Book Description

"Few living persons have served the Metropolitan Museum of Art-indeed, the entire world of art and art museums-longer, or with more distinction, than Roy Neuberger. A man of taste, passion, persistence, and generosity, he has shared much of his great private collection with the public, and for generations has supported activities that bring people to museums, and motivate them to return again and again. Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life-and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring."
-Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Equal to his passion for investing is Roy Neuberger's love for art-which he has collected and encouraged for eight decades.

In The Passionate Collector: Eighty Years in the World of Art, you'll follow this fascinating financial figure and great patron of the arts from the streets of 1920s Paris to the museums of New York as he develops the eye of a connoisseur and begins to collect great contemporary art.

Vivid detail puts you in the center of the action as Neuberger collects the brilliant artists of his time-Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper; works with legendary art dealers Paul Rosenberg, Betty Parsons, Sidney Janis, and Leo Castelli; and befriends avid collectors, including the incomparable Duncan Phillips. You'll follow Neuberger as he strives to further the cause of contemporary American artists by exhibiting, lending, and donating from his growing collection, and becoming an activist for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney. You'll also see how the Neuberger Museum of Art was created at the urging of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and how it continues to fascinate art enthusiasts today.

Part personal memoir, part history of art, The Passionate Collector offers a unique view of twentieth-century American art from a man who has lived it.

3 out of 5 stars A Passion for Art.......2005-07-17

Reading this book is like sitting in a room with a very old and rich man to hear him discuss that part of his life devoted to collecting, and later giving away, paintings by fresh and talented American artists. Some of the tales are interesting and some are important only to the old man. On balance your time is well spent. His advice directed to new collectors is especially good. The Conables have done a nice job in helping Mr. Neuberger's informed thoughts on art reach the printed page.

5 out of 5 stars Art and Artists.......2003-07-29

I found The Passionate Collector a wonderful book. As an artist
there was much useful information it it. It's a privilege to add this book to my collection of art books. Anyone interested in American artists of the 20th century must have it.

    3 out of 5 stars An overview.......2006-05-28

I recently did a design project with the late 1800's as my inspiration. I found that because this book covers so many time periods, that it only really gives a brief overview of the time periods. I used other books and came across details that were repetatively seen, yet not included in this book. This book is good in that it does compile all of the time periods into one book and can give the reader a basic idea on what the styles were, but it shouldn't be relied on as an all-encompassing resource.

4 out of 5 stars very handy resource.......2005-08-19

As an artist, I have used this book more than any other for reference. It has gorgeous, detailed illustrations with helpful bylines to explain certain features, as well as models in several directions to give a full idea of how outfits are arranged from all sides. The forms are repetitive--it's a fashion design book, not a photo shoot--but since I don't rely on the model's body types or facial features anyway, I hardly notice. As someone else mentioned, it's an English costume history, so some of the "American" styles are only marginally represented, like flappers, and only upper class styles are included. All in all, however, it's fantastic for ideas and general referencing.

3 out of 5 stars Good source for general readers.......2003-11-27

You don't have to be a costume designer to enjoy this book. It's suitable both for professionals and for laypersons interested in art, costume/social history and drama.

Subtitled "A Complete guide to English Costume Design and History," it is Anglocentric. Names and regnal dates of each monarch (handy for those interested in royal history) appear above line drawings of several "looks" for each period, male and female.

Italic captions draw the eye to noteworthy characteristics, e.g. "embroidered hemline", "wide flared sleeves." Placed alongside the relevant features, they provide an audiovisual aid for increasing style awareness and specialised vocabulary (especially in some of the medieval hair-stylings!).

The book increases your awareness of changing fashions and discrimination of styles within periods. While interesting in its own right, Peacock's book is pleasant to have on the bookshelf, being a good supplementary text for, e.g., History of Art, Drama, and Social History. No doubt there are more complete texts in both breadth and depth, but this is highly visual and usable.

    Recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Teen Designer.......2003-02-19

I have been the costume designer for many of my school's plays, which have ranged from Medieval times to the 1970s to the 1840s in the deep south. And for every single project I have consulted this book. It may not have writing throughout all of it, but I have found that this helps none when you know nothing about the time period. The best thing is to just see how it was all put together. And this book does that wonderfully. I know that when I go off to college, this book will be going with me.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful resource for the SCA.......2000-07-28

This isn't the "all inclusive" book but it does present nice pictures with short essay explainations. I was very tired of reading 5 pages of information to try and visualize what the costume looked like. This book along with a more detailed description was the best tools for my research.

