Perhaps no one has had a greater influence on gay male fashion than illustrator-cartoonist Tom of Finland. In this volume his unusual and triumphant life story is told in words and pictures. The pictures, of course, steal the show, as Tom's bubble-bottomed macho men fight, love, and punish each other. There's still much to be said about Tom's impact on American and European gay culture, but this book provides a good starting point not only for Tom's fans who want to learn about the man behind the leather-clad images, but also for the uninitiated who've always wondered where the leather-cap-and-chaps look origintated. Sadly, with Tom's death the flow of testosterone-packed pictures has stopped, but volumes like this show that there is still life in his legend.

Book Description

When the definitive history of hte emergence of gay culture in the second half of the twentieth century is written, one individual artist is almost certain to be acknowledged for having singlehandedly shaped the erotic imaginations of generations of gay men: hte Scandinavian illustrator Tom of Finland.Working alone and in secret in a far-off land, the remarkable drawings that sprang from this artist's hands-leatherman-bikers, cowboys, cops, lumberjacks, hardhats, soldiers, and sailors -- become archetypal images that delineated the shape of homoerotic desire. With Tom's full cooperation in the years before his death, F. Valentine Hooven III hs written a full biography of the man, while tracing the evolution and impact of his art on the world.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for any Tom fan.......2006-03-11

A definitive biography of the man and his work, this book is thouroughly engrossing. The pictures reveal all aspects of this leatherman's ideals, and the text offers insights into his life and inspirations.

4 out of 5 stars Who is Tom of Finland?.......2000-05-23

Tom of Finland has become a permanent fixture in gay male popular culture. He is known for the ultramasculine/butch depictions of men in his artwork, perhaps in miltary uniform or in leather. The men's hyper-accentuated masculine bodies have become a paradigm of sorts in gay male culture to emulate...or to clone. TOM OF FINLAND: HIS LIFE AND TIMES is a biography of Tom of Finland the artist. It sheds light on his motivations to draw his men the way he does. It's a quick read, with lots of pictures that show the evolution of the Tom of Finland man. It would have been great to see the pictures in color. This book is a very interesting read for those interested in gay popular culture. It certainly opened my eyes...

4 out of 5 stars An engaging biography of the famous erotic artist.......1998-08-24

This book examines the life and motivations of the famous and well-loved erotic artist; Tom of Finland. With many pictures from Tom's comic strip style early drawings through his evolution as a skilled master of the homoerotic.

      5 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice.......2007-08-15

This book is so helpful... it is advice i am amazed i have lived without. I have a copy of this one and "Does this make me look fat?" Both incredibly valuable. Of course it is for anyone who desires to dress in a classic style. Highly recommended.

      3 out of 5 stars Ageless advice.......2007-01-10

The book was a bit old ie some of the information related to fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. That said, the advice provided on style versus fashion remains relevant at any moment in time.

I bought this book because I liked "Does this make me look fat?" by the same author.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Trend-Proof.......2006-07-15

I am a fan of Feldon's books. I love the interesting fashion "types" in the beginning of her books, for example "Bas Couture." Many of these fashion types are still on streets today. However, the illustrations of pleated pants and mini-skirts (a la Calista Flockhart) are as outdated as the era that the book was written in. Ms. Feldon advocates a classic look, which works for many but can be dull if the wearer doesn't inject personality with accessories, textures or creative use of color. Another drawback is that it doesn't cover dressing for your body shape. For that, you will have to purchase her other book, "Does This Make Me Look Fat?" If you overlook these drawbacks, this book is a fun read and a great way to put together a good look on a budget.

4 out of 5 stars Truly helpful, but ..........2001-11-07

Feldon's book will help you to organize your wardrobe and make wiser fashion purchases, but much of her advice is predicated on two assumptions: that everyone looks good in black (not true and boring besides!)and that everyone should/wants to dress like Audrey Hepburn.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2001-08-28

Love that this book is finally available in paperback. It was written a few years ago, but all the advice and tips really hold up. A classic---deserves to be in print forever! Contains totally useful information delivered in the same fun witty style as "Does This Make Me Look Fat?"---Feldon's latest book, which was featured on Oprah. Really helps you zero in on a personal style and get your wardrobe together. Highly recommended. I already own the hard cover, now I think I'll get a few of these for x'mas gifts!

2 out of 5 stars How to save $$$ while having a large family and living the "righteous" life........2006-02-26

I mistakenly got this book from the library because I was interested in another book with a similar title. I must say I was taken aback by the religious mentions on almost every page. This book showed a frugal way to shop through thrift stores, garage sales, etc. That is not a bad thing but the presentation was all wrong. There was one part describing a mother and 10-year old girl shopping for shoes that just depressed me. It was so bent on finding the "sensible" shoes that the enjoyment of finding a great deal was sucked out. In another part of the book some woman was chastised for working part time when the "mending" was piling up. That silly little job cost her more money in the long run because she just wasn't doing the "right" thing as a mother and wife. That was it for me. What a waste of paper.

