    Book Description

Late nineteenth-century Britain experienced an explosion of interest in sculpture. Sculptors of the “New Sculpture” movement sought a new direction and a modern idiom for their art. This book analyzes for the first time the art-theoretical concerns of the late-Victorian sculptors, focusing on their attitudes toward representation of the human body. David J. Getsy uncovers a previously unrecognized sophistication in the New Sculpture through close study of works by key figures in the movement: Frederic Leighton, Alfred Gilbert, Hamo Thornycroft, Edward Onslow Ford, and James Havard Thomas.

These artists sought to activate and animate the conventional format of the ideal statue so that it would convincingly stand in for both a living body and an ideal image. Getsy demonstrates the conceptual complexity of the New Sculptors and places their concerns within the larger framework of modern sculpture.

      4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Patterns.......2001-01-30

This book is really neat, with beautiful photos of the sweaters. Lots of colorwork, so you can use up your stash.

My only complaint is that there are no squares of the colors used near the patterns, so that it makes it difficult to match colors--you have to use the photos if you can't afford to buy the yarn used in the book, and yarn companies are always adding and dropping colors so color squares would help a great deal.

The sweaters have lots of colors in each row, so if you can knit backwards it is a big help. There are also designs for babies in here, as well as one mens' sweater.

This book needs to be in print again--even if you don't feel like doing an entire sweater, worked in worsted weight yarns you could make some nice pillows or afghan squares with these designs.

5 out of 5 stars more fun from Rumiko Takahashi.......2004-06-16

I love the Ranma 1/2 series - actually, I love most things that Rumiko Takahashi has created. If you haven't read any of this series before, you should know that Ranma changes into a girl when splashed with cold water. His father, on the other hand, changes into a panda. A lot of this is explained just before the story begins, in a "the story thus far" section and a "cast of characters section." Although, as usual, I believe that it's always a good idea to know something about a series before jumping into it at a later point (especially this far into the series), I don't think that this volume will be too hard to understand if you've never read any Ranma 1/2 before. The two explanation sections to a fairly good, if brief, job, and, once yet get past the beginning of book, there's another story that's pretty self-contained. Since I haven't read the previous volume, the beginning of the book, which is continuation of a fight between Ranma, Ryoga, Mousse, and a trio of martial artists, made me feel a little lost. After that, however, come two stories that are unrelated to this beginning part. In the first, Ranma has to deal with a new teacher, who is known for her ability to deal with problem students. This teacher can use an unbeatable technique, which there is only one very awkward way to defeat. In the second story, Akane wants to investigate something that happened in her past. Only the first story is actually finished in this volume. For the rest of the second story, I think you have to get the next volume.

If you're looking for humorous manga, I really recommend Rumiko Takahashi. She does wonderful work and has a very odd and wacky sense of humor. Then you, too, can get looked at oddly whenever you try to explain this series to someone. :o)

                  5 out of 5 stars Ranma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-12-18

                  THIS IS COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I MEAN RUMIKO TAKAHASHI DID THE IMPOSSIBLE MAKE A TEACHER LOOK ATRACTIVE AND STRONG AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! What I don`t like is Herb freak beatin up Ranma! I reccomend this book to anyone who has a quirky sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Will Ranma lose Akane's love??.......2003-12-16

This was by far one of the best Ranma storylines in the entire manga. No, sorry, one of the most ROMANTIC. Akane meets Shinnosuke, a forgetful boy who once saved her life, and he immediately falls for her. In the meantime, Ranma goes looking for Akane, only to find her with another guy!!! Is this really the end of their relationship??

NOT. But anyways, I'm reeeeeaaally bad at summaries. If you've never seen Ranma jealous, here's an eye-opener. "If you're happy Akane, then Ok, but tell me one thing. Tell me right now why you're choosing him instead of me!" (I roughly translated this from the Italian version).

                  BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars School never cost so much.......2003-10-14

This volume was great!! I loved it!!
Finishing off where volume 22 ended it captures your attention once again by introducing Hinako who uses the 5 yen and up attack, taught to her when she was young. Sucking 'delinquints' aura so they can't be bad is her ultimate tequnique thus making her into an attractive woman useing their energy.
It was well, drawn, well written and the ending introduced yet another adventure, Shinosuuke!
I recommend it to any Rumiko Takahashi fan!

