    Book Description

Among the most beautiful and compelling works of Renaissance art, painted maps adorned the halls and galleries of princely palaces. This book is the first to discuss in detail the three-dimensional display of these painted map cycles and their full meaning in Renaissance culture.

Art historian Francesca Fiorani focuses on two of the most significant and marvelous surviving Italian map murals--the Guardaroba Nuova of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, commissioned by Duke Cosimo de’ Medici, and the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII. Both cycles were not only pioneering cartographic enterprises but also powerful political and religious images. Presenting an original interpretation of the interaction between art, science, politics, and religion in Renaissance culture, the book also offers fresh insights into the Medici and papal courts.

      Book Description

In this beautiful book, Aileen Ribeiro surveys the clothing worn by the middle and upper classes throughout Europe in the eighteenth century and discusses what this meant in terms of social definition and identity. Ribeiro, one of the world's premier historians of dress, also looks at such subjects as developments in retailing and distribution, etiquette, the rise of the dress designer and couturier, the evolution of ready-made clothes, fancy dress, and the masquerade. This new edition updates the text and bibliographical material in the previous highly acclaimed volume and adds many new illustrations in full color.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, fantastic illustrations, interesting text.......2007-05-16

One of the most beautifully illustrated books I have read, the text and gorgeous images combine to create a fascinating, informative, detailed book. Ribeiro does a magnificent job explaining the portraits and the era, explaining trends, exceptions to the general fashions, discussing icons that changed styles, and getting into the nature of fashion and costume. The myriad of color illustrations show differences between French and English fashions, middle and upper-class looks, day and evening wear, and some fantasy and extreme costumes of the era.

4 out of 5 stars Fop 'til you drop.......2005-09-04

It's hard to encapsulate everything that the 18th century was into a single volume, but as far as fashion goes, this book gives a darn good try. The pages are filled with period paintings and portraiture - excellent primary resources for research, but it would have done better to have photos of actual garments to survive the era (there are plenty in excellent condition in museums and private collections around the world), but that's just me being nit-picky. It's an excellent volume and an important resource for anyone studying the period.

        Book Description

In the early days of Baby Blues, Darryl and Wanda were surprised at the unexpected demands of parenting. Now, however, the nonstop antics of their lovably active kids, Zoe and Hamish, keep them hopping. Darryl and Wanda have accepted, and even learned to laugh at, the general upheaval of their lives. In I Shouldn't Have to Scream More than Once! the MacPhersons continue their quest to raise their two small children. One day, Zoe asserts she needs her mother to teach her how to jump rope-"It's a girl thing," she tells Darryl. Later, Wanda and Darryl are happy their son has gone to the potty himself, until Zoe queries, "Don't you want me to tell you where he went'" And Wanda resorts to feeding Hammie on the floor after Zoe spots him picking up old peas. At the MacPherson household, it's all fodder for fun that has a delightful edge of truth for parents the world over.

5 out of 5 stars Don't take it too seriously.......2004-11-01

Some of the best humor is based on exaggeration and this book is an example. It is a collection of cartoons from the Baby Blues syndicated column and they are funny, although you have to approach them with a lack of literalness. All parents will recognize the circumstances depicted in the cartoons, although for their sake, I hope their experiences are not so extreme. My favorite is one where dad is coaching a soccer team and at the end, he falls down exhausted and says, "Coaching is just parenting with a whistle." As a former soccer coach, I could relate to that one.
Read it for fun and don't take it too seriously.

        5 out of 5 stars Total Agreement.......2001-10-17

This is probably the funniest cartoon book ever published. With a drawing style to match even the best output of R.F. Outcault, Cliff Sterret, and Winsor McCay, it is also one of the most visually absorbing, seeming to involve more than just sight but also to draw in the other four senses as well for an unparalleled experience of sheer comic-strip ecstasy.

        1 out of 5 stars Being a mom..........2001-08-27

I must admit that being a mom is a hard job. But, I love my children and my life. Please do not think that these comics are true for all parents. My children love me, hug and kiss me and tell me how wonderful I am. I know this will change in teenage years... but, I will cling to these times. And, I do have to scream more than one sometimes. :)

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful gift for parents.......2001-07-11

This book had my husband and I laughing uncontrollably on a number of occasions... We have three children under seven and thoroughly enjoyed this inciteful and humorous vision of life with little kids... Reality in most households is that bright, healthy, active children DO a lot of the things portrayed in this book. Moms that stay home DO have days like that. Dad's do become speed-bumps when they lay on the living room floor. Just TRY to have a tender moment in any room there is a child! Believe it or not, making fun of these incidents is PART OF THE JOY of parenting. The ability to laugh at yourself and your kids while you are shaping them into respectfull, compassionate, responsible adults is a key ingredient to staying sane. And it is a blessing and a gift that these authors remind us that we are not alone in our challenges with our kids. If you haven't had children..... the rewards are great! Remember: this comic was created to make you LAUGH not to scare you or present what life with kids should or shouldn't be... it's just reflection on the dishevled moments of parent hood....

