Book Description
An introduction to the world of post-Jungian film studies, this book redresses the dominance of Freudian theories of cinema and guides individuals through the intricacies of Jungian thought. In so doing, it provides the basis on which to construct a contemporary theory of cinema. Drawing on research into detective films and the myths of detection, Hockley weaves together psychological analysis with textual interpretation. The resulting hypothesis suggests that watching films is an intensely personal experience in which viewers, according to individual needs and desires, project and identify with films and their characters.

Godey's : A great reference guide.......2000-07-31
While it would be rare to find a Godey's book with every fashion print in it, this book gives you an excellent variety of the best dresses from Godey's. The descriptions give an idea of color mixes, fabric and decoration. This book is a great reference tool for the Lady Civil War or Mid-Victorian Reenactor or Costume Designer.
Great book....but I can't find our pictures in it!.......1999-03-08
I have 8 prints that don't appear in the book from 1865-1870. Want to find more info about my prints to include their value (at least an estimate). Pictures in the book are beautiful and pretty true to the actual work...except the real ones have a little "browner" paper. The history in the beginning is also very well done, and helpful in knowing the art. Thanks JoAnne.

A Great Snoopy Book Review.......2001-09-08
"Being A Dog Is A Full-Time Job", strips from 1989, was very funny! Join the Peanuts characters on tons of new zany adventures! For, example we met another one of Snoopy's brothers Olaf!!! Lucy enters him in an "ugly dog" contest(Isn't that just like her?). Peppermint Patty goes to summer school!! She's so mad Marcie and Charlie Brown go to camp, she sneaks away to camp!!And plus, an "old friend" of Charlie Brown's calls and wants to meet him at the mall!! Could this girl have really been an "old friend"??!! To reveal more in this delightful book would be crazy!! It's funny, because I was born in 1989!! Have fun with this one!
Dogs are Worth It... Most of the Time.......2000-05-10
This comic strips from 1993 are in my opinion... really funny! For an example of some strips, Peppermint Patty always taunts Charlie Brown to ask him if he loves her! Another year of Peanuts!
its not 5 stars!!!!!! its 50000000000000000000000 stars!!!.......1999-03-25
this book is the best book simply because charles shultz wrote it
Dog-gone funny! This reviewer gives it Five Bones!.......1999-01-28
Being a dog is a full-time job, indeed...as Snoopy's wacky antics will certainly convince you. Snoopy pulls various pranks on the adorable Peanuts children that will have you laughing until your eyes bleed! Laugh as Schroeder repels Lucy's wanton advances, and Peppermint Patty plays both sides of the ball! Fun for the entire family, even distant cousins!
SUPER!!!!!.......1998-12-30
It was exellecent. I loved it. A great all time favorite

