5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece by one of 20th-century art history's Old Masters.......2005-07-23

this book (in my opinion) shows Gombrich's best qualities as historian AND art critic. In his earlier publications, Gombrich famously established that "realist" representation was as much dependent on the transmission of schematic and/or conventional patterns as those arts identified as "decorative" or "abstract." In "The Heritage . . ." he maps the history of the representational conventions at work in the most magically compelling of early Renaissance "realisms"--the rendering of light (direct, reflected and refracted) in Flemish painting. By focusing historical attention on light effects, rather than on linear perspective (initially, a Florentine invention), Gombrich has made it possible to rethink the whole of Renaissance painting's cultural significance, as a creative application of the ancient and medieval science of optics--the systematic study of light and visual perception. The textbook characterization of Renaissance art still privileges the "mathematical" rigors of perspective-rendering over the "intuitive" mimicry of light (and its corollary, color), but Gombrich brilliantly demonstrates that they are the two sides of a single coin, each concerned with translating into pictorial formulas the mechanisms of light's transmission and light's reception by the eye.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read.......2004-08-30

This book can apply to women and men! Tina Knowles tells that a person should develop there own look using color, fabrics etc.

It's funny how Tina writes that a person is bootylicious, when they come up with their own stlye. But when a person follows all of the latest fads etc., they are nasty/trasy. And I couldn't disagree. It's a good read

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2003-07-18

Even though it's full of really great ideas and tips. I would like to see some works that she has done for Non-Destiny's Child people.

      4 out of 5 stars A good read...but really a good buy?.......2003-01-25

A longtime fan of Destiny's Child, I enjoyed this book. It was an inside peak at the lives of the triple platinum trio...but I found the price a little sketchy. Tina Knowles (Beyonce's Mom) also gives tips on how to look awesome, but the majority of these tips are old. Really...how does she expect us to run around customizing everything, and it'll turn out looking amazing? Hmmm. If you recieve this book as a gift, it's good, but I would recommend buying it unless you have experience in customizing.

      5 out of 5 stars Destiny's Style is Bootylicious!.......2002-10-15

If you want an engaging peek in the sass, flash and pizazz of this hotter-than-thou trio, look no further. Destiny's Style rocks the proverbial house, giving you an insider's look at the girl group's rockin' style, impeccable taste, and bangin' wardrobes. A must have for any fan or celebrity obsessed fashionista!

        3 out of 5 stars Dilbert's Improving with time..........2005-04-25

All of the characters have not yet appeared in their final forms, and I still don't find myself laughing out loud on every page, but there is usually a smile on my face as I read this book.

Over time, the characters became far more fleshed out and more interesting. This is a bit of an inflection point, if you'll forgive the horrific reminders of Calculus. From here, the betterment of Dilbert really starts to pick up.

If you are a completist, or you haven't ever read it, I would suggest picking it up. If you have seen it, you probably won't read it again and again, the way you might later collections. I leave it up to you.

4 out of 5 stars Too close to the truth for comfort.......2003-01-27

The scary thing about Dilbert, I've just realized, is not so much that it resembles the company I work for so many times, but the fact that it must resemble more than just my company alone to account for its growing appeal. I guess in my heart of hearts I was hoping that if I ever moved to another company, I could leave the Dilbertisms behind--fat chance, it seems.

Dilbert is well on its way to becoming a classic comic strip. Like the ones canonized before it, it has been able to take a segment of our society (Doonesbury) or life (Calvin and Hobbes) and relieve our tension. Adams is the one writer who can actually answer the question, "Where do your ideas come from?" because he often receives what becomes next week's strip from a reader email. As long as there are companies searching for answers in a changing marketplace, Adams will likely have material. Me, I'm just glad someone is enjoying the situation.

5 out of 5 stars Its Obvious That Adams Can Survive By His Wits Alone!.......2002-09-24

Most comic books, to me, are funny. But I can't really tell any difference from book to book. For some reason, this book strikes me as the funniest in my collection of about 5 Dilbert books. While Dilbert isn't my most favorite cartoon (probably because I'm not an adult), but its the one that I can laugh the most at particular outrageous strips. Want 476 good laughs for twelve bucks??? Buy it Now!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Dilbert's First Large Book.......2002-08-19

This is the first large Dilbert book in which we are given color Sunday strips in addition to the regular black-and-white regular strips. This book covers strips from May 19, 1991 to December 13, 1992. The Boss begins to take the form we are familar with (the pointy hair starts) and Wally comes into existance. Alice also begins to take form in this book. One of my favorite characters (and one whom Scott Adams has used rarely) is Zimbu the monkey and he shows up here as well. The strip continues to improve in the pages of this book. Great for light reading or a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dilbert Book.......2001-09-18

In this book, we start to see the true sides of the boss and Wally, and the true side of Dilbert's crazy office life. But, it blends in perfectly with Dilbert and Dogbert's life outside of work. Whether it's a meaningless meeting or a walk with Dogbert, it's always a ton of fun. So join Dilbert, Dogbert, the pointy haired boss, Wally, and the rest of the office crew in this delightful compilation book, that includes, for the first time ever, regular comics plus Sunday comics!

