Book Description
Few books of costume design are more useful than this volume. Detailed drawings in a continuous chronological format provide a history of costume design from the first century AD to 1930. More than 1,400 illustrations chronicle the full sweep of two millennia of Western garb, from Roman noble to Victorian dandy, from Elizabethan lady to Jazz Age schoolboy.

a gift well received.......2007-01-10
This was purchased as a gift for my 11-year-old granddaughter who is very interested in historic costumes. She immediately, on Christmas day, sharpened the special hard-lead colored pencils I bought to go with it and proceeded to submerge herself in the detailed illustrations. Seemed like a successful gift to me.
Good for quick visual reference!.......2006-07-04
I love to use this book as a quick visual reference while working on shows. When helping a customer, or explaining something to an assistant at our shop, this book is the easiest way to do so. It is so great to have a book where I can flip to a certain date, and have pages full of pictures grouped together to show someone what exactly I am thinking of. We have to work at a fast pace, and this book saves me lots of valuable time.
Lovely pics, no writing.......2005-08-29
They say up front that they (the authors) purposely did not put in any writing to as not to sway our view of the clothing. Alas, that means if one does not know period clothing from LOTS of different periods, one will not be able to identify items. Still, lovely drawings. It will make a fine adult coloring book! (Yes, I'm serious) :-)
Don't waste your money.......2005-08-27
This book consisted of black and white 2D scetches that lacked any real depth or detail. They are basic and generalised in presenting each period and contain nothing new that you would not have already seen or known about that decade.
I do not recommend it to anyone who has a intrest in costume or design, but think it would be better suited as a childrens colouring in book.
Don't waste your money.
A wonderful reference book that I couldn't live without.......2005-03-25
This is quite simply a fabulous book, and a very useful one too! I am an author who writes historical novels, and when I need to know what the characters I'm writing about would have been wearing in any given year from antiquity through to modern times (1930s), I turn to this book. Fortunately, it's not cluttered with text, but merely contains drawings, pure and simple and straighforward. It's the quickest, most accurate reference book I own, aside from my dictionary, of course.
My only qualm is that it doesn't contain anything about undergarments, such as bustles, knickers, petticoats, crinolines or girdles. But then, the pictures in this book are sourced from historical paintings, sculptures, mosaics, illuminated manuscripts and so forth, which probably never showed such things, as they might have been considered indecent or irrelevant. (I suppose not too many people throughout history wanted to be painted in their underwear!)
If you're a writer, an arts student, a costume designer or just someone who has an interest in the history of fashion, I would highly recommend this book to you.
Book Description
Maxine is a bona fide phenomenon. Her likeness graces mugs, calendars, T-shirts, collectibles, and even a 2.5-foot doll. She's been hailed by the press as the "Mother Lode of laughs" (- People magazine) and "The queen of outrageous" (- McCall's). Maxine is fresh, funny, odd, and ever-so-deliciously twisted. Maxine's creator, artist John Wagner, based part of his character's tell-it-like-it-is persona on his grandmother, mother, and maiden aunts. "She's been a voice for a silent group of women that are glad that this cranky old woman is finally saying what she wants."
The voice of Maxine comes out as: "My soul's had enough chicken soup. It wants some chocolate." "My idea of feng shui is to have them arrange the pepperoni in a circle on my pizza." "I may be old, but people who look like me always win the lottery." MAXINE: YELLING IT LIKE IT IS includes all-new, never-before-published material, all in full-color.

Maxine Yelling It Like It Is.......2004-07-02
I picked this book up off of the grocery store shelf and started reading it. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. I looked up to see I was entertaining other shoppers. I am buying this book for my cousin who has just started chemo therapy. I believe laughter is the Best Medicine and Maxine sure Yells out the laughs.
Maxine has the right answers.......2001-07-22
My review is that this book is funny and so truthful you laugh your socks off when reading it. This is one book that can instantly get you from a down mood to one happy person. The pictures in the book add just the right touch to the wording stated. A must book for someone with a great sense of humor.

Complete with over-the-top one-liners and classic Maxine rants, this hilarious humor collection offers something for every closet curmudgeon.

