albeit few pictures, best account of pre-1940 silverwork........1998-05-29
The book describes many facets involved in the creation of Pueblo Indian jewelry. This book is quite possibly the best and perhaps only scholarly work that explains jewelry making from the Indian perspective. The book gives much insight into the conditions on pre-1940 reservations and the trade practices that gave rise to "dead pawn" jewelry. This book is a must for serious collectors and those seeking thorough research. However, the book gives very little attention to the Harvey phenomenon, preferring to deal more directly with traditional Native American art (i.e. the jewelry that the creators would wear on themselves).
a very comprehensive text.......1998-01-01
the book gives in both words and photos the entire history of native silversmithing from its inception to the mid 1940 when the book was frst published. An excellent companion book to one of the many books written on comtemporary native american jewelery making.
Book Description
500 years of French fashion are reproduced directly from a rare and valuable 19th-century publication. Artfully rendered illustrations progress chronologically from the voluminous robes of 15th-century royalty to the Empire styles of the Napoleonic era. Members of the nobility are well represented, as are dapper pages, knights, chambermaids, milkmaids, and shepherdesses. 76 full-color plates.

Great Pictorial Guide .......2005-09-17
Dover's edition is reproduced from colorplates
from "Modes et Costumes Historiques" (Paris, 1864).
It is a very good guide to fashions of the nobility
and general costume of the peasant/working class,
including women and men, a doctor, page,
shepherdess, and chambermaid, etc.
There is a List of Plates at the front, but no Introduction, Index in the back, or glossary of terms. Plate captions include the Plate number, General Title, Date.
(ie: "Plate 3. Women from the outskirts of Paris (reign of Charles VIII), 1443.")
This edition would go well with Dover's
_An Illustrated Dictionary of Historic Costume_ or
_A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion Historic and Modern_.
The book is well worth it for fashion enthusiasts! As an art historian and illustrator, I find Dover's color plates extremely useful for accurate patterns and fabric colors.

Serious tricks for the serious magician.......2003-01-10
This is another great book by Jean Hugard densely packed with card tricks and other sleights - over 120 in all. Some things to consider: (1) these are not simple tricks, and will require significant practice to master (i.e., they are not self-working card tricks); (2) the text is sometimes difficult to follow and may require multiple readings. Otherwise, this is a very valuable resource for the serious card manipulator.
The Best Card Trick Book Ever!.......2002-07-15
I reccomend this book for anybody who even has a "sleight" interest in card tricks. It's clever tricks and invisible sleights will allow you to amaze anybody, including other magicians. This excellent book brought me from a cub scout magician to a serious and amazing amateur. Please don't buy it so that magicians like me can still amaze guys like you.
Terrific potpourri of sleights, flourishes, and tricks.......2000-12-27
If I could take lessons from one card magician living or dead, I'd probably pick Jean Hugard. Although he wrote decades ago, his ideas are so timelessly fresh that the serious student of card magic will rejoice when reading this book--it's equally as good as "Card Manipulations." Like its predecessor, it has sleights, tricks, and flourishes that cover the gamut from intermediate to truly advanced. I wouldn't, however, recommend the two Card Manipulation books as first choices--"Expert Card Technique" is a more comprehensive source for sleights and "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" describes all manner of tricks. But if you want all of Hugard's major works--and you will--you'll spring for the reasonably priced "Card Manipulation" books. They are that good.
The best book ever.......2000-04-21
Teaches alsome tricks for any level of skill. A must for any learning wizard

