Book Description
What happens when a body is presented as a stage, and dramas unfold across it--is it Performance Art or pornography?
The Explicit Body examines the controversial and often shocking issues which surround the use of the female body in performance art.
Since the early 1960s, women in performance art have worked to "liberate" the female body from the confines of patriarchal delimitation. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the clash of the rubrics "porn" and "art"' manipulated by female artists worked to complicate the already embattled debates about the terms of that liberation. Schneider tackles topics which include the "post-porn modernist movement", censorship by the New Right, primitivism, commodity fetishism, and the link between the modern prostitute and the postmodern performance artist. Among the many artists discussed are Karen Finley, Spiderwoman Theatre, Carolee Scheemann, and Annie Sprinkle. Theoretically sophisticated, trenchantly argued and elegantly written,
The Explicit Body will be illuminating reading for students and teachers of performance studies, women's studies and cultural studies as well as practitioners of performance art.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant combo of theory and practice.......2001-02-04
What I love most about this brilliant, original work is the way Schneider manages to think beyond the usual programmatic feminist notions that have become so dated, even reactionary, and yet do so without sacrificing her passionately held feminist politiccs. It really is a tour de force, and will interst anyone intersted in the representation of the female nude in art, pornography, and in theatrical performance.
An Exquisite Performance.......2000-12-16
A great survey of the 1980s performance art scene, the era of Annie Sprinkle, Karen Finley, Carolee Schneeman, even Sandra Bernhard and RuPaul. Scheider's book is both personally compelling and theoretically rich. She was obviously in New York City for the 80s, catching the downtown performances that launched a thousand Jesse Helms speeches. Wonderful observations from the front line and the front row, a perspective too often missing from academic works about performance. Schneider is also an expert guide through the theoretical precedents for the body as stage; the book offers original and relevant readings of Walter Benjamin, Judith Butler, and Jaques Lacan. Explicit Body is illustrated with a terrific photographs, invaluable documentation of a vital and dynamic period. (The juxtaposition of Cindy Sherman's gross-out work with a Gianfranco Ferre advertisement had me laughing out loud.) Highly recommended for anyone interested in the performative side of gender studies, commodity fetishism, and queer theory.
Explicitly Misleading?.......2000-12-11
Schneider's topic is both controversial and compelling, and for that I applaud her efforts. Her strongest areas of analysis and discussion in "The Explicit Body in Performance" include performance vs. pornography and the artists Carolee Schneeman and Annie Sprinkle. Schneider is far less effective in examining the tenuous topic of race and the explicit body in performance--and perhaps understandably so. Race is a difficult area to tackle on its own, and much moreso when it is paired with the notion of the explicit, racially-marked body in performance. Much stronger analyses of this nature do exist--coming from such performance theorists and cultural critics as Coco Fusco and bell hooks. Still, "The Explicit Body in Performance" is a book worth reading, particularly for avid fans, students, and scholars of women's performance art.
Book Description
Harnessing the romance of the world of fashion and high art, this fascinating story of a collection of miniature mannequins describes the birth of Théâtre de la Mode, the Theater of Fashion. Full of stars such as Robert Ricci (Nina Ricci's son), filmmaker Jean Cocteau, and other members of the 1944 haute couture industry, the story follows 237 miniature fashion dolls through their epic tour of Europe and North America, bringing fashion, elegance, and beauty into a war-torn world. Also included are new color photographs of the mannequins, the reconstructed sets, and close-up details of clothing so sewers, designers, and fashion mavens can appreciate the creativity of Paris designers at the end of World War II.

Saw them in person...........2007-04-16
I went to the museum that owns this collection... the Maryhill Museum of Art in Washington State (About 2 hours outside Portland, OR). The photos don't do these creations justice I must say. The details on such a tiny scale are truely amazing! I've been meaning to get this book, its been on my wish list forever. I ended up getting it at the museum for full price, but it was worth it!
Exquisite reproduction of 1940's fashions.......2007-04-12
I saw an article about these dolls, that had a few tantalizing photos. I am so glad I found this catalog of the show. The fashions are presented on 29" dolls, in a theater setting, and there are so many of them, I have to keep going back to look again. The story behind their creation is equally interesting.
Great book, but the pictures aren't so hot..........2004-05-18
The color and lighting in most of the photographs is poor...I understand this is an 'art' book, but when I am looking for a specific design, if the picture is going to be no bigger than a business card, I would hope it would at least be a straight on shot done in good lighting. If you want that, this is NOT the book for you...check it out from the library, at least then your disappointment won't cost you 20 bucks.
An Absolute Must-Own.......2004-01-06
Whatever your interest that led you to this book, you must purchase it. You'll find yourself studying this book from cover to cover, over and over. The little dolls and their story are mesmerizing.
from a British vintage fashion lover.......2002-11-26
I,m absolutely delighted to see this book back in print as I ,ve been searching for itf for years. The enlarged photos give an even better view of the detail and workmanship in these tiny garments. IIt,s a lovely symbol of postwar renewal and optimism to be treasured always.