So relax... And have a great laugh.

4 out of 5 stars If you have an ax to grind, I don't want to hear it........2001-05-30

Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott put out a very funny cartoon strip. You don't have to be a parent to enjoy this cartoon, but if you are, it hits close to home more than once. It's also nice watching the kids get older (albeit slowly) in a medium that seldom allows it's characters to age at all.

That being said, if you have some ax to grind about something you hate, don't use this customer review area as your soap box. It makes you sound stupid and it's a waste of peoples time when they are looking for honest reviews. I'm glad people love Calvin and Hobbes and it's too bad Bill Watterson quit, but to compare that strip to Baby Blues, demonstrates a lack of knowledge about this strip. If everyone remembers, Calvin had some "despicable yuppie" parents too. I don't know how anyone can call this strip insidious. This strip is not sneaking up on any unsuspecting reader, spreading it's evil. Come on. And as far as unique jokes go, I guess you could say they're all (including Watterson, when he was doing Calvin) ripping off the late Charles Shultz, but that's not being fair to the cartoonists who do this for a living and try to be funny every day.

So if you bought this book and you loved or hated it, tell me why. If you're just angry, I really don't want to hear from you.

This book was not anything like I thought it was. It some sort of weird comic with a super hero playing the girl who was broken up with... Very corny...Lame...I returned it and asked for a refund...

1 out of 5 stars Juvenile, Not Funny.......2004-12-23

I think of myself as having a great sense of humor and I just didn't see what could possibly be funny about this book. It starts out with a stupid comic strip and never gets better. If you are looking for editorial content, DON'T READ THIS! Seriously, this book is a compilation of dumb comics, sketches, etc. Very juvenile! There are much better books out there like the "Between Boyfriends Book" from a writer of Sex and the City.

4 out of 5 stars It's a perfect gift when you don't know what else to say!!!!.......2000-09-09

If laughter is really the best medicine, then this book is your Rx for
getting over a breakup. Lynn Harris (a.k.a BreakupGirl) is a writer
and stand-up comic who has successfully combined both of those talents
          in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Guy Maddin fans.......2005-09-22

This little book is a great adjunct to Canadian director Guy Maddin's recent movie of the same title. It contains the screenplay of this silent movie, a selection of stills, and a truly hilarious interview with Maddin ("Chicken Soup for the Stone Baby"). In this interview, he claims that his delirious tale of lust, intrigue, murder and hand transplants among the hockey players and demimonde of Winnipeg in the 1930s, set mostly in a hockey arena, its locker room, and a combination beauty parlor/abortion clinic, is highly autobiographical. Both the screenplay and inerview make clear how confused and fused "reality" and "movie" are, some aspects of which aren't clear when first seeing the film. This book (cleverly designed to resemble a battered, old paperback) would be the perfect companion for the recently-released DVD of "Cowards Bend the Knee". Highly recommended!

Nurse With Wound, Coil and Current 93 are musically manifestation of the same creative force. They are interdependent and each compliments the others. David Keenen describes this connection beautifully in this work. It begins by describing the musical scene out of which the bands all took their shape. In the strange days of the early eighties the post punk musical world was really going into several directions: oblivious pop, new wave pretension, industrial and Goth and finally bands like Current 93 Coil and NWW. These sounded more similar in there early days than they do now but still have the same vibe. What's most interesting about them is that they keep artistic focus and this book tells this story in a beautifully bound form.

The book uses a lot of quotes and pictures to tell the story of these bands using information from collaborators of the bands. It is very well researched and while many have said it reads like journalism it seems more like academia to me. The style is great and with so little actual documentation to work with quotes are one of the few viable options. It is really interesting to peer into the lives of these individuals and sometimes it is stranger than fiction: Tibet Balance Stapleton and Christofersen lead bizarre lives. This is a part of why they make such interesting work. It would have been more interesting to me if there was more said about the specific influences of the artists and the works. While we can infer much there could certainly be more here. Nevertheless what is written in this book is very enlightening to me. We as fans of the work often dissociate Coil and John Balance as a distant cousin to c93 and NWW but reading this really put the perspective in order. This book puts the artists in perspective so that even a non fan would find it interesting.

