Although the text is rich with descriptions, I was expecting more illustrations, either photographs (historical and/or contemporary) or line drawings. The few that are included are helpful, but more on women's dress would be very helpful. This book concentrates to a large extent on male dress, not very enlightening for a woman trying to recreate traditional women's dress.

5 out of 5 stars Shonen Jump Series 1 Books.......2007-01-04

This was a gift for our son for Christmas! It was great he has read most all of them and now wants most of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Shonen Jump Manga Magic.......2005-11-09

This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.

This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.

Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:

      (1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.

      (2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.

      (3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.

      (4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.

      (5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.

      (6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.

      (7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

4 out of 5 stars Exceeded my Expectations.......2007-05-19

Try, for a moment, to put aside all you think you know about Yu-Gi-Oh! and imagine something completely unexpected. Forget about the children's TV series. Don't give the card games another thought. And try to get past the tons of merchandise featuring Yugi's image. Let's begin to reconceptualize the character of Yugi.

That is, essentially, all that is needed in order to more fully enjoy Kazuki Tanahashi's creation, Yu-Gi-Oh! In the Manga, Yugi isn't the tough-talking little Goth boy you might expect. Instead, Yugi seems to be the polar opposite of this characterization - and deliberately so. A comparatively small teen with awkwardly-proportioned hands and feet, the slightly-effeminate Yugi struggles daily with schoolyard bullies, cruel adults, and even the doldrums which epitomize teenage life. While everything seems stacked against him from the get-go, Yugi finds himself optimistic, enjoying life whereas other similarly-affected kids would be beaten down by these oppressive forces.

And this is because he has a mind which is constantly stimulated by the games his grandfather provides him with. You see, Yugi loves puzzles more than anything, and can make a game out of anything. This is the quality that both alienates him from his peers, and gives him limitless courage to face each trial of the schoolyard. In this sense, there's some degree of all of us - after all, who doesn't love a good game? Who among us hasn't daydreamed about getting lost in some fancy labyrinth, or of solving a particularly challenging mind game?

As a result of his passion for puzzles, Yugi becomes someone different from time to time - a personality over which he has no conscious recollection or knowledge. This Yugi is a sadist, one who has no qualms over hurting those who tread upon the weak as a means of poetic justice. This Yugi plays games of a different sort, ones which torture the players unfortunate enough to lose ("Penalty Games," dished out to those who seemingly deserve such extreme punishments - blindness, insanity, death by fire, etc.), but only those who have manipulated others and exploited their helplessness. This Yugi later becomes known as "Yama Yugi" (or, "Dark Yugi").

In creating this series, creator Mr. Tanahashi explains that he had no concept of how popular his little character would become in the marketplace and in the media. Having met with no prior success, Mr. Tanahashi had no way of anticipating what would become of his little "strange story... that centered around 'The Mysterious' in everyday life." The first appearance of the ubiquitous card game based on the Manga does not even make an appearance in this first volume (a 7-issue series which spins off into Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist and nearly concurrently, Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium World, and today's hot property Yu-Gi-Oh! GX).

While this book is - as one might expect - very popular with the kids, it certainly isn't the average American-written "kids' book." Inside these pages are tales of abuse, murder, torture... and, sometimes, even some bawdy humour ("Never play basketball in a skirt," says Anzu, the book's female protagnist). Certainly, it is filled with goofy stories light on the plot and occasionally, heavy on the characterizations - so it's a nice, light read. It's a children's title by way of Suzuki Koji, much the same way Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro was almost a grown-up movie disguised as kids' fare.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a fun ride, packed with calculated fear and excitement, and endowed heavily with humanizing imagery (especially poignant is the image of Yugi reaching into a box, having nearly completed the 3-D puzzle he had kept with him for eight years, his clumsy hand searching for the final puzzle piece... only to discover it was missing, for all his pains. After watching him get beaten and extorted by a much larger classmate, knowing that the puzzle was what gave poor Yugi the most enjoyment out of life... This painful little scene is almost too much for dry eyes to absorb). It may not be the best of the genre, but it does deserve the attention it has received.

It also deserves a little more respect as well, but with marketing ever the ceaseless beast, this probably isn't too likely.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun, Fast, and Occaisionally Disturbing Read For Teens.......2006-04-23

Many American children, especially those in the 7-12 age bracket, watch Yu-Gi-Oh regularly. Kids love the action and strategy. Parents love the 'appropriate' factor. Teens, however, hate the kiddiness, and anime purists abhor the editing.

