5 out of 5 stars Animator's Ultimate Guide.......2007-09-04

It's an amazing book! Everything you want to know about the business and the pure art and joy of being an animator from the masters.

2 out of 5 stars Disillusioned. Skip It........2007-08-27

This is a biased and officially licensed piece of pro-Walt Disney propaganda. The animation tips from Frank Thomas, one of the greatest animators who ever lived, are priceless. But he and his buddy Ollie Johnston (who was not nearly as talented as Thomas) are biased, and as a history, it is severely flawed.

Many vital artists to the Disney style of animation are given the shaft, which essentially anyone outside of the Nine Old Men. Fred Moore, Art Babbitt, and Bill Tytla are almost completely ignored. Director Jack Kinney and animator John Sibley, the team responsible for Disney's inarguably best short subject series, Goofy, are not even mentioned. They do a good job of erasing all of the 'bombs' such as Alice in Wonderland and Three Caballeros as well.

I also am repulsed at the lauding of such features as Robin Hood and The Rescuers, in favor of work by the studio many years earlier that was inarguably superior. And any tome this size that gives only four mentions to Dumbo is not worth owning.

Skip it.

5 out of 5 stars goldmine in need.......2000-07-31

this book is really very much demanded by the young animation student like my-self.so the publisher should try to reprint this kind of a goldmine of animation.and i am sure as the animation world is expandind day by day it will be demanded more and more.our library has a couple of book and some of the animators possess them but still every animator should carry this Bible the lifelong.

5 out of 5 stars Now I Know Why This Book is So Hard to Find.......2000-06-24

Finally, I found a used copy of this book in Chicago. I had heard it was the "Bible" of animation, but I was skeptical; I have seen too many glorified advertising campaigns sold in coffee table format. (Did we really need any background information on "Hercules?") But now that I actually own a copy and have been reading it - I am really blown away by how much I didn't know I didn't know.

This book gives a perspective on animation I have been searching for for a long time. Short of plunking down $10,000 to attend animation school, this book has helped me understand what is necessary to look for from an artistic angle when I am drawing. Over and over I have been told to draw more, but from what perspective, with what emphasis, to what end? All of that is covered in such an elementary way that I can't believe I never got it before now.

This book is worth all of the praise I have been hearing about it. It was also worth every ounce of energy I have used trying to find a copy to purchase. As for the negative comments I have heard about the reprint Hyperion version of this book, for me it simply doesn't matter. Can I see a difference in the plates? Sure I can. Is the information presented any less valuable or understandable? No. And that's the bottom line for me.

Amazing book. I can't believe it is out of print.

                  3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2006-11-29

This book is chock full of photos and information...I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the images though. I understand that the original photos are old, but I think the print quality in the reproduction on the publishing end might have been better. Fine if info only is what you are looking for, but if you are making copies to include in a project...don't expect too much.

5 out of 5 stars For those interested in historic fashions.......2006-11-04

I liked this book because, although it is mostly studio portriats of Victorians, they are often in everyday dress. If you like old photographs, you like this book, and if your looking for some 'design' elements for historic costumes then you'll love this book.

                  4 out of 5 stars Fantastic photos!.......2006-06-27

Costume resources from this period tend towards drawings from period magazines, and use highly stylized model forms. This great collection of pictures shows a wide range of people, in a fairly wide range of clothing types. The limitations of period phots are that the clothing is almost always the fanciest outfits the person owns, and does not reflect day to day wear. Other photos are clearly theatrical costume, but the author has clearly identified them as such, even where the oroginal information is missing.

As with any black and white source, colors are left to your imagination, but the details of finsh and construction that can be gleaned from the photos makes this a necessary tool in researching clothing of this era. Teamed with a Harper's Bazaar drawing reference, and an accessory reference, and you are ready to start making your own victorian clothing!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative........2006-01-26

Kristina Harris won my applause in her introduction, where she says that knowledge of costume AND knowledge of photographic processes must be used together for maximum accuracy in dating pictures. Seems obvious, but the obvious is seldom stated. She is certainly well-schooled in both fashion and photography. However, neophytes will find it difficult if not impossible to recognize each photographic process even with the best of written descriptions. This skill is attained through experience.

Readers may also be in danger of inaccurate dating if they take the guidelines provided in this book too literally. For instance, the popularity of carte-de-visite photographs may have peaked in the 1860s in Philadelphia, but they do not even appear until 1869 in frontier areas and are certainly more typical of the 1870's in Ontario.

The chief strength of this book as a resource is in the captions to the illustrations, which include the name and location of the photographer, the photographic format, the name of the sitter(s) if available as well as a few comments to indicate significant aspects of the costume. We don't have to jump to endnotes: the information is right there. Bravo!

Harris also knows to use "circa" (c.) to indicate that the date is a best guess. --And therein lies a weakness. This is yet another work in which photographs have been chosen to illustrate a history, as opposed to basing history on dated photographs as documentary evidence.

The warning that dates written on backs of photographs are "frequently added long after the photograph was taken" disquieted me. Although Harris is absolutely correct to warn us never to make assumptions, I worry that beginners will devalue what might be critical evidence. The fact is that folks often wore out-of-date or very personal choices in dress and that 'questionable' date may turn out to be right.

I gave this book three stars out of five for the above reasons, and because it is neither indexed nor sourced. An index based on photographer/city/sitter would have been very useful, and there is no bibliography.

                  Book Description

The baby boomers are turning 50 - one by one, at the alarming rate of every seven seconds for the next 16 years. And just how many will be happily looking forward to blowing out a galaxy of candles and admitting to the world that they're half a century old? Very few, in Allia Zobel's opinion. But that's because they're not looking on the bright side.

