This book accompanied an exhibition at the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst und Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt am Main in 2002: reading this enthralling book makes one wish that the exhibition had traveled!

James Bradburne is the primary author of this treatise on the vital body substance Blood - a fluid that has challenged the imagination of philosophers, scientists, clergy and artists for centuries. Beginning with the paintings from the Middle Ages preoccupied with the blood of Christ as a symbol for both death and life, this survey is wonderfully illustrated with high quality reproductions of paintings, etchings, sculpture from the past down to contemporary art of video and installation performances that focus on blood as the single most important source of life, death, sickness, health, miracles, power, domination and subjugation.

Not always for the faint of heart, Bradburne includes images of Gunther Brus in his self-mutilation performances, drawings of the elements of blood, references to blood as the transmitter of AIDS and other past and present atrocities. The spectrum of the topic extends from the art houses and cathedrals to the media and cartoons and is fairly complete in the resonance it creates in the dichotomy of positive and negative.

Would that there were more exhibitions of this quality and bravery! But what remains is a book that makes for fascinating reading and looking, and more than that an isolated exhibition cannot hope for as an extended life! Grady Harp, March 05

Gianni Versace, a Fashion Genuis.......2002-06-11

Gianni Versace was a designer who loved to push the envelope. His clothes were a mixture of extremes: sexy, sleazy, colorful, tacky, and elegant. One adjective you'd never find in a sentence with the word Versace is "boring." His clothes commanded--and often got--attention, which is why he was such a favorite among celebrities such as Madonna, Elton John, Liz Hurley, Courtney Love, Prince, Jon Bon Jovi and even Princess Diana. This book is a fabulous, eye-opening collection of vivid photographs of models and rock stars in Versace: from Prince to the members of British boy band Take That. Some outfits are more releaving than others, but they're all unmistakably Versace. Diana herself is also included in the book, along with a few words of praise for the designer. Tragically, Versace was murdered in the summer of 1997, but his spirit and influence live on. This book comes highly recommended. Drop it on your coffeetable, and your guests won't want to put it down.

Fantastic photography in another large book from Versace. This book captures the 'rock chic' glamourama which the late Versace excelled at creating. The association between 'Rock and Roll', and art is full indulged here creating a empirical illusion to the Versace dynasty. The glossy presentation of the images also adds to an overall feeling of luxury. The only reason I have not given this book the top rating is for its inclusion of Elton John - who makes me sick. So what if its expensive, luxuries like this don't come cheap. ciao,

This amazing movie should be shared with all friends and family. I was truly "Spirited Away" by the outstanding characters and wonderful setting. A touching story that you will want to watch over and over again.

Amazing Movie, good book.......2003-04-07

We saw this movie a couple of times in the theater, and plan on buying the DVD when it comes out this month. In the meantime, we came across this book at the bookstore, and got it for our daughter. As is typical of books that are put together from children's films, the writing is a bit simple and assumes that you know the story from the film. If you haven't seen the film, the book is a bit choppy. That having been said, it was worth the price of the book to have the beautiful pictures in a book, so that we could look at them whenever we want to. It is very nice to have this book to enjoy.

average predictable story, the art is nice. this installment is better than part 2, which is a total mess. overall if you are a captain america fan you'll probably hate this for many reasons, if you are a casual comics fan you might think its ok, if you read a lot of comics and are tired of the same overused garbage from the big two publishers you'll hate this.

Brubaker Restores My Faith in the Comic Medium.......2007-01-10

I had bailed out on the comic scene for good following High School, although I continued to pick up Jeff Smith's "Bone", since I knew it was a finite series, so I wouldn't have to be chained to it forever. Well, the day came and the series ended, and quite frankly, I missed my bi-monthly excursions to the comic shop. I missed the smell of paper. I even dreamed about it.

So I was on my Honeymoon in the frozen north when I stopped into a Supermarket and happened to glance at issue #1 of Captain America written by Ed Brubaker. I've never been a fan of Cap or his Avenger buddies. Just a bunch of Government tools. But this issue rocked. The art was really great and when I sat down and read it I found a story I could really dig to. So I was hooked, and I count each new issue as another month of marriage. Since then, I've also opened the door to Ed Brubaker's Daredevil too. Daredevil was my favorite growing up, so I'm glad to have him back in my life.

Writing and art are equally sublime. The perfect creative team. The story is fresh and up to date. Flashbacks to WWII were an added thrill. Real gritty storytelling. This Ed Brubaker knows what he's doing.

I'm with this book for the long haul, and I am grateful to know that each month I have this marvelous little treat to look forward to. EXCELSIOR!

Excellent Reboot for Captain America.......2006-12-09

This is a great Captian America story. As a reboot on his origin, it doesn't try to start at the very beginning. It takes almost all the current elements and lines them up for a total change of perspective. We know who the Red Skull is, we know who Bucky is, we know who Nomad is, we know who Nick Fury and SHEILD is...all of them come together in the story and are essential in changing Cap's life in many ways.