If it's a comic book, then it can't be a work of serious scholarship, right? Wrong. Ilan Stavans, a literary scholar and cultural historian, teams up with Chicano artist Lalo Alcaraz to craft an endlessly entertaining but painstakingly researched history of Latinos--also called Latin Americans and Hispanics, and taking in peoples from all over the Spanish-speaking world--in the United States. Stavans's text covers the ground from avocados to zoot suits, touching on such matters as the Puerto Rican independence movement, the Mexican American War, the Marielito flotilla, and the ongoing struggle for civil rights throughout the hemisphere.

Stavans has great fun, it's clear, twitting received wisdom. He observes, for instance, that Mexico's "Niños Heroes" may be an invention of folklore, and wryly remarks that "nationalism turns egotism into an ideology." Alcaraz has just as much fun, subversively borrowing stock figures such as the toucan (a symbol in much Latin American literature) and the skeleton to serve as a kind of ironic Greek chorus. But author and illustrator also fulfill an earnestly undertaken mission: namely, in Stavans's words, to "represent Hispanic civilization as a fiesta of types, archetypes, and stereotypes" and to tell its story from many points of view. In this they succeed admirably, and Latino U.S.A. is required reading for anyone interested in democratic, inclusive historical writing. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

A carnivalesque yet serious cartoon history of the Latino experience in the U.S.-irreverent, sweeping, political, and very funny.

Latino USA represents the culmination of Ilan Stavans's lifelong determination to meet the challenges of capturing the joys, nuances, and multiple dimensions of Latino culture within the context of the English language. In this cartoon history of Latinos, Stavans seeks to combine the solemnity of so-called "serious literature" and history with the inherently theatrical and humorous nature of the comics. The range of topics includes Columbus, Manifest Destiny, the Alamo, William Carlos Williams, Desi Arnaz, West Side Story, Castro, Guevera, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Neruda, Garca Mrquez, the Mariel Boatlift, and Selena. Stavans represents Hispanic civilization as a fiesta of types, archetypes, and stereotypes. These "clich figurines" include a toucan (displayed regularly in books by Garca Mrquez, Allende, and others), the beloved Latino comedian Cantinflas (known as "the Hispanic Charlie Chaplin"), a masked wrestler, and Captain America. These multiple, at times contradictory voices, each narrating various episodes of Latino history from a unique perspective, combine to create a carnivalesque rhythm, democratic and impartial. For, as Stavans states, "History, of course, is a kaleidoscope where nothing is absolute." Latino USA, like the history it so entertainingly relates, is a dazzling kaleidoscope of irreverence, wit, subversion, anarchy, politics, humanism, celebration, and serious and responsible history.

5 out of 5 stars The Latin struggle told using cartoons.......2007-03-06

The integration of people of Latin descent into the U. S. society is a very complex issue. To start with, while Spanish is a common language among people whose ancestry can be traced to an origin we call Latin, their differences are pronounced. From a cultural perspective, their differences are as great as any found on the European continent. Their history also predates the arrival of European explorers, generally given as 1492. This book chronicles their history and struggle for acceptance into the U. S. society. Told using cartoons, the subject is very serious.
The Europeans conquered and subjugated the cultures native to the western hemisphere, then imported blacks from Africa to do the hard labor when there were not enough Native Americans. Racism and prejudice were rampant for hundreds of years as it was the policy of the United States to dictate the behavior of Latin American governments. It was a major policy change when in 1928 President Herbert Hoover first coined the phrase "Good Neighbor Policy" that was more a change in rhetoric than policy. The United States still militarily intervened in Latin American countries for decades after the statement was made.
All of this is chronicled in this book, written more from the perspective of the Latin rather than the Anglo. However, although it occasionally depicts the Anglo forces as being brutish and stupid, it is not really all that biased. The history of the Latin struggle for rights and opportunity is fraught with incidents of the police and other government and social forces exhibiting prejudice against people of Latin descent. This book is a good and readable introduction to their triumph after centuries of struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and Creative .......2004-08-10

