5 out of 5 stars Funny, outrageous.......2007-02-21

I have all 10 books available now and they are outrageously funny. I would recommend if you like cute characters and a good laugh. (If you love hello-kitty, this is no for you then. Shinchan is a good-hearted boy who does bad things unintentionally, or intentionally)

Book Description

Rich with illustrations, this revised and updated second edition of Dress Codes systematically analyzes the meaning and relevance of clothing in American culture. Presented here in one book for the first time are theories of clothing and an up-to-date analysis of images of power and authority, gender, seduction (the sexy look, the alluring look, the glamorous look, the vulnerable look), wealth and beauty, youth and health, and leisure and political hierarchy. Taken together, the chapters offer to the student and the general reader a complete"semiotics of clothing" in a form that is highly readable, very entertaining, and thoroughly informative. The illustrations provide fascinating glimpses into the history of American fashion and clothing-along with their antecedents in Europe-as well as a fine collection of images from the more familiar world of contemporary America.

Rubinstein has identified six distinct categories of dress in American society, upon which Dress Codes is based."Clothing signs" have only one meaning and are instituted by those in authority as required attire (police uniform, nun's attire);"clothing symbols," which have several meanings and involve individual choice (designer clothing, jewelry);"clothing tie-signs," which are specific types of clothing that indicate membership in a community outside mainstream culture (Hasidic, Amish, or Hare Krishna attire);"clothing tie-symbols," which act as a means of broader social affiliation emanating especially from fears, hopes, and dreams (Save the Earth clothing, Pro-Choice T-shirts, Madonna's crosses);"personal dress," which refers to the"I" component we bring in when dressing the public self (bowtie, dramatic, or artistic attire); and"contemporary fashion," which is the interaction between political and economic events and consumer sentiments, involving public memory.

Written in a lively and entertaining style,Dress Codes will fascinate both general readers and students interested in the history of fashion and costume, fashion design, human development, and gender studies.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for research about the "why" of fashion trends.......2000-04-21

For a class project, I decided to make a website discussing how various fashions throughout time have reflected the social status of women. This book was a great resource. It makes one realize that people don't always wear clothes just because they like them. Looking at fashion gives wonderful insite into a culture.

5 out of 5 stars Another delightful excerpt in the life of the Pattersons.......2006-07-15

I've been reading FBorFW for over twenty years. The Pattersons feel 'like family'. Like 'The Last Straw', I bought this book for my Dad and before I could send it to him, my teen-aged sons read it. They too are now hooked. Lynn Johnston deals with real life issues. I've laughed, cried, and reflected over this strip as I have no other. It's the only one I've kept up with consistently since I began reading it. I also check it out on-line as my newspapers do not carry it.

    5 out of 5 stars A great early collection!.......2000-09-06

This is my favorite of the early FBoFW collections, from back in the days when it was only serious some of the time. (Not that I don't like it now, just that it is different these days!) Chronologically speaking, this was the era when Elizabeth went to kindergarten and Michael was in grade school, so none of the teenage angst Johnston portrays so well is on display here. But childhood is played for plenty of laughs as we see Elizabeth off to her first day of school ("My baby has joined the system," Elly muses) and Michael endures a Halloween party with his mother as chaperone - one of the funnier sequences in the collection.

There are a few Great Moments in Patterson History along the way, as Connie and Lawrence move to Thunder Bay and the kids' friends Brian and Dawn move into their old house. Even Deanna Sobinski makes an early appearance, though she doesn't look like the same person Johnston draws today (then again, she was only nine years old). And as always, we find that there are laughs to be had in everyday events. If you like the more recent strips and books, you'll love this one.

    Book Description

Everyone knows the phrase "A man's home is his castle." Does that statement ring true even if:

You removed your bathroom door so you could watch TV from the commode?

The directions to your house include 'turn off the paved road'?

You spray painted your dead shrubbery green?