Brubaker does a great service to fans and newcomers alike, giving us a complex story that delivers all that we know with an intelligent refocus. Cap is a different person, making his political views very clear in many cases, most of which were formed during the war by all the fighting as well as the inspirational stories he experienced.

The artwork is outstanding. Cap looks real, not so much the stoic figure that stood an easy 6'5" as a vision of Patriotism. He's suffering a bit, but underneath you know he still believes in the basic principles of the Red, White and Blue, and not the political quagmire that has clouded the views of it's people.

In the story, he is called to help look into the death of a character that has been a part of his life since the war, the Red Skull. As pieces of the puzzle are found he discovers that someone is manipulating his thoughts and memories, that there is greater mystery than the death of an old enemy. He finds inconsistencies in his thoughts and recollections, so much so it affects his fighting ability and concentration.

As the terrorist aspect grows more dangerous and the plot expands, Cap comes closer to the truth, and closer to one of the most shocking revelations of his life.

Dr. Seger has done it again, this time writing an intelligent look at women in the film industry. She points out that women have made great strides in gaining power and authority in the entertainment industry. Dr. Seger also reminds readers that women still have a long way to go in order to command respect, but we're getting there day by day. Highly recommended for anyone (of either gender) to learn about how the industry deals with gender issues.

PLACES, A TRAVEL GUID FOR MUSIC AND ART LOVERS.......2000-08-06

Places stylishly mixes travel observations, historical essays and remembered conversations. I read it nearly without stopping and still wished that there were five of six hundred pages to go. So be warned: Places is so good that it won't last a quiet weekend, let alone a two-week family holiday at the beach. Of course, you could always bring along Stravinsky: Chrinicle of a Friendship, Current Convictions, The Moment of Existence or any of Craft's other half dozen or so books. If you like his meticulous and well-stocked mind as much as I do, you'll eventually want to read everything he's written.

Good, but bring a dictionary.......2000-08-02

A good read to be sure, and it will certainly make you want to see more of the world. I dusted off my passport before making it halfway through the book. However, I also had to dust off my trusty unabridged dictionary. Craft's diction is superb, but I found plenty of occasions to have to turn to the dictionary for words that have fallen from the common vernacular. Is it worth reading? Absolutely, his travels are only heightened by the research he has put in on the locales discussed in the book. You may just read through the entire thing in a sitting, only pausing to look up those delightful (if rarely used) words.

Not worth fifteen dollars for.......2003-06-26

Sure you COULD pick up this guide, but why would you want to? They cover all the VR missions and Snake tails and all the bonus stuff that MGS2 substance has to offer but that's all you get from this guide. Should you buy MGS2 substance on PS2 and you've never played the original SOL package and you want help for the main storyline you'd have to go out and buy TWO guides if its the PS2 version you're getting. That is, if you want the full walkthrough for the adventure. Otherwise you'll have to go and purchase the Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Official Strategy Guide.

Yeah, this guide covers all the extras in a nice easy to read way, but if you went through the story of the original MGS2 and you're looking for a guide to that, you'll end up purchasing two guides. My solution to this, go out and buy the XBOX version of this guide. Its the exact same AND it covers the whole story mode walkthrough. That way you'll only spend fifteen dollars rather than blowing off thirty.

I cant believe that I went through college without taking business or econ classes (except for political economy). This is a way for me to catch up.
I like this book because it is easy to read and understand. So easy even an elementary school kid could understand....ok maybe junior high.
Eventually I would hope to read the Intelligent Investor.

As many have said in their reviews, this is a great starting point for those new to investing and financial markets. In fact, it's the best I've ever found and I've looked a lot. The simple, plain English explanations are what makes this book stand out. For the nuances and more detailed information regarding the topics in the book, look to a textbook from a college finance class. But for the person who knows very little, start with this.

If you are new to investing and need a simple primer, read this book. It's well organized and written. Those that have invested for a while will find this book simplistic. Nevertheless, I think every beginning investor should get a copy and read it.

There is an alternative........2007-08-20

WSJ Guide to Money is out of print. That is why the cost has gone through the roof. Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing (Standard & Poor) The Standard and Poors Guide to Money is by the same authors and is even a year more current. Take a look at the cover you can even see that it is the same book and that all that was done is WSJ in the title is changed to "Standard and Poors Guide to Money and Investing". Same book by the same author. The only difference is that is is in print so the price is reasonable.

Although this isn't the largest book in the world, I really enjoyed reading it. I thought that I was pretty savvy as far as the way things worked, but this book definitely enlightened me. I also appreciated the pictures that made things clearer.

If you're a beginner, interested in investing, this is a very decent primer to start with. Buy it with Eric Tyson's Investing for Dummies, and you'll be fully set!

I think this book did a great job in helping me understand the universe of money and investing beyong the scope of stock. I have been trading for 1 year and wanted to buy a small book that gave me a general education on the subject. Although much more can be written on each topic covered it is good for beginning to understand the whole picture.
