Designed to accompany the exhibition of the same name held at the Royal Academy in London, The Genius of Rome, 1592-1623 is a sumptuous catalog of essays that celebrates what its editor sees as "the international confluence of artistic talent in Rome around 1600 that fostered what would become known as baroque art." Between 1592 and 1623, three popes, Clement VIII, Paul V, and Gregory XV spent "spectacular sums on churches, chapels, palaces and urban renewal," deliberately re-creating Rome as a center of artistic life and commissioning the work of (amongst others) Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, Adam Elsheimer, and Peter Paul Rubens.

While The Genius of Rome amounts to much more than these four painters, they are identified with "the birth of the baroque," evolving from a mixture of Carracci's "temperate classicism," Caravaggio's "intensely naturalistic style," and the still life and landscape traditions imported from the north by Rubens and Elsheimer. The essays collected here offer a fascinating range of responses to the creation of the baroque, from the shady underworld of Caravaggio's "cardsharps, gypsies, and street vendors," via considerations of the paintings of music, classicism, still lives, and landscape, to a discussion of the radical intermingling of the sacred and the profane in the paintings and altarpieces of Caravaggio. Ultimately, Caravaggio steals the show, partly as a result of Peter Robb's controversial biography M: The Man Who Became Caravaggio, and Helen Langdon's more considered book Caravaggio: A Life, but with over 300 beautiful color plates gathered together here, there is an embarrassment of baroque artistic riches from which to choose. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

    Book Description

At the close of the 16th century, Europe's most talented painters flocked to Rome, the Eternal City, to execute commissions for popes, princes, and cardinals. Four artists—Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, Rubens, and Adam Elsheimer—played central roles in the creation of a revolutionary style of painting. The Genius of Rome 1592-1623 showcases the achievements of these masters, who gave birth to the Baroque style of painting.

The Baroque style imbued religious works with invigorating realism and breathed life into portraiture and landscape painting. This landmark volume, featuring 300 magnificent colorplates, includes essays by leading scholars that explore the movement's dominant themes. Published to accompany an important exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, The Genius of Rome 1592-1623 brings this art event to a broad audience.

              Book Description

A celebratory history of rubber—bouncy, stretchy, naughty, squeaky, biodegradable, and renewable—a book bound in a unique rubber binding.

Rubber is fun. Rubber is useful. Rubber has fetishistic appeal. It has not only been used for a multitude of everyday objects—tires, wires, handles of pliers—but has also paved the way for a multitude of advances in design, technology, and lifestyle. This complete story of rubber's origins and history shows how the power of rubber polymers—their inherent strength and capacity for recoiling to their contorted state—charges rubber with a dynamic energy source.

Filled with specially taken images by Geraldo Somozo, these pages show us rubber toys, from Wacky Wall Walkers to the collectibles of the Auburn Rubber Company; the use of this nonslip, insulating, waterproof material in every room of the house; its eerie capacity to mimic other forms and substances; how elastic fibers, comprised of rubber filaments, helped fashion designers to realize that women are not made of rigid material; how the German jeweler Bunz combined rubber with diamonds and gold; contemporary rubber in computer keyboards and cell-phone keypads; and—as climax—the steamy, salacious, seductive, (and deliciously sleazy) erotic world of rubber. Over 200 color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Rubber: More Fun Than Silly-Putty.......2006-11-07

This book just blew me away starting with the incredible binding. Made out of orange rubber with tactile surfaces and a cutout. Rare in the world of decorative bindings but very original in concept. What do you call it? Hardback(it is not hard, rather flexible) or paperback(well it can't be a paperback if it is made out of rubber!). How it will weather the ages is another matter. Best to keep the air and sun from it, as with any rubber product. The book is full of fine examples of how rubber was used in the 20th century for all manor of articles, quite a few being highly collectable these days. I enjoyed the reproductions of early posters advertising rubber and rubber products. Anyone with a collector mentality will find something inside this book to collect just for the fun of it. My favorite is the rubber lady who wiggles when you turn a small crank! This was one of those books I HAD to own once I had a copy in my hands. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew Rubber Could be So Much Fun!.......2005-03-11

If you are looking for a dry, scientific tome on the properties of rubber or a book for the kiddies, this is not your book--definitely not a book for children because of the connection between rubber and sexual activities. If, however, you want a photo-packed, fun exploration of how rubber impacts our daily lives, this is the book for you.
Personally, I prefer natural materials to synthetics but I found the scope of Ms. Bloor's collection of rubber objects and the visual variety to be truly impressive. Categories include rubber toys (showcasing my favorite of Rubber Ducky), balls, clothing, bathing caps and masks, welcome mats (including a wonderful one made of little green people), vases, water bottles, kitchen utensils, fake food, movie prosthetics (wounds, severed hands, etc.), condoms and erotica, fashion, and the recycling of tires into other useful objects. To illustrate the author's thoroughness, even the cover of this book is made of rubber.
The rubber objects, beautifully photgraphed, are the star of the book but there is enough text to give you an appreciation of this versatile substance and its history. My only quibble is that I would like to have seen more work by artists who use rubber, but maybe that will show up in a second book.

