Rather boring, actually...........2003-01-11
Gaskell's work is rather boring and dreary. Riffing on earlier precedents (most notably Sherman, even if this is not "self portraiture" per se) Gaskell's tableaux reek of a rather vapid revisitation of staged scenario a la her Yale professor and one time boyfriend Gregory Crewdson (check out his book on amazon.com "Twilight," and you'll see exactly what I mean) combined with a weak attempt at some kind of feminized fairy tale world gone wrong. Technically, the work is adequate, but cýmoný. is this the best that art world photographers in their 30ýs have to offer? If so, itýs going to be a long, dry spell, indeed.
My New Favorite Photographer.......2002-02-20
Anna Gaskell recently put up an exhibition in my school's art gallery, and I was simply floored. The vibrancy of her photos are what originally attracted me, and are still the most striking part of the photos, and the drawings are just creepy enough to keep a high-schooler such as myself interested. But when I picked up this book, the meaning behind the photos becomes clearer. Gaskell has created several photo essays with not only incredible tone, lighting, and subjects, but she also has a fine theory behind her pictures: of being uncomfortable with an adolescent body, the pressure of pre-teens, and the weirdier sides of Alice In Wonderland.
I'll admit I haven't had very long to think about why I like Gaskell's work so much - I just got home from the exhibit - but I highly recommend her, not just aesthetically but for the thoughts behind them.

Anna Gaskell made her international debut in 1997 with a series of twenty color photographs loosely based on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Casting twin girls in the "Alice" character, Gaskell staged each photograph according to her interpation of the fantasy world of wonderland and the travails young girls encounter establishing their identity.
This catalogue has been published for the exhibition Anna Gaskell, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and curated by Bonnie Clearwater October 18 to December 6, 1998.

Anna Gaskell is prominent among a generation of artists who emerged in the late 1990s and have redefined the landscape of contemporary art, building upon cinematic strategies pioneered a decade earlier by artists such as Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons. Gaskell and others of her generation have invented an entirely new discourse, one in which narrative is disrupted, lacking closure and connectivity. Gaskell goes further yet, creating bodies of work that appear to tell stories but confound one's ability to draw clear connections between the different images within a given series. In Half Life, a new project commissioned by The Menil Collection, Gaskell draws inspiration from stories like Rebecca, The Old Nurse, and The Turn of the Screw, to create an installation of video and photography that plumbs the dark recesses of the human psyche, embodying a sense of fear, isolation, and uncertainty. Accompanied by the first published biography and bibliography on the artist, as well as an interview and essay by Matthew Drutt, curator of the project, with contributions by Niall Mackenzie and Francis McKee.

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. Essays & Photography Great, But Hard to Appreciate Videos.......2004-02-21
This book accompanies a 2003-2004 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It begins with 30 pages of essays: "Introduction," "Picturing Movement, Past and Present," and "Art Photography after Photography." These essays do an excellent job of placing the exhibition in context. In addition, they mention works in a smaller 2002-2003 version of the exhibition in New York, which included some artists (e.g., Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, and Robert Smithson) not represented in the Bilbao exhibition.
The body of the book ("Catalogue Entries") consists of text about and photographs or video stills by 50 artists in alphabetical order (Marina Abramovic through Jane and Louise Wilson). Each of the artists is given up to one page of text. For most of the artists there is only one page of images, but Francis Alys, Matthew Barney, Miles Coolidge, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Mariko Mori, Aika Noguchi, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotte Rist, Michal Rovner, Thomas Struth, Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker have at least three pages. Some works by Dijkstra, Gaskell, Goldin, Gursky, Anthony Hernandez, Manglano-Ovalle, Mori, Orozco, Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Taylor-Wood, and Tillmans are not reproduced in the book but were in the exhibition (per the list on pages 205-216). Virtually all of the works are dated 1990-2002; some images of Goldin's were taken in the 1970s and 1980s but were published later. For each artist, 2-4 "selected readings" are listed in the back of the book.
The photography is mostly great, but the book does not really do the videos justice for a couple reasons. First, there are not enough stills to give the reader a good idea of the course of each video. I would have preferred a larger number of smaller-sized stills. Second, the one-page-of-text limit for each video artist gives the same amount of space for the massive Cremaster series by Barney as for a three-minute video by Patty Chang. You'll have to travel to Spain to fully appreciate the videos, but meanwhile buy the book from Amazon.com!