In a new collaboration after The Joy of Being Single (138,000 copies in print), Ms. Zobel and New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast take on another seemingly sore subject - being 50 in society that worships youth - and find excellent reasons to celebrate. Such as:

-You can get a tattoo and chalk it up to hormone imbalance.
-You can brag to your friends if a construction worker whistles at you.
-You can have complaining contests about your bunions.
-You look divine in hats and sunglasses.
-You're old enough to be a grouch.
                  -You can speak from experience.
-You now know the things you wish you'd known back when, and still have time to do something about it.
And while neither Ms. Zobel nor Ms. Chast is anywhere near the magic five-oh (it's the fluorescent lighting), they speak with authority as they advise all 50-year -olds to blow their own horn (if they have enough wind) and beat their own drum (arthritis permitting).

The type could have been bigger! But I like to give books like this to boomer friends and enemies for their birthdays. For people 50 and under, I'd also recommend giving a book called "Getting Old Sucks." The author will sign it for free.

                        Book Description

                        Film Studies/History

An innovative study of the intersections between history and film.

Exploring the modern category of history in relation to film theory, film textuality, and film history, Change Mummified makes a persuasive argument for the centrality of historicity to film as well as the special importance of film in historical culture. What do we make of the concern for recovering the past that is consistently manifested in so many influential modes of cinema, from Hollywood to documentary and postcolonial film? How is film related to the many modern practices that define themselves as configuring pastness in the present, such as architectural preservation, theme parks, and, above all, professional historical research? What is the relation of history in film to other media such as television and digital imaging? How does emphasizing the connection between film and modern historicity affect the theorization and historicization of film and modern media culture?

Pursuing the full implications of film as cultural production, Philip Rosen reconceptualizes modern historicity as a combination of characteristic epistemological structures on the one hand, and the social imperative to regulate or manage time on the other. Emphasizing a fundamental constellation of pursuit of the real, indexical signification and the need to control time, he interrogates a spectrum of film theory and film texts. His argument refocuses the category of temporality for film and cultural theory while rethinking the importance of historicity.

An original and sustained meditation on the historiographic status of cinematic signs, Change Mummified is both an intervention in film and media studies and an argument for the continuing necessity of modern historical thinking in its contradictions.

Philip Rosen is a professor of modern culture and media and of English at Brown University.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Choice for Beginners.......2006-02-11

Just went to the local bookstore to find some good books for my mother-in-law who has expressed an interest in family history. After reading through several excellent choices, I finally settled on Everything Family Tree by Kimberly Powell. The layout and format is very easy to follow and the writing is friendly, professional, and easy to understand. It covers every genealogy topic I can think of, including surname origins and DNA testing, plus research in all of the major record types. Not very expensive either, so I ended up buying a second copy for myself. An outstanding book for beginner to intermediate genealogists.

5 out of 5 stars My All Time Greatest Book On Consulting.......2007-09-08

This is the book that finally made it "click" for me.

I have bought copies for those I have coached and mentored and have seen them start right and quickly realize success for themselves.

A great book that should grace the bookshelf of any person just starting out.

To make it work you should be ready to work and actually use the tools and strategies provided.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Advice from an Experienced Consultant.......2007-08-24

This is the best read on consulting I have come across! The content is applicable to any consulting practice regardless of industry focus. The concepts in this book do require that you have an existing understanding of the industry and business environment you plan to work in but that should be considered a given if you are looking to call yourself a consultant anyway. If you can't get your practice up and running based on the detailed step by step processes discussed in this book nothing can help you! Buy it, read it, live it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for beginners.......2007-02-23

This is a very well-presented guide for anyone who is considering getting into consulting as a full-time business. It lays out the basic requirements and points you toward resources, but it does not contain detailed guidelines and legal advice, if that is what you are looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the Beginning Consultant.......2006-10-21

It is easily the best I have read on the subject.

For most beginning consultants, the major problem is the marketing of our services. Closely following is gaining the confidence to charge what our services are worth. In these two areas and more, Dr. Weiss book provides specific and detailed advice. Emphasising the relationship centred nature of the consulting profession, he insists, and I think most practitioners' experiences bear him out, that you must make the sale "conceptually" before you can hope to successfully make it in fact, in a manner that leaves all parties satisfied. In presenting your proposals, Dr. Weiss advices that you provide outcome based options, so that your prospect asks himself, "how should I use Alan?" rather than "should I use Alan?" which is what a single option proposal with time based fees will likely elicit.

I wish I had discovered Alan Weiss' books five months ago. A prospect had called me out of the blues for a consulting assignment. When I got to his site for preliminary discussions to understand the points of pain and scope the project, he handed me over to a subordinate. With no opportunity to build a relationship (a mistake), it is no wonder that when I presented my $20,000 proposal which provided no options (another mistake), the prospect immediately asked for a 30% discount. Not wanting to give the impression that my figures were pulled out of a hat, I pushed back and offered an 18% discount instead. The prospect is yet to commit.
                          ==========================
Fast forward two months. The client earlier referred to saw an article I'd written that touched the nerve of the issues facing his business and invited me back for a discussion. Then he again asked for a proposal. This time I offered three options, ranging from 30% to 80% above my original proposal. He chose the most expensive, negotiated it down (the final figure was still a full 50% above the original proposal). We commenced work on the project in December.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but be cautious of the directives and recommendations.......2006-10-06

This is a fairly comprehensive book on how to start a consulting business. I followed the steps outlined in the book to start my own business, but some of the recommendations Mr. Weiss makes go a little overboard. For instance, do you really need a copy machine? Do you really need a postage meter? Spending money on these things will burn through your start-up funds quickly!

One thing Mr. Weiss misses out on is how consultants should leverage the power of the internet to get the word out about their knowledge and expertise. Very surprising for a book with its latest edition published in 2003.
