This wonderful collection of paperdolls illustrated by Tom Tierney is a lovely addition to any Carmen Miranda fans collection. The "Lady in the Tutti Fruitti Hat" is wonderfully memoralized in this book with 31 of her most colorful, spectacular and outrageous costumes from the "Brazilizan Bombshells" Hollywood films from the 1940s. One of the most recognizable popular icons of the World War II era and a beloved figure to her Brazilian homeland, this book also includes a short biography and filmography. If you are a movie buff, a costume designer or a new fan of Carmen's you will be delighted with the collection and accuracy of these drawings.

Dynamic Fashion Poses and Compositions from Magazines.......2001-01-24
Before discussing this book, let me caution readers that the book contains many examples of female nudes, a number of which are in overt sexual situations. This book would be at least "R" rated if it were a movie. Treat it accordingly. I saw nothing that was not in good taste, but people who wish to avoid such images should be forewarned. When originally published, some of these images were considered quite controversial.
The strength of this book is Helmut Newton's outstanding fashion photography. The weakness is that it is displayed in facsimiles from the magazines rather than as a collection of perfectly reproduced photographs. This approach allows you to see how the photographs work with the layouts and designs. Also, the poses and compositions (both strengths of Newton's) are very clear for your consideration. The actual images themselves are often reproduced very poorly, however, sometimes looking like something that came off of a bad copier.
Unlike many of the great photographers of the 20th century who saw themselves as artists first, Newton saw himself as existing primarily through publications. "I realized very early on that the most important factor would be to be published, with a by-line . . . ." This made him see the artistic life of his work as secondary. "If any of these photographs end up on gallery or museum walls or in the possession of collectors, well all the better . . . ." Think of him as the exact opposite of Ansel Adams in how he wants his work to be expressed and remembered.
This book contains more than 500 pages of color, and black and white images from over 3000 that Newton published through 1998. The examples come mostly from French Vogue (beginning in 1961), Queen, Jardin des Modes, British Vogue, Elle, Daily Telegraph Magazine, American Vogue, Nova, Marie Claire, Deutsche Vogue, Amica, Vanity Fair, Paris Match, Allure, and Stern. Most of the examples are from the 1960s and the 1970s.
Mr. Newton's style is very lively. His models have strong personalities, and usually dominate the scene. They are also active, creating an excitement that draws attention to them. For example, he has a great talent for capturing models as they start to fall into a swimming pool.
In many cases, suble humor adds to the picture, as with the swimming pool props. I especially liked the photographs where Mr. Newton appears in the photograph through his use of mirrors. Equally amusing were the photographs where the models photographed themselves using mirrors in the same way.
As sexual mores and tastes loosened up over the years, Mr. Newton's work became more playful and free. I also thought it worked better. I enjoyed the brief essays in the book in which he explained how his relations with editors affected his assignments and the style limitations which he had to observe.
Seeing these images made me hunger for a similar book filled with luscious, perfectly-reproduced images of just these photographs on large pages of great paper. Hopefully, a publisher will indulge me in the future. Now that will be a more than five-star book!
After enjoying the poses and compositions, I suggest you think about where in your life you may be presenting yourself or your ideas in ways that steal much of their power. How can you ovecome that tendency?

My son loves the Simpsons and wasn't too into reading. I thought what better way to get him into reading than buying him books about his beloved Simpsons. Sure enough he sat down with it and read it cover to cover without getting off the couch.

Okay, I "get it", but only because I'm a white, middle-class, college-educated, PRIVILEGED woman. It's kind of "cute", but not something I find myself going to time and time again for a humorous release. If you like to feel smart, smug, and highbrow, then you'll probably get a kick out of this little book.

I never truly understood post-modernism until I read this book. In college, I read some of the post-Modernist thinkers, but somehow through humor and concise sayings, Andrew Boyd has distilled the essence of post-modernist thought. I've given it as a gift to some of my academic friends --and its the instant hit. I've been in a number of settings where people read them aloud and laugh and discuss them.

Not bad, but too much material to cover.......2005-03-25
This book is part of the Prentice Hall History of Music Series, which covers Western music from the Middle Ages through the 20th century, and also has a couple of non-Western music books.
At first glance I thought this book had the potential to be pretty specialized, but I forgot about the explosion of music in the U.S. during the 20th century. When you include "Classical" music, Jazz, Broadway, and Rock, you can imagine how diluted this book actually is.
Because of so little focus, I thought the strongest part of the book was the opening sections on music in the Colonial and Federal eras, including such composers as William Billings. Once the book approaches the 20th century, however, it really becomes too broad.
I really liked the bibliographical notes at the end of each chapter. Because Hitchcock is unable to say much of anything on each subject, the main value of this book is using as a launching point for further study. Hitchcock's bibliographical resources on where to find more information are valuable.
This book works well for the above purpose, but this book would not work well as a textbook at all, as some other books in this series have been used. Although it's not particularly engrossing, it can be used to complement your musical interests in music from the U.S.