Guess what? It's a lucky day for teens and anime fans.

Threats, fist-fights, and disturbing games (with disturbing conclusions) run rampant in this first volume of Yu-Gi-Oh, and although most people will love it, parents need to be warned--this is not for children under the age of 12.

Also, you won't find the card game 'Duel Monsters' anywhere in this first volume--in fact, it doesn't become the main part of the story until later on in the Yu-Gi-Oh anthology. Instead, however, you'll find out the origins of Yugi and his friends (with their original, un-Americanized names). And while all of this was originally created for a Japanese TV show, when 4Kids brought YGO over to the US, they skipped over the first few story arcs, and got right to the card battles.

Also, it's important to note that as this is a manga (Japanese comics, for the uninitiated) graphic novel, it reads from right to left, in traditional Japanese fashion. Of course, this means that you read the panels and text bubbles from right side to left side, but the translated text is written from left to right. It's ok if you don't understand--VIZ (the publishing company) provides a key in the graphic novel to help you learn how to read it. After 30 or 40 pages, reading like this will become second nature, so don't fret about that.

VIZ translates the sound effects, which is nice. The artwork is very nice (though not amazing), consistent, and easy to look at. The translation is very well done, with footnotes explaining any Japanese pop-culture references you might miss.

Overall, I'd highly reccomend it--to anyone over 12, and especially to older Yu-Gi-Oh fans who want to see a little bit darker take on the story.

      5 out of 5 stars Yu-Gi-Oh! manga.......2006-04-01

The first 7 volumes of the manga is pretty much what happened in the series that wasn't shown in the US. I recommend this to manga readers 11+ but be warned, there is violence and a lot of swears in this manga. I am 13 years old

      4 out of 5 stars Yu-Gi-Oh! begins!!!.......2006-02-20

This is a good volume, of course it starts the series so don't expect anything too deep. The art is okay compared to takahashi's later style in duelist. The best story in this volume is duel 1:the puzzle of the gods cause that is where it starts. The others are fair but in my favorites includes duel 4 and 5.Note this is not for kids since it's too violent, doesn't feature the cards and the names and storyline are completely different from the edited tv show.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome! I <3 Yugi!.......2005-12-02

This is the book to get if you are a Yuugiou! fan like me. This was great to look at, since I never watched a series from the start. It really explains how Joui and Honda became mates with Yugi, and how Anzu actually feels about Shadou(my name for Yami no Yugi, 'cause he doesn't get one in the book). I'm a fan because I read this and The Cards With Teeth. Buy those together, because they are too darn good! It's a little violent, what with that guy with a knife, a criminal with a gun, use of explosives, but that's Yuugiou! for you. Oh, and if you're a concerned parent, you might want to be careful. It IS a PG13, you know. But Joui's mad antics and Yugi's journey of self discovery level out the violence. Let the games begin! Yuugiou! (Yes, I spelt it right.)

I laughed, howled and made a fool out of myself reading this book. Funny, for folks who can look at themselves and laugh out loud. I saw myself and my family here. We all ghetto, no matter what color, part of the country or how much money you have (or don't).

Like it or not, this book is real. Unfortunately, some people run from the truth. I found myself and people that I know, in this book. It was so funny, as it brought back some memories.

The short film is a unique narrative art form that, while lending itself to experimentation, requires tremendous discipline in following traditional filmic considerations. This book takes the student and novice screenwriter through the storytelling process- from conception, to visualization, to dramatization, to characterization and dialogue- and teaches them how to create a dramatic narrative that is at once short (approximately half an hour in length) and complete. Exercises, new examples of short screenplays, and an examination of various genres round out the discussion.

A comprehensive guide to writing this challenging form
Numerous exercises to jumpstart visualization and writing

I had to write a note because the 2 previous reviewers were rather unfair. I've been reading the 2nd ed though and there may be some difference. I've certainly read my share of film books and numerous plays, how-to-write plays, and screen play writing books (Syd Field, Micheal Tierno, Michael Stracynski, etc.) I'm looking at them on my shelf at present.