Overall I really appreciated reading this book. Being a huge fan of these bands I would be happy with anything and have often been placated by reading incomplete web pages and bad 'zine articles. This book is far better than that and really makes me appreciate the music all the more. It is by no means definitive and is missing many other bands (most notably Death In June). But I guess the book would loose focus if it were to contain more bands. This is a book that you will love to have and read again and again. Being fans of musicians that the mainstream media doesn't care about or cant understand we are thrilled to see stuff like this.

            5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2004-06-07

The first question that comes to mind is: how can there be a biography of three bands in the same book? For me, the answer is quite simple...c93, NWW and Coil are pretty much three different and very individual manifestations of the same thing that moves all of them: strong vision and its brave living/making manifest through art, passion and honesty that come with it and, of course, complete integrity. So, actually i can't understand people who like coil and dont like c93, or like nww and dont like coil etc...i guess that reason for such "disliking" is pretty much always lack of understanding. Everybody's soul is potentially large enough to understand everything that is or can be.

The book is beautifully produced, just like every other reviewer has said. It is very well written, meaning it is very well investigated, with lots of information and many providers of these informations, so when the book discusses something, you will always get opinions from pretty much everybody relevant for the particular discussion. It follows bands chronologicaly, and there is no real "story" element, like many reviewers have said, but i quite like this since i find it more objective because of this. Also, the "lack of criticism" that other reviewers have mentioned is definitely there, but i like that too, since Keenan doesnt push his opinions on us, but rather lets people whose biography this is talk, and also lets us, the readers, have our own critic approach to the untainted facts and thoughts of people who we are reading about.

When it comes to balance between the three bands in the book, i guess its pretty much even, every band gets about one third of the book. Also, i don't think Keenan is drooling over david tibet in it, like some reviewers have stated.

It has to be mentioned that the first part of the book also deals with a lot of other relevant bands, since they were/are in one way or another related to nww/coil/c93, bands like whitehouse, crass, and, of course, throbbing gristle and psychic tv, and i mention this since they are MUCH more than just mentioned here. also, the book provides us with a great number of informations/thoughts from lots of people (pretty much everybody) involved with nww/coil/c93 throughout their history.

Another thing that i really like is that the book NEVER interferes with the really personal stuff of balance, sleazy, tibet or stapleton, like really specific things about relationships, friendships and so on...there is always some distance when it comes to privacy, which makes the whole thing really decent. this book lets privacy stay sacred and there is absolutely no voyeurism that is otherwise so present in today's media that it completely sickens me.

all in all, this is a great, very well done book, beautifully produced, and if you have the money and love these bands, just buy it, i really dont think you'll regret a single penny.

            4 out of 5 stars Essential reading..........2004-01-06

...for fans of C93, NWW, and/or Coil. But also for anyone interested in the postpunk, postindustrial explosion taking place in and around London in the early 1980s. Keenan painstakingly explores the collection of bands, performance artists, and various hangers-on in the wake of Throbbing Gristle's demise--the primordial soup that gave rise to Psychic TV, Whitehouse, Coil, Current 93, and others.

Other reviewers have noted Keenan's disjointed time line and magazine-article approach (lots of extended quotes), and while these are valid criticisms, I thought Keenan did great research and footwork, tracking down a lot of the people involved with the "scene," both then and now. From Genesis P-Orridge and John Fothergill to Tony Wakeford and Nick Cave, Keenan gets a diverse group of people to talk about the "secret history" of this music, painting a vivid portrait of the obsessions, the madness, and the sheer creativity that spawned the incredible music these three groups made.

I'm not a NWW or Coil fan (I bought the book largely because I love Current 93), but nevertheless I found myself interested in the other bands' stories, intertwined as they were in the development of C93. I still may not fully appreciate Steve Stapleton's surrealist music, but Keenan made me appreciate the mind and the creative approach behind NWW. Same with Coil, although I found myself less interested in their history, which seems to find them mostly wallowing in epic drug and alcohol binges.

The book also features tons of great photos from past and present--these alone are almost worth the price.