5 out of 5 stars Much better than the anime here........2003-09-12

#23 starts out with finishing the fight between Ranma & Prince Herb.
Then Miss Hinako appears, with a new technique for Ranma to have to beat.
Ending with Akane running off to fight some monsters, in a place from a nearly forgotten vacation.
The last two stories are seen in the OAVs.

                    Book Description

It's a dangerous world out there, and knowing how to protect yourself against would-be assailants is a skill that should be in every girl's bag of tricks. Get your kicks with a book that teaches self-defense -- and self-esteem.
As movies like Kill Bill, Tomb Raider, and Charlie's Angels have demonstrated, the martial arts aren t just for boys anymore. Kung Fu for Girls is a funky, handbag-sized book of self-defense techniques that will get you out of any tight spot.
With step-by-step instructions and dynamic illustrations, martial arts trainer Simon Harrison shows how every part of your body -- hands, hips, knees, elbows, even your butt! -- can be used to fend off potential attackers. From palm strikes to slap blocks to stiletto stomps, it's full of useful techniques for college students, city dwellers, and butt-kicking "girls" of all ages.

                    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!! .......2006-11-16

What more can I say, this is a small, useful and informative book with pictures, guides, (and humor) to teach you how to use some simple techniques (and items) to help prevent attackers from harming you anywhere.
It illistrates techniques that will help you if you are standing, sitting, or even have fallen asleep on the subway. Guides you through blocking attacks from all sides. As the book points out as well - having confidence in yourself and a good amount of self esteem combined with these moves you're chances of being targetted will dramatically decrease.
If you can't sign up for a class I'd recommend all women and girls at least take the time to go through this book and PRACTICE the techniques with friends!

5 out of 5 stars Self defense with style, truly!.......2005-05-05

The title is a misnomer; it's not Kung Fu, it's women's self defense. You can tell the difference because Kung Fu doesn't involve biting people's noses or end every kata with a groin strike. Women's self defense teaches you to use moves that are effective but unlikely to injure you when you use them, since it has to work even for people who are a bit out of shape. It warns you that punches and high kicks are one of those things that are more likely to injure you than your opponent, so only use open-palm strikes and low kicks. The subtitle "self defense with style" is more apt, because this book oozes style!

It'd fit in nicely with the "Bad Girls" book series... despite having very different design, they fit together so well it's almost like they were made for each other. It might even fit in certain magazines for young women, some of which have similar graphic design to this.

The artwork is realistic but nicely stylized, vectorized. It's a slender little book, but packed with ideas, and with pictures on every page.

It's also presented with a great deal of humor, and uses a lot of mental images ("now stick out your elbows like a chicken") that make it more memorable. Lots of all-around advice, even some things indirectly related to self defense, such as maintaining an attitude that discourages attackers. (Muggers will go for the distracted, nervous person in constricting clothing.) Excellent, even as self-defense books go. (I've read quite a few. Some of them were so dense and text-oriented that I couldn't keep interested, even though I knew they were important, or I couldn't visualize what they were describing.)

The fact that it has so many pictures, humor, mnemotics, all-around advice while being small and chic increases the likelihood that people will read it. It's very effective that way. It's not like that just to look pretty.

                    People who should read this:
~ All females. The world would be a better place if all women were empowered with knowledge of self-defense; it would save lives.
~ People who enjoy graphic design, anime, and manga.

People who probably don't want to read this:
~ All males who prize their family jewels. I mean, the book is great, you can read it if you want, and you'd probably benefit by it, but you'll be wincing a lot. Women's self defense is designed to treat that as a convenient "off" button.
~ People who have some problem with reading white text on an orange background. It's stylish, but it kind of stings. The book's worth it anyway, in my opinion.

Conditions which befit the reading of this book:

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive self defense that works!.......2005-04-05

I bought this book thinking it would help me defend myself in case of emergency. It does more than that! This little book teaches you how to block attacks, where to strike back and how to defend yourself in a knife attack. Savvy, smart and really honest, this book can help you avoid being raped or injured if you or a friend is being attacked.

Being attacked is a big threat, especially if your petite like me. After reading and practicing the moves in this book, I feel comfortable that I would know how to react in the case that I was attacked, even though I am on the smaller side.

Nothing compares to taking a real class, but this book will help in case of emergency.

