and the right way to do it. Very pleasing to read and full of "Chessercizes" that help you test your understanding of the presented material. This volume enhances your knowledge of the game not through boring opening memorization but through tactics and tactical devices that can be applied to any game at anytime. won't believe how it will improve your game and playing style as well as your appreciation for the fine art of chess.

No successor/no success.......2007-05-09
I like the premise of this book: take care of your network and they will return the favor.
"The determination of a positive or negative outcome in my leadership depends upon my ability as a leader to develop those closest to me. It also depends upon my ability to recognize the value that others can give my organization and me. My goal is not to draw a following that results in a crowd. My goal is to develop leaders who become a movement....Leaders create and inspire new leaders."
He even quotes Druker--"There is no success without a successor" -- Peter Drucker
Good but not Great.......2007-04-10
I have to admit that I didn't care for this as much as most of John Maxwell's other books. The information is great and there are a lot of points that can be pulled from this, but it just felt like the book was a bunch of lists within lists. It was actually difficult to digest.
This is one of those books that you can really only read a few pages at a time instead of trying to take in a bunch in one sitting. But even doing this, you'll find that each list is often accompanied by sub-lists and even sub-lists of sub-lists. Again, all the information is great, but you get lost a bit on what list you're reading.
With that said, Developing is still a must-read for any business leader, manager or supervisor. Maxwell provides the framework for not only finding but creating great leaders within your organization. He takes you through the process step by step (and step within step) of why and how to turn your employees into a strong leadership team.
good book.......2007-02-10
This book is a great book with tons of information and set out with a great spiritual strength. Reading level is medium difficulty but worth the personal stretch.
Excellent!!.......2006-03-11
I am addicted to John Maxwell's books on leadership! This one is excellent! It challenges you to become a strong leader in order to develop leaders. Maxwell always presents information in a way that is challenging and he gives practical ways to put new skills into action. If you are leading a corporation or a small group I think you would benefit from this book.
Teacher & Engineer.......2005-02-10
This is one of the best books I have ever read in term of the leadership development.
