Book Description
In the fourth installment of the Words To Live By series, Mary Engelbreit turns her attention to teacher - those who teach inside the classrom and out. The result is sure to win high marks from educators and the rest of her fans. Strong memories of her own early school days coupled with a deep respect for the work teachers do every day has made teachers (and school children too, of course) frequent subjects of Mary's artwork. "I guess it's my little way of showing appreciation for a severly under-appreciated group," she says. As in the other Words To Live By books, Mary's artwork is presented alongside inspirational quote from famous writers, artists, scholars, statesmen, and students - this time with words that pay tribute to the practioners of this most noble profession. Teachers love Mary Engelbreit, and this book shows that the feeling is mutual.

Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
The BEST FBFW book out there!.......2004-05-08
April was the little surprise that invigorated the series! She continues to be a main stay even when the story line goes to Michael, but this book was excellent.
Excellent!.......2002-06-18
40 years old, married, two kids, one job outside and one at home (make it 4 or 5...), one dog,.... and a new kid in April. great book from a great writer.
Johnston provides us with laughs and tears over the years.......2002-04-22
Johnston, having written for what seems to be a lifetime already, continues the story of the loveable "For Better or For Worse" family that many countries have come to love and treasure. One of the only 'real' families in comics, Johnston cleverly and eloquently mixes pain and laughter --- succinctly paraphrasing much of life.
"What, Me Pregnant?" is another chapter of the "For Better or For Worse" saga, with Elly finding herself pregnant... at 40! Her other kids in high school and preparing to go to college, this is unexpected and delightful for the fans of the series. This book tracks Elly's pregnancy and continues the personal tales of the other family members as they grow up -- and grow older. A wonderful book that will have you glued to the pages until the end.
Nice........1999-03-10
I enjoyed reading the book
Book Description
What! Your Pregnant Again! Bite me! Just by the title alone you can most certainly get the feel of my intentions of this book. If you have had a miscarriage or have experienced infertility you know it is not an easy subject to discuss. This book pretty much says it all, even the feelings that are kept under wraps so to speak. You know the frustration, the jealousy, the rage, all these emotions that are all too often overlooked. You need to express them, and if you can't then read this book. You will realize you are not alone, not only that but after reading this book and finding out how the dealt with these issues I can almost guarantee your going to feel good about yourself, however you may be quite hungry too. Okay you have to read the book to know what I'm talking about, so buy it, read it, and know there is hope, and if that doesn't help then go shopping. (works for me)

Entertaining yet heart tugging account.......2006-09-12
This is a poignant memoir of a young woman's struggle with infertility, told in diary form with blunt, naked honesty. A must read for anyone going through the anguish of this all too common problem.

Best known as Detective John Munch on the hit TV series Homicide, Richard Belzer is also an accomplished standup comedian with a knack for political commentary in the tradition of Mort Sahl and Dick Gregory. In UFOs, JFK, and Elvis, he applies his analytic powers to two of the most controversial topics of the late 20th century: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the alleged U.S. government cover-up of the existence of alien life. (The reference in the title is the book's only substantial Elvis sighting.)
Belzer sensibly avoids pretending to have the answers, opting instead to focus on the questions themselves. Why does the Zapruder film fail to synchronize with other footage of the Kennedy shooting? What's the real background on Lee Harvey Oswald--and who really posed for that famous backyard photo? Did NASA regularly suppress UFO sightings by Apollo and Gemini astronauts? And how about that giant face on the surface of Mars? While Belzer's sarcastic, antiauthoritarian tone may not convince you that aliens walk among us, it's rather difficult by book's end to fully dismiss his belief that "history is just a collection of accepted lies" told to keep the masses in line. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
"I'm not asking you to believe every conspiracy theory you'll find in this book. . . . I didn't write this book to give you all the answers. The Warren Commission did that, and the answers were all wrong. I wrote this book to inspire you to do what the powers that be wish you wouldn't: to question authority . . . and to keep an eye out for Elvis."
--RICHARD BELZER
In UFOs, JFK, and Elvis, the distinguished statesman of stand-up comedy tackles some of the biggest conspiracies and cover-ups this side of Roswell. Just what is it that they don't want you to know about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Area 51, and what the American astronauts really found on the moon? The unexplained crash at Roswell and the mysterious "face" on Mars? The link between the Nazis and the U.S. space program? Evidence of extraterrestrial experimentation?
Finally, one lone "nut" exposes the conspiracy to keep conspiracies a dirty little secret, standing up to the shadowy forces that would have us believe that Oswald acted alone, those lights in the sky are weather balloons, and fluoridated water is good for you (yeah, right). "Some of the smartest people I know . . . find it easier--and certainly more comforting--to believe that America is the only country on earth with no conspiracies at all." Just remember: do not ask on whom The Belz has told--he's told on them.