1 out of 5 stars Odd religous overtones.......2005-06-02

I picked up the book thinking it might give me some practical advice. Which it did: buy what you look good in not what's trendy, hunt for bargains, etc. Nothing earthshattering but okay advice. What I found bizarre and offensive however was the frequent references to God and Christianity. It was not billed as a "Christian's Guide to Shopping" yet it had passages that instructed women to "cover their bosoms" "as Christians" need to be modest. Is this necessary? I found it offensive and off putting.

        3 out of 5 stars Turned off..........2004-09-15

To be completely honest, I've not gotten past the third chapter yet. So to be fair, I will leave 3 stars. After about the 8th page, it occurred to me that references to "church", the "bible" and "God" were appearing with unusual regularity. By the second chapter, these words/references were showing up on virtually every single page. Now, I'm pretty open-minded and feel that individuals are entitled to express their beliefs as they see fit; that being said, a fashion guide book isn't exactly the most appropriate arena for that expression. Some may not be phased by this...but it kinda freaked me out. Just something to be aware of...

3 out of 5 stars Not for those who like to chicly update their wardrobes........2003-12-21

This is a very nice, well-written book, but I think the title is misleading. I pride myself on looking chic and up-to-date, despite living in a bland, cold-climate midwest city and being a mother of 4. Years ago, when my husband and I were starting out, this would have been more valuable. Then, I would have shopped at the Salvation Army. Now, I try to track down the items that will make the most impact with my regular basics, and I try to find everything at the best price possible. Finding Pendleton wool slacks, a Talbots sweater and an Ann Taylor t-shirt for 50 cents each sounds like good advice for budget-conscious 55+ year olds, but I'll stick to the advice found in books similar the new Lucky Manual of Shopping as well as common sense I've learned over the years. But this is good advice for those just starting out, those with large families on a shoestring budget and for those who look for good quality clothes to last many years, and are not necessarily too concerned with fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Making the most out of a personal clothing budget.......2003-08-11

Collaboratively written by JoAnn Janssen and Gwen Ellis, Dress Like A Million Bucks Without Spending It! is a practical and economic guide of making the most out of a personal clothing budget. Tips for shopping, organizing, accentuating the positive, keeping an eye out for quality, learning how to sew buttons or fix split seams, passing shoestring budget ways on to the children, and more are all covered in this superbly organized, "user friendly", and highly recommended primer.

He already owned Vol.1 and Vol.2 and stated that the artist's technique and style development was clearly visible as one progresses through the volumes 1-4. Great "study" books for any animation artist.

This book is an absolute must for those seeking to find a gift for the ones who have everything. To be well appreciated, one must have a sense of humor. This book is informative, fun, and gives the reader a wee bit to think about while doing their business. It is also the ideal book to read on airplanes because of the ease with which one becomes absorbed in the articles. Airplanes are not the easiest places to read, as you well may know. All in all, it is an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Definitely better than Reader's Digest........1999-06-13

I love this book. At first, I just read it on the john. Now, I read it whenever I'm bored! By the way, people used to call the 'John' the 'Jake' in the mid 1500's. That transitioned to 'Cousin John' which later shortened to just 'John'. 5 out of 5 stars Take your seat, sit back, relax, and enjoy!!!.......1999-03-16

For the man/woman who has "everything", who couldn't use an easy-to-read, easy-to-pick-up, easy-to-put-down compendium of fun and fast paced antecdotes, amusing stories, and interesting(and generally useless) facts??? This book has brought me considerable entertainment and a few out right belly laughs during my past visits to the throne. Well worth the investment. It doesn't cost too much, and the time you spend is "free time" anyway!!

5 out of 5 stars It was a great experience. I was pooped when I was done!.......1998-12-22

Very good and entertaining book. You will not want for variety in the "reading room". I have actually taken it to bed a few times because the text is very unique and diverse. I'm no Einstein but I know a lot of trivia and this has kept me on the edge of my seat, (don't go there...) If you add it to your collection, it will become a worn cover favorite.

                  Book Description

Since the earliest days of the movies more than a century ago, moviemakers have been intrigued by "the greatest story ever told." They have tried, with varying degrees of success, to capture the life of Jesus on film.