Book Description
Stories-surprising, fascinating, illuminating, titillating-from the feisty pages of Japan's weekly magazines Each week, the authors of this book comb the varied weeklies that cascade from Japan's printing presses, pages brimming with blaring headlines and alluring stories. Their translations and interpretations of many of these tales-lurid, quirky and irreverent-have long been a staple on the pages of the country's English-language newspapers, and a big favorite of captivated readers. TABLOID TOKYO is a selection of their best columns over the past four years. Inside are stories about sex, criminal shenanigans and scandal. Families-dysfunctional and otherwise-and the economy. Pets, fashion, trends and much, much more. As a picture of contemporary Japanese society, readers will find this collection often informative, sometimes shocking . . . but always entertaining. Are the stories real? Well, Japanese readers believe so, in varying degrees. They turn to the weeklies to learn, not only the gossip and the frivolous, but also the items glossed over by the sober mainstream media. They look for kernels of truth in even the most outrageous sounding stories. They know that, after all, truth really is stranger than fiction-and often far more fun.
Customer Reviews:
The perfect toilet companion.......2006-11-12
The short anecdotes are perfect for extended visits to the crapper. Don't be like others and gobble it all up in one sitting. Get the most utility from your 10 buck book. Enjoy the ribald tales for many, many sittings. Leave the book in your toilet and you'll be aroused, disgusted and inspired.
Japan's participatory journalism.......2005-12-26
Reading "Tabloid Tokyo" is sort of a chicken-and-egg scenario - is the country as peculiar as these stories let on...or are the stories more an outgrowth of Japan's hyper-aggressive "wild weekly" reporting? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. One thing for sure: you'll be struck with the impression after breezing through this compilation that the brand of journalism practiced in this market segment is, ummm, "participatory." It is pointed out in the intro through, that "wild weekly" practices are light-years removed from the clubby, staid atmosphere of the mainstream, daily press. For someone who's been bored to tears by the Nikkei Shimbun and its brethren, this dichotomy is jarring.
Here's something to note about "Tabloid Tokyo" that made it sort of an odd read: the book's 101 two- to three-pages pieces were compiled by four Westerners with long-time roots in Japan. I had originally thought these editors simply translated the pieces. But, to the contrary: they've actually translated, summarized and interpreted them. Until you realize that, the book appears to have a rather stilted flavor, with reporters referring to their investigatory exploits in a strained third-person fashion. Once you realize instead that one of the four editors is giving you his interpretation of the original piece, things make more sense. Still, this is a technique I would have liked to have seen explained in the preface.
Panty Gazing Research Revealed!.......2005-10-06
There are two Japans, exemplified by the astir calm of the ancient temples of Nara and Kyoto, and the wild neon and easy sex of Kabukicho and Juso. Both of these worlds draw in their own particular breed of tourists and gawkers, and both are equally valuable and authentic culture. In advertising and photography however, the beautiful grace of Mt. Fuji is generally showcased over the exoticism of the Image Club, and one has too look a little harder to find the reverse side of the coin.
Japanese people too are fascinated by this seedy underbelly, as shown by "Tabloid Tokyo: 101 Tales of Sex, Crime and the Bizarre from Japan's Wild Weeklies." Actual articles collected and translated from Japanese "Weekly" magazines, these are all the torrid tales and strange encounters not usually found in guide books or culture guides. This book is a sequel to "Tokyo Confidential" by the same author.
Categorized into ten sections, the articles range from sex and prostitution, to strange fashion, the dissolution of traditional Japanese values, crime and the Yakuza and to general "Tabloid Fodder." Each of these sections is packed with short articles, usually 1 or 2 pages in length, written in a breezy style that entertains and informs.
Not all of them are pure sex related, with articles such as homeless people being evacuated to make room for a flower-viewing party, and shoddy sushi practices, but the majority are along the lines of "Men Dress in Lacy Things" about pantie/bra clad construction workers and "Costumed Lovers Seek Sex Thrills" about the Cosplay crowd.
A fun, outrageous book for those interested in Japan as well as seekers of the perverse. Japanese learners can even pick up quite a few new and interesting vocabulary additions, such as eropuri ("Erotic Photo booths") and deaikei ("Encounter Websites").
I'll Bet You Didn't Know This.......2005-09-07
Everybody knows about Japan's manufacturing prowess. But I'll bet you didn't know that prowess extends to Dutch Wives, life-sized mannequins that substitute for the real thing. And the hard working Japanese salarimen are legion. But I'll bet you didn't know that they've raised goofing off to an art. The Mark Schreiber Gang of Four bring the one-dimensional Japan we usually get in English publications to a land of,...well, real people, very much like you and me. And in their own words rewritten sideways. Will you be surprised? Yep, sometimes. Will you be titillated? Yep, sometimes. Will you be skeptical. Yep, sometimes. Will you be entertained? You bet. Everytime.
The Real Japan.......2005-09-06
Like its predecessor Tokyo Confidential, Tokyo Tabloid shows us a side of Japan that doesn't appear in the mainstream press. Japan is truly a bizarre country packed with the odd, the unbelievable and sometimes incomprehensible. Here is a group of writers who have not only translated but also interpreted these tales of obscurity into a volume that is truly a worthwhile read. Having spent time in Japan myself I can see that they really know their stuff. This is an inside job and it doesn't get better than this. These publications seem to go out of print, glad I got my Tokyo Confidential before they went up in price!
Book Description
In Tabloid Tokyo 2, the authors once again plunge into the pages of Japan's amazing weekly magazines to find more great stories that the Japanese are reading with unabashed gusto. Picking articles from the most outrageous new developments in the sex industry to the most poignant social
commentary, these media watchers, all long-term residents of the country, creatively translate and add the occasional, insightful commentary to put these "news" items into context.
Tabloid Tokyo 2, like its predecessor, offers a unique chance to see an uncensored and unexpurgated view of the quirky corners of Japan rarely covered in the mainstream media. Here are the fads, the fancies, and the foibles of life in Japan, as raw and real as life itself.
As a picture of contemporary Japanese society (or at least a large part of it), readers will once again find this a collection that is informative, sometimes shocking . . . but always entertaining.
Of the many ways to engage the Japanese, and the brilliant and peculiar society they have built, most involve reading long, long books with many, many footnotes. But the best way - the fastest, the most amusing, the most memorable - is through Tabloid Tokyo and its new sequel Tabloid Tokyo 2.
Stephen Hunter, author of The 47th Samurai, latest of the Bob Lee Swagger novels
[A] zippy collection. . . .Theres a refreshing lack of pandering, with much of the material presented in a straight-faced fashion that heightens its absurdity. PW on Tabloid Tokyo

