Writing in 'Clothes Show' magazine in 1995, journalist Sylvia Patterson memorably declared: "Marcus Schenkenberg is so good-looking it is, frankly, preposterous. He's a cartoon fantasy man...his chest is a two-seater sofa!" It isn't simply that Marcus is so completely, breathtakingly beautiful - that much should be obvious to anyone who's ever seen his image in print, on film, on the Web, or even in the flesh - it's also because his inevitable success as 'the first male supermodel' prompted a renewed interest in men's clothing and hygiene at a time when the fashion industry seemed oblivious to this gaping hole in the market, and because he paved the way for an entirely new breed of celebrated male models, including Michael Bergin and the awesome Tyson Beckford, amongst others. Hence the title of this archetypal 'coffee table' book, "Marcus Schenkenberg New Rules" (1997), an uncredited collection of essays, interviews and observations from some of fashion's top-rank glitterati - Gianni Versace, Bruce Weber, Richard Avedon, et al - copyrighted by Universe Publishing, Marcus Schenkenberg himself, and Boss Models.

Anyone expecting a pure beefcake portfolio in the manner of Marcus' eye-popping calendar work may be slightly disappointed by the majority of photos in this book, which examines the 'Marcus' phenomenon almost exclusively within the context of his achievements as a fashion model. There's a smattering of wholly gratuitous body shots, of course (including a number of magazine covers, and a full-page, full-color study of his naked torso on p. 8), but even those images which feature partial nudity are as much concerned with selling the clothes as the man who's wearing them. There isn't a lot of biographical detail in the sparse text, either: We learn that he was born Marcus Lodewijk Schenkenberg van Mierop in Sweden - there are brief valentines from his mother and older brother, along with some endearing childhood photographs - but we're only given a vague summary of his early family life, and not even a specific date of birth (4 August 1968). We're also told that he came to America to seek his fortune in 1988 and was discovered by photographer Barry King the following year whilst rollerblading in Venice Beach, California. Immediately signed to an agency, Marcus struggled for a time to secure meaningful employment until 1991, when his appearance in a Calvin Klein advertising supplement (designed and photographed by Bruce Weber) in 'Vanity Fair' made him famous overnight. And no wonder: Amongst other things, the supplement contained the justly-famous shot of Marcus (reproduced here in slightly abbreviated form on p. 49) luxuriating beneath an open shower, totally naked except for a loose pair of jeans which he's holding between his legs, barely concealing his modesty - an image so erotic and powerful, it can take even the most jaded observer completely by surprise. The rest, as they say, is history...

And yet, much as the reader may be overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of Marcus' physical grandeur - augmented by a rigorous daily exercise regime, and cultivated by some of the world's finest photographers and stylists - the book ponders his modeling triumphs whilst revealing virtually nothing about Marcus the MAN. He describes himself as an ordinary guy in an extraordinary position, whose personal life amounts to little more than an endless round of photo-shoots and modeling assignments. And that's it, really. If there's more to Marcus than meets the eye, he isn't telling. Those who complain about our culture's tendency to define others simply by their appearance will find no reassurances here, with a subject who positively encourages us to view him at face value, a blank page on which we're allowed to write our wildest, raunchiest fantasies. In this case, it's more than enough. And while some of us still prefer his beefcake/calendar work, "New Rules" ultimately provides a useful - though somewhat shallow - overview of Marcus' life for newcomers and devotees alike.

Favorite photos: The 'angel' pose (p. 115) taken at the Givenchy Haute Couture Alexander McQueen Show in 1997, with a near-naked Marcus framed by two enormous feathered wings which emphasize and encapsulate the transcendent nature of his physical perfection. And Barry King's 1989 snapshot of Marcus (p. 38) rollerblading on Venice Beach whilst clad in little more than tight shorts and a bandanna, drawing our attention to the strong line of his body, his long legs and heavy chest, a vision of incomparable beauty. Like all the best pin-ups, Marcus Schenkenberg is naked even when fully clothed, inviting all-too-predictable comparisons with the likes of Michelangelo's David, amongst various other exalted works of art. Which isn't too far-fetched when you think about it. I mean, just LOOK at the guy! Who could possibly resist the temptation of such voluptuous splendor?...

This book is a must for all fans of Marcus Schenkenberg. He is so indcredibly good looking. I love his look, his body. He is great. And all the pictures inside are great, too. I hope there will be a second one. Hopefully, soon.

