Book Description
Although Peter Hutchinson has been working with land art since the 1960s, he has yet to receive his proper due. His work isn't found in galleries and he doesn’t practice the kind of sensationalism that is typical of the art world. He is a refreshingly modest artist, and his delicate, fleeting work is extraordinarily beautiful, remarkably intelligent, and endlessly charming. It is our hope that Thrown Rope will place Hutchinson where he belongs: in the canon of modern art alongside Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson.
Hutchinson's works are ephemeral and evanescent, produced out in the open, where they are subject to the whims of nature. Much of it is the product of his "thrown rope" method—literally throwing ropes over an expanse of land, then placing lime or planting flowers along the lines deter-mined by the ropes. The result is a snakelike garden or swerving lines of bleached land. Hutchinson has even thrown ropes underwater, planting flowers at the bottom of a lake or stringing oranges or onions beneath the water's surface.
Such projects are just a slice of Hutchinson's many conceptual pieces. The photographs within Thrown Rope are all that exists to document Hutchinson's career. Reproduced here along with Hutchinson's own hand-written notes, they provide an inspirational look at one of the most underappreciated artists of our time.

Thrown Rope.......2006-07-21
Provincetown Arts Press published two books on the occasion of Peter Hutchinson's retrospective at the Provincetown Art Associaion and Museum in 1994: "Narrative Art," the exhibition catalogue with essays by Brian O'Doherty, Ann Wilson Lloyd, and Douglas Huebler, and "Dissolving Clouds," a collection of the artist's writings. In the catalogue introduction, I wrote that the term "Narrative Art" was coined by John Gibson for the title of an exhibition at his gallery in New York in 1974. Hutchinson was one of several artists, including Bill Beckley, Jean Le Gac, and Roger Welch, who were introducing language into aspects of visual art, not merely as another collage element, but as a medium independent of the visual image. Hutchinson's typical practice, then and now, combines image and text emblematically so that the separate mediums interact to make a total statement about art and life. Generally he uses his own photographs and his own written anecdotal descriptions as documentations of an action in a specific time and place that was intended consciously to be a work of art. His texts provide parabolic commentary on the action, but they do not depend on the photographs for their context or their sense of completeness. In this new book, Hutchinson presents his mature self in an elegant summary. The book, beautifully produced, reproduces touchstone images, but they jump to life in their accumulated orchestration.
When Hutchinson throws a rope on a lawn, it is with the purpose of finding an accidental line where he will plant the flowers that materialize into his works of art. The unseen, presented through documentations of its existence, becomes mysteriously animated as an idea greater than the forms that represent it; and what is ultimately called the work of art is an entire cycle of creative process, including destruction, rather than any one of its states, however finished. It seems natural that Hutchinson often works in series and that he incorporates fundamental systems in science and language--cosmic, atomic, chemical, numerical, and alphabetical--while relishing the power of a system to blindly organize random information. Such a rule of system is what makes the Conceptual artist successful in terms that are somewhat strictly defined. From an airplane, on a clear day, any volcano might look beautiful, but knowlegede that Hutchinson has walked the sterile rim and scattered bread--moistening it, and covering it with plastic to grow mold--alters what you see.
Installation / Outstallation All Star!.......2006-03-01
This is a great chronicle of some of the many wonderful works by this cutting edge conceptual artist. Like his work, each page of the book is carefully touched by the genius behind the work. It is beautifully edited and is a great read.
A wonderful art book.......2006-02-23
It's been a long time coming and it looks wonderful.
Princeton Press & Blind Spot have provided a well deserved place in the art book world for Peter Hutchinson and his art.
Lots and lots of beautiful photos chronicles a long career and helps us understand better conceptual art through the wisdom and talent of Peter Hutchinson.
A must-have!

Book Description
Most of us know a wacky chick. She's a true nonconformist, a woman who dares to be different. On any ordinary day she might be found performing a citizen's arrest, running a concession stand at a swingers' convention, or wearing a tiara on top of a cowboy hat. Even when conservatively dressed, wacky chicks give themselves away with their fire and exuberance: their outrageous personalities make them as easy to spot as a flamingo prancing among pigeons.
Once considered a rarity, this wild and wonderful species seems to be increasing its numbers. In Wacky Chicks, irreverent social commentator and humor writer Simon Doonan celebrates this growing phenomenon by introducing readers to a bracing cross section of today's most provocative and unconventional women. He asks them to reveal what it takes to be a wacky chick and how wacky-chickery can help women everywhere find creative fulfillment. Readers will learn everything from wacky-chick spiritualism (woo-woo chicks) to wacky-chick business sense (chicks with shticks). We will witness their lives, habitats, mating rituals, careers, and childbearing practices. There's even priceless advice on fashion, beauty, interior decorating, finding the right partner, and unleashing your feminist wacky chick without losing your femininity.
Some of Doonan's wacky chicks you may already know -- Amy Sedaris, cocktail waitress turned creator and star of Comedy Central's Strangers with Candy, and her alter ego Piglet; Warhol muse and Key lime pie aficionado Brigid Berlin; and Susanne Bartsch, the woman who showed Madonna how to vogue. But most are supervixens you've never met, because, naturally, a wacky chick does not aspire to traditional fame and fortune. Included here are the life lessons of fashion designer turned park ranger Spider Fawke, the proud mother of thirty-eight lizards and a four-inch tarantula; slashed-spandex-wearing Isabel Garrett; hip hypnotist Jessica Porter; and a new age pixie named Kazuko. They are about as diverse a flock as you can imagine, but they share a common theme: all of these women are Belligerent, Resilient, Uninhibited, Naughty, Creative, and Hilarious (B.R.U.N.C.H. for short). In a word, they are wacky.
A book that pays tribute to the wild and unstoppable female in each of us, Wacky Chicks is the ultimate guide to embracing your inner rebel. Mixing intimate and outrageous interview material with philosophical interludes, Simon Doonan brings you on a soul-searching journey that may leave you creating hats out of tinfoil or opening your own hot dog stand, infinitely self-assured and infinitely wacky.