The short humorous essay is a form that few writers can master. Sure, pithy and funny are easy enough (if you are, in fact, pithy and funny), but the failings of most humorous essays come from a lack of seriousness. Humor is most effective when the writing articulates a clear, thoughtful point of view. The essays in Michael Thomas Ford's Alec Baldwin Doesn't Love Me & Other Trials from My Queer Life are perfect models of the form. Ford, who writes a syndicated column titled "My Queer Life," can muse on anything from Martha Stewart's manias to his devotion to Alec Baldwin's chest, from the elusive gay gene to right-wing Fundamentalist Christianity (in which he was raised), and he manages to make us laugh and sometimes even cry. His ironic view of a world that keeps threatening to be wonderful but never quite succeeds dovetails perfectly with his desire for world peace, freedom for gay people, and better sex. Witty, funny, and surprisingly moving, Michael Thomas Ford explains life to us and it actually begins to make sense.

4 out of 5 stars Alec Baldwin and His Hairy Chest...are Something to Write About!.......2006-06-27

This title was one heck of a fun read! Especially enjoyed the chapter "Dyke The Halls" and "Singing A Different Tune". This book was enjoyable as it served as a reminder of some of the same situations that happened to me in my younger queer life. The two chapters I have cited were very funny and caused me to often laugh aloud. The other chapters were fun as well. Ford is an excellent writer and I don't think you can miss with any of his work. I have read several of MTF's novels "Last Summer", and "Looking For It" among them. This title was very different than the above mentioned novels but every bit as enjoyable. I highly recommend anything written by this talented author. You can't miss with him. Don't miss this one! It's a fast read (I read the entire novel on a flight from California to Florida). Thanks Mr. Ford, I look forward to your future endeavors.

5 out of 5 stars A little insight in an insecure world..........2003-12-05

I have all of Michael Thomas Ford's books (just ordered the newest collection today!), and I'd have to say that him and I are pretty much alike. I'm glad that there are people out there that, like me, just don't get it. I thought I was the only one who worries about things such as the dog sleeping on the bed or my boyfriend not calling enough. It's nice to know there are some people out there who are neurotic as I am...

5 out of 5 stars Michael Thomas Ford is Hilarious!.......2003-12-05

I recommend all of his books (That's Mr. Faggot to you etc) - they are very funny, well written and really amusing. I am constantly disappointed by gay humorous books (like Bob smith's lame book) but Mr. Ford never disappoints.

Since the chapters are so short it is great for reading on the train or before bed.

I can't wait for his next one.

5 out of 5 stars How can Alec not love this book?.......2002-01-03

Michael Thomas Ford finds humor everywhere, but especially in his sexual orientation, and how different kinds of people respond to it. I laughed constantly while reading his observations on life. Alec Baldwin might not love the author, but how could he not love this book?

(Duane Simolke's books include The Acorn Stories, Degranon, and New Readings of Winesburg, Ohio.)

              5 out of 5 stars Straight Talk.......2001-12-09

Perhaps I should preface this by stating that I've always considered myself to be someone who, if nothing else, is a man whose politics tend to lean definitely to the 'left'. On more than one occassion I've been accused of being ( gasp! ) Liberal so I now, throwing caution to the wind, wear the badge proudly....so to speak. It must be my Irish/Democrat upbringing! Nevertheless, although my sexual orientation may be considered 'straight' ( Gwynneth Paltrow please call me! ) I one day found myself in Lambda Rising, a gay bookstore here in Wash.D.C., browsing the racks ( and only the racks, thank-you! ). Being the odd man out has never truly bothered me.... plus where there are books, so there am I!

Without going into detail of the experiences of a 'straight' man finding himself in a gay bookstore ( a book in itself! ) I spied Michael Ford's novel and finding the title so engaging, and with my curiosity piqued, I started to read....and I read and read, all the while laughing, so hard that I thought they were going to physically throw me out of the store for vagrancy! Well, I succumbed and purchased a copy ( with little self-respect intact after embarrasing myself to no end! ) of "Alec Baldwin Doesn't Love Me...." and still after owning my copy for a little over a year I find myself still chuckling.

I won't pretend to truly understand anyone's else's lifestyle ( alternative? ) other than my own ( and who really understand's the opposite sex? ) but I must say that Mr. Ford's book of essay's not only left a smile on my face but perhaps gave me a little more of an understanding into the life of the average ( average? ) Gay individual. Can straight people say Queer...I'm really not sure what is PC here. Just curious! Anyway, upon hearing that even in humour some truth's abound I find Michael's book a compelling read, and not just for other's of the same sexual proclivity, but for other so called 'straight' guys as well, if nothing else than to help us all better understand each other. Granted some of the book does seem rather like a cliche at times but that's a small point indeed. Michael makes some valid points about these little crisis that each of us face in our everday lives. Plus, I guess I was pleasantly surprised ( why I don't know ) to learn that after all is said and done that we all , to one degree or another, want basically the same thing.... love , security, a little happiness and secure in the knowledge that each of us, in some small way, is helping make the world perhaps just a little better than we found it. Fortunately, Michael finds humour in these everyday complexities and thank-goodness for that! Yes, I did laugh at Michael's book but I also found someone who was perhaps searching....and, like many of us, still is.