Read it to enjoy Belzer, get your info elsewhere.......2007-09-29
I don't give a care about whether or not Elvis abducted JFK, this was just a fun book to read. Belzer is actually more enjoyable as an author than he is as a stand-up, which is odd considering that you're picturing his delivery the whole time you're reading it.
It's a quick read. Environmentalist might be upset that there's a lot of blank space (for your own notes I'm sure). Also, he has tangent boxes throughout even though each chapter is only about 3 pages long. Those who feel that tangent boxes are designed to make it feel like you're taking a break might instead feel like they're trying to read two books at the same time.
Belzer's UFOs.......2007-03-13
It's hard to believe that this book is meant to be taken seriously even though the author might be a conspiracy buff. The conspiracies range from the ridicilous to the completely absurd. Some conpiracies are even contradictory, USA faked all Moon missions or Neil Armstrong encountered a moon full of aliens and their structures. The book offers a lot of opinions and wild stories presented as fact without any proof. Belzer's fellow "conspiracy researcher" Jim Marrses theories presented in the book are the most absurd. The Moon is a spaceship built by aliens because it couldn't have formed any other way and its gravity is too weak to hold it together. Sounds really good, if you don't know what a Physics book looks like. Belzer also mentions many times that ancient texts are full of referances to aliens. The only proof being that, when you forget about the ancient culture's gods, rulers, complex mythology and take the texts and images completely out of context and forget about what real historians say, the images and text might talk about aliens. Belzer also says that aliens don't land on the White House lawn for all to see because they don't want to and sane credible people see aliens all the time but don't want to tell anyone. This kind of circular logic also proofs that pink flying elephants are real.
Funny stuff!.......2007-01-10
A great read, very funny. I doubt it would make good reference material for academics. I Loved reading it, it makes me think that I would really love to sit down and have beer or coffee with the Belz.
An unexpected level of research and depth of thought.......2006-11-19
When I first saw this title I thought that Richard Belzer had written a funny book filled with witty musings about little green men and movies in which Kevin Costner has a bad haircut." Belzer has made a turn toward the dramatic with his portrayal of detective John Munch in "Homicide" and "Law & Order SVU", a role he has had since 1993. However, this is still the same guy that was in the 1988 classic "The Wrong Guys". I was in no way prepared for what I was about to read.
Within the first few pages I was reading details about claims of heinous atrocities and government conspiracies. This was not the lighthearted work that I expected. From the very beginning, Belzer makes his goal clear. He urges the reader to "seek out suppressed evidence ... interpret independently everything you hear, read, and even what you see ... question authority."
Even if you are not a conspiracy theory enthusiast, it is hard not to get caught up in the unexpected depth of Belzer's research and his insights on the JFK assassination and alien visitors. I wasn't exactly "transformed from a cheerful trusting soul with unflagging faith in the powers that be into a suspicious, angry skeptic and cynic that can't sit through a 30-second news teaser," as Belzer promised, but reading the book has made me think and look at the situations in question in a new light.
For those who are not big on conspiracy, the information is presented in a way that would make even Lee Harvey Oswald chuckle. The book is both informative and entertaining, with sections with names such as "The Fluke of Earl" and "Just a Simple Nightclub Owner with a Dream". This book had me laughing one moment and somewhat scared the next. If you are not familiar with Belzer's comedy routine or acting, you might not appreciate this book as much as if you were. It makes it easier to tell when Belzer is joking around and when he is serious.
Belzer at his best!.......2005-12-16
This book is a fast paced read, and told to us in a way that you can almost imagine the Belz is actually there reading it to you. He reveals a great many things about the assassination of JFK that I had and had not heard over the years. Most notable are the similarities between Lincoln and Kennedy.
He delves into everything possible from the Warren commission, to there being as many as 60 men posing as Oswald in the months leading up to the assassination. Plus listing other conspiracy's as to who might have had a hand in Kennedy's death. The way he lays the info out there will make you wonder....is he right?
Go read it and decide for yourself....as for me I'm a believer! (But does that make me another lone nut? Read it and you really may just join the rest of us nuts.)

