This is truly a great collection of stories. The book has passages from various fighter pilots from various nations who took part in the Second World War's battles in the air. Told by the aces themselves, this book is a great read, and provides insight into the actions of many of these brave men as they risked their lives thousands of feet above, fighting for their countries as well as their own survival.

Sun King.......2005-04-03
Tom Tierney's tribute to the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV and his court, is a superb piece of graphic art. The glamour of the era is revived in all its splendour.
Most of the costumes worn by Louis XIV in portraits are faithfully recreated by Mr Tierney.
My reason for not giving this work 5 stars is that some details of this work were "not quite right". For example, one of the dolls is the Duchesse de Ventadour, when other figures played far greater roles in the Sun King's court but have not been included (eg the King's brother, Philippe, Duc d'Orleans and his second wife, Elisabeth von der Pfalz). Another reason is that some costumes don't seem to have been based on actual portraits, but were invented by Tom Tierney (eg the green and yellow dress of the Duchesse de Fontanges).
Finally, in the text the ladies of the court are referred to by their titles not their full names. I think that names are essential when including short biographies of the people included in the book.
Visually, this book is splendid, but it would not please historians who expect complete accuracy.

My wife's favorite current comic strip, Sherman's Lagoon, has another anthology collection out, and this is it. We get to see Sherman visit Venice, disguise himself as a human to rescue a friend, and deal with a military drill. No sidesplitters but definitely entertaining.

This book by J.P. Tommey is very witty and very funny. I reccomend this book to people who like to laugh.

I bought this book for my Dad as a birthday present because he loved this comic. I read it before I gave it to him, but I had to stop several times because I was paralyzed with laughter! This is definitely the funniest book I have ever read. After I read it, I immediately went out and bought the first book Ate That, What's Next. I was quite dissappointed in it. Then, I reread it about a month later and was in tears again! The simple reason: it's a great book, but this one is absolutely the best and I was expecting too much. Ate That was hysterical too, though just not as funny as Poodle: The Other White Meat. You should probably read Ate That first. Both books are great, and I can't wait to read the new third one, The Illustrated Guide to Shark Ettiquette!
Fun for every hairless beach ape!.......2000-09-03
This second collection offers us another look at the adventures of the funniest sea-dwellers known to man. There are several hilarious storylines here, including invasion from Navy Seals, Hawthorne's adventures off-island, Fillmore's trip, once again, to Ascension Island, the gang raising a baby sea turtle they call Clayton, the return of sun-loving polar bear Thornton, Sherman and Ernest's trip to Atlantis and, of course, Sherman's attempts to impress his girlfriend Megan. This is a great work of art and writing that anyone can enjoy, not just fans. It is always funny, often hilarious, and I am proud to own it. I'm sure you would be too. Thanks for another great book, Mr. Toomey!

Best book on defence.......2003-08-25
I recommend this book very highly for its content. It is a well organised and comprehensive guide on all aspects of defence, including many useful excercises. This book is not too advanced and should not go over the head of anyone rated above 1500, and it is useful for anyone below 2300.
Unfortunately, my copy of the book quickly fell apart. The binding is terrible. Therefore I only gave it 4 stars.
If you don't mind loose pages and if you know that you lose games that you should have drawn, studying this book will give you 100 extra rating points easily.
If you want to work even more on your defence, another excellent book is How to Be Lucky in Chess by LeMoir.
Great book on defense.......2002-03-13
This is a great book. Polugayevsky and Damsky are an excellent team, as Damsky is good at writing for the club-level player, and Polu was a total genius, but one whose writing is sometimes over the head of the club player. This book contains hudreds of excellent examples, and there is much instructive commentary. There is an effort to show why certain defensive ideas work in certain positions. This book will improve your defensive skill, there is no question about that. It will also improve your confidence that far more positions are capable of being saved than you would think. The book also has an excellent human touch, such as a hilarious story about a Reshevsky-Geller game that the American should have won, bub did not. Highly recommended!

French tarrach book needed for serious study.......2005-11-26
This book is most relevant french Tarrach book for serious player at moment (and I have all french books released on market in last 5 years), at least untill Pedersen book comes out sometimes next year(2006). And that book is been rescedueled for one year for the good reason - because this book is really of very high quality indeed. I gave this book just four stars for one reason, bit anoying to me - the variations and subvariations are embeded into individual games, which turns some games into real giants by size of it. But, quality of lines consered, this book is top line, with nice new sugestions by Psakhis at the end of many of them, and lot of objective evaluations of position.
He is not catched pushing the favor for black french player with overoptimism, when it is not to be.
So this book is actually very helpful one for white side of french tarrash.