So whether you're gay, straight or 'somewhere in between' (I'm not sure what THAT means! ) pick up a copy, call up a friend, hopefully one of a diffrent sexual orientation, and laugh and learn at the same time. It's a start. I'm certainly glad I did! Now if I could only get Gwynneth's phone number!

Everything you ever wanted to know about movies, music of the past decade is in this book. White is a brilliant critic and thinker. I attended his music video lecture in Dallas and was astounded at the wealth of information and insight he provided. This book is well worth reading, but Overlook Press ought to put it out in paperback so that more students of music video and movies can afford to have it and underline th e great insights and critiques. White is the best culture critic working in America today.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Brilliant pop criticism by the best critic in America!.......1998-07-06

When I started reading White's controversial reviews in the New York Press I sought out this collection for more of his urbane insights and fearless honesty. This is one of the best books of cultural criticism I've ever read. I've recommended it to my American studies professors and he has already promised to use essays from The Resistance in future classes. (The Schindler's List and Spike Lee and Terence Davies pieces are especially detailed interpretations.) Among my favorties chapters are those devoted to the British singer Morrissey and the devastating critique of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. "Tarantino may know New Wave conventions, but he doesn't understand New Wave convictions," White says and that hits the nail on the head. What a brave, beautifully written book. I recommend it to everyone who cares about modern culture, whether film, music, TV. Everyone should know this book.

Finally! A book on pop culture that's more than a flashy press release stating the obvious--which is what most of today's criticism consists of. Finally, a book filled with intelliegence, sensitivity, careful observation and damnit--PASSION! Armond White is making sense of all the nonsense that's put out there for public consumption. For those not familiar with Armond White's work, be prepared for a shock. Along with some very fine reading; Mr. White writes on figures as challenging and popular as: Michael Jackson, Prince, Steven Spielberg, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Eddie Murphy, Spike Lee, Madonna, Ice Cube, Brian DePalma, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, Morrissey, Metallica, Marky Mark, RuPaul, Dr. Dre, Quentin Tarantino, Fab Five Freedy, Robert Altman and many, many more!
It's not that Mr. White covers these subjects--many of these guys get coverage in such mainstream magazines like Rollling Stone, Spin, Premiere, Etc... But here's what makes Mr. White special--he writes, no he looks past hype and investigates a particular work of art and looks into what makes it special (or not so special). In short, he makes a careful examination of the ideas that these works bring up. Ideas that usually are ignored or glossed over in mainstream pop journalism. In doing this, he exposes the biases inherent in most pop culture reporting and also the segregation in pop journalism.
Subjects covered here include: the appropriation by the mainstream of hip-hop culture, the rise of Black independent and Hollywood filmmakers and the challenge (or lack thereof) their films provide, the deceptive (or is it Death-ceptive?) funkiness of Dr. Dre's music, Increasing visual illiteracy in the watching of movies, Steven Spielberg and why despite his poor crtitical reception--he matters, Understanding Michael Jackson (you'll won't find this ANYWHERE else!), etc...
              The more you read Mr. White's prose, the more you'll witness for yourself the revelation it is. Take for example this excerpt !from UNDERSTANDING MICHAEL JACKSON;
              (on MJ's changing physical complexion)

"...only the intimates of Jackson's life have a right to complain--or be surprised--at the physilogical changes he has made of himself. The skin lightening, eye widening, nose sharpening, chin clefting, plus hair weave and processing are mad-scientist variations on the ethnic grooming and image creation that have long been part of the Black performer's understood contract with the white-controlled world of show business. Most artists submit to it to some degree. Jackson's only gone the Jewish entertainer's nose-job ritual--known as the "Hollywood circumsicion"--several organs better..."
See! And that's only on the first page! Check it out!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An original voice, and a fine critic........1997-02-03

I always love White's writings in the City Sun and Film Comment, and here they all are in one place! He's a real rebel, and his opinions are as shocking at times as Pauline Kael's were in the early 60's, when her voice was new (and an affront to the Bosley Crowthers of the world). Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Informative business guide to strategy.......2006-08-23

I bought this book for a college class and kept it. While it is not the most exciting book, the case studies are an excellent guide to a wide range of business plans and strategies. The cases are divided into four categories: single business companies, diversified companies, implementing and executing strategy and ethics & social responsibility. The cases are very complete and interesting. The downside is the shelf life of the book - I would expect a new edition before long.

                  2 out of 5 stars Student Review.......2005-12-10

I am a student majoring in Business Administration who recently used this text in an upper-level management course. The book's writing is utterly superfluous. Boredom was frequently my sentiment as I weeded through unnecessarily labyrinthine sentences. The ideas in the book were occasionally interesting, but were usually ideas I had already developed on my own via simple intuition. Perhaps the most valuable part of the text is the section of case studies. This closing segment of the book contains many great ideas for student projects. Overall, this text disappoints me as a student