Still doling out a few expansions at a time..........2001-07-28
Volume 5 covers Magic: The Gathering Starter Level Set for 2000, Mercadian Masques, Nemesis, and Prophecy. I wish the powers-that-be would get their act together and collect everything to date into a single volume. Instead, as usual, this volume only deals with expansions released since the previous volume of the encyclopedia.
Before launching into the expansion chapters, the usual introductory material includes a Magic timeline, including the 'for beginners' decks (e.g. Portal), the basic sets, and the expansions. This volume has been padded a little with profiles of 3 of the artists, including some alternate sketches of various cards, e.g. Grim Elf of Vengeance, which was pulled from the Unglued set as *too* grim and vengeful for that expansion.
Each set of cards covered in Volume 5, as usual, is provided with an introduction, describing any new twists added for that set (including new types of decks that came about as a result), and any famous (or infamous) cards in that set. (A blowup of the artwork of Lin Divvi, Defiant Hero appears in a sidebar for Nemesis, "This Rebel's Too Cool for School".) The introductions provide an informative overview (including descriptions of storylines that were added or updated by the release being described). (Volume 1's introductions were more entertaining, due to the much higher number of problem cards in earlier decks.)
The individual cards for each set are listed in alphabetical order; they're shown at about 3/4 actual size. The versions of Magic that included those cards (at the time of printing) are specified, as well as any errata. The card lists' images are enough to hold the attention of even a casual collector, since the flavor text is legible and the artwork is printed well.
After covering the individual sets, the book gives an overview of 1999 World Championship decks. Three pages near the end of the book discuss, respectively, Misprints & Oddities (such as the alpha-version Orcish Oriflamme with a casting cost of 1 rather than 3), Promotional Cards, and Playtest Cards. The book concludes with a "Deckbuilders Indexes" section, as in the earlier volumes of the Magic encyclopedia.
volume 5 in an essential line.......2001-02-01
Frustrated collectors have long valued these books as a way to see full-color reproductions of those cards they haven't acquired yet. Deckbuilders love the indexes found in the back of these books. As usual, the front pages have nice historical details on Magic as a whole, and each section has details on that particular set. Recommended highly.

This book is an essential piece of work for the player who wants to know the newer cards. The cards which are coming nowdays are very complex and it is important that you have a reference so that you can get an idea of what you might be facing and to use this information to get ideas on how to stop or counter it.

I thought this book was very interesting and offered some really good tips for anyone in sales, namely the emphasis on positioning yourself as THE professional.
However, I found the author's writing to be too focused on the greedy pursuit of money. To me, there is more to sales (and commercial real estate brokerage) than simply accumulating "chips", as the author calls them. Furthermore, I do not feel that there are only 3 types of people, and that all want to keep you from getting your money.
All of that said, I think this book offers valuable insight with little fluff. Every salesperson/agent should read this book, if for no other reason than to read the cool stories the author tells about his business.
A True Classic!.......2007-07-28
This is a new, rewritten version of the classic "Winning through Intimidation". And chances are, if you haven't heard of this one it's not about what you think. It's packed with solid information on how to create the right image in a prospect's or opponents mind to put you in the position of power. Ringer shows how to use their perception of you to your advantage. And it's all packaged around a fun, slightly irreverent character that lets the author poke fun at himself while teaching the reader incredibly valuable lessons.
This book is a must for anyone who ever does sales, or engages in any kind of negotiations (and who doesn't??)...Especially if you often feel like you got the short end of the stick.

I read the reviews, and thought - this might be useful. I haven't had a raise or cost of living adjustment in three years - and do not make what I was agreed to by the end of thie first year. When I have asked my boss just to cover some expenses - I get to write a letter to the compensation committee (my boss and my other boss). Yeah - I'm intimidated.
This book focuses only on this real estate broker complaining about not getting his commisions paid to him and the manuvers he did to get them. Don't bother with the book - here is his advice: Get all agreements in writing and feel blessed if you get what is in the agreement, bring a lawyer with you (fly him in your private jet like the author does) and use expensive suits and brochures to show how important you are. I finished the book just to see if there was an easter egg at the end - the joke was on me. The only advice I get take from the book is that I should have gotten it in writting, and should had an attorney come to my job interview. What I thought I was getting was strategies to keep from being cowed and how to move people to my point of view. What I got was a self rightious egoman, compaining how the world undervalued his work while he attached ugly labels to every buyer and seller he worked with.
Skip this book unless you are hateful and sell real estate.

Finally someone showed us a little reality. The jungle is full of little power games, that one always has to be prepared for. I loved this book, and think of theories often in my own life. I simply reverse it on these idiots, then succeed untouched, while everyone else has no clue that they are being intimidated.