My only disappointment with "England's Hidden Reverse"--and it's a slight one--is Keenan's ultimate failure to get in touch with Death in June's Douglas Pearce, a key C93 collaborator and erstwhile friend of David Tibet. Keenan discloses that he tried to contact Pearce, but he never returned phone calls. Too bad--and very petty of Pearce, I thought. I would have liked a bit more illumination on just why Pearce's close friendship with Tibet fell apart. (Keenan attributes it to Pearce's objection to Tibet's association with the allegedly homophobic Tiny Tim, but that doesn't seem like it could be the only source of the extreme vitriol Pearce seems to have for Tibet nowadays, as evident on Death in June's "All Pigs Must Die" CD.)

Still, "England's Hidden Reverse" is an invaluable book, and I couldn't put it down until I'd read it twice through. Congratulations to Mr. Keenan on a fine job.

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous & informative but superficial.......2003-10-14

I was awaiting this book with anxiety, as there isn't much literature on these three bands - who I have followed for quite some time.

And when I finally received it through mail, I was very pleased with how it looked - really very well published, with beautiful rare photographs and a cd.

Unfortunately, the actual reading was a bit of a disappointment - after a while reading quotes all the time gets quite tiring. You can feel very strongly that the writer is a journalist, and the chapters feel very much like articles for a magazine. And a series of these articles do not make up a very gripping tale.

I felt that David Keenan should have reflected more on the music, instead of just filling the pages with quotes and commenting now and then superficially on the music, in a typical journalistic way.

I would have liked some more insights on musical development, some kind of concluding thoughts about what these artists are all about and - well, in general, more reflection instead of mere citation of insiders.

But still this is an invaluable book, with loads of information and background on these intriguing and brilliant artists.

4 out of 5 stars Secret History of Music.......2003-10-12

Keenan does a fine job introducing the people and events of an important and unfairly neglected era of modern music.

For readers unfamiliar to NWW, C93, and Coil, Keenan gives ample background, carefully reveals the appeal of his subjects' characters, and avoids becoming bogged down in esoteric details. Also, the included CD provides an excellent overview of the artists involved.

The retelling of the sometimes contradictory tales using the voices of those present keeps the reader guessing and keeps the mysterious nature of the groups somewhat intact -- a mysterious nature which is highly important to the reception of their music.

The weaknesses of the book really amounts to nitpicking since having such a voluminous biography of subjects with so little previous biographical information is rather miraculous. But here they are anyway:

Why include Coil? Apart from a few collaborations they aren't really very much a part of the NWW/C93 world.

Why focus on Tibet? Stapleton's musical history is longer and his world seems much more fascinating.

Why skim over the actual recordings? Not enough attention seems to be paid to a majority of recordings. Information about United Dairies is sketchy. More about the UD artists, especially Robert Haigh, would be welcomed. And the collective aesthetic that the UD, Come, LAYLAH and Le Rey record labels created seems to be a subject better explored.

A NWW/C93 only book might have had a better focus, and illuminated their world a little more thoroughly.

Otherwise, the book is a pearl.

Can't wait to see "England's Second Hidden Reverse: Colin Potter, Andrew Chalk, and Jonathan Coleclough".

4 out of 5 stars A recommended book, for Curious people, about Martha Graham.......2002-03-19

Agnes De Mille, has an objective view of Martha Graham, and at the same time, a very close relationship with the Artist. Her description on Martha's moods, are eloquent, and astute, as if you were Agnes De Mille herself, witnessing the intricate life of this Genius, Martha Graham.
The beggining of the book, might be a bit long if you are not a Dancer, but once it gets to the point, it is a very exciting book, you must own it.
            Enjoy your readding...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of a dance genius.......2002-03-18

It is unfortunate that this book is out of print, for it gives a overview of one of the most brilliant choreographers of the twentieth century. The mind and values of Martha Graham are exposed in detail by the author, and it serves its purpose in giving the curious reader insight into the life and dance technique of a woman who single-handedly developed one of the most original forms of movement to this date. Anyone who is overcome by watching the dances of Graham will definitely appreciate this book, written by a person who had known Graham for fifty-eight years. Included in the book are an excellent collection of black-and-white photographs, both of Graham and some of the people she worked closely with. Indeed, Graham was a beautiful woman, and her personality, as well as her physical beauty, are exemplified nicely in these photographs.

The knowledge one can gain from the reading of this book makes it well worth the time, for by reading it one can understand how Graham developed her technique, interestingly without any government aid; there was no National Endowment of the Arts to assist in her endeavors. Graham viewed dance as a celebration, and eschewed the attitude of those who danced for monetary gain. One reads of Graham's relationship with Louis Horst, and of the popularity of the writings of the philosopher Frederich Nietzsche among Horst, Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Isadora Duncan.

