The author provides some very innovative arguments in regard to musical expression, which seem to stretch the much debated issue of audience emotion into aesthetics of music.

    Book Description

From togas to tailcoats: the evolution of style from antiquity to 1888 Originally published in France between 1876 and 1888, Auguste Racinet's Le Costume historique was the most wide-ranging and intelligent study of clothing ever published. Covering the world history of costume, dress, and style from antiquity through the end of the 19th century, the great work—"consolidated"in 1888 into 6 volumes containing nearly 500 plates — remains, to this day, completely unique in its scope and detail.Racinet's organization by culture and subject has been preserved in TASCHEN's magnificent and complete reprint, as have excerpts from his delightful descriptions and often witty comments. Perusing these beautifully detailed and exquisitely colored illustrations, you'll discover everything from the garb of ancient Etruscans to traditional Eskimo attire to 19th century French women's couture.

Though Racinet's study spans the globe from ancient times through his own, his focus is on European clothing from the Middle Ages to the 1880s and this subject is treated with exceeding passion and attention to detail. The Complete Costume History is an absolutely invaluable reference for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians; it is also an immensely fascinating and inspirational book for anyone with an interest in clothing and style.

3 out of 5 stars Complete Costume History .......2007-05-10

Wonderful pictures and ideas flow from every page.

For a person seeking a picture book... BEWARE!! This book will not only give you visual clue to the era in question but adds a bit of reading into the concepts and timing of a particular costume you seek to research. This book is heavy and well worth the additional weight it contributes to your collections.

For a person seeking a more in depth concept of a certain period's costumes and accessories...this is a book that will help.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent example of illustrations from a specific time.......2007-04-20

I just received this book for my birthday, I'd been wanting it for quite a while. When I first saw it, I knew it wasn't a reference book, and am surprised other reviewers thought it would be. For one thing it was written in 1896. Consider the world view at that time - very Eurocentric, very Western Civilization oriented. So that is what you get. However, you also get an example of illustrations and drawings that you just don't see now a days. Its quite lovely really, and is indeed useful when I am reading a historical novel and want a visual. So buy this for what it is, not what you think it is.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!.......2007-01-09

It's a fantastic history of the costumes. Racinet told us the meaning of live in all the sicles, with clothes, shoes, jewels, and everytthing that the people dressed in that days. It's my best buy in the last year! If you will working with fashion, art, history, or you are a person who want to say more about the life in the past, you must be see this book!

    3 out of 5 stars Impressive size.......2006-02-22

I was very impressed by the size of the book... never seen anything like this before. The content, however, is not that impressive. There are lots of good illustrations, copies from paintings, detailed drawings of selective accessories and furniture, but this is not a complete overview (but you would expect it to be full from such an edition, wouldn't you?). Confusing are the descriptions on each page: timeframes are too foggy and there is no description of each drawing, but those few available you often do not know which drawing to apply to.
The most interesting are the sections of folk and national dresses.
The book is more suitable for the coffee table (make sure you have a big one)to impress your guests than as a serious reference. Though I have used it a lot, I wish it was more complete

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-08-14

A sumptuously beautiful book that I first discovered at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts bookstore (and what a bookstore it is). It is well worth the price, particularly the one offered here on Amazon, but I would have willing paid much more. The illustrations are breathtakingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Such a beautiful and interesting book.......2004-06-17

This is the ultimate coffee table book. It is so elegant. Full of interesting picture. I am not even very interested in costumes and fashion but this is such a beautful book. It will delight any guest who sees it on your coffee table.

    3 out of 5 stars Azzarello's weakest Hellblazer offering........2006-08-15

Brian Azzarello, John Constantine, Hellblazer: Hard Time (Vertigo, 2001)

Brian Azzarello's forays into the world of John Constantine are always fun, and this one is no exception. Hard Time opens with Constantine being sentenced to a very long time in prison. Being Constantine, of course, he makes fast friends and works his way up the food chain. Faced with a type of authority he can't con, ignore, or simply make go away makes him not a happy camper, though, and the results are disastrous...

This is not your mama's Hellblazer. It almost seems like a story idea from another series that Azzarello didn't know what to do with, so he ended up using it for Hellblazer. This is not necessarily a bad thing; whatever Azzarello writes is generally going to be worth reading, and it certainly fits Constantine's character to get himself into this sort of mess. Still, there's something not quite right about it, as if it's a puzzle piece an one of the edges had been chewed off.