Book Description
Mary Pickford was a key figure in movie history, both as the first major silent-film actress and as a founder of United Artists, which made her the first major female film executive. Perhaps the first actress to convey realistic emotion on the screen, she was known as "America's sweetheart" from 1916 on, enchanting moviegoers with her amusing portraits of golden-haired princesses as well as her moving portrayals of sad-eyed waifs.
Eileen Whitfield re-creates Pickford's life in vivid detail, from her poverty-stricken childhood in turn-of-the-century Toronto through her reign as mistress of Pickfair, the Beverly Hills estate where she and her swashbuckling husband, Douglas Fairbanks, entertained in the 1920s, to her sadly moving demise in 1979. Along the way Whitfield casts a new light on one of the most important-but least understood-artists in the history of American film.
Customer Reviews:
I just saw her in a talking picture this morning on TCM........2007-02-16
I'm not rating the book, but rather some misinformation: in the book's description it says that she did not make the transition to talking pictures. I watched a talking picture this morning on Turner Classic Movies, Coquette(spelling?), released in 1929, which she was nominated for Best Actress. So yes, she DID make the transition to talking pictures; it just may not have been for long.
For Me, Not The Book I Was Looking For.......2006-12-04
I am looking for a Mary Pickford bio that has lots of information on her personal life. This book is not the one. I found it dull, boring and uninformative in regards to Mary's personal life. I stopped reading it!! I want to know more about Lottie and Jack and their deaths, and this book tells very little, and one paragraph when each of them die. No details, no places, addresses-all the things that make for really interesting and well researched books. Anyone can get information on their movies, filmographies and details of the studios. You could almost just repeat many books like this and just change the person who you're writing about. Everytime I found a tidbit of interest, it referred to Mary's own book "Sunshine and Sadness". Maybe I should read THAT book instead!
Definitive Pickford Biography.......2005-08-30
Eileen Whitfield's research and writing make this book a standout. This obviously took years to compile, write, and edit, but the result is a complete, fascinating look at this legendary actress and woman. As I read it, I kept wondering why she hasn't followed up with another Hollywood biography. She's that good.
Does this book answer the question: Who was Mary Pickford?.......2005-05-05
I've just finished reading the book "Mary Pickford: The Woman who made Hollywood" and I am left questioning "Who is Mary Pickford?" The author, Eileen Whitfield, thoroughly researches every aspect of Pickford's career-- her early stage struggles and triumphs, the start of her film career beginning at Biograph and the pinnacle of her success as the Queen of Hollywood with her King, Douglas-- but I am left with an abstract image of Mary. The business side of Mary is covered -- Her frugalness, her art of business at a time when it was not admired of women, is deeply discussed -- but something is missing. . . Emotion. I was shocked when the most important events in Mary's life (The deaths of her Mother, Sister, Brother, and ex-husband Douglas along with her suspected abortion, etc.) were relatively overshadowed by the seemingly endless sideline discussions of background issues not pertaining directly to Mary. For example, Pickford's reaction to the death of Fairbanks was reduced to maybe 2 pages (if not a little less) while the discussion of the emergence of film (Edison) to the life story of the creator of film narrative (DW Griffith) took 4 consecutive pages without a mere mention of Mary. In my humble opinion, the last chapters were the most important because suddenly the business of films became the side story (less discussed) while the tragic Pickford finally emerged, consumed by the family illness, Alcoholism. As I closed the cover for the last time, Mary's life felt somehow incomplete. I was left wondering, "Who was Mary Pickford?" I guess I'll try another book for the answer.
Absorbing biography, fascinating history.......2005-03-10
This is two books for the price of one, really. It's a first-rate, meticulously researched biography of Mary Pickford, the first major movie star. But it's also an informative overview of the early days of U.S. film production, valuable for what it reports about D.W. Griffith and other notables as well as Pickford.

Cosmic or Commercial.......2001-02-20
Not actually written by Mr. Stockhausen, this series of interviews challenges any aspiring musician/composer to be rid of cliches and knee jerk reactions, and to pay homage to the 'sound,' not the dollar. He is faithful to the end to the sovereignty of music, will draw your attention to the banal treatment given to sound design both in and out of the music industry, and will expand your sinusoid apperception, well... to a cosmic level. If you've ever wished you could construct an orchestra hall to meet your composition's specifications, you'll do well to read this extremely insightful dialouge.

Customer Reviews:
Based on real-life hard-nosed business experience? Nah!.......2003-05-05
I don't usually go out of my way to rip business books (preferring instead to simply disrecommend them to everyone I know) but as a struggling business owner who used to be a customer service professional, I would hate to let this book go unremarked-upon. It reads as if it were written by a cranky consumer who wants to get even with every retail business who done him wrong. If you believe that The Customer Is Always Right is the unofficial Eleventh Commandment, you may like this book. But I have a few nits to pick.
First. I don't doubt that many of the "50 Powerful Ideas" would do much to enhance your company's image in the eyes of your customers. The question is: At what cost?
At no point in this book is cost EVER addressed. It simply doesn't seem to have entered the author's mind. Sure, in an ideal world where the small business owner doesn't have to keep a tight rein on expenses, keeping customers would be simple. Just give them Free Stuff, as Dr. Timm recommends.
Second. Anyone who has ever worked retail, either in a supervisory or front-line position, knows that there are customers who cannot be satisfied, do not have a legitimate complaint and are hoping you will give them Free Stuff to make them go away. They don't seem to exist in Dr. Timm's universe, however. I found this omission to be very puzzling.
Third. Dr. Timm quotes "generally accepted facts" about customer service in the preface. I guess that's to avoid having to give references to actual studies. I would counter Dr. Timm's generally accepted facts by pointing out that 86% of all statistics are made up.
To sum up, if you want to take advice from a Ph.D. who has written nearly 40 books and countless articles on customer service and communication, this may be the book for you. If you want hard-headed practical advice from people who've been in the trenches, you'd be better off contacting your local SCORE chapter.
Great!.......2000-02-19
I'm the author of "Thinkertoys (A Handbook of Business Creativity), and "Cracking Creativity (The Secrets of Creative Genius) and, generally, read most businesss books that hit the market. This is a terrific book. Buy it and learn.
GREAT RESOURCE.......1999-10-23
I have read this book and studied under Dr. Timm. His matter-of-fact writing style helps to communicate his ideas in a simple, understandable, and effective manner. This book is a great addition to any customer service library