Shogi by Cho-Yo.
This is a book about two things: 1. Japanese cultural superiority and, 2. Self-admiration of the author.
What this book is not about is .. you guessed it! - Shogi.
Every non-Japanese shogi player knows: books on shogi are rare. We look for each and every chance to learn more and to read more which is difficult - shogi is not that well known in the West, unfortunately both for shigi and the West. So, when I saw [money] book on shogi I immediately visualized pages and pages of discussions on boats and castles, moving and static rook openings, exqusite tsume etudes, etc. Alas! None of that.
But tons of ranting about Japanese victory in Russo-Japanese war, explained by the author as a result of Russian ignorance rendered in exquisit formulas:
Russia + ignorance (= - knowledge) = Japan + knowledge (= - ignorance)(see p.106).
That Russian ignorance and Japanese knowledge is attributed to the fact that Japanese play shogi and Russians don't.
The book is overloaded with Japanese terminilogy that does not add anything to the reader's understanding of shogi (and I am a former student of Japanese and ancient Chinese languages, so imagine how it will irritate anyone who is not interested in linguistics).
In addition to all that the reader will learn that Abraham was "not an individual person, but a horde of shepherds" of "outcast Brahmans" Indian Brahm - worshippers, that Hebrews are called so because they descend from a guy named Heber, and many other amazing thruths with no respect for any other opinion than author's (p.46).
The book was apparently written right after the end of the Russo-Japanese war (1905) and I have no idea if the author lived long enough to see the Japanese defeat in Manchuria, Khalkhin-Gol, the whole collapse of the Chinese campain, the Battle of Leite, Pacific fiasco of the Japanese fleet and the signing of the capitulation by Emperor Hirohito.
One would wonder if that can be attributed to Japanese stopped playing shogi all of a sudden?
As a lifetime student and admirer of traditional Chinese and Japanese cultures (among other things), Hayan poetry, caligraphy, literature and yes, shogi, I doubt that anyone should spend [money] on this book if his or her goal is to learn shogi, or anything else about things Japanese, for that matter.
However, professional students of Japan and especially of Japanese-Western cultural mentality (I hate this word) will find many fascinating subliminal messages in this book, that are quite unique in the sense that they are also expressed in traditional Japanese shogi terminology.

A High Quality Book.......2007-01-08
According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Jim Thomas's book "Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating". The author methodically and clearly explained his 21 rules for successful negotiations in a readable and humorous manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.
Jim Thomas stresses the need for win-win negotiations and how to achieve them. When carrying out effective negotiations is spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application to the complex world of negotiations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the negotiation process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in achieving successful and effective negotiations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.
While the book is an excellent guide for people involved in negotiations in the corporate world, it is also a valuable resource in the home and other scenarios.
Great Book easy and fun to read.......2006-12-03
Unlike Herb Cohen's book "Negotiate This" Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating will teach tricks of the trade from page one. This book will lay out how to start the negotiation, how to react to first offers, how to get to a great postion to counteroffer, and finally how to realize when someone is at the bottom line. It is easy to understand and fun to read. The tips and the practices can be used in real life scenarios from day one and incorporated into negotiations immediately, even with no practice. The rules will help in every scenario and show how the other side may react to concessions, counteroffers, nibbles and krunches. I highly recommend this book to anyone it is the best book on negiations I have read.
A very handy and usable guide to negotiating.......2006-09-04
Many of the tips in the book sound familiar from the other books on negotiating I've read. However, the author here does a good job in making a very readable guide as well as does a good job in explaining why the tip works. He also highlights particular pitfalls that await the unwary.
The author mentions early on that he is trying to add some humor into the work and apologizes, in advance, if we find it offensive. Nothing really stood out as offensive, but some jokes don't seem to fit with the principle he was explaining.
The tips are easy to remember, but as with all skills, the reader needs to practice these. The book is more than clear in explaining what and how to do it. I plan on using some of these myself.
The author points out that the bottom line is sometimes the bottom line. I never really thought about this, but it fits with the notion of win-win negotiating. We have to remember that most of our negotiations have an ongoing relationship component.
The back provides some tips on negotiating for a car or home. These are the most common negotiations we get into.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to brush up their negotiating skills. This is a skill that will help you at work or at home.

I bought the book because I was scheduled to go to a seminar of the same name.... I reluctantly started it thinking I was going to have to choke down a couple pages a day. Much to my surprise, I LOVED it! The content is very practical and usable...and.... the manner in which Jim shares the message is not only entertaining, but downright funny. Highly recommend the book....as well as the seminar.
Witty and smart.......2005-12-14
Jim Thomas is an intelligent and funny man. Just read this book to see. His approach to negotiating is invigorating and principled. If you follow his rules, you should find yourself rewarded with good deals without humiliating the other person. If you walk away with nothing else from this book, take this: Americans are some of the worst negotiators in the world, so you are immediately one leg up on everyone else.
