Book Description
Ten years after completing his work The Last Communion of Saint Jerome, Bolognese painter Domenichino was accused by his rival Giovanni Lanfranco of stealing the idea for the painting from an altarpiece crafted by Lanfranco’s teacher, Agostino Carracci. The resulting scandal reverberated through the centuries, drawing responses by artists and critics from Poussin and Malvasia to Fuseli and Delacroix.
Why was Domenichino attacked in this way when other related paintings—including Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin and Perugino’s painting of the same subject—aroused no such negative response? In this fast-paced book, Elizabeth Cropper investigates the Domenichino affair and addresses the perennial debate regarding the precise nature of originality and of imitation. She offers close readings of the paintings involved in the story, detailed analysis of attitudes toward imitation, emulation, and plagiarism, and a fascinating discussion of what Domenichino’s plight signifies in art history.

Customer Reviews:
great book, not helpful for the shoe shopper.......2007-03-30
I think this is the only book of its kind, or at least the only one in print. The photographs are great, as is the content.
The only disappointment I had was that I had purchased the book in part to try to understand better my own shoes. However, after reading this book, I doubt very much that the various shoes I've owned are constructed in the same manner, so I haven't gained any useful insights. I'm still stuck with price-tag as a mediator of quality, which I hate.
Great book!.......2007-01-12
I want to make my own shoes, and this book explains a LOT of terms that I couldnt find definitions for. VERY detailed, with a lot of interesting history related to shoes. Nice hardcover, with color glossy paper.
Great information clearly illustrated........2006-08-16
The book is basically one-of-a-kind and that alone should give it some due respect. You will come away knowing more about shoes and their manufacture than you ever thought possible. However, if you ever visit Vass in Budapest for a fitting, don't expect them to follow the lengthy steps outlined in the book for having custom shoes made. They won't. How quickly (and simply) you are measured will come as a great surprise. That said, you will still be stunned at the beautiful (and perfect fitting) shoes that you will receive. And through the book you'll be clear on how they came about.
HIghly recommended for the clothes horse.
Fantastic Book !.......2002-09-10
If you want to know how to make shoes or just want to know how shoes are made this is the best book that you can buy. Every page has beautiful closeup color photographs. Just by looking at the photographs alone shows you how it is done and there are many, many, photographs showing you every stage in the process of hand making a pair of men's shoes.
Finally, a decent book on shoemaking.......2002-08-14
Information on shoemaking is getting difficult to find. I bought this book hoping I could learn how nice shoes are made. I was very pleased with what I learned from this book. One step further into the details, however, would have made this book the last word on the subject.
If you have a little imagination, however, it is not too hard to fill in the details. Actually, since the author is a very respected Hungarian shoemaker, I can imagine it being a difficult decision on where to draw the line between "details" and "wordiness." Do you have to talk about glue viscosity (he does) or glue recipes (he doesn't, "shop secrets"). Plenty of information is included and hundreds of excellent photos make it easy to imagine yourself right alongside a master craftsman.
Topics include:
* taking measurements
* anatomy
* shoe sizes
* history and making of lasts
* characteristics of different styles of men's dress shoes
* design of the pattern (the gist of it, anyway)
* leather tanning processes
* characteristics of different leathers
* clicking, brogueing, stitching and reinforcing of uppers
* lasting the shoe (stretching the upper around the last)
* lots of detail on tacking and stitching during the lasting process
* welting
* soling (including the shank and cork filler)
* building the heel
* ornamentation and finishing
* proper shoe care
* short bios on the greatest workshops in Europe and America
Needless to say, I learned alot. I had no idea top-end shoes use wooden pegs to hold the heels on or that broken glass and bones are common tools in the trade. This is a very nice addition to my library.