Book Description
Why are Americans so disinterested in politics? Because we can be. Democracy is voluntary. And our lack of interest hasn't happened overnight. It can be traced directly back to our ever-decreasing attention spans. We need anything politically important rationed out like Pez-small, sweet, and coming out of a funny plastic head.
Why has flying in this country, especially boarding the plane, turned into this tedious Bataan death march with American Tourister overnight bags? And when did flight attendants get so cranky?
Who do we find ourselves locked in this pointless pas de doo-doo over something called "arts funding?" The federal tab involved here is a lousy 500 million dollars. One-fifth the national budget! Less than the money spent on 1-900 calls from Air Force One.
Mothers, immigration, marriage, parenthood, sports, political correctness, and our general attitudes toward each other-all are equally worthy of Dennis Miller's close inspection and ridicule. What's really going on in this country? Ask Dennis Miller. Or don't ask. He'll tell you anyway. Not that he really wants to go off on another rant. Remember, it's only his opinion, he could be wrong.

A look back at Our Dennis, pre-9/11 and 2002.......2003-08-31
If you're anywhere left of center, or even a moderate, or maybe even just right of center, this audio CD contains gems--readings of selections of Dennis Miller's rants from the past few years. This, of course, was before 9/11, and before the year 2002 when Dennis' supports (Monday Night Football on ABC and Dennis Miller Live on HBO) were yanked out from under him. This CD is a reminder of the precious commodity we lost when, out of fear or expediency or I-don't-know-why, Dennis decided that the right could do no wrong, and verbally threw the lefties out to the wolves.
I just got this CD yesterday, and I relished replaying some of his rants at least twice. In the first rant, Dennis reminds us that "Arts Funding" is far less than 1% of the federal budget, and though art can't build houses, it does educate, beautify, and display human potential. "90% of arts is s***, 4 out of the remaining 5% is s*** with an asterisk, but oh, that 1%!" He muses on the morality of abortion (taking a middling position), the brass tacks of feminism, and the joys of marriage and parenting.
Of course, this CD is laced with the F word and other choice verbiage. Although I'd always admired Miller, the crude language pushed me away. But I'm thinking now it's better to have (occasional) R-rated language with something wise, compassionate, and pointed to say, than PG-language where you've sold out to the rich and powerful.
Of course that's just my opinion, but I think I'm right.

Lost in Delivery.......2001-06-24
Dennis is one of my favorite comedians, which is why I rated this work so highly. The cover says "Read by the Author" and that's what he does, he reads. Not in the fiery tongue of his TV monologues but like he was reading a bedtime story on a night when he felt under the weather. And some of the material was previously released. At least 3 of the bits are in "Rants". And the jazzy musical interludes between bits is not preferable to dead silence. But he makes you think, and sometimes go look up stuff, which is why I like him.
Best Yet!.......2000-04-07
I don't understand why Dennis Miller only released this on audio, if he put it in print, he would probably make the bestseller list again, maybe it was because he didn't want it to lose anything, all in all, a very good book, my favorite rant was the one on immigration, although on a couple of them, he seemed to be repeating himself, i still think it is a very satisfying buy.
The Best Ranting CD Yet!.......2000-03-30
Dennis Miller is back on audio CD with new material, witty commentary, and those cretive analogies. In this hour long CD, Dennis gives his views about Mothers, Bill Clinton's second term, air travel, parenthood, spouses, child rearing, and the mother of all arguements - abortion where he remains to still have a very humorous approach to just like towards everything else. Dennis Miller is a man who is very familiar with each subject matter he decides to take on, and many of these rants will become fan favorites for years to come. Clearly this is Miller's best audio book, containing some of his best material yet. I highly reccommend to all Dennis Miller fans out there this is worth spending your hard earned money over!

Another solid film book by Bernard F. Dick.......2000-09-20
Although not as detailed or as well-written as it could be, this is a sold book focusing on one of the most talented (as well as one of the toughest) studio presidents ever. Vulgar, often hated, Cohn is still a fascinating figure in Hollywood history. Highlights of this book include Clifford Odets actual Eulogy for Cohn and information about the relationship between Frank Capra and Cohn.