                    Book Description

"Tough, smart, superbly engaging, The Material Ghost is a terrific book." -- Edward W. Said

In The Material Ghost, Gilberto Perez draws on his lifelong love of the movies as well as his work as a film scholar to write a lively, wide-ranging, penetrating study of films and filmmakers and the nature of the art form. For Perez, film is complex and richly contradictory, lifelike and dreamlike at once, a peculiar mix of reality and imagination. "The images on the screen," he writes, "carry in them something of the world itself, something material, and yet something transposed, transformed into another world: the material ghost."

"Dazzling... The sheer intelligence at work in these lucid pages is exhilarating." -- Alfred Guzzetti, Boston Book Review

"A pleasure. Gilberto Perez is one of the smartest film critics writing anywhere." -- Jonathan Rosenbaum

"Strikes an ideal balance between insightful analysis and graceful writing... A model of thoughtful criticism." -- David Sterritt, Christian Science Monitor

"Brilliantly polemical in his critique of cynical reason ('the official philosophy of late capitalism'), no less passionate in defending the truth-value of cinema, Perez seems to be the clearest heir to the great humanist critic André Bazin." -- Sight & Sound

"The chapters on Keaton and Renoir are stunning, full of perceptive remarks; the chapter on Godard is a persuasive rehabilitation; none of the chapters is without memorable insights." -- Michael Wood, London Review of Books

"Gilberto Perez's ambitious, abundant, and cultivated book--the fruit of decades of thinking and teaching -- accompanies readers on a journey of discovery into the wonder of film." -- Stanley Cavell

"Few books of film criticism in the past twenty-five years have been so enjoyable or instructive... [Perez] has excellent things to say about authorship, about documentaries, about popular genres, about cinematic point of view and narrative technique, about actors, and above all about camera style... He makes us want to look once more at the remarkable pictures he discusses." -- James Naremore, Cineaste

What a breath of fresh air this book is. Perez manages to tread the fine line between theory and practise with grace. A great survey of filmmakers and film theory alike. Gilberto Perez' personal style makes for a very acessible text, and he doesn't shy away from 'unpopular' rejections of theory he disagrees with. An extremely valuable resource for students of film that helps to make sense of the often complicated threads of film theory.

                    5 out of 5 stars Uncanny Critique.......1999-12-01

GHilberto Perez has been the country's foremost if neglected film critic for a number of years now. For years, his film and fiction reviews in such a strange place as the usually staid if not conservative Hudson Review enlivened that venue and revitalized it. His reviews now for the Yale Review arew extraordinary in their stylish elegance, their wit, and their moral verve, if one can employ that seemingly oxymoronic phrase. Perez has a scope that is unusually large, and one feels, at once, assured that his attention to movies is neither escapist nor propagandistic. He eschews the reductionism of most theoretical work done today, and as a matter of fact makes the most subtle theoretical p[erspective against false theory. This does not in any way mean, as some might guess, that he is antagonistic to theory. He seems to hate stupidity most of all, and this entitles him to be called a poet among film critics. His love of the particular is such that his pobservations on shots, sequences, and film form at its most atomic or fleeting is rendered in bold, concrete and realized phrases. HYe is the only film critic alive today who can make a plot seem to have moral and visual diemsnions.By this I mean, he is never boring and he is always honest.

Perez's scope is seen in the very movies he underlines. He does not atte,mp[t to be falsely synoptic, but there is a sweep in him from the most experimental shadows of Sytraub to the German new wave and the American cowboy genre. I think it is not for nothing that he is able to embrace these phenomena without Procrustean dogmatics. Perez was raised in Cuba, and he recounts his love for cinema as a child. He was also a prodicigous cartoonist, and he has never lost his eagerness to caricature silly positions. He also has a love, in the broadest sense, for representation itself, and his college years were spent with the love of physics and science. I think his argumentation gains from his knowledge of science and his love of truth-telling. He has, from Cuba and his own "exile" in America, a perspective that seems more international than most. He is able to have a de;lectation for Amertican and German and New Wave cinema that never strikes one as provincial. But he has enough of what he calls, imn relation to Antonioni, the point of view of the stranger,m to make his readings fresh and strange, de-=automotized, as it were. His style is never pompous, but it is meant, uneerringly, to convince, even to conquer, and it does. He is aggressive in tirade and can destroy weakened critics of jargon and the academy./ This is not to say that he is not learned, and he does indeed represemnt for me the best in the academy as it tries to right itself or inflect itself with pluralist radiance. I would say that in his generaytoion he is the person least deformed by the false perspectives offered to all of us. And yet he has engulfed and digested and synthesized as much of semiotics and the best of continental theory.