As a director this was an excellant resource book, however my seamstresses found it next to impossible to figure out the patterns. It would take someone quite comfortable in making patterns. The directions are there and could be worked out with enough effort and trial. Still, as a resource it's great and was quite useful. The designs and details alone are worth the price.

This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1905 and 1907-1909.

This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, since it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it. Remember, this is mid-late edwardian.
Wonderful pattern source.......2005-10-23
Being a costumer, I'm frustrated that there aren't enough "authentic" patterns, with the fine details that they had, being produced out there, except for the "Halloween-type" costumes. This is a great resource for patterns that have the look and period-correct construction techniques. Ms. Grimble has chosen some truly beautiful ones from real vintage patterns to include in her book. I haven't had a chance to learn how to scale the patterns up yet, but look forward to it.

An affectionate critique of being raised a GUBA.......2003-10-14
We evangelicals tend to take ourselves rather seriously (lest anyone think we don't take our beliefs seriously) and many of us could use a little nudge in the ribs from time to time. This book strikes an ideal tone as it pokes gentle fun at the uniquely American fundamentalist/evangelical Christian experience.
Those of us who were raised this way (GUBAs, abbreviated from the title) know EXACTLY what the author is talking about even though I'm sure most others would be quite bemused. Slyly humorous observations such as "Why Women Cannot be Ushers" made me realize just how steeped I am in the cultural experience. This book is a delight to read and to laugh over with your fellow grown GUBAs.

You only "get it" if you have been there - it simply wouldn't make sense to anyone else (nor should it, for a "born again" upbringing is something understood only from the inside). My adrenaline surged at the mere thought of a Sword Drill and I realized that I no longer need to be embarassed that scripture verses, hymns, and all the books of the Bible are always at the tip of my tongue. "Growing Up Born Again" is a must read for all survivors (and perpetuators!) of this unique cultural experience. Too bad it is out of print . . . I know of many who would eagerly laugh and cry at the memories this book brings back to life.

Although this is not the single best book on documentary film, it is arguably the best collection of essays gathered on the subject. A wide range of viewpoints are represented, and the organization is logical and easily understood. This was a text in a documentary production course I took as a graduate student, and now that I will be teaching such a course, I plan to use it as well.

The articles Rosenthal collected are the best in the field. The documentary needs more theoretical input like this to give the new film makers a better understanding of the art of documentary film making.

This book provides great insight into the life of Richard Petty. I grew up a fan of the King, but this compilation of his own words let me know that not only is Petty the guy with the big hat and the big smile -- he is the guy with the big heart, great sense of humor, and tremendous courage. This is a fun book to read, and you'll learn a lot about perhaps the greatest NASCAR racer of all time.

Gives you a lot of information in tables and charts. Well orgainzed and easy to reference. Has some helpful hints and clues to make the game easier to learn. It is NOT going to help you WIN. Expanded Instruction Manual - Little Strategy.......2002-11-22
I bought this manual hoping to quickly get up to speed with the new game. I knew enough to play at the more basic levels but wanted tips on how to improve my playing level. What I found in this book was a nicely complete instruction manual, and very little in the way of strategies, tips, etc.
While I did read the book cover to cover and learned a few rules and features that I was unaware of beforehand, it did little to improve my level of play. This is a very complex game, and knowing a few basic tips/tricks can be immensely helpful. Most of the tricks I've learned came from extensive playing (it's easy to get [pulled] into this game) and message boards online - Yahoo groups, civfanatics, etc.
If you have money to burn and want a comprehensive instruction manual buy this book. If you are looking to improve your level of play, you won't find it here.
Knowlegeable Civ players must pass on this.......2002-11-15
This guide is only for those people who don't know the difference between a spearman and a warrior, or for those who get eliminated while playing the Chieftain level, which isn't an easy feat.
Otherwise, it does the job it's supposed to.
What the Manual Should Have Been.......2002-11-02
Once again Prima sets the standard for what a strategy guide should be. It's well-written, well-illustrated and well-organized, which are three things that are lacking in the hefty manual that is provided with the game. And unlike the manual, the Prima strategy guide endeavors to answer the cause-and-effect question of why something happens, instead of leaving the secrets of the game to a frustrating series of trial and error. If you read this book you'll still stay up half the night playing Civ III, but you'll be in a better mood when you finally do reach that ever-elusive stopping point and go to bed.