Book Description
It's New Year's Eve in New York City. Your best friend died in September, you've been robbed twice, your girlfriend is leaving you, you've just lost your job....and the only one left to talk to is the bisexual burglar you've got tied up in the kitchen. P.S. Your Cat is Dead was an instant classic upon its initial publication in 1972, when it received widespread critical acclaim, reader devotion, and subsequently went through dozens of print-ings over the course of the next decade. The stage version was equally successful and is still staged over 200 times a year in productions around the country. Now, for the first time in a decade, Kirkwood's much-loved black humor comic novel of manners and escalating disaster returns to bewitch and beguile a new generation.
Customer Reviews:
Laughable? Perhaps........2007-07-27
I like Nora Ephron. Really. I thought When Harry Met Sally was quite a film, very cleverly written. Perhaps, however, I shouldn't hold Ms. Ephron in such high esteem that I immediately buy anything with her name on it. No, she didn't write PS Your Cat is Dead...but she did endorse it. And shame on you, Nora. This book made me laugh countless times, but never at anything the author intended to be humorous. Rather, I laughed at the sheer absurdity of the dialogue. Never have I heard people speak in the way these characters did. They were overly witty and brazen, as well as entirely one-dimensional. As much as I disliked this book, I would recommend it to self-declared "theatre types." What they saw in Rent (the film, of course) I shall never know, but they will almost certainly find that same element in PS Your Cat is Dead.
meh.......2007-07-08
I think the concept of this book might have been funny but then it took a creepy turn and was actually not funny at all. I hardly laughed through the entire book and was wondering what all the other people were reading when they gave it such good reviews...
Bizarre but very entertaining!.......2007-06-20
You have to take this book with a grain of salt. Normal guy who has alot of bad luck all at once and kind of snaps. He gets himself into some really strange but very entertaining situations that end up snowballing on him into bizarre and hilarious situations. Would definately reccomend!
Ridiculous and strange, but entertaining.......2007-03-20
I hesitate to sum this book up, for its nuances and innuendo are at once very clear and rather implied. In other words, the mark of a good book or movie is that it makes you think and wonder. This book makes you do both.
The other good part is that I wanted to finish it, sooner rather than later, and gave up some much-needed beauty sleep to do it. So there is value in this book.
This scenario involves a wretchedly unhappy and unsuccessful "sad sack" man who manages to catch, tie up, and proceed to torture the (gay) man who is attemtpting to burgle (is that a word?) his apartment for the third time. Once the tying up and pants-removing is done (don't ask,) where things go from there is anybody's guess, including an ex-girlfriend and a sexually-adventurous (maybe predatory) friend, who stop by.
I didn't realize that this book was written in 1972 until after I had finished it. Yes, there are some sorta dated views and theories, along with some philosophies that hold up well in our "modern" and "enlightened" times. Certainly the knowledge of the age of this story helps to understand it, and many of the references to music went right over my head.
It's not hard to figure out, but I felt the book was more mysterious underneath the surface than I expected, and not at all clear, for instance, about whether much of the burlgar's rantings were true, rooted in truth, or simply huge lies. I would have also liked a more definitive and clearer ending, but it's just a matter of taste. I think you can read into it whatever you want, and that was probably the author's intent.
Overall, it's mostly pretty fascinating, and certainly is worth your time. I'd stop short of saying it was hilarious (I didn't think it was; amusing, yes, but hilarious, no.) I'd also stop short of saying it was a classic, but is something I found real hard to put down once I got going.
Imagination run wild.......2007-01-10
The title put me off a bit when I first saw this book in the early 80s. But a glance at the first few pages got me hooked. Just the complete title is enough for a short story worth reading!;) Looking over the reviews, especially of the folks that came to this story in the last decade or so, made me wonder if my memory was slipping. I don't think so. I have shared this book with many people and the complete title with many more. Like the Chronicles of Narnia and The Forgotten Beasts of Eld I often keep spare copies to give away. Dated or not, it is a window to those still able to read when the world seems to be collapsing and it has helped several of us get through a tough spot. No, it doesn't solve any problems it can just let some of the pressure escape so breathing is maybe a little easier. And if the days aren't tough, it is still an amazing web of what an imagination run wild can create. It's not a major investment in either money or time so I would still recommend it happily.

Book Description
In this memoir, Irving recounts his World War I flying career, his art studies, and painting in the early 1920s--up to the moment in 1927 when Douglas Fairbanks asked him to design The Iron Mask in Hollywood. Irving vividly recounts working in Hollywood for such distinguished figures as Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and William Cameron Menzies. Upon his return to the United Kingdom, he worked on other notable films including Moonlight Sonata and George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Irving's time in Hollywood marked the end of the silent film years and this memoir depicts the effect on all those concerned, with astute and penetrating portraits of the professionals who felt this change so dramatically. Anyone with even the slightest interest in the history of filmmaking and the early characters involved with it will not want to miss this insightful account.

