Book Description
Master embroiderer and world-renowned textile historian Young Yang Chung brings a wealth of new information to light in Silken Threads, to date one of the most authoritative and comprehensive guides to the origins, history, aesthetics, and cultural context of embroidered textiles in East Asia. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of magnificent dragon and bridal robes, rank badges, kimonos, and other gorgeous embroidered textiles, this book is not only an indispensable reference in the field but also a delight to the eye.
The reader will discover in greater detail than ever before the fascinating evolution of the elaborately embroidered rank badge, a crucial element of clothing for all government officials at court in East Asian cultures. Chung's recent findings about Korean and Vietnamese embroidery traditions are also new to this book. The author's many revelations, uncovered through intensive research since the publication of her 1979 book The Art of Oriental Embroidery, should settle longstanding debates among textile scholars. AUTHOR BIO: Young Yang Chung, world-renowned embroiderer, is the author of Abrams' Painting with a Needle. Her 1979 book, The Art of Oriental Embroidery, was the first English-language book devoted to the development of silk embroidery in East Asia. She divides her time between her native Korea and New York. Robert D. Mowry is the Alan J. Dworsky Curator of Chinese Art at the Harvard University Art Museums.

Stunning Beauty.......2006-11-10
I splurged and ordered this book, and am I glad that I did. It was a jaw-dropping feast for the eyes, and well-worth ever penny spent on it.
The photographs are absolutely amazing, the details are brought to light
exceptionally well, and the text illuminates this Asian craft world just
perfectly.
One of the best features of this volume is that one can readily SEE in detail the various works of the needleworker's arts from each timeper-
iod, providing as an added bonus, inspiration for one's own embroidery.
I highly recommend this book, for needleworkers and designers and for
the aficionado of handwork arts.
Textile Treasures - a review by Jocelyn Chatterton........2006-05-03
This comprehensive account of East Asian embroidery is a must for any textile collector. Beautifully illustrated throughout and wonderfully informative it educates and feasts the eye. The photographic details are very clear and provide a good indication of the different textures. There is also a useful, fully comprehensive bibliography encouraging further exploration of this fascinating subject.
Silken Threads reviewed by Judith Rutherford.......2006-03-23
Silken Threads leads the reader through a wonderful journey charting the evolution of the embroidery of the East Asian region.
Dr. Chung apart from being a Master Embroiderer, and probably the only women in the word who has had a Museum named after her in her native Korea, is also a well respected Art Historian. This is not a "how to" book but a serious study of the history and art as it relates to the embroidery of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
It is well illustrated and reflects the many years of study that Dr. Chung has spent researching this absorbing area of study.
Silken Threads reviewed by Marilyn Gardner Hamburger .......2006-03-17
Silken Threads is real winner ! Collectors, Asian Art scholars ,and Costume designers ,both fashion and theater, will find this book an indispensable reference work in the field of East Asian embroidered textile and costume. What this book is NOT is a "how-to" on embroidery.
Dr.Chung gives a comprehensive history of the evolution of East Asian embroidery and the significant contributions it has made to the cultural history of the region. The influence of China and the dissemination of Chinese techniques , motifs and artistic convention on other regions in East Asia are thoroughly discussed. The author examines in depth a wide variety of embroidered costume ,accessories, household furnishings and religious textiles.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of this book, and there are many,is its pioneering effort in the field of Vietnamese textiles and
costume,a subject largely ignored before this publication .
Silken Threads is a exemplary production of scholarship, beautifully illustrated and completely documented .Dr.Chung's grasp of her subject represents the culmination of many years of extensive research by a leading authority on East Asian embroidered textiles .
Book Description
In many ways, Sherman is a guy's guy. He eats everything in sight. His so-called smooth moves with his girlfriend sink like a stone. And his happy-go-lucky manner endears him to all of his friends. What makes Sherman atypical is the fact that he's a great white shark whose pals include a smart-aleck hermit crab named Hawthorne, an intellectual fish called Earnest, and a sensible sea turtle known as Fillmore. For more than a decade, the daily adventures of Sherman and his coral companions have delighted readers of Sherman's Lagoon across the globe. Now Sherman and his sea urchin buddies take us for another swim down memory lane with Surf's Up, bringing together Sherman's Lagoon strips from 1994 and 1995, many of which have never before been published in book form. This roll-back-the-clock collection picks up where the successful Greetings from Sherman's Lagoon collection left off, offering the strip's loyal longtime readers the opportunity to catch up on classic Sherman tales of yesteryear. Whether you are a faithful follower of the silly yet sophisticated strip or new to Sherman's underwater world, Surf's Up will be a book you can't put down. Once you've seen the world through the eyes of Sherman, you'll never look at marine life the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff.......2007-06-27
I really enjoy Sherman's Lagoon and all the characters. I sent lots of funny books to my brother when he was stationed in Baghdad, and he said one of his sergeants was addicted to Sherman's Lagoon: he was more excited about getting another book than about getting home-made cookies! Now THAT's something!!