Fun, Flaky, Celebrates the Funk in Us all..........2007-06-21
I love, love, love, love this book.
It is a rally cry for women who have never quite been the norm.
From the woman who wears high heels with her capris and little aprons...to celebrating Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind...(her potato collection - which only I though I noticed...)
I have been a wacky chick my entire life. I've come to accept that I may not be normal, I may just be a little off-kilter. But I am fine with that.
It is great to read a boook that does not focus on women as sexual objects, mate-seeking missles, or dizzy idiots. These are interesting, successful women who live life THEIR WAY!
I have several Wacky Chick friends who will be recieving this book for special days. I cannot wait to enjoy their connection with this fun, fabulous book.
It is all about the Wacky Chick...and her gay best-friend!
The best part of this book is the logic behind each Wacky Chick's style (i.e. wearing an apron keeps your hands free...) I LOVE that...
Thanks for celebrating women!
A great idea that was well excuted but............2007-05-18
I'm a huge fan of Simon Doonan and quite enjoyed the book (particularly the parts about his mother and the wonderful footnotes that he included) but I think that it would have been better minus a few chapters. The women he wrote about were so over the top that after awhile it got a bit wearing and some of them began to grate on my nerves.
It might have been nice as well to see different degrees of wackiness, especially since he was pushing the message about emulating these women and encouraging his readers to release their own wackiness. His examples were so extreme that while they made for entertaining reading, they're not people that most of us could in any way relate to.
My only other complaint is that he urged readers who hadn't done so to rent the movie Auntie Mame which is a good idea but as a writer he should also have mentioned the book (by Patrick Dennis) that the movie was based on.
Don't waste your Time.......2006-08-30
From the other reviews I thought I'd like this book. I can't even finish it (but I'm still trying). I know lots of "Wacky Chicks" but they're not as obscene and crass as the ones written about here. Seems you can only be "wacky" if you fit into the author's category and there we go again.....putting people into boxes.
Honestly, the book was boring and I thought I could have written it better using my own eccentric friends.
Unfortunately, this book with great potential ends up being "skippable".......2006-07-09
While at first glance one would think that this book is a fun pop-culture book destined to one day be a must-read, but ummmm, after a couple chapters where things don't pick up, you realize that this is just a good concept poorly executed by a man who still, even his "certain age", has not come to terms with his gender. I'm not talking about his "orientation" --that is something he seems to be well comfortable with, I am just saying this man is too envious of the women he writes about. It is almost depressing the way this envy is displayed in an otherwise charming book. He always has and always will want to be a wacky woman. And so he wrote a book about a hand full of women who have lead note-worthy and interesting lives. There is good material and research in Doonan's project, and it would make a HOOT of a film! But the book. . . let's say, with a tad bit of regret, is skippable.
Inspirational book for those out there that do not fit in! .......2005-07-10
I live in a small rural area and heard about this book online. Once I requested a copy through my local library and read it through, I realized I needed a copy of my very own. This book is The Bible for those quirky ladies out there who refuse to live by the rules of others, who march to the beat of their own drummer. Once I read it, I didn't feel like I was such an freak, for lack of a better word. If only more people went their own direction, this world would certainly be a more amusing place, let alone more tolerable. I now own this book- and read it quite regularly, as the stories are always refreshing and inspiring...Thank you Simon and ladies!