A superb reference for students and fans of American music........2000-02-04
From classical recordings to classic rock, Encyclopedia of Northwest Music identifies the unique sounds of Northwest musicians, revealing the lives and influences of those who have made not only a regional name for themselves, but who've influenced music around the world. Profiles of the Kingsmen, Treepeople, Quincy Jones, and others are provided in a fine guide to a range of local styles from rock and pop to jazz and folk.
A Good Reference Tool.......2000-01-04
Having been away from the Pacifc Northwest 60's music scene too long, I was pleased to see many familiar names of bands and musicians I knew from those years. At the same time, I was disappointed to see that the late 50's to mid-60's music scene in Tacoma was largely missing. This seems to be the norm for books on PNW rock history.
Except for the standard Wailers, Sonics, Ventures, and Bluenotes, it seems Tacoma continues to be skipped over. That is a shame, because Tacoma also had a huge and vibrant rock music scene during those years. I was pleased to finally see more written on the Dynamics and Frantics, but only a "mentioned by name" for the Statics, and no mention at all for the Galaxies, Beachcombers, and dozens of other really fine bands.
Still, this is a valuable reference and resource tool for those wanting to learn more about Rock music history of the PNW, particularly if your interests are Seattle or Portland. Eventhough disappointed in content because of my Tacoma roots, I am glad I bought this book. I know how hard James Bush must have worked on it, as my research into the Tacoma rock scene of the early to mid 60's has also consumed much of my time and I'm not even writing a book (yet).

If you want to go hunting for big business revenue, this is the why and how guide to success........2007-08-06
It is obvious that Steve Kaplan really understands the processes and organizational support needed to not only land business with big accounts, but also to grow the account, sustain your business with them, and not have the big company become a liability to your other business. He shares all his information very clearly and simply, but never simplistically. There are even lots of cute pictures of him with a real life elephant to illustrate his points. Yes, they are a tad cutesy. However, they are easily forgivable because of the valuable of the serious information provided.
Sure, he provides a program for landing that important first sale, but he also stresses the importance of matching the right kind of salesperson to that account. He also shows you how to get additional business with other customers within a huge account. And he stresses aspects of working with their internal bureaucracy that less experienced businesses will not know.
For me, the material on how to design your business to properly support a big account is key to your success and a likely area where many businesses slip up in the excitement of landing that first big contract. I also think his discussion of the very real dangers of letting a big account dominate your revenues is spot on.
A very good book on sales for those looking to up their revenues by selling to big companies.
Bag the Elephant!: How to Win and Keep Big Customers.......2007-07-15
Bag the Elephant: How to Win & Keep Big Customers states that all businesses have three potential futures: the snail trail, the arc of the shooting star, and the bag the elephant track. Most businesses follow the snail trail. They put in long hours servicing a large number of small clients always trying to keep one step ahead of bankruptcy.
Some talented entrepreneurs become shooting stars. These individuals find a unique niche that propels their business into instant success. However, since these businesses don't have the foundation to support such growth, they soon find themselves in a game of catch up. Like shooting stars, these businesses usually die a quick death.
A few businesses follow the Bag the Elephant track. These businesses land and keep the big customers whose large orders will carry the business. This strategy not only increases the business short term growth but also assures long term security. Bag the Elephant: How to Win & Keep Big Customers focuses on this final strategy giving step by step instructions, helpful tips, and straightforward ideas on how to not only attract the big customers but how to build a strong foundation to support and keep these big customers.

Great Strategies for Thinking (and handling) Big Customers.......2006-02-25
At just over 200 pages, Bag the Elephant took me a considerable amount of time to actually finish. While the principles are presented quite simply, it's jam packed with tips and strategies that take some time to digest.
The elephant in questions is the large corporate client. The one that brings in the big money. Bag the Elephant walks you through the process of first understanding the elephant, to "Romancing" them and then on to leveraging them for even more gain for you. While focusing primarily on the Big accounts, the principles here can easily be applied to small and medium size accounts, if that is where your target audience is.
Kaplan also dives into common mistakes many people make with their clients and teaches you how to avoid them. I found the fifth mistake most enlightening. Many feel that if they just had that one elephant, then they would be rolling in the dough. But what many forget is that with big elephants come big expenses, and often times, if cards have been misplayed, you'll find profits decreasing rather than increasing after bagging your elephant.
This book is a must read for anybody hoping to hit it big by snagging an elephant of their own. And if you're just a small guy, maybe it's time you start thinking bigger.
Not For Everyone In Sales!!!!!.......2005-10-10
If you sell services to individuals, and do not sell directly to large corporations - this book is not for you!!!!
This book was misrepresented as being for everyone - regardless of the target to which/whom you sell. I soon realized that was little - if anything - in the book that was applicable to the sales of services to individuals. This book caters more to those in need of cutting through the beaurocracy that affects sales to major corporations.
Be careful!