The mezcla of the cartoons of Lalo Alcaraz (of the comic strip La Cucaracha) and the scholarship of Ilan Stavans creates a lively and informative overview of the history of US Latinos, cleverly incorporating traditional Latino theatrical characters and symbols as the storytellers. The book is great fun to read; its format makes it accessible to readers of all ages, and anyone fuzzy about the role Latinos have played in US history and culture during the past 500 years or so should RUSH to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars El Profe Y La Cucaracha.......2003-10-12

Ilan Stavans studies and teaches Latino and Latin American culture and most recently authored Spanglish: The Making Of A New American Language. Lalo Alcaraz reaches the public on a daily basis through his most excellent comic strip La Cucaracha. Together they have joined to take the reader on a trip through Latino USA: A Cartoon History. Biting and sweet, biased and fair, incomplete but thorough, Latino USA is a good way to introduce yourself to the history of the majority minority in the United States. The scholarship is tight and Alcaraz's art makes it go down easy. I can't wait to get my copy into the school library, where I hope some of my not very cosmopolitan anglo students and not as self-aware as they could be latino students get pulled in by the drawings and learn a little history. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars A new way to see..........2000-11-24

Deliciously left wing, and direct and powerful, Ilan Stavans is not afraid to stand and be counted and he knows that you might not like what he has to say. And what he has to say is " Look here. This is good. This is powerful."

He reaches out to inform -- and celebrate the culture-- with authority and panache. He speaks the truth about the oppressed and the oppressor and his book pulls no punches in a direct attack on any hint of a poor Latino self-image. No time for pity here because the time for ascendance is coming.

This book is a necessary shakeup. It's a primer, albeit uneven at times, to folks outside the Latino community and a step in reaching out to those who don't know the truth of their (varied) civilizations.

Rich and potent, this opinionated polemic stands out as a tool to understanding and pride.

    5 out of 5 stars Bien sabroso!.......2000-10-13

Este libro vale su precio. Hace falta buena literatura latina. Los autores hablan sobre temas de la historia que son importantes para nuestra comunidad. Creo que a los adolescentes en especial les gustaran mucho las caricaturas del Sr. Alcaraz. Yo lei el libro de jalon y me quede muy satisfecha.

          Book Description

Renewed interest in Latin American film industries has opened a host of paths of scholarly exploration. Productions from different countries reflect particular social attitudes, political climates and self-conceptions, and must be considered separately and as a whole. The search for national identity is a key component of Latin American films in a time of decreasing cultural diversity and pressures to westernize. Globalization and falling government support have fueled cross-border collaborations, calling into question the idea of a movie's "nationality," and leaving some nations' film industries on the brink of collapse. Whether thriving or barely surviving, struggling to remain distinct or embracing globalization on its own terms, addressing the government or society, Latin American cinema remains vibrant, offering a wealth of material to scholars of all stripes.

These collected essays explore important elements of Latin American cinema and its associated national film industries. The first section of essays examines the impact of modernization on both Latin American screen images and the industry itself, offering modern and historical perspectives. The second section focuses on filmmakers who deal with issues of gender and sexuality, whether sexual transgression, the role of female characters, or societal attitudes towards sex and nudity. The final section of essays discusses the relationship between national identity and Latin American film industries: how movies are used to create a sense of self; Uruguay's ongoing identity crisis; and Brazil's use of Hollywood's stereotypical depiction of the country to depict itself. Photographs and an annotated bibliography accompany each essay, and an index supplements the text.

                    Book Description

Stevenson’s Operations Management surveys the field of operations in both services and manufacturing. As always, this new edition offers complete, balanced, and flexible coverage of operations management. With hands-on examples and support in the text, and the most extensive technology support package available, students will have a practical, deep, up to date, and motivating study resource. Combine that with the clear explanations of topics, and the countless presentation enhancements, this new Eighth Edition is the best ever. Coverage flows from the overall strategic issues of designing products and services and making major capacity and location decisions, through the operating processes and control systems, including well supported quantitative applications. Many specialty topics and quantitative techniques are segmented as supplements that can be highlighted or bypassed depending on your course structure. Topics are also supported with step-by-step examples and solved problems, many including example solutions built into Excel spreadsheets.