I would add that for me, Perez succeeds because he has a combination of practical and theoretical criticism that makes him the best classroom model for prose. Do have your students buy this book at any levcel. Let the students at the udnergraduate level stretch a bit and enjoy his style. Let the graduate students realize what they are missing in their bound platiturfdes and dogmatics. And for all, the book should be a starting-point for debate and discussion. I think the best chapters are already classics: the essaays on Kirostami, Godard and Antonioni, for example, cannot be bettered in the literature as I know it. This book is not a simple volume but really a life's summa and should be taken extremely seriously. Of the l00 rewcent books on film that I have read in the last two decades, there is nothing that approaches this book. I would say again that it is arguably the best for its sanity and breadth, but it not merely "balanced" or Johnsonian. Perez has been willing to talke risks both in his select9ons and his deletions. He now demands a stremnuous reader, a creative reader. Will he get it? The health of film studies depends partly on that answer.

Easily a superb continuation of a great series of challenging and extremely clever crossword puzzles. The handy spiral binding is great for working on each individual puzzle. You don't need a working knowledge of wall street, although the themes are often "financial". However, these are strictly tounge in cheek and I'm amazed at the ingenious constructions of the individual puzzles. Highly recommended. Work in pencil lightly and you will be able to erase the answers and repeat the experience in a few years [when you'll have forgotten everything].

                          Book Description

This book will teach you how to create a strong mentor/mentee relationship, and how to grow from that partnership. You will learn what mentors can offer you, ten reasons to become a mentee, how mentoring can help you manage your self-development, and how to pick a mentor. Mentoring programs have become prominent in many organizations, especially in today's highly technical environment. Developing a strong mentor relationship is beneficial to the mentor, the mentee, and the organization. Some of the many benefits of being mentored are self and career development, new perspective and insights into organizational culture, and performance improvement and talent development.

4 out of 5 stars Mentor: Tutor or Coach?.......2000-07-06

The original meaning of mentor was defined by the role that Mentor (a friend of Odysseus) played in educating Telemachus (Odysseus's son) while Odysseus was away on the Odyssey. The dictionary also mentions definitions of a trusted counselor or guide, tutor, or coach.

This book clearly is about mentoring as coaching in the business rather than the sports sense. Mr. Shea suggests that mentoring has more intervention than counseling or short-term teaching assignments, because it goes beyond the merely obligatory. As such, I think the book's concept falls short of the full potential to mentor or to be mentored. In particular, the book suggests not giving advice beyond posing questions to focus the learner's attention. I think that many people will construe that advice too narrowly and will miss the chance to tell stories from their own experience that are relevant to the mentee's (his word, not mine) needs. That is why I graded the book down one star.

In every other way, the book is very well done. Having been helped by many outstanding mentors over the years, I was interested to see how one should go about playing that role oneself. I found what I was looking for here.

Some may find the material a little on the light side about the special issues associated with mentoring people of the opposite sex, of vastly different ages, and different cultural backgrounds. But the book does have a sound process for being sure that the mentor and mentee share with one another what their objectives are, and continue to communicate with each other about how it is going. That should solve most problems. The book also has good material on how to interpret the words, emotions, and body language that people exhibit, and how to probe for unexpressed information. That should deal with much of the rest.

The book is designed to serve those who wish to learn how to assist in the development of other people, to suggest behavior that mentors should adopt and avoid, and to show how mentoring works in today's workplace.

The chapters cover (1) mentoring as an art (2)whether mentoring is for you? (3) understanding mentee's needs (4) positive behavior (5) behavior to avoid (6) mentor/mentee gains (7) special situations and (8) a brief summary.

Some of the book's strengths include lots of self-diagnostic questions, case studies with more questions attached, and a general background on the popularity of mentoring (leaders today see it as a way to fill in the gaps on their company's training programs). There is also a self-assessment tool available to you by toll-free call.

For those who have not had much mentoring, this book will be a real eye-opener. For those that have, it will be an encouragement to become involved as a mentor.