"top money maker in B-Westerns & wonderful family man ~ Randolph Scott".......2005-09-06
Empire Publishing presents "Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott?", telling the inside story of George Randolph Scott...born January 23. 1898 in Orange County, Virginia...left us March 2. 1987 in Los Angeles, California written by his son C.H. Scott in loving memory of his father.
Scott was a top box office draw for RKO, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, Paramount and Warner Bros...there was a an expression when you featured Randolph Scott in a film it was money in the bank...full of answers to many questions his fans had from early on...when you went to see him on the big screen, you got exactly what the marquee said...plenty of thrills, action and hard riding...a straight-shooting hero they had always known and was ageless...seems Scott got better with the more films he made and the scripts were always top notch.
Table of Contents (Chapter, Title and Page Numbers)
Introduction - 6
Chapter 1 - Keeping Up with the Giant - 8
Chapter 2 - On the Way Up - 41
Chapter 3 - Practice and Passion - 78
Chapter 4 - Humor -107
Chapter 5 - Family - 131
Chapter 6 - Friends - 158
Chapter 7 - On the Practical Side - 184
Chapter 8 - Problems - 211
Chapter 9 - Heroes - 225

As stated by Chris in the book "My fathers last four pictures were a fitting culmination to a career of excellence and dedication to the craft of acting and the audiences who were so faithful for several decades...RIDE LONESOME, WESTBOUND, COMANCHE STATIONS and his last film RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY"...Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously...would not settle for anything less than his best...same was true in his personal life.
Chris Scott reports Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits...well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry...they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with THUNDER OVER THE PLAINS, RIDING SHOTGUN, THE BOUNTY HUNTER, RAGE AT DAWN, TEN WANTED MEN, TALL MAN RIDING, A LAWLESS STREET and SEVEN MEN FROM NOW...in the mid '50s his was in igh gear with SUGARFOOT, SANTA FE, FORTH WORTH, MAN IN THE SADDLE, THE MAN BEHIND THE GUN, CARSON CITY and THE STRANGER WORE A GUN...his age seemed to matter little, they only came to see another Randolph Scott film and always got their money's worth...Scott's films were good and getting better becoming classics with SEVENTH CAVALRY, THE TALL T, SHOOTOUT AT MEDICINE BEND, DECISION AT SUNDOWN and BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE
"Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott?" was not disappointing to me at all...in fact his marriage to Pat Scott for over 45 years to the one women in his life is refreshing, especially in the Hollywood scene, which Randy was not a part of...his very close friends included Fred Astaire, Freeman Gosden (creator of Amos & Andy), Dwight David Eisenhower, Reverend Billy Graham, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Howard Hughes, Dinah Shore, Donna Reed (Chris Scott's Godmother), Tony Owen (Donna's husband)...agree with the one reviewer who states ~ As far as the book about his sex life,,,People forget that when Cary Grant and Randolph Scott were living together, it was not socially acceptable to be living with women when you were not married to them...one forgets that Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart also shared living quarters together early in their careers as bachelors, their sexual preference was never questioned
Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today...thank you Chris, for sharing your love for your father and the respect we all had for him...Don't miss this one...now appearing on Amazon and Empire Publishing ...Randolph Scott is alive and well in our hearts when the films he has made appear on Turner Classic Movies, DVD and books like this one come along...get your copy today. Great reading in the days and weeks to come...I guarantee it!