The inaugural volume of an exciting new annual series--Da Capo Best Music Writing. A Da Capo Original: Best-selling author Peter Guralnick offers his choices for some of the most extraordinary music writing of the year.
Welcome to the first volume in an exciting new annual series that celebrates the year's best American writing about music and its culture, as selected by one of the genre's preeminent practitioners. With thirty selections drawn from more than 100 sources, including mainstream magazines like The New Yorker, music journals like Spin, and tiny 'zines and websites where the scribes of the new century are found, this collection will be indispensable for music lovers and lovers of wonderful writing alike.
Customer Reviews:
Fine writing on all genres of music.......2003-02-07
A collection of great (and maybe not so great) essays on all genres of music, from a day in the life of Puff Daddy to Roseanne Cash remembering the songs her father sang her, to Lester Bangs' criticism, to a superb analysis of Ry Cooder's personality and music. I liked all the pieces, especially the quietly admiring piece on Cooder, the thorough look at the wild life and music of Nigerian musician Fela, and an erudite explanation of the musical legacy of gospel singer Dorothy Love Coates. It's interesting that the pieces that interested me the most were about musicians I knew the least; the best writing made me want to hear their music and appreciate it as much as these writers did. That really does make for the best of music writing.
Frank Zappa was wrong........2001-09-08
Music journalism doesn't have to be people who can't write interviewing people who can't speak for people who can't read. This volume proves it.
Editor Peter Guralnick has selected 35 pieces that are highly varied in style, subject matter, and length. One of the great things about this volume is that if you find yourself reading an article that doesn't really grab you, just move on - the next one will. With such a strong set of essays it seems almost churlish to single out individual ones of praise. David Moodie and Maureen Callahan's piece from Spin on Woodstock III "Don't Drink the Brown Water" reads like a postcard from one of the outer rings of hell. Arthur Kempton's piece from NYRB "The Lost Tycoons: The Fall of Black Empires" is a thought-provoking analysis on the rise (and fall) of Motown and the Nation of Islam. The MOTORBOOTY editor's send up of historical reenactors is hysterical and David Hadju's rumination on Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn is beautiful. And, as another reviewer noted, Eddie Dean's essay on a fanatical 78 collector is worth the price of admission alone. (And just think: us locals got to read it for free in the Washington City Paper.) On a lighter note, where else but this volume can one learn that Buck Owens sometimes includes "Play That Funky Music White Boy" and "The Macarena" in his sets (Jonny Whiteside, "Merle Haggard's Twin Oracles"), or that Steve Earle has opened for George Jones, Bob Dylan, and The Replacements (Dave Hoekstra, "Steve Earle"). I even learned a word for a sexual practice with which I was unfamiliar in a piece on a drug-addled Canadian fiddler (Rebecca Mead, "Sex, Drugs, and Fiddling").
This book is a real gem, and would make a great gift for anyone interested in music and/or writing. (I'm really glad a buddy gave it to me.) Can't go wrong on this one: there is something here for everyone.
We need to read this book--together.......2000-10-24
I hope this treasure chest doesn't get overlooked. Da Capo Press is relatively small, and the topic--essays on popular music--may seem too narrow to generate widespread interest. But believe me, this book is about us, and gives us as a nation--heck, as citizens of the world--the chance to reflect on community, art, and the "shared passions" (in editor Guralnick's words) that can bring us together. These may seem like exalted claims for a book of essays on music. They're not. From Peter Guralnick's wise, sane, inclusive and non-ideological preface to the wealth of talent, insight, and love--yes, love--represented in these essays, this is the most hopeful, humane book I've read in years. Veterans like Greil Marcus are here, and brilliant newcomers like Eddie Dean join him. (Dean's "Desperate Man Blues," the story of a truly obsessive collector of pre-1930's 78 rpm records, alone is worth the price of admission.) There's even a posthumous gem from the late, lamented Lester Bangs. And the lead-off essay, a reflection on music and family by Roseanne Cash, daughter of the legendary Johnny Cash and an accomplished artist in her own right, may make you cry. It sure brought a tear to my eye.
Don't let the riches in this collection pass you by. Get this book! Read it, share it, give it to everyone on your holiday gift list. Music can still bring us together, and this book is proof. I can't wait to see next year's collection.

Customer Reviews:
This book is great! It covers quests too!.......2001-08-22
I know some of you guys think this is a waste of money, but i would say this is worth your money. I mean, do you want to print 200+ pages full of words? or would you like a book with pictures and cover everthing in W&W.
Why I put my rating to 5: This book covers all the quest. This book gives you tips for completing quest at certain levels. This book has maps on all the places like forests, swamp or crypts. This book is a easy to understand. And finally, this book is a life-saver!
Without this book I would have been lost!!!.......2001-06-30
When I ordered this book I was completely lost in the game, so as many people would I waited patiently for the guide. It was the weekend so I had to wait....but early Monday morning I got it! It was very prompt in delivery :) I want to thank the compnay personally for making my game play a lil easier. The book was a life saver (literally)
Save your Money, Folks.......2001-04-23
This book is a waste of money, folks. What this guy tells you, you are able to figure out for yourself. I buy the guide so that I don't need to go through all of the combinations and permutations for puzzles that need this type of solution. I buy the guide so that I am sure that I have the right item to solve a problem. I look for accurate information and not misleading strategies. This book did not satisfy my needs. It was misleading, inaccurate and incomplete.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2001-04-01
This book has been absolutely no help to me at all in the game. There are errors and omissions, muddy maps that don't have some important areas marked, and it is generally lacklustre in effort. It makes you wonder if the author actually played the game. My suggestion is to save your money, and go to a couple of the websites that exist for the game. The Ironworks has a Wizards and Warriors Forum and there are *accurate* walkthroughs for the game.
Better than nothing!.......2001-01-04
OK, it's not the best strategy guide, but given the skimpy manual and the glossy but inaccurate map that comes with the game, it gets the job done. As an early reviewer wrote, there are missing parts and some serious errors. What really hurts the most is the lack of a "by the numbers" walk through: First do this, then next you go here, don't go to C before you've talked to B, etc. There is some of that, in a few places, but not nearly enough. And the encounter guides give you little information on how tough your foes will be. For example, it ought to say don't try the toad quest until your party is at level xxx and has yyy hit points or you'll be slaughtered. So, is it worth the money? Yes, but just barely!