I love CIV III despite the almost absurdly long times at the end. Especially fun are the huge games in which you are sometimes centuries meeting your nearest neighbor. The most annoying facet is control of enemy territory. It is nearly impossible to keep a city once it is captured as it almost always reverts back to its former owners. Fix this bug!

The one thing I don't like about the game: It is nearly impossible to keep a city once it is captured as it almost always reverts back to its former status. Fix this bug!

I thought this book was pretty good. A lot of it is review (for me) but I did learn some other strategies and tricks. The tricks weren't as useful as I thought, but besides that, the book provides good information for beginners and veterans.

The Play the World Strategy Guide is nothing more than a printed version of the Civlopedia, which is included with the game. The "strategies", if we call them that, can be summed by saying: "win the game". The manual reminds players to keep the end objective of winning in mind, but provides zero guidance on how to get there. Anyone with a week of playing experience could probably right a more insightful look into the game.

What an awesome book. I am a Delta employee with 18+ years and this is the best book I have read regarding my company. Although the Leadership would have us "little people" believe Delta is in bankruptcy because of us, this book places the Responsibility right where it belongs, with the CEO and Board of Directors. Thank you Mr. Nolan for disclosing the real facts! Those of us on the inside can relate to your book. It should be required reading, but instead, management at Delta has a prepared script to refute the truth disclosed in the book.
A Gripping Story...And It's Non-Fiction Too! .......2006-08-20
With a sharp eye and a keen analytical pen, Harry Nolan holds up a chronological mirror for the reader so we can see the step-by-step erosion of this once-fine company. It's a shame that Delta didn't hire advisors with his insight when the cracks in the company's armor started to appear. Acknowledging current CEO Gerald Grinstein's efforts now to 'row the boat ashore', Nolan does not cut him any slack for his past omissions/commissions as a member of this infamous Board of Directors. WHERE WAS THE BOARD? is a question asked often throughout the book. This book should be required reading for every Director, present and future, of every company, to witness what can occur when the Board relinquishes its responsibilities as Delta's Board did. A gripping story...and it's non-fiction too!
Meltdown At The Top.......2006-03-16
Once nationally recognized as one of the finest major corporations in the United States to work for, this book provides an insight into how a great company was led astray by an unfortunate string of incompetent leaders. This book should be required reading for anyone asked to serve on a company's Board of Directors or as a CEO/President. Lessons learned should be the ability to recognize a pattern of poor decisions and take decisive action before it is too late.
Peter Drucker type writing style - easy to read, valuable information with key management points expressed succinctly.......2006-01-13
The book is an easy read. It is well organized and flows logically. In addition, it has slightly larger type with plenty of white space for improved readability.
The author writes in a style similar to Peter Drucker, one of my favorite business writers. He expresses valuable key management points in a succinct, easy to understand way.
The author brings his vast consulting experience together to very effectively relate to the issues that Delta faced. His perspective is how Delta's leaders - 7 CEOs and their Board - dealt with those issues and the leadership lessons we can all learn from the decisions of those leaders.
From this leadership perspective, he chronicles the company history, starting with C.E. Woolman, founder of Delta and a great leader during the company's early decades. Nolan then graphically shows how the roots and a culture that caused a growing company to flourish and thrive were damaged or abandoned by later leaders, ultimately leading Delta into bankruptcy.
The points made regarding the agenda of some management consultants are right on target. They deserve serious consideration by any CEO, Board or executive.
The book is a valuable, textbook case study in how a great company can go awry when the leaders lose focus and depart from the values and culture that made it great.
Should be required reading for every MBA student in America........2005-12-03
While telling the fascinating story of Delta's rise and fall, the author effectively and poignantly presents the management lessons to learn (or relearn) from the story. The many valuable lessons include integrity, responsibility, leading by example, teamwork, and knowledge of the customer. This book should be required reading for every MBA student in America.