First of all, this book is NOT about writing Hollywood screenplays, the cover tells you that. Instead, it makes a number of good suggestions for other resources and in writing a short play I found it very useful because of these references and its short descriptions of the mockumentary and various approaches to conceptualizing visual stories.

I also teach a filmmaking course for ESL students and this was a very useful book. It is not a how-to-nuts-and-bolts book however and I suppose this is why the other two reviewers slammed it.

All I can say is look through a book carefully before you buy it.

Is it too much to ask for a book on writing to be well written?

Writing the Short Flim was tedious. Reading the book was like trying to run underwater. The writers talked and talked and talked yet managed to say little if anything at all. The end result if feeling as if your brain had been smashed out of your skull with a hollow, plastic baseball bat.

There were some helpful insights, however they are few and far between. In fact, it came down to one useful bit of information per 20 pages. 20 pages of tedious, headache inducing rambling for one sentence of useful information.

There are many other writing books that are much more helpful: Syn and Syntax. Story by Robert McKee. Writing for Emotional Impact by Karl Iglesias. Writing Short Scripts by William H. Phillips. And David Mamet's Three Uses of the Knife.

1 out of 5 stars Not the helpful text you'd hoped for.......2006-01-18

As a graduate film student, I found this book to be very unhelpful. The elements you would expect from a screenwriting textbook (clear discussion of basic structure, character development, etc.) are missing or hidden in clumsily-worded chapters.

There is little overall stucture to the book as a whole, and each chapter itself is a frustrating read. Even the directions for the exercises are unclear. It is an uninformative, confusing waste of time that will leave you no wiser about what makes a good short screenplay.

                        Book Description

Technical Analysis of Stock Trends, 8th Edition, is a critical reference for investors--especially in today's tumultuous markets. This seminal book--the first to produce a methodology for interpreting and profiting from the predictable behavior of investors and markets--revolutionized technical investment approaches and continues to show traders and investors how to make money regardless of what the market is doing.

Now, with the addition of noted technical analysis authority W. H. Charles Bassetti (editor)--as well as charts and graphs that pertain to today's market environment and major stocks--this completely updated and revised edition confirms the wisdom of the original work for today's markets. Technical traders and chartists will turn to it for:

                        * Information on utilizing electronic markets, the Internet, wireless communications, and new exchanges, plus current ideas on portfolio management and risk management
                        * Chapters on futures and derivatives charting and trading
                        * Expanded treatment of "runaway" markets--to help put the recent Internet stock craze in perspective

"Chart formations," states Charles Bassetti in the preface, "are the language of the market." Technical Analysis of Stock Trends, 8th Edition, translates that language for a new generation of technical traders and investors.

5 out of 5 stars Old classic version is much better!.......2007-09-03

Most of the information presented in this book comes from the old classic version from the original authors John Magee and Robert D Edwards. You get more "bang for your buck" if you buy the used older version 4 or version 5 (Revised) and still have some money left in your pocket.
I remember paying just $12.50 for Version 4 in the early 60's. I don't think the supplements(upgrade) to the text to bring in modern stocks is worth the extra money. The price patterns are like road signs you should be able to visualize them on any chart regardless what time-frame. After you have read this book you should be skillful in drawing trend lines, channel lines, and identifying trends. Even today you see the same old basic chart patterns occur as the old fashioned charts a century ago. No oscillators or momentum-based indicators are needed. Experience is your best teacher when you look at chart patterns and there are many more to identify that you don't see in this book. In the market you must look at what is happening now then predict what is going to happen, not what has already happened to make money. The market always looks through the front windshield not through the rear view mirror.
An interesting Chart pattern book I would recommend you to read after you have read this book and check his website for more books /chart patterns. "Getting Started in Chart Patterns" by Thomas N. Bulkowski.

Who was John Magee? Can read about him in this book entitled. "100 Minds That Made the Market" by Kenneth L. Fisher.

5 out of 5 stars Not just updated, completely new and must have..........2007-04-29

If Edwards and Magee wrote the bible of technical analysis in 1948 when they first published "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends." then why do we need a Ninth Edition of their classic? This question was foremost in my mind as I began reading this recently released version of a book I spent many hours with as I prepared for the CMT exams. After reading all 832 pages, I realized that in many ways, the financial markets, and technical analysis, are finally maturing to the point where we can fully grasp the significance of what was first written almost sixty years ago. With a focus on pragmatic portfolio theory, editor Charles Bassetti significantly contributes to the technical analysis body of knowledge especially related to tactics, and has created a book worth a space on every technician's bookshelf.