Likable, but not quite right, if you get my meaning. ** ½

5 out of 5 stars "The devil come to Hell...".......2006-07-13

100 Bullets creator Brian Azzarello set a landmark when he became the first American writer to work regularly on Hellblazer, and Hard Time, his first, and best, arc during his run on the series, remains one of the best Hellblazer stories available. As the TPB begins, our favorite hard drinking, chain smoking, cynical magus finds himself in America, and sentenced to 35 years in prison for murder. As John Constantine meets all the players and big names of this hell, he must rely on his wits and abilities to stay alive, sane, and become the master of his new domain. Azzarello's storytelling is sharp and it's made all the better by superb art by the legendary Richard Corben, whom it's always a treat to see work from. All in all, if you're looking for a great Hellblazer story, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Azzarello's run.......2005-04-14

This was the strongest arc in Azzarello's run. My overall problem with Azzarello's run was not that it was set in America but that the magical elements of the series receded into the background for most of it. This is an excellent story and well worth reading, as is most of Azzarello's run--IF you have the extra money. After this arc though, Marcelo Frusin comes on and I wish that two or three of the stories had used fill in artists.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but cliched.......2001-02-11

I started collecting Hellblazer TPB's mostly to complete my Garth Ennis collection, but the character of John Constantine got me hooked. Unfortunately I missed some of the arcs by past writers, but I slipped into the current Azzarello run pretty easily with this paperback.

"Hard Time" is a pretty fun story. The whole prison motif intrigued me when I first heard about it, and I really enjoyed seeing the hardcore Constantine deal with it. Azzarello handles the story pretty well, and although it's far too early to judge his handling of the main character, "Hard Time" remains a good read.

Some of the story elements, though, seemed a tad cliched. The whole story seemed like an episode of Oz. I wasn't sure if he was paying homage or blatantly stealing.

Those who're already fans of the series and missed this arc should pick it up, but if you're new to Hellblazer, start off with "Original Sins". It's a great way to be introduced to the series.

5 out of 5 stars A Rake at the Gates of Hell.......2000-11-18

Brilliant crime-author Brian Azzarello has done the unthinkable. He's taken John Constantine past where even Garth Ennis had darred. Azzarrello, once attacked for being and American on what was a very English book, showed us that of all the demons and monsters that a magic man like John Constantine has to face, the scarriest buggers out there are still just humans. In prison for murder, on his own, haunted by the ghosts of his past, John must work his way through the 'system' at place, and in pure Constantine fashion, bring it all down around his head. The art could be better, but the writing is some of the best graphic-fiction to come out in years.

I first read this book while riding the bus to work and laughed so hard and long people were looking at me. I saw a lot of myself and my family in this book. I'd give it 5 stars if it were just a little longer.

5 out of 5 stars TOOOO FUNNY, TOOOO TRUE!!!.......2000-09-15

ooooh, I laughed so hard at this book! It makes you remember things you probably long forgot or just chose to block out of your mind. Whatta hoot! I think my favorite one was the one about the woman with the halter top on and her stomach hanging out thinking that she is da domb! I seen this lady in a resturant just the other day! I couldn't stop laughing thinking about her and this book. Don't get all deep with this book, it's meant to be lighthearted and funny, not a jab at black folk! Read it for what is was meant to be...hella funny!!

    1 out of 5 stars H O R R I B L E ! ! ! !.......2000-04-25

I can't believe this book was written by two people with doctorates. There were a couple of dry, "ha ha's" here and there, but nothing to write home about. I think I would have laughed my backside off if I had read this book back in the late 70's or early 80's.

I know you can't take this book seriously, and it is meant for pure entertainment, but this book struck me as being downright stupid. Some things are listed as being "ghetto" when it is actually based on economics. For example, #48 states, "You've ever used a coat as a blanket." This does not mean you're ghetto, it could mean you may have been poor at some point, or you've been in a situation where blankets were not available (i.e. waiting in an airport for a flight that has been delayed for 24 hours).

The authors consider you ghetto if you still eat at Denny's (see #129).

According to the authors you're also ghetto if, "You go to a beauty salon for a press and curl." (This is #89). I think a better ghetto point would have been if you still have your hair pressed and curled in your mother's kitchen.

Other items which are seen as ghetto are: #89:"You've called a radio station for anything." #345: "Any of the following is your favorite car: BMW, Caddy, Gremlin, Hornet, Jeep Cherokee, Lincoln, Maxima, Nissan, Pacer, Pinto." #375: "You were the only black person at your wedding."

I could go on, but I will stop here. This book was a TOTAL waste of my money.

5 out of 5 stars Could not stop laughing at myself and my family.......1999-07-29

This is a book that transcends culture, class, race, and ethnicity. I don't think there is one person in America that did not see themselves in at least five of the descriptions in this book. I had everyone in my family read this book and circle in red the passages that described them. When I was done there were only about ten that had not been circled!!! Berry outdid herself it was great to laugh at myself, which we as Black people need to do a little more of. The book was in a way very therapeutic.