The book is presented from their fans' perspective and features hundreds of never-before-published photos of the Greatest Rock `n' Roll Band in the World.
"Love You Live, Rolling Stones: Fanfare From the Common Fan" contains stories from fans around the world who wrote about Rolling Stones memories at some of the most important events in the history of Rock `n Roll, including: the crowd record-breaking concert in Hyde Park, the infamous Altamont Concert; the BBC special "Rock `n' Roll Circus"; and the precedent-setting club concert, El Mocambo.
"Love You Live, Rolling Stones: Fanfare from the Common Fan" takes it's name from a popular live Rolling Stones double album released in 1977 and was mostly recorded during their Tour of the Americas in 1975. At the beginning of each concert on this tour an excerpt from Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" was played as an overture.
Editor Marilou Regan and Hans Oosterbaan have been collecting photos and stories for the book for nearly three years. There are over 600 photos in the book.
Most of the photos in "Love You Live, Rolling Stones; Fanfare from the Common Fan" have never before been published. Fans have shared their personal photo collections for the book. Some well-known professional Stones photographers, including Kevin Mazur, Dave Hogan, Bob Gruen, Phyllis Lattner, Bob Mussell, Fernando Aceves, and Thom Hoffman, have also contributed never-before-published photos to "Love You Live". And Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood has contributed a collectible artwork.
There are approximately 80 stories in "Love You Live" submitted by fans from 20 different countries. Each story contains a historic perspective of the era and the mood of the country it represents. The stories are anecdotal and personal and filled with adventures from the 40 years the Rolling Stones have been touring.

One Word..... TOTALLY AWESOME.......2004-03-13
I love the Stones. They are, to me and you, as the comon man would like to say. Me and my lady freind, who like the stone as well, though that my good friend, Mary Lou Regan, who I know was inspried by page number 420 to 422 was a great story. Reading it back to myself brought a tear to eye and will never forget and also not even once would you know that the stories are true. Rock hard and Live Long Stones!!!!
whosdoinwhat.......2003-02-11
.....the graphics, pictorials, and mirage of color blend into one great reading experience. A standing ovation to the Editor, Designer, and all the fans who contributed their experience in words. "caution....do not attempt to read this book without listening to the stones"
BY THE FANS, FOR THE FANS.......2003-02-10
Marilou worked on this book for several years, and I think her patience, time, and Tender Loving Care shows in this wonderful piece of work. The book contains stories about the Rolling Stones written by fans from all over the world. To go with these interesting stories are photographs that have never published before, and pictures of memorabilia from some of the biggest Stones collectors in the world. From the Sixties to the present, this book is for every die-hard fan of the Rolling Stones. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked at this book. From what I was told, even the Rolling Stones themselves were impressed with this one. It's a must.
Out of the Shadows.......2002-12-10
This is just a wonderful book. One that is unique in that it is written by the hard core fans of the Rolling Stones and not by some hired gun writing for the Rock Star of the year.
Have you ever sat around with a bunch of old friends reminiscing about the good ole days? Sure you have! This book is not unlike that. It's packed with one great story after another. Not to mention some killer pictures. If your a Stones Fan, or even just a fan of Rock n Roll you must have this book!
beautiful.......2002-12-02
Wonderful! Mrs. Regan captures the essence of The Rolling Stones in her book. Magical!

What a deal!.......2000-10-24
I had contacted a stencil store to find fairy stencils for me. They were very expensive and so I ordered this without knowing exactly what to expect. They are just joyously perfect! I have used them to stencil the top of a picnic basket, for cards, wrapping paper and plan to use them in my whimsical bathroom. And they aren't just for kids, just for the kid in us... I am 52 years old and they still kindle magic for me!
Nice designs.......1999-11-11
There are three sheets of heavy white plastic with about 9 different stencil designs. I say "about" because in some cases the designs can be combined or split up as you wish, especially on one of the sheets. One sheet contains only two large fairies. Another contains the three that could be combined or split up. The last contains four more smaller fairies. Many of the fairies are interacting with other items that could be used separately; like hearts, flowers, leaves and branches, and a butterfly.
All designs are fairly open and would therefore be easy for kids to use with success.

Great Book.......2007-09-17
Fantastic information. Everything you need to know presented in a well thought out format.
A Good and Practical Book.......2007-05-19
Hi, I am a Korean who would like to run my own coffee bar in Korea soon. It was very difficult to find really good guide books here in Korea, I mean ,written in Korean. Hoping to find one, I visited this Amazon and to my happiness I fianlly could find it, this book 'Start and Run a Coffee Bar'. This book is so practical and helpful to me. I appreciate that two writers would share their experience and knowledge with us.
Really Useful.......2007-03-15
I usually dont write these sorts of reviews but this was just exactly what i was looking for. A great primer on things you need to know and do to open a coffee shop including checklists. I would recommend it to newcommers to the business.
Applys to other retail businesses.......2006-12-31
I bought this book several years ago before I knew what type of business I was going to be in. I've now owned a retail store (paint your own pottery) for more than 4 years and looking at this book now, it does have a lot of good information for anyone looking to start and run a retail business with a service aspect. The chapters on business planning, setting up your business, insurance, securing a site, getting to opening, staffing and the last 4-5 chapters on operations all are well-written and applicable to many forms of retail.
Good information--not as complete as I would like.......2005-09-09
As a designer, I was looking more for input on equipment layout and functionality. This book gave me a good equipment list to discuss and layout with the client. The local building department loved our plans! The one area where the book falls short is helping to illustrate some good layouts.