In this edition, Bassetti delivers much more than an update - it's actually a new book. He focuses on strategies for increasing profits:

                        * The basics of traditional chart analysis are clearly presented, just as Robert Edwards meant for them to be. In keeping with the practice of earlier editions, Bassetti retains the original charts showing examples of patterns from the 1940s and earlier. He also includes more than two dozen new charts, demonstrating that the same old patterns still work today. The detailed discussion of the market psychology that forms these patterns may stimulate modern analysts to program the patterns.
                        * Adds a comprehensive explanation of Magee's "basing points" procedure for setting initial and trailing stops on any position. Bassetti adds a chapter and charts to clarify this powerful concept, which in itself is worth more than the cost of the book.
                        * For what may be the first time, Bassetti provides an annotated chart of the Dow, combining an in-depth discussion of Dow Theory with a visual history of the signals. We've all seen tables showing the sell signal in Oct 1929 or the buy signal in late-1990 which lasted more than seven years, but the chart erases any doubt that Dow Theory is a valuable timing tool. Creating a comprehensive source on the Dow Theory, he also includes an overview of Robert Colby's method to automate the signals.
                        * Provides a link to www.edwards-magee.com, which offers downloadable material that supplements the text. As one example, readers can download pdf files of the Dow Theory signals for closer examination.
                        * Offers new perspectives on short-term and futures trading. The extensive new material on commodity trading, including a complete trading plan, was not addressed in previous editions.

Bassetti also ensures the reader understands the similarities between Magee's Sensitivity Index and Modern Portfolio Theory's Beta; and the striking resemblance of Magee's Composite Leverage to the financial engineering concept of Value at Risk. Readers of previous editions may not have realized that Magee developed these concepts decades before Nobel Prize-winning work was undertaken in these areas. Magee wrote in the language of the trader (semi-log charts), rather than the academician and his ideas have been overlooked by economic theorists.

A classic book is one that stands the test of time. No one can argue that Technical Analysis of Stock Trends fails in this regard. Patterns that worked a hundred years ago are still found in financial markets and they still work. The forecasting ability of patterns lies in their ability to document the history of human nature, which remains unchanged over many centuries.

Another feature of classic works is a unique style. Edwards and Magee filled their work with examples - current at the time of publication. They wrote with clarity and ease of style not usually found in textbooks. Their text was a practical "how to" manual that explained the "study of the action of the market itself" in concrete terms. It appealed to those seeking the Holy Grail on Wall Street, and to those serious students of the markets seeking an edge. In this new edition, Bassetti retains all of their style and introduces his own, which in all ways is similar to the original, but with a modern edge.

Bassetti believes that Magee's concept of basing points is worth a great deal of additional study. This is one of the most significant contributions he makes to the new edition, updating this section in the tactics to ensure that all traders understand this method of stop placement. His example is clear, and the reader can instantly implement this technique, which Bassetti thinks of as one of the most valuable in the book.

Some question whether classical chart reading is still a valid discipline in an era defined by cheap data, powerful scanning and backtesting software, instantaneous execution and quantitative analysis. After reading this book, you'll be left with a deeper appreciation of the value of chart reading and will become an even stronger proponent of technical analysis in modern markets.

I believe this is one of the original books to have been published on stock market technical analysis. Magee and Edwards do an excellent job explaining Dow Theory and stock chart analysis. I bought the 5th edition because it was the last edition that was actually edited by the original authors. This book is the source of most modern technical analysis theory. It covers reversal patterns, gaps, support and resistance, consolidation patterns, trendlines and channels (by Edwards); and then goes into stock selection, stop orders, how to build a chart, and the practical application of those patterns and how to use them in your trading (by Magee). I read the book from cover to cover and refer back to it all the time in my technical analysis. It's an excellent resource!

Informative and a very good resource tool when I need it. Easy to read narration which is a feature when the content can be a little dull at times.

Robert Edwards description and analysis of the Dow Theory is, as Professor Bassetti so astutely states on page 48, a "magisterial presentation". I am proud to have been asked to add my interpretation to the update since Dr. Edwards death. Believe it or not, the Dow Theory is alive and well in the 21st Century and this book will help you understand why.