He still is my Hero.......2004-02-03
I have adored Randolph Scott ever since I was a little girl. This book was not disappointing to me at all. As far as the book about his sex life, gee it is funny that this author chose to write this after BOTH actors were dead. People forget that when Cary Grant and Randolph Scott were living together, it was not socially acceptable to be living with women when you were not married to them . I hardly think that if they had a problem, Randolph Scott would not have been married for 45 years to one woman and look at how many times Cary Grant was married. I was not a "Grant" fan but I sure respected Mr. Scott and how he kept his private life to himself. To me, Randolph Scott was the best looking man I have ever seen and he only got better with age. Then there was that quiet, gentleman nature about him that not another Actor in these days has. Do I love and respect him, Yes, I do. Thanks to his son also for sharing his love and respect for his father.
Biographical crumbs.......2003-10-13
As one who needed to clear cerebral cobwebs formed while I watched, as a boy in the 50's, Randolph Scott in Saturday westerns, I was tantalized by every chapter of What Ever Happened to Randolph Scott?. To add to this reader's exasperation with this mysteriously superficial biography, Randolph Scott's adopted son states at several points that Randolph's life was much more complex than the son is willing to reveal out of respect to Randolph's wife and friends. My guess is that Randolph's family still controls what is by all accounts a fabulous estate; thus both their own as well as Randolph's privacy interests will live on. If the family will not cooperate with an effort to substantiate and compile a definitive biography, there is virtually no chance that the son will ever be able to tell us more.
Nonetheless, my curiousity was relieved and I am grateful for crumbs.

Not a Scott bio, but a tribute of son to father.......2002-11-12
Originally published as "In the Footsteps of the Giant," (and listed on amazon.com under that title as well), this is a loving tribute of a son for his father. It is not at all a revelatory book, nor in any sense a biography of interest to film scholars. It earnestly refutes rumors regarding Scott's sexual orientation, but unfortunately does so only by calling the rumors ugly and baseless. I personally find the rumors less than convincing, but this book by Scott fils is not part of why I don't believe them. There is less insight into Randolph Scott than one would have liked here, and perhaps a little more about the son than the average film student needs. But it's a valuable book nonetheless, simply because it's one of the few pebbles in the gaping hole where a book-length study of Scott's life and career should be.
NOT AT ALL A BIOGRAPHY. Eternally boring................2000-06-09
The author did not answer his own question... Whatever happened to Scott after he stopped acting? Why was he so reclusive and so on? The author himself does not know.
The author testifies that his father was wonderful and dignified man, but what would most people write about their fathers? It seems that the son was quite distant from his father, because it was in his father's nature to be distant from everyone and everything.
C.H. Scott is preoccupied with one thing only in this book: refuting rumor about his father and Cary Grant. I sympathize with the author. But if he meant to fight against "the slander", then he fails. Instead of being factual and objective in his refute, he just keeps coming back to the issue with his childish arguments. As the result this book is THE MOST BORING READ ever!!!
The author talks about his own life too much. If this book was titled: "Me and My Dad, Randolph Scott", it would have been appropriate. There aren't even any good photos, except for "the young George Randolph Scott in his family house". The author should have taken a lesson from his father: When you have nothing to say, DON'T SAY ANYTHING!