Stand Out From The Competition.......2007-05-14
Joe Calloway has a way of connecting with the reader in "Becoming A Category of One". As you read the pages of this book, you will sense that he is talking to you at a level of your business soul.
In a world where nearly everything is becoming a comodity, Calloway teaches us how to stand out from the crowd. This book is important for bankers, lawyers, accountants, and others who get lumped in as an also-ran with their competition.
Just looking at the cover, how that one apple stands out because of its color, this is how we all want to shine in our careers. But to shine, you must be polished. This book will give you the tools to show how you are unique.

Becoming a Category of One is primarily about branding, creating a strong corporate culture (but this often overused strategy doesn't smack you in the face 1,000 times in this book the way some crazy HR people do), and finding points of genuine differentiation for a business.
I liked the book. It isn't rocket science, but it has simple, valuable ideas that might get you thinking. It talks about how you can't differentiate on the basis of factors that are already generally common to your marketplace or are "entry-level" in nature and how, if you want to "become a category of one," you should:
1. Know more about the customer than anyone else does.
2. Get closer to the customer than anyone else.
3. Emotionally conenct with the customer better than anyone else.
Calloway goes on to describe how he feels you can accomplish this. You should study the marketplace thoroughly, go into a transaction with more knowledge than anyone else about your product and your customer's needs, and use corporate culture as a method of creating consistency of performance in your suborindates.
Calloway ends with a study of The Tractor Supply Company and discusses how management has taught each employee the importance of corporate values and of "doing the right thing."
If you're looking for a detailed study of branding or positioning, this book isn't for you (although it's still possibly worth reading for ideas). If you're looking for a nice collection of anecdotes, stories, and examples about branding, serving customers, and winning in a commoditized industry (which the author believes every industry to be to some extent), here it is!
A book on excellence masquerading as one on differentiating.......2006-04-26
I chose to read this book because its title lead me to believe I'd be reading about differentiation and creating a "new category" in the business world. I am pleased I read the book, but it was not about creating something new, but instead was about creating something exceptional. The author points out that companies with strategic leadership, exceptional sales people, a state of the art product, stellar operations, and excellent customer service are going to set themselves apart. However, setting oneself apart is not the same thing as creating a category of one. In my view, setting oneself apart means being at the top of a list within a category.
The author admits early in the book that the ideas he presents are not new or his. He says he is just a reporter. I agree. I recommend entrepreneurs read this book to get a feel for many of the things they will have to do to be successful when starting their new business. The author tells us what should be done, but he's kind of thin on telling us how to do it. Fortunately, the "how" is specific to each business and an entrepreneur should be able to figure how what he or she needs to do when preparing his or her business plan.
At one point the author provides a list of 3:
1. Know your customers
2. Get close to your customers
3. Emotionally connect to your customers
This sounded more like it was being directed to a sales team than someone who was leading a company to success. I would have liked the book better if the material about "sales" had been left out. Either the book was supposed to be about creating a great company or it was supposed to be about selling what a company has to offer. I don't think it was about both. Nor do I think it should have been about both.
It would have been nice if the author had pointed out that salesmen have to be great if they want to be successful at selling commodities. And great companies that don't produce commodities do not have to be particularly good salesmen - the products sell themselves.
Innovative yet elemental approach ... BEST professional read ..........2005-11-04
I work in the apparel industry where your brand is everything; compelling your consumer to aspire to the lifestyle & image your product represents. This book was an excellent read in providing an innovative yet elemental though ... stop gauging success by competition and strive for top performance by your own standards of excellence. I would also recommend this read from the personal "brand" perspective; marketing yourself as a unique entity that defies competition. Definitely a book that will stay on my bookshelf for reference throughout my career.
Do you know what your business does?.......2005-09-29
This book is not for every person in business, which is unfortunate because only those who "get" this book will have the years of fulfillment that come from really knowing why they are doing what they are doing and the immense satisfaction and success that comes with that kind of clarity and focus. This is a totally different "how to" business book that requires asking and anwering the most fundamental questions about what you do and why you do it. These are most the difficult questions to answer in a meaningful way, but the rewards are equally great. I had the great good fortune to work in a company that could be another study case for this book, so understand from that perspective the power of what Calloway is talking about. The second half of the book is a little weak and somewhat repetitive, but the first half makes the book more than worth the cover price if you truly want your business to excel and provide a rewarding experience for you and your staff. It's sometimes difficult to admit that, as Calloway points out, we do get what we want most.