Full of photos dating back to his discovery while rollerskating in a teensy pair of pink shorts, this book will satisfy every possible hunger that relates to Marcus. Something you won't see on The Justice Leauge!.......2004-07-14

Easily one of the greatest storylines next to Avengers Forever and the Storyline of Final Fantasy VIII in my opinion of course. Only one week after the failed Utopia Project, The Squadron Supreme is visited by a foe greater than Ultimecia and Immortus combined...The Nth Man. No not that pathetic Ninja named John Doe. Having consumed seven whole realities Thomas Lightner finds himself in The Squadron's Universe: Earth-S and continues his mad quest of hunger. The Squadron and their greatest foes head into space to attack Lightner. However things don't go as they planned when Lightner vanquishes Professor Imam, Inertia and even a version of Overmind from the future with but a thought and a little light show here and there. This epic showcases on how The Squadron must face this "Crisis from Infinite Earths" on a "Zero Hour" of Destruction and the pain they must deal with as all whom they know and love fall dead around them. This Graphic Novel set the course for the storyline presented in Avengers vol.3 #5-6 and The Squadron Supreme/Avengers Annual of 1998.

Powerful.......2000-10-20

Squadron Supreme was Marvel's answer to the Justice League. After an incredible 12-issue mini-series (which is still available), this comic book was released as a follow-up to conclude the story line. This shorter graphic novel was incredibly powerful. The remaining members of the Squadron Supreme put their lives at stake to save their dying universe. It is an intense read. If you loved the Squadron Supreme, you must do everything you can to get your hands on this follow up story. I never cried so hard reading a comic book in my life! This is truly not to be missed.

One of the best of the genre.......2005-05-20

Recently, I've been reading a lot of the prank letter books that have been released. From Ted L. Nancy, to Paul Rosa, and others.

Wilber Winkle was one of the last in the series I picked up. To be honest, after a couple of lesser books, I thought the genre was dead. It isn't. Wilber Winkle is actually one of the best, up there with Nancy, only more serious.

The thing that is so good about this is that the letters seem more real. They aren't jokey like some of the others. So, they are taken more seriously.

And, even better, he continues his quest with several letters, even at times sending money orders to make his letter stand out (and help with researching the questions he asked).

His letters to Hershey's over several years to find out why they left out the almond in the Fifth Avenue bar are wonderful. He continues on and on, even sending Christmas greetings to them asking how their project is going.

Also, he becoomes a pen pal with Ronald McDonald himself!!

Great stuff.

I only wish there was another volume, or it was longer.

One of the funniest books ever written..........2001-02-25

I enjoyed the "Letters from a Nut" series of books. But this book is even better. The author not only writes with his strange requests/questions, but he continues to reply over and over. It's almost unbelieveable how some of his letters are responded to. He puts a lot of thought into his letters, making them outright hilarious. Letter's from a Nut is good, but Wilber Winkle is great!

Intelligent and laugh-out-loud funny.......2000-11-17

One of the better books of this genre and suprisingly intelligent and witty. Winkle tackles targets that legitmately annoy him (and us, his readers) and doesn't give up until he gets a satisfactory resolution to his complaints. For some authors in this genre, simply getting an answer to a stupid letter is the punchline. Not so for Winkle, who demands real answers to his complaints. It's his targets' own unwillingness to co-operate that makes them look foolish (and reveals their real attitude toward consumers) and this provides much of the humor for the book.

This is less a "prank" letter book than it is a manual on the art of effective consumer complaining, but this doesn't detract at all from its laugh-out-loud humor. Winkle is an odd and wonderful mixture of consumer crusader and merry prankster.

This book is great. I'm still laughing. This one is on my highly recommended list. I started reading it at 6:00 in the evening and didn't put it down until it was complete, around 2:00. I went back and re-read several of the letters. Visualizing the look on some of the adressees faces was really funny. Can you image what some of these people must have thought?

i like how jones' book started off, contextualizing the plot of 'night of the hunter' in american history. and i appreciated some of the trivia and various insights in to the process of making this wonderful, wonderful film. but the book was not nearly as magical for me in the end.

i think it may be because there are writers that do this and are much more clever at it like sam staggs.

oh well, i bought it and i ain't giving it away!

Preston Neal Jones has written the best book ever about the production of a particular movie, "Heaven and Hell To Play With," which treats the making of Charles Laughton's neo-D. W. Griffith "The Night of the Hunter." Not only is his book the best of its general category but also it represents an almost-unique category of its own, which is to say that it is the story of a movie production told almost entirely in the words of those who participated in that production. It is built from detailed oral history, and the author, Mr. Jones, is almost entirely absent from the narrative. It is a great book that I read in one day. You just can't put it down. (Now, if only we could have a sumptuous re-recording of Walter Schumann's carefully crafted score. The state of movie music today would be far better if directors were willing to bring composers into their projects early in the process as Laughton did. Schumann was in on "The Night of the Hunter" almost from the beginning, and its shows in the results) GET THIS BOOK NOW !