Book Description
A revolutionary new audio program that will guide business leaders into the next century!
He gave them a vision of something larger than themselves.
The world is changing at almost breakneck speed, and the leaders who succeed will be those who can marshal their most powerful resources in the most effective ways. With principles embedded in spirituality, ethics and strength, acclaimed motivator Laurie Beth Jones brings us Jesus, CEO -- a bold yet sensitive inspirational guide for leadership success.
After years in business, Jones was struck by the notion that Jesus' leadership approach ran counter to most of today's management styles. In Jesus, CEO, she explains that by harnessing the three strengths behind Jesus' leadership techniques (the strengths of self-mastery, action, and relationships), we can become the empowered leaders that the next millenium will require.
Following the example of Jesus -- a "CEO" who took a disorganizied "staff" of twelve and built a thriving "enterprise" -- Jesus, CEO details a simple, profound, fresh, and often humor-filled approach to motivating and managing others.

After many years in business Laurie Beth Jones was struck by the notion that Jesus's leadership approach with his staff ran counter to most of the management styles and techniques employed today. Dismayed to find invaluable human energy and intelligence untapped and underutilized, Jones has made it her goal to help empower people at all levels of leadership by encouraging them to review the divine excellence in themselves and in those they serve. By harnessing the three categories of strength behind Jesus's leadership techniques (the strength of self-mastery, the strength of action, and the strength of relationships), each of us can become the empowered leaders that the next millennium will require.

director.......2007-03-19
Book was delivered a little late, but I would buy from this seller again
More recycled corporate speak .......2007-03-08
a friend at church recommended this book, said I had to read it...I thought it was pretty much garbage...lots of generic corporate babble shoehorned between a "pick and choose" approach to Jesus ministry.
Some value among the cliches.......2007-02-18
I was fairly underwhelmed by this book; it seems to use Jesus as a "unifying thematic element", but to take a fairly free hand in "massaging" the story of His life to fit the author's idea of leadership. Overall, although the book does have some value in inspiring introspection, reading The Daily Drucker (and anything else of Drucker's) in combination with the Bible will give you a much better picture of leadership and of how Jesus led, and will likely be more inspirational to effective action than will this book.
Some good Points but not much ground-breaking information.......2006-04-11
This book was fairly well written with some interesting and helpful points. The idea of using Jesus as the main subject of assessment in this book is a good choice in my view. However, I finished the book without being able to say that anything I read REALLY struck a chord or at least made me say "this is great stuff!"
The information within the book made sense but it was a bit trite in certain instances. I would recommend it to a College student but I don't think it would have much use to an experienced Business man.
Superb Devotional Booklet for Christian Leaders!.......2006-03-11
I didn't expect this title to be a devotional work. Instead, I was ready to find an instructional volume filled with leadership principles from the life of Jesus. While at first disappointed, I continued to read and to find hope and motivation as a Christian leader.
This book is much more devotional than instructional. While some of the insights have profound meaning, the focus is on application. Jones here clearly has a unique, much needed volume on Christian leadership. For its price, this book is well worth the investment.