5 out of 5 stars I wish you can put a billion stars........2004-07-14

A friend gave me this book for my birthday. And I can safely say this was the best present I got out of everything. Pokemon fans and comic fans will like this. And it isn't that childish. And this Toshihiro guy can draw. I haven't read a good book like this in a long time. It ranks up there with the Harry Potter books.

              5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2004-07-02

I find the pokemon tv series childish and wasn't sure If I'd like the manga but I saw the artwork was good so I said, Why not?
It turns out this book is not really like the tv series. Ash's mom and prof. oak look totally different and ash finds pikachu in this manga. He also catches different pokemon and there lots of fun humor too. This book has great art! the pokemon look so life like! I really recomend this book!

              5 out of 5 stars A Great manga, with a different appearence..........2001-11-06

This manga is pretty good, but all the characters looking diferent...Brock, Ash,Jessie, James, and Misty look pretty much the same, but minor character such as Ash's mom, Bill, and Professor Oak get a serious makeover...I couldn't stop laughing after I saw Professor Oak, he looks nothing like the anime guy, seeing these makeovers alone justify giving this manga a chance....^_~

5 out of 5 stars The Best Comic I've Ever Read.......2001-02-07

This is probably the best comic I've ever read. It's actually a four book series (The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Pikachu Shocks Back, Electic Pikachu Boogaloo and Surf's Up Pikachu). I got these when the first came out when they were magazines with flimsy covers and pages you have to be extremely careful with. When I finally got around to getting the last to parts they had finally been released in paperback. I liked the paperback so much that I bought the other two parts in paperback. I'd recommend that you get the paperback for several reasons. First of all: It's easier to store. Second: It's easier to carry around with you. The magazines are actually four different magazines each part. (So in total you would have 16 little magazines to carry around if you wanted to have them with you. A real hassle.. trust me).

3 out of 5 stars The Uncensored Japanese was Better.......2000-05-03

For all those people who thought this was good,, you guys don'tknow anything. I have the original Japanese Pokemon manga by OnoToshihiro. It is much better than the English. The uncensored originalworks are better. Tentomushi Comics Special prints it crisper and the paper is whiter. I would recommend the original works. I rated this Pokemon manga 3 stars because of the censorship.

4 out of 5 stars "the practical socialite thinks of everything".......2005-02-18

This tastefully designed Book of Etiquette reveals the invaluable advice of Keeping Up Appearances Hyacinth Bucket who has waged "eternal vigilance against encroaching tides of indelicacy" to make her suburban district "one of the most sought-after postal codes in the land." The book is written in the voice of Hyacinth herself as she answers letters from her myriad of admirers. In this book, the aspiring hostess will learn how to organize a candlelight supper, from designing the proper, embossed, mantelpiece-worthy invitations and planning appropriate seating arrangements to maintaining high standards in the quality of one's bathroom linen. Other topics concern ways to deal with tradesmen, the proper use of the telephone, how to maintain a healthy body and mind, one's role in organized religion and charity work, what books and art to appreciate for a proper cultural education, and the importance of wearing the correct hat. The book is filled with scores of photos from the BBC comedy as well as many references to the many tricky situations Hyacinth encounters-and conquers, of course-in the show. I am removing a star from the score because much of the book is made up of recaps of episodes that most KUA fans have seen many times; however, fans will enjoy the extras tidbits offered here, such as Hyacinth comparing her sisters' personalities to their flowery names, and what attracted her to Richard. There is even a photo of Sheridan (well, sort of).

This book is very well-written and beautifully-designed and not the rush job a lot of these television related books tend to be. There is even an index of topics in the back. Clive Swift (Richard) even remarked on how impressed he was in the book during the Peppermill interview with Patricia Routledge (available as an extra on the DVD "Living the Hyacinth Life"). A must for any fan and remember "keeping up appearances is not the most important thing in life, it is the only thing."

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Gem!.......2001-11-09

The Brits have a wonderful knack for taking the scripts (or bits thereof), incorporating them into a book ostensibly written by the character herself, and coming up with something fresh and every bit as hilarious as the series itself. Such is certainly the case with Hyacinth Bucket's Book of Etiquette.