    5 out of 5 stars DAMN: EVERYBODY'S GOT A LITTLE GHETTO FLAVOR!!!.......1999-06-20

Dr. Berry will even have your saddity Aunt Geraldine nodding and laughing in agreement to half of the descriptions in this book. Some of them are enough to make you fall out from laughter, crawl under a table in shame or cry tears of sympathy for those who are too ghetto for their own good. If you ain't got at least 10 of these traits, you're in denial, lying or both!!! ADMIT IT: WE'S ALL GHETTO Y'ALL!!!

      Book Description

For more than sixty years, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans personified the romantic, mythic West that Americans cherished. Raymond E. White presents these two celebrities in the most comprehensive and inclusive account to date. Part narrative, part reference, this impeccably researched, highly accessible survey spans the entire scope of Rogers's and Evans's careers and highlights their place in twentieth-century American popular culture. In a dual biography, he shows how Rogers and Evans carefully husbanded their public image and-of particular note-incorporated their Christian faith into their performances. Testifying to both the breadth and the longevity of their careers, the book includes radio logs, discographies, filmographies, and comicographies that will delight historians and collectors alike.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding biography and reference on these two popular culture figures.......2005-12-03

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' fans and students of popular culture will appreciate especially the voluminous and what must be virtually definitive references and documentation on the more than sixty-year career of the cowboy couple. Although some of the material goes back to before they met and became married. The eleven appendices begin on page 117 and run through the start of the notes on page 485. In addition to the filmography and discography of each noted in the review's heading, the appendices contain material on each's radio and television appearances, song compositions, appearances in comic books, inspirational books by either one or both (many written with a coauthor), and a "log" of more than 275 "A Date with Dale" radio programs between 1984 and 2000 noting location, topic, song, and guest; these were 30-minute "spiritual talk shows" hosted by Dale Evans. The biography preceding the appendices goes over the success of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in the different areas of popular entertainment while also devoting chapters on them as symbols of the mythic American West while being at the same time exemplars of the wholesome family life which was a prime social ideal in the post-WWII years from the late 1940s to the early '60s when they were at the height of their popularity.

4 out of 5 stars CUTE CUTE CUTE critters.......2004-02-27

Not content to make only jewelry from beads? Want to start your own bead zoo? Or sprinkle your garden with bead insects? Or plant your garden with bead vegetables and flowers? This book is chockablock full of cute little critters, zodiac signs, itty-bitty purses for your dollies, and space ships for a beaded trip to the stars.

Although the diagrams call for Toho seed beads, a Girl Scout troop project might try using big pony beads instead for a larger and less-painstaking result.

4 out of 5 stars Great designs-buy it if you love bead art.......2001-03-20

I bought this book because it is the best among the other bead art books. I actually discovered this book from the library and decided to borrow it and eventually purchased it online. Some designs are easy to do but those 3-d designs are quite complicated.Overall, i gave it 4 stars because i managed to create some really nice accessories for a first-timer like myself and the designs are more unique that normal bead art books. Recommended for those who are really into bead art and must be very patient cos it is time consuming!

5 out of 5 stars Another Ondori Hit!.......2000-06-14

This great Ondori published book includes more patterns than you could possibly make in a month of Sundays. There are both "flat" designs and 3-D designs. Some favorites from this book are: the Thumbelina pages (13 patterns), the Bees, Bugs and Butterflies pages (7 patterns) and The Zoo Pages (13 patterns). In addition, there are 3 pages of patterns for simple neclaces, earrings, and hair decorations. The directions are well-written and easy to follow.

              5 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2007-08-15

Reading this book was well worth my time. The authors present academic concepts in plain english. They did a great job of shifting my training mindset from a focus on content to a focus on learning. They gave me many practical strategies for improving my trainings.

4 out of 5 stars Best purchase for training EVER............2007-04-05

There are so many "how to train" products out there and most are so academic so as not to be practical. This book is easily understandable, fun and most of all, practical. I have already incorporated most of what I've read and have seen dramatic improvement in our new employees' performance. Reading this book was as comfortable as talking with a friend over coffee, very informal and very fun! Thank you!

              5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2007-01-23

5 out of 5 stars Telling Ain't Training - great tool for trainers.......2007-01-18

This book is a great tool for trainers. Not only does the book explain the dynamics of adult learning and training approaches, it provides 25 learning activities to help keep your programs interesting, fun, and productive. This met all of my expectations.

              5 out of 5 stars I've never read a more interactive book!.......2006-02-25

I have read a lot of books recently to increase my work knowledge, and I have to say that this book was the easiest and most fun to read. The writers have done an excellent job getting the reader involved, which increases the amount of information one is able to remember. This book is a real pionner in how to write educative books. Oh, yea, and the content was outstanding!