Graham's father told her that "bodies never lie", and this statment apparently had a major influence on her resulting "philosophy of dance", as well as the influence of Ruth St. Denis and Erick Hawkins. The author discusses the differences between the dance technique of Graham and Humphrey, the latter being characterized as mathematical by the author, the former emotional. But I find the Graham technique straightforward to view from a mathematical standpoint, if one is so inclined.

The technical aspects of the Graham technique are brought out nicely in the book, one example being the marvelous description of the "spiral fall" and its recovery. One also learns of the use of "plastiques", i.e, the posing and moving in scarves and costumes by the dancers. Also, it is interesting to learn of the omission of mirrors in the early Graham studios; lest the student, in the author's words, "drown in his own image". The class routine for the Graham dancers, particularly the floor exerices, along with the spasm of the the diaphragm, are the most well-known manifestation of the Graham technique, and are discussed nicely in this book.

It is fortunate that Graham was able to find such dedicated students for her classes. Forcing to live a frugal existence, these students found her dances a "religion that they served", according to the author. Indeed, if one has ever viewed modern dance performances of the Graham technique, one can see this attitude in the dancers, as though they were priveleged, and moving to a unique traceform in space never before executed.

The Graham technique is brilliant, and it forces one to rethink preconceived notions of what movement must be, and instead speculate on what it could be. Graham in her works made it readily apparent that gravity is real, but that it need not be a total master. Even on the floor the Graham dancers are in control, at least momentarily, interpolating brilliantly between order and bodily dissonance. Martha Graham, as protrayed by the author, was an innovator and a determined individualist, and has given us a unique collection of traceforms, both in our memories and in books and videos, that will embolden us and refresh us always.....

5 out of 5 stars The History of Modern.......2001-03-29

Agnes de Mille, a distinguished and popular choreographer in her own right, and a sometimes intimate friend of Martha Graham, has written an outstanding biography of this iconic woman. The story of Martha Graham is inevitably the story of Modern Dance-- which many would say she invented--and the history of American artists--of which she was the queen.

De Mille's book is both extremely informative and thoroughly enjoyable. She gives you the history you need in order to put Graham's revolutionary dance technique in context, and then she offers personal insights and observations on the life, love affairs, personality, triumphs, and tragedies of the inimitable Martha.

A portrait of a truly incredible, inspiring, tiny giant of a woman by another who is at least her equal in intellect and probably in artistry as well.

For anyone interested in dance, this book is an absolute must.

I bought this book after I wrote my business plan, and thankful that I did because it made clear to me that my original effort was off target. This book significantly improved my business plan draft, which is now much more informative, impressive and professional on account of having this resource. Write your business plan correctly the first time with this book, or alternatively, as I did, utilize this book to quality control your original business plan.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference material.......2006-03-14

Looking through the table of contents for this handy little book I cannot help feeling that this is a book for people who know the basics already about what goes into a business plan. That is, this book is a handy reference, but probably not the most useful for the complete beginner. It contains details, definitions, and some suggestions. I think that someone who went through a business program and who has already read about or completed a business proposal will find this useful.

5 out of 5 stars Rich in know-how, extensive in coverage & resources.......2005-12-27

This book is a gold mine of information.

A key point is that the material applies quite as well to an established business as it does to a startup or new business seeking financing. The result is that from a technical management standpoint the material is both strong and deep.

This book is especially strong in market analysis and sales forecasting. I have done a great deal of this work. From experience, I can say that the author's descriptions and recommendations are very well done. This is particularly important because the sales forecast becomes the cornerstone of all the numbers that make up the key financial section of the business plan.

Even more important the marketing analysis has to support the fundamental judgment that there is a market and that it is reasonable to assume that the market will yield the sales and cash inflow, which the business will require.

The book is rich in reference material such as a chapter on financing fundamentals and financing services, a glossary and a section with general business resources such as business associations and various internet resources. A section called Sources of Industry Information should have you well on your way to a thorough preparation of your Industry Analysis.

This book is written in the straightforward business language style that the authors recommend for your own business plan. The writing is not exciting but understandable and very efficient. The authors cover vast conceptual areas with language that is brief without being either misleading or incomplete.

Those lacking a business background may have to flesh out some sections from other sources. However, they will have enough information to determine the what, how and why each topic needs to be applied to their business.

For experienced people it is a great concept refresher, a good checklist and a source of much resource information.

                  Strongly recommended.