Pretty good read.......2004-03-04
I liked the book a lot, but when I first got it I hadn't paid attention to the fact that it is a graphic novel. I thought there were just illustrations. I wasn't exactly expecting a comic book. The book is very good, and it does have original endings and doesn't edit itself for a "g" rating, that's true. However, some of the stories seem a little rushed, as if there was just not enough room for more detail since they had so much illustration. It was a quick read and it was good, but I'm kind of glad I didn't buy it.
Interesting and fun.......2002-11-03
Art by Charles Vess and Colleen Doran are the highlights of this book which doesn't cut the gut from the wild old tales of the Brother's Grimm, but some of the art in this book is pretty awful. When you have 60 cartoonists contributing, naturally, quality will vary. It's great, quick reading, though.
A good book of grimm!!.......2002-07-14
When I bought this book I didn't know what to expect. what I found ws a wonderfully illustrated book full of entertaining and yet horrid storys. If you like Grimm or just plain fairy tales this is the book for you! THere are many storys that have hidden morals and some that aren't hidden at all.
Crazy tales that you cant put down........2001-12-03
When I started to read this book I couldnt put it down. The tales that it has were so interesting. Its your favorite fairy tales with a twist. I myself wouldnt read it my children even though it says its for the whole family. One of the best out of the big book series.
The Brothers Grimm At Their Grimmest!.......2000-06-22
Another wonder from Paradox Press! In "The Big Book of Grimm," the old stories of the Brothers Grimm are brought to life. See the parts that Walt Disney left out! These fairy tales aren't for kids!

On page ix of the book it is incorrectly labeled as from Canton kansas. The towers shown are from Pratt Kansas. I lived there almost all of my life two houses down from the towers. It would be nice if Pratt were properly credited. Cantons towers do not look the same.

Excellent for beginners or even old pros!.......2002-05-20
This book has excerpted material also found in Gardner's mammoth "Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic," and the material, as the title suggests, is limited to items performable in an after-dinner setting. This is the sort of magic, when one produces seemingly off-the-cuff miracles, that helped great magicians, such as Alexander Herrmann, Max Malini, Nate Leipzig and Dai Vernon become legends. For if you can do magic any time, anywhere, with anything, then the magic is not in the props, but in YOU!
The most recent person to take advantage of the power of seemingly casual magic is, of course, David Blaine. He has created the illusion that magic happens wherever he goes. And David Blaine is the magician foremost in the public's mind.
Do not be put off by the apparent simplicity of these magic tricks. Done well, at the right moment, they are reputation-makers. Gardner has a knack for finding excellent yet simple material. This simplicity is usually only achieved by rank beginners and hardened professionals. In this book, it can be yours.
Just one thing: show the author the respect he deserves, and rehearse these well and perform them excellently.

Good study supplement.......2007-06-06
I purchased this book as a supplemental study aid for the PHR exam. In addition, I took a course sponsored by SHRM. I found the CD-ROM to be very helpful because it had lots of sample test questions as well as why the answers were either right or wrong. If I didn't know the answer, I would look up the answer while taking the practice tests. I didn't read the whole book but got lots of information just looking up answers. I am usually a stickler for punctuation and grammar mistakes, and honestly didn't find any of the "poor editing" to be as big of an issue as other reviewers have made it out to be. By the way, I passed the PHR exam using the combination of several study tools and methods.
Great learning tool!.......2007-04-02
This book is a great learning tool it gives you the right information that is needed to prepare for the PHR.
My main study source-passed the PHR.......2006-07-16
This was my main study source for the PHR, being that I didn't have $600 to drop on the "Learning System". I passed with a 651 (got about 92% of the questions right).I don't believe there is any one study source that will give you everything you need--but if you spend time with this book, make yourself some flashcards and spend a good couple of months with them before the exam, you'll be 85% of the way there. It's really pretty inclusive.
I'd say get through this book, then take the HRCI practice exam to see what you need to research further. Using ONLY this book, I passed the practice exam with 86% of the questions right. Also, take every practice test you can get your hands on--search SHRM's HRCI message board for a bunch of good links. The tests may include terms/concepts with which you're not familiar and you can research those further.
Speaking of practice tests, I found the ones included in the book and CD-rom helpful--however, the other reviewers are right in that there are quite a few mistakes. One star off for that-might have given it 5 otherwise. However, for the most part they're obvious enough that you'll pick up on them and they're more annoying than likely to confuse you(e.g., question will ask you to identify "the one incorrect choice"; answer guide will say "the one CORRECT choice is...") Too bad more time wasn't spent on proofing instead of including last-minute tacky references to Hurricane Katrina (book was published towards the end of last year).
Good luck to all taking the exam in Dec-Jan--give yourself a good 3 1/2 -4 months to study and YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Great Prep Book.......2006-07-06
The sample test was different than the true prep test, but it prepared you well. The PHR exam was easier than I expected. It was not as theoretical as the book. I would definitely read this book, do all the exercises. Bottom line - you have to study for the exam, at least 40 or 50 hours. My collegues that did not put in the hours did not pass the test... regardless of the study aids.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT IS NOT HELPFUL!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-01
I used this book as my only tool for taking the PHR exam. That was a BIG mistake. This book is horrible. It maybe helped me MISTAKES in the practice test in the book and MANY MISTAKES in the CD_rom with practice test on it. The book also differs from their own CD_rom. There test question are very situational and specific where the actually PHR Exam is more generic and has very few situational questions. The sample test questions in this book and CD_rom are very precise with lots of information so it is easier to decide what the best answer is. The PHR exam is not. I just took the test and I don't' want anyone else to waste their time using this book as a study tool like I did. Look elsewhere for help. Go straight to HRCI and SHRM for your help. This book isn't worth the money. Spend the extra money and go thru HRCI or SHRM.