With this book, Hyacinth responds to questions of etiquette from the "socially less fortunate." Her responses and anecdotes (which often contain snippets of dialogue taken from the scripts) are well-seasoned with her own opinions and thoughts; the result is just hilarious. Hyacinth has even included an index for the reader, which contains gems such as "index finger, correct use of" and "husbands, uses of."

For the person who just can't get enough of that Bucket woman, this lovely 191-page book, which contains an abundance of black & white photos (scenes from the series) is a must-have. A book to be read and re-read, it is every bit as enjoyable as the series upon which it is based. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars When you can't watch the TV show, read the book!.......2001-04-20

This book is a must-have for any fan of the series "Keeping Up Appearances." The format: Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet", of course) has written this book to help we, the readers, improve our social skills and graces, hopefully avoiding the complications her friends and family have caused her! She cites examples from the first few years of the series of what to do and what not to do (basically, don't do what Onslow does and you're on the right track already)! It is full of photos from the show, and even includes a family tree. A fun item for the Hyacinth fan!

3 out of 5 stars Funny, But not great.......2000-06-30

While I am a big fan of Keeping Up Appearnaces, I found this light-hearted book, as well as funny and well layed out, just quoting bits of Hyacinth's adventures from the show. But that's to be expected i guess. Still, this IS a good little book, Enjoy!

                  Book Description

Although the "coming of age" story has been a popular film plot for decades, producers have only recently realized the commercial potential of targeting films to adolescent girls. Movies like Clueless, Legally Blonde and Mean Girls have been successfully marketed to teenage girls, as have several well-known independent films. Important as both cultural indicators and catalysts, these films simultaneously demonstrate pop culture's influence on girls' films, and the ability of girls' films to affect pop culture and perceptions of girlhood.

This critical survey of film and the modern girl concentrates largely on films of the last two decades, addressing key themes for girls within "coming of age" films, the changing (but not always improving) young feminine paradigm, and the ways these films can be powerful determinants of culture. The first chapter explores the ways in which girls' films construct, reinforce, challenge and dismantle mainstream conceptualizations of sexuality, race and power. The second chapter discusses mainstream limitations of "coming of age" narratives, including recycled plots and stars, treatments of parental and male authority, and adult conceptualizations of adolescence. The third chapter describes girls' experiences within these narratives through such conventions as attitude, teen fashion, music and dance, unsanctioned rites of passage, and race. The fourth chapter covers the negotiation of sex and sexuality, virginity and sexual empowerment.

A most enjoyable read. Mr. Scoblete tells you how it is for slot players and you'll smile or laugh out loud while reading his book.....a lot, as a matter of fact. He makes knowing you're probably gonna lose a bit more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and informative look at slots and casinos.......2005-07-23

My wife bought me this book as a birthday gift. And what a gift.
It's a delightful combination of gambling information and fun.
I laughed from start to finish.

The book revealed a number of insider secrets about today's casino operations and the revolution in traditional reel-spinning and multiline video games. Especially interesting
was the author's revelation about "loose" slots. What a
                    "loose" slot really is.

The author's account of his slot-themed road trip through
the United States made enjoyable bedside reading. Especially
after a hard day's play at the slots.

If you enjoy a good laugh and wish to learn the absolute latest
about today's casinos and their new generation of slot machines,
this definitely is the book for you.

                    1 out of 5 stars Warning!!.......2004-11-16

Warning! This guy could be Michael Moore's roommate. Everything about it was a waste of time and not to mention the money. What kind of desperate loser writes a book about playing slot machines to expound tired liberal beliefs. Worse, the slot information is in rehashed "duh" territory you can find anywhere. All things considered, this could be the worst book ever written about slot playing in the history of gaming. Reading and realizing you spent money for this book is akin to watching your last coin hit two red sevens and a blank.

                    2 out of 5 stars I'll take the pamphlet.......2004-09-01

The good news about this book is that it does provide the reader with some good insight about slot machines. The bad news is that the information it contains would fit inside a pamphlet and the rest of the book is filled with lame jokes and enough cliched one liners to fill a dozen cancelled sit-coms.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment.......2004-08-21

I waited so long for this book. And when I finally got it, I couldn't be any more disappointed.
First of all, I search on the net for books on this suject. Frank Scoblete's came out as some of the best books on the subject. And this book was on printing but not released yet. I thought "...even better, I am going to get the latest advise..." When I got the book, I found that Scoblete only wrote the Foreword.
The book reminds me one of those yellow Idiot Guides to___ books. Joking around, instead being serious and to the point. And even those guides, after all, give you good information.
There is not any advise that would help to play better at slot machines. Not even information about what machines are better, how to play then, no strategies. Nothing. Just stories of Legato's experience in different casinos in different towns.