'Dilbert' is the most quoted, photocopied, and faxed comic strip of the nineties, with more than 30 million readers in nine countries and many more throughout cyberspace. But in case you've been living in a mayonnaise container for the past five years, Dilbert is a luckless, cubicle-dwelling engineer. His canine companion, Dogbert, plans to conquer the planet and make all the people his slaves. Together, they navigate a world filled with clueless and annoying people. 'Dilbert' is the comic for anyone who thinks they're surrounded by idiots.
Customer Reviews:
A great Dilbert book.......2004-05-28
One of the main reasons I like this book so much is that it focuses mainly on Dilbert and Dogbert. I have two Dilbert books with just them in it and 9 ones with Dilbert at the office and this one gives a nice change to the whole office aspect. Bob the dinosaur's son Rex is born is this book which is great because in one of my other books they introduce him. Dilbert and Dogbert have a great time together and Dilbert is great and this book is no exception.
Dilbert DIES!.......2002-08-19
Yes, in this book, the character of Dilbert dies. But never fear, he is cloned back to life from his garbage! This book covers strips from mid-1990 to May 1991. The dinosaurs Bob and Dawn have an egg which hatches into the short-lived character of Rex. Also returning for a series is Dilber't Ego. Scott Adams continues to improve his trade in this book. Great for when you need some laughs or light reading.
5 Stars All the Way.......2002-06-16
Bring me the Head of Willy the Mailboy! is just as funny as all the other Dilbert books. This one like all of them is a must read for any Dilbert Fan. Look at the average rating for it, A perfect five stars so you know it must be great
Magnificent Book!.......2001-12-26
Bring Me the Head of Willy the Mailboy is a very wonderful Dilbert book. It exposes the many insane issues of life. It has not fully developed into a workplace comic strip yet, but it is evolving into a semi-workplace comic strip. It is a wonderful book with some darker sides also-like Dilbert dying (But coming back, of course).
Worth a couple read-throughs.......1999-07-26
A fairly witty book, but you lose something when you re-read it a couple of times. Fairly funny book.

Smart, droll, delightful........2004-10-22
This is a smart, delightful book, a gentle send-up (and celebration of) cats, cat owners and gay culture. For those who have ever sat miserable at their office desks wondering what Fluffy was getting up to at home, IS YOUR CAT GAY? furnishes some very amusing scenarios. The text is witty and the drawings are droll, perfect little gems. Read it to your cat.

Multiculturalism, Postcoloniality and Transnational Media (Rutgers Depth of Field Series)
ASIN: 0822320487 |
Book Description
Tropical Multiculturalism provides a major study of race in Brazilian culture through the most complete critical analysis of Brazilian cinema in any language. Focusing on representations of multicultural themes involving Euro- and Afro-Brazilians, other immigrants, and indigenous peoples in the rich tradition of Brazilian fictional feature film, Robert Stam puts Brazilian culture at the center of a wide-ranging analysis of race, representation, history, and film. Drawing parallels between the histories of colonialism, slavery, and immigration in Brazil and the United States, he also contends that questions of ethnic and racial representations are best viewed within the larger context of a comparative analysis of racially plural societies.
Stam examines the broad historical and cultural links that connect Brazil and the United States before considering multicultural imagery in Brazilian film as it has changed from the silent era to the present. His analysis moves through the comic chanchadas of the 1930s and 1940s, to the Hollywood-style films from Sao Paulo in the 1950s, and the diverse phases of Cinema Novo beginning in the 1960s. He explores a wealth of subjects, including the submerged "blackness" of Carmen Miranda, the anti-racist agenda of Orson Welles’s never-released Brazilian film It’s All True, the international background behind Black Orpheus, the career of Grande Otelo (Brazil’s greatest black film star), the allegorical "cannibalistic" films like How Tasty Was My Frenchman, and "indigenous media"âthe attempt by Brazilian "indians" to use camcorders and VCRs for their own cultural and political purposes. Tropical Multiculturalism is simultaneously a history of Brazilian cinema from the standpoint of race, a history of Brazil itself through its cinematic representations, a comparative study of racial formations in Brazil and the United States, and a theorized analysis of racialized representations.

A Fine Study of Brazilian Cinema.......2000-03-25
Johnson and Stam have compiled what is perhaps the definitive commentary on Brazilian cinema, offering thorough explications of the most important films from several different periods and styles. The book also discusses in detail tropicalism, anthropophagy, and other background elements that are integral to achieve an understanding of Brazilian cinema. Though some of the concepts may seem daunting, they are explained clearly and in a historical context, making it an excellent reference for students (either of Brazil or film in general). While some of the same articles appear in Cinema Novo X 5, Brazilian Cinema covers a wider range of subjects. If you are interested in Brazilian films, it is a must-read.

Book Description
"Gender is an absolute ground zero for most human societies," writes David William Foster, "an absolute horizon of social subjectivity." In this book, he examines gender issues in thirteen Brazilian films made (with one exception) after the 1985 return to constitutional democracy and elimination of censorship to show how these issues arise from and comment on the sociohistorical reality of contemporary Brazilian society. Foster organizes his study around three broad themes: construction of masculinity, constructions of feminine and feminist identities, and same-sex positionings and social power. Within his discussions of individual films ranging from Jorge um brasileiro to A hora da estrela to Beijo no asfalto, he offers new ways of understanding national ideals and stereotypes, sexual dissidence (homoeroticism and transgenderism), heroic models, U.S./Brazilian relations, revolutionary struggle, and human rights violations. As the first study of Brazilian cinematic representations of gender ideology in English or Portuguese, this book will be important reading in film and cultural studies.