In Jesus at the Movies Barnes Tatum has created a fascinating and exhaustively-researched viewer's guide to the movies about Jesus. Tatum guides the reader film-by-film from Sidney Olcott's silent classic "From the Manger to the Cross" through Denis Arcand's award-winning "Jesus of Montreal" to the future of Jesus movies. With his experience as author, biblical scholar, and teacher on religion and film, he presents this unique look at Jesus films in all dimensions: as cinematic art, as literature, as biblical history and as theology.

5 out of 5 stars A comparison of plot dynamics in different films.......2002-08-09

Jesus At The Movies: A Guide To The First Hundred Years by W. Barnes Tatum is a comprehensive guide to virtually all the major Hollywood films made about Jesus Christ to date. The films range from such silent era epics as Sidney Olcott's From The Manger To The Cross and D.W. Griffith's Intolerance, to Norman Jewison's Jesus Christ Superstar and David Greene's Godspell. From the seven last sayings attributed to Christ on the cross, to the story of Jesus from a Judaic as well as Christian perspective, to a comparison of plot dynamics in different films, Jesus At The Movies is a thoroughly researched, heavily annotated, broad-ranging and exhaustive guide, analysis, and review. Enhanced with a selected bibliography, filmography, and an index, Jesus At The Movies is a seminal, invaluable reference work for students of film history in general, and the movie representations of the story and person of Jesus Christ in particular.

4 out of 5 stars The film Jesus explored.......2000-10-25

A fascinating look at how Jesus has been portrayed in the movies. I have seen (and own) several of the movies reviewed. I didn't figure I needed another "Jesus flick". However, the discussion on several of these films has caused me to go looking for them. The changes in how (and who gets to) portray Jesus over the years is intriguing - and it is easy enough to read that I wasn't intimidated. I plan on using this book as a starting point in a Lenten discussion where we will watch several of these films.

                  5 out of 5 stars No-nonsense career guide.......2002-05-12

Ellen Highstein, longtime director of Concert Artists' Guild and now head of the summer study programs at Tanglewood, offers a concisely written, comprehensive career guide for the aspiring classical musician. Culled from and in part overlapping with material covered at CAGs live career workshops, there is much useful advice offered on everything from creating the best publicity materials, to making phone contacts, to finding venues in which to perform, to obtaining management. Highstein's remarks are backed up with authority as well as plenty of real-life anecdotes. She cannot disguise the fact that the career picture for classical music these days is essentially bleak--however, she offers the best practical tools for the artist who nevertheless wishes to make a go of it. This third edition is somewhat expanded but essentially unchanged from previous incarnations. The only drawback is that, dating from 1997, not enough is made of the rapidly expanding role of the Internet and various software in promoting oneself and one's material.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but lacking depth.......2000-06-24

While this book provides a comprehensive listing of what needs to be taken care of if you want to perform professionally as a classical artist, it does not go beyond the bullet-type mentality. It is nonetheless useful as a planner guide and a reminder that no aspect should be overlooked to achieve success. While not fulfulling all my expectations, it has the practical use of keeping one in focus towards one's dream.

2 out of 5 stars Not much here for mystery puzzle fans.......2007-05-05

Like its predecessor Clue Mysteries: 15 Whodunits to Solve in Minutes, this book suffers from mysteries that don't work as puzzles, and aren't of much interest in any other way. In most of the 15 stories, "who done it?" is obvious, as much of the story is about the killer's motive. In others, the solution is entirely arbitrary, and any of the other characters could just as easily have been declared the culprit. The humorous aspects of the stories had already started to fall flat for me before I'd finished the first volume. I guess I shouldn't have ordered both at the same time!

The "commanding heights," according to Pulitzer Prize-winner Daniel Yergin and international business advisor Joseph Stanislaw, are those dominant enterprises and industries that form the high economic ground in nations around the globe. In their analysis of the new world economy, The Commanding Heights: The Battle Between Government and the Marketplace That Is Remaking the Modern World, they examine "the individuals, the ideas, the conflicts, and the turning points" that are responsible. And by considering events such as the ongoing Asian monetary crisis, they suggest what the ultimate interconnection of financial markets might mean in the future.