If anyone told you that investing in the stock market was the safest investment you could make, you might raise an eyebrow. However, if Jeremy Siegel tells you this, prepare to be convinced. Siegel's book, Stocks for the Long Run, is a comprehensive and highly readable history of the stock market that dramatically makes the case for long-term investing in stocks.

In summing up his approach to investing, Siegel writes, "Poor investment strategy, whether it is for lack of diversification, pursuing hot stocks, or attempting to time the market, often stems from the investor's belief that it is necessary to beat the market to do well in the market. Nothing is further from the truth. The principle of this book is that through time the after-inflation returns on a well-diversified portfolio of common stocks have not only exceeded that of fixed income assets but have actually done so with less risk. Which stocks you own is secondary to whether you own stocks, especially if you maintain a balanced portfolio."

Stocks for the Long Run considers subjects as diverse as the history of the various market indices and what makes for a business cycle to contrarian indicators and the utility of 200-day moving averages. If you've just come into investing in the last few years and feel the need for a solid and comprehensive text about the market, Stocks for the Long Run is probably the best primer available. It also works as an excellent reference for seasoned investors and anyone else interested in how the market works. --Harry C. Edwards

I agree with the other reviewers that this book is an outstanding essay for those who want to learn how to select stocks for a value portfolio. Where we differ is that for the typical investor he does not have the resources to build a properly diversified portfolio- either financial or mental resources. Value stocks do provide returns in excess of broad market returns but in order to have adequate diversification you must assemble several hundred issues well beyond the resources of the average investor. Further one must have the time and skill to evaluate several thousand issues.

I can offer a solution to this problem. I want to recommend for you a book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 different stocks for $1000 - Pay no Commission This book is a must for those wanting to find out about indexing (passive investing) and why it is the superior method for the small investor (and big one too). This book is an outstanding guide to personal investing. It will be useful to all investors from novices to highly the highly experienced. This book prepares the reader to approach investing from the standpoint of the underlying science. It is the antithesis of a 'get rich quick scheme'.

All aspects of Modern Portfolio Theory and passive (index) investing are explained in a through and easily understood manner. The aspect I like most is that as well as a solid theoretical foundation the book is very practical and shows the reader how to create (and more importantly) and manage over time a successful portfolio. This is a great book- for the beginning investor, it's a great place to start and for the experienced investor there are many valuable suggestions.

It's a shame to think of how much money investors have lost "investing" in the stock market over the years. I wish I had read this little book years ago. The chapter on automatic investing recommends a number of portfolios that follow modern portfolio theory and adjust risk as you age without any effort on the part of the reader at all. Had this book been written years ago and had I followed its directions I would be rich today of that I am certain. Nevertheless I will pursue one of the portfolios recommended and stick to my chosen asset plan.

This book clearly illustrates the need to be disciplined as an investor. Unfortunately, as many Americans do not exercise this discipline they will never achieve the potential returns that can be had in the market. This book should be mandatory for all students to read and study probably at the high school level.

Stocks for the Long Run: The Definitive Guide to Financial Market Returns and Long-Term Investment Strategies Jeremy J. Siegel

Stocks for the Long Run makes the most convincing case for long-term stock market investing. Part history book and part finance book, it is brilliant. I want to give this book to my clients who want to put all or most of their money in CDs, bonds and other debt instruments. Siegel uses historical records to prove that well allocated, diversified stock investments truly are the best way to steadily accumulate wealth over time. His historical narrative also turns what could be just another hard-to-read investment book into a compelling story -- there really is a great deal of drama in the retelling.

If you read this book you will be armed with information to make educated choices about how to invest your hard earned money. Weathering the stock markets ups and downs can be a profound challenge to the uninformed investor. This book provides a perspective that allays some fears and offers cautions as well. Stocks for the Long Run will help you make good investment decisions, and give you confidence in the decisions you make.

When you are done with this book, DO NOT LOAN IT TO ANYBODY. I lost my first copy when an intern did not return it. I lost the next copy when a friend gave it to his mom.

Reading this book will give you a better understanding of the financial markets than 99% of the people around you. If you do not understand any part of the book, skip it and go back later. For a first book, there is none better.

If you are already knowledgeable, it is still a great read.

This is a helpful book for novice investors and those more experienced. The main point he makes is that in the long run, stocks are the safest investment, the best hedge against inflation, better than bonds or money market accounts. This book is very valuable for Siegel's detailed historical research into the long term returns of stocks, and the causes of the big crashes and bull markets. Siegel explains well why interest rates are such an important indicator of market trends. This book is mainly useful for devising an overall strategy to market investing rather than help picking specific stocks. Siegel suggests that a buy and hold strategy is best. Highly recommended.