A Compelling Look at What Film Histories Can Be.......2006-02-26

Heaven & Hell To Play With: The Filming of The Night of the Hunter by Preston Neal Jones is by no means a trivial read, and it is its sheer density that makes it so special. Jones compiled numerous interviews and basically provides an oral history of what many consider a compelling masterpiece, offering as thorough a history as one could ask for. Yes, there is much detail here, and perhaps those not familiar with Laughton's film (or fond of it) may be overwhelmed, but consider for a moment what you have here.

How many of us dream of actually observing the creation and production of a favorite film? Jones provides just that -- even without interviews from Laughton or the principal performers (save Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish), we see the film of Davis Grubb's novel being imagined, created, and released as described by those who were there, including Davis Grubb. Where a director's commentary on a DVD is typically a trifle, providing some interesting notes and observations limited by the film's running time, this book is all about immersion -- you almost feel you are there, and you're invited to stay for awhile. Jones rarely intrudes upon the first person accounts of the participants, and when he does, it's usually to point out potential discrepancies between remembered versions of events.

The "loose" narrative of oral history, any oral history, fills in an amazing amount of detail by accident, rather than by authorial intent, and this book leaves one feeling completely satisfied (or for those with shorter attention spans on the subject, perhaps a bit full) on a subject that seemed lost -- that we're seeing this book in 2002, nearly two generations separated from the film's creation, shows us the result of determined and dedicated sleuthing. This book can't have been easy to write or compile.

As presented, the book doesn't read like a typical film history, but more like an eyewitness account, and of course, that's what it is. If only more film books like this existed -- the greatest accomplishment of this book is not that you can walk away with facts -- it's that you can walk away feeling not only like you were there, but that you actually knew the participants, and could see where the social fabric between the personalities grew taut and relaxed at key points in the narrative.

Hats off to Jones -- a fine job, and one would hope, as novel in its execution as the film it describes, that will hopefully inspire imitation. Fans of the film are decidedly in your debt.

Probably more than you want to know.......2005-12-13

A book only for those people who have seen, and loved, "Night of the Hunter." Offers incredible, detailed insights not only into the making of the film, but also, into the creative process of Charles Laughton (what an incredible shame that this was the only film he directed). What would make the book better? Better editing (a fifth of the book's text could easily be cut) and more critiques from the time of the movie's release, to get into the mindset of that period (because it's mind-boggling that this was a flop when it came out).

Dazzling Stained Glass Images.......2000-05-10

The designs in this coloring book are derived from the best of mediaeval stained glass, starting with the oldest surviving example of complete windows in Augsburg Cathedral, dating from the late eleventh century. Ed Sibbett has reproduced clearly and faithfully selected panels of windows. You may be inspired to carry out further research in order to discover the full beauty of these works of art. Teachers would find this book a valuable resource lessons for art, history and religion. Classroom windows covered with these images would dazzle!

Excellent resource for the classroom!.......2000-05-05

I've used this book in my 7th grade Middle Ages project with great success. The images in the book are literally jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but not too hard for students to use in making larger "windows." The paper is heavy-duty, can be easly removed from the book and taped to an overhead for tracing. They should last a long time. The only "problems" are that the pictures aren't numbered so matching them to the source list at the back of the book is tricky - I just number them myself before cutting out. Also, I would have liked to see a sturdier cover for the pages. Once cut out, they tend to get bent. If you want kids to work on research with a project to enhance their papers, this is a good source or if you have kids whose main focus is on a project, this book is invaluable.

A little dull, a little obvious.......2006-08-31

I've read another book on flipping (Find It, Fix It, Flip It!: Make Millions in Real Estate--One House at a Time by Michael Corbett), and though that book was slightly gimmicky, at least it was entertaining.

This book is slightly dull, and a lot of the suggestions are sort of obvious. I have not gotten completely through the book- so maybe there is some saving grace in there- however I'm having a hard time picking it up. So far I recommend my previous read more.

The information was def. worthwhile.... it provided some very needed tips. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of flipping houses.. but dont stop with this one.. no one source of information is the know all of everything.. look everywhere.. books, seminars, internet..

My husband (a carpenter) and I were looking to get into buying houses that needed work, rehabbing them, and re-selling them to make a profit. We checked out am armful of books from the public library -- most of them were mainly on buying property to rehab and rent out. This book was just what we were looking for!

It is very helpful on finding the right property, evaluating the property (we used the "property profile sheet" for all the houses we were seriously intererested in); and making and executing a fix-up plan. We got an accepted offer on our first house yesterday, and I am back on Amazon today to buy the book -- I can't renew it anymore from our library!!!

P.S. I'm updating my review after we sold the house -- we bought the house for $68,000 and sold it for $109,000. When you subtract fix-up and closing costs, our net profit was $20,000. Not bad for eight weeks of work! This book helped a lot!

Too general and basic.......2005-02-02

This book is too general and basic for my needs. I don't think I'm that smart, but I didn't need to buy the book to get most of this info. I knew it already. Guess I expected a lot more.