Customer Reviews:
A valuable guide to keep with you.......2007-04-04
Like Mr. Doyles other new Lionel train guide for post war trains, the Collector's Guide to Prewar Lionel Trains, 1900-1942 is prove to be an important resource for both the buyer and seller of antique Lionel train sets. Containing information on virtually every toy train made by Lionel between 1900 and 1942, the book will prove to be a gold mine of information. However I found two of the appendices at the end of the book to be of particular value. Appendix I, Awakening Sleeping Toys and Appendix II, Setting Up Your Train each contain information important to the collector. There is also a small chapter on Lionel Catalogs and Paper Products and another chapter devoted to Accessories, Toys and Novelties.
All in all this is one you'll want to keep close.
record value.......2007-03-20
Has just about every record ever made with its corresponding value. Only thing not listed are instrumentals.
45 RPM Price Guide.......2007-02-06
I have found this to be the most informitive book on 45's that I have ever read. Not only does it give you a guideline on the value of the records in your collection, but it also gives you information on the artists such as other groups the artist has been with and the groups that have changed their names over their careers
As good as it gets.......2005-07-28
With records becoming more and more plentiful, it does lose a little of the obscure stuff it used to carry. However, it is a MUST for any collector!
Just the think you need for a lifetime hobby........2004-07-17
Ever wondered how much one of those 45s you have is worth? Here's the place to look. Not every artist is listed but with every new edition, more are added. I have a first edition which contains over 30,000 or so entries. The reason why I asked what I did above is beacuse if your collection contains older records or records that look just like the day they were first sold, you could probably have a collection worth thousands of dollars. Some songs are available on different labels, ones that are easy to find rather than ones that are rare on other labels. I saw that a near mint copy of "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and the Impressions on the Vee-Jay label is worth $10,000. A very good codition of that record is over $1,000. If someone has something rare like that or colored vinyl, they are lucky!! If this is your hobby whether you've started or it's been with you all your life, you shouldn't be without this book. RECOMMENDED!

Crystal Reprots 10 - complete reference.......2007-02-20
This is a very good, thorough book with lots of examples included. I have bought other books by the same publisher and have been very pleased with all of them.
Best Book on Crystal Reports 10.......2005-06-17
This book has been an invaluable resource in creating and publishing reports with Crystal Reports 10. I've been able to give it to new designers to get them up to speed and also use it to look for answers to quick questions on new features. Overall, this is the most versatile book I've found on Crystal Reports 10.
Complete but not for learners.......2005-04-02
This book delivers exactly what the title promises. It goes through Crystal Reports 10 screen by screen and feature by feature. It is well laid out and has lots of screen prints. There is way too much verbiage, at least for this reader.
So what's the problem? The book desparately needs examples of how you actually DO some of the things it talks about in such detail. Crystal gives you some really nice sample reports, but they are all finished, not exactly easy to break apart and understand. If this book had some case studies (eg, now lets build the chart report of Quarterly Sales by Employee), I would have found it a whole lot more useful.
Come to think of ut, I would trade this book in a minute for something more task-oriented and hands-on.
Good review -- lacks advanced depth.......2005-03-30
The text is one of the first available for Crystal Reports 10. It does a good job of covering all the basics. It even goes into some "intermediate" details in various sections. If you're new or fairly new to Crystal Reports, then the book will be a valuable reference to you.
If you're an experienced Crystal Reports developer, then this book will probably not get too much use. It lacks the hard-hitting details that would make it an excellent standard resource, and it's shy on the "topics for gurus" sections commonly found in complete references. One thing that is good about the book is the scope--there is not much left out entirely, so even an advanced developer will find bits of useful information, particularly when using Crystal Reports in new ways or on new platforms, etc.
If you're familiar with the earlier renditions of this book (i.e., for Crystal Reports version 8.5, etc.), then you will find this rendition exactly as expected.
Book Review.......2004-07-16
I have to say I'm disappointed in this book. Normally I don't buy McGraw-Hill "Complete Reference" books because generally I find them lacking sufficient detail and depth to do any real programming. I bought this book because there aren't an abundance of Crystal 10 books out yet and because Crystal Reports documentation is notoriously bad, but this book has lived up to my McGraw-Hill "Complete Reference" expectations. I find the book lacks sufficient detail and code samples to be of any real use for integrating Crystal Reports into an application. Specifically, I'm working with Part II, Crystal Reports 10 on the Web.