The Commanding Heights is about the most powerful political and economic force in the world today -- the epic struggle between government and the marketplace that has, over the last twenty years, turned the world upside down and dramatically transformed our lives. Now, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Prize joins with a leading expert on the new marketplace to explain the revolution in ideas that is reshaping the modern world. Written with the same sweeping narrative power that made The Prize an enormous success, The Commanding Heights provides the historical perspective, the global vision, and the insight to help us understand the tumult of the past half century. Trillions of dollars in assets and fundamental political power are changing hands as free markets wrest control from government of the "commanding heights" -- the dominant businesses and industries of the world economy. Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw demonstrate that words like "privatization" and "deregulation" are inadequate to describe the enormous upheaval that is unfolding before our eyes. Along with the creation of vast new wealth, the map of the global economy is being redrawn. Indeed, the very structure of society is changing. New markets and new opportunities have brought great new risks as well. How has all this come about? Who are the major figures behind it? How does it affect our lives? The collapse of the Soviet Union, the awesome rise of China, the awakening of India, economic revival in Latin America, the march toward the European Union -- all are a part of this political and economic revolution. Fiscal realities and financial markets are relentlessly propelling deregulation; achieving a new balance between government and marketplace will be the major political challenge in the coming years. Looking back, the authors describe how the old balance was overturned, and by whom. Looking forward, they explore these questions: Will the new balance prevail?

5 out of 5 stars Capitalism won. Socialism lost........2007-08-13

That's the central message of this book. But to know why it happened, how it happened, and the geographic extent of this outcome, you need to read this fascinating book.

Now if we can just get our own federal government to realize this . . .

4 out of 5 stars Good Primer But Authors Show Shallow Understanding.......2007-06-19

This book offers a good historical review of the struggle between free market and government controlled, socialist economies, the ideas behind the struggle, the main characters and the intellectuals who shaped the struggle.
Nevertheless, the book makes it look like market controlled economies have achieved the ultimate triumph when the case is far from that. The so called 'capitalist' economies of today are more controlled by government that they ever were and they have been rather re-regulated than deregulated.
The book would make a good reading for those interested in history but I wouldn't subscribe too much to its premise that Capitalism has triumphed.

2 out of 5 stars Not critical enough; offers one perspective and does not back it up.......2006-11-18

This book was rather fun to read but I am not convinced that the authors have as deep an understanding of the phenomena they are writing about as they would like the readers to believe. The book reads like a narrative, full of assertions that are not backed by rigorous analysis of hard evidence. The authors do not critically explore causal relationships, nor do they talk about research that has done so. They present only one particular perspective on the unfolding of events, and they do not defend this perspective against potential criticism.

My experience with economics has always reinforced the idea that causality can be difficult to establish, and can often operate in unexpected ways. An economist must proceed skeptically, being careful to explore alternative explanations and being prepared to defend assertions with theory and data. The authors do not seem to share this view, taking instead a more naive approach.

Maybe I was expecting too much; after all this book is meant to be accessible to non-economists. However, making a book more accessible does not necessitate a lack of rigour or the absence of critical thought; the authors could have removed some of the redundancy in the book (their writing is far from concise!) and replaced it with explorations of alternative perspectives. The book would be greatly enriched by adding more discussion of research that supports (or opposes) their views.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Review of 20th century political economy.......2006-11-07

This is as painless an education on world 20th century political economy as possible. It is very interesting, providing a lot of good intellectual background to the major events and excellent descriptions of the events themselves. The book places excessive emphasis on Hayek, who was an important figure representing a strong "pro-market" voice in economics, but probably less important than Friedman and no more important than several others. The "conflict" bewteen Hayek and Keynes is somewhat overstated. However, this is an excellent book and the corresponding DVD is also very good.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent report of the world economy.......2006-02-13

Public sector economy or market economy, this is the epic quest of the twentieth century. In a time of unemployment and global markets, everyone is looking for an answer to get growth and employment high. Daniel Yergin examines the twentieth century under the aspects of political and economic point of views.
He begins with the New Deal; in witch Roosevelt tried to regulate the liberal free market. The Anti-Trust- Rules were the first step in a modern regulated market. A neoliberal market constitution was introduced by the German economists. Walter Eucken, Mueller-Armack and Roepke were the person who introduced the „Ordoliberalismus"(Freiburg school of economists) into the economic policy. Yergin and Stanislaw discussed the transformation of the socialist states from a socialist market condition into a free market, after the Soviet Union broke down. These new economies of the Warsaw Pact states troubled with the release into the capitalist world. They showed how these transformation works, especially in Poland. Against this transformation they show how the Old Europe had problems with the expansion of the market into the east. In Western Europe the unemployment rate rose to an unknown high and the social problems of the welfare system rose too.
Yergin and Stanislaw explained the economic policy of Margaret Thatcher and the third way of Tony Blair and Gerhard Schroeder.
Beyond this political point of views Yergin and Stanislaw explains the theoretical background of the modern economics. The Chicago school by Milton Friedman, Alfred Kahn economic of regulation and Keynesianism is discussed.
The future lies in the Asian markets and the growing Indian market. They explain the population problems of these countries and how the World Bank gets further with it.
I think it is an excellent book for the economist. It shows how the theoretical background is applied. There are good examples to explain it to the reader who are not familiar with the economic thinking.