Book Description
Brazilian cinema is one of the most influential national cinemas in Latin America and this wide-ranging study traces the evolution of Brazilian film from the silent era to the present day, including detailed studies of more recent international box-office hits, such as
Central Station (1998) and
City of God (2002).
Brazilian National Cinema gives due importance to traditionally overlooked aspects of Brazilian cinema, such as popular genres, ranging from musical comedies (the
chanchada) to soft-core porn films (the
pornochanchada) and horror films, and also provides a fresh approach to the internationally acclaimed avant-garde
Cinema Novo of the 1960s.
Lisa Shaw and Stephanie Dennison apply recent theories on stardom, particularly relating to issues of ethnicity, race and gender, to both well-known Brazilian performers, such as Carmen Miranda and Sonia Braga, and lesser known domestic icons, such as the Afro-Brazilian comic actor, Grande Otelo (Big Othello), and the uberblonde children's TV and film star, and media mogul, Xuxa.
This timely addition to the
National Cinemas series provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Brazilian cinema and issues of national and cultural identity.

Book Description
Luacute;cia Nagib here presents the first comprehensive critical survey of Brazilian film production since the mid-1990s, which has become known as the "Renaissance of Brazilian cinema". Besides reflecting on the conditions that made possible this recent boom, this book elaborates on the new aesthetic tendencies of recent productions, as well as their relationships to earlier traditions of Brazilian cinema. Internationally acclaimed films, such as Central Station, Seven Days in September and Orpheus, are analyzed alongside daringly experimental works, such as Chronically Unfeasible, Starry Sky and Perfumed Ball.
Customer Reviews:
Well done summary of Brazilian Cinema.......2004-11-22
As explained in the Introduction, Brazil has had a rocky time for the last twenty to thirty years. After almost being totally destroyed during the early 1990's, Brazilian cinema has experienced a great renaissance. This book covers the full range of this renaissance, with various essays touching on the artistic, political, religious, and socio-economic realities that characterize this movement. Gracing the cover is a still from perhaps the best-known (and best-loved) film of the era, "Central Station" (1998), a movie that is mentioned and discussed frequently in the text. For those interested in expanding their horizons, especially in terms of cinema, this book is an engaging read.

STOP DO NOT BUY.......2006-05-03
When i bought this book I was hoping for guidence not a list of items to put in a basket! That's called brainstorming and it's free. I highly suggest anyone who is thinking about buying this book to find something else or just come up with your own ideas for free. This book isnt worth your time or money.

Book Description
As companies shift from hierarchical management into teamwork, managing is not nearly as important as coaching. Here is the first book on the coaching process written exclusively for sales managers--a brief, easy-to-digest primer on making the transition from a traditional boss to a sales coach. Created by an author/instructor who teaches sales management as the prestigious Wharton Executive Development Center, this guide shows sales managers how to: understand the nuances and payoffs of coaching: conduct coaching sessions and improve key skills such as listening and giving feedback; deal with problems such as discipline and reluctant behavior within the sales team; and coach and peers on oneself.

Extremely practical, extremely relevant, very easy to read........2007-03-16
This book is a real treasure. I would have been successful by 1000% if I had read this book earlier. The price of this book is such a small investment in comparison what you get from this book. I recommend it a thousand of times!
I recommend it for all the leaders no matter if you coach sales teams or teams of other profiles.
Thanks the author for such an extreemely useful and practical book.
Coaching at it's finest .......2007-01-04
Very practical and helpful for anyone who want to be effective coaches. Ms. Richardson really understands what most managers and sales persons tend to do in a coaching situation and was able to 'coach' readers in how to avoid common pitfalls.
Excellent choice for learning to coach a team!.......2005-09-09
This was an excellent book. The topics included were very applicable to creating a coaching culture. It is very straight forward and easy to read and comprehend! This book will be extremely helpful in creating a coaching culture in a sales call center environment.
Sales Coaching is practical, applicable, and long overdue........1999-09-23
I often say to Sales Managers, "Show me a great Sales Manager with lousy salespeople and I will show you a lousy Sales Manager." Then I tell them to read 'Sales Coaching.'
Linda Richardson has constructed the ultimate step-by-step guide in getting managers to reevaluate their priorities and focus their attention on improving the sales staff through effective developmental coaching. The book is easy to read and full of practical tips and coaching models that will make any sales team more productive.
Most importantly, unlike many sales management books, this work translates into practical application without the brain damage. Sales Managers should be able to apply these principles immediately. Read this with a highlighter in your hand - and be prepared to transform your sales management approach.