Any redneck will tell you that, of course, it is true. So whether you live in a double wide or have hit the big time with a ranch with one and a half baths, Redneck Extreme Mobile Home Makeover will make you laugh at the way some of us, I mean, some of you live such as:

You Might Be A Redneck if…

Your yard has ever been the proposed site for a landfill.

You think orange peels left on the coffee table are potpourri.

The garbage truck mistakenly takes your lawn furniture.

Someone knocks on your front door and your back door rattles.

Your most expensive piece of art is held up with thumbtacks.

You have to mow around a refrigerator and a bed frame.

5 out of 5 stars Plastic Flamingos = You Might Be a Redneck!.......2006-03-12

Jeff Foxworthy continues his wildly successful and hilarious 'redneck' jokes with a new presentation even more effective than many of his others, REDNECK EXTREME MOBILE HOME MAKEOVER - complete with plastic flamingo on the cover. These are more 'you might be a redneck if' jokes, providing home-oriented comments many will relish and not a few will recognize.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD OL' REDNECK FRUN FROM FOXWORTHY.......2006-03-01

Well I guess I will prove the first reviewer wrong and add a second review. I first saw Jeff Foxworthy a number of years ago on a Rodney Dangerfield comedy special. I have to admit I thought his schtick was funny but that it wouldn't have much mileage but after almost twenty years Foxworthy seems to be going stronger than ever and his audience never seem to tire of his red neck jokes. This book is, of course, a parody of the ABC TV show Extreme Home Makeover, done with Foxworthy's ever-expanding array of "You might be a redneck if..." jokes. Is Foxworthy for everyone? Certainly not, but then neither was Richard Pryor or many other stand-ups. Bottom line is that Foxworthy has found a self-deprecating theme that his target audience likes and he's ridden it hard.

The book is emblazoned with a lovely foam pink flamingo on the cover, right in front of a dilapidated mobile home. The book features very funny illustrations by David Boyd who reminds me of the late, great Jack Davis, long time cartoonist at Mad magazine. Among the gems in this book are:
"You might be a redneck if..."

Your best China traces the career of Loretta Lynn
    Your lawn mower says "Moooo"
Your toilet tissue is Taco Bell napkins
You've ever video taped a yard sale
You're registered at the Dollar Store
You use a hubcap as an ashtray.

    Good, harmless fun from Foxworthy!

          Book Description

This case study examines the impact of casino gaming on Native American reservations, and also explores why the idea of "rich Indians" and their participation in corporate America disrupts dominant assumptions and attitudes about indigenous peoples, their cultural authenticity, and their place in mainstream urban society. Taking an anthropological approach to studying gaming on Indian reservations, the case study explores the implications and challenges of historically marginalized peoples now participating in a corporate entertainment industry. The study raises broader questions about the nature of capitalism and the enduring stability of predominant cultural constructs about Indians that have dominated the country's political and economic arenas. By linking gaming with tourism, what is occurring within the United States is comparatively discussed with similar developments in Canada, Australia, and Mexico where native peoples are increasingly demanding greater rights to participate in the formal institutions and governments of modern western societies. Using extensive interviews with tribal elders, employees of reservation casinos, Las Vegas casino operators, and a broad spectrum of the California public, the book will serve to: 1. Introduce readers to the legal, political, economic and cultural tensions surrounding casino operations on Native American reservations. 2. Explore why gaming has become such a politically and emotionally charged issue. 3. Emphasize how these tensions existing between Indian and non-Indian communities are representative of wider cultural conflicts and identity politics increasingly confronting many countries.

          1 out of 5 stars Talk like a West-Indian..........2007-08-15

Perhaps most useful if you're dumb, silly & blind and a fresh-faced intern
          in the marketing/PR biz.

The randomness of this collection made me wonder if he wrote it over the
course of two weeks worth of company wash room visits in a particularly
constipated period of his life... In the end, the joke was on me.
Waste of money. Someone pass the soap plz...

In case you're wondering, the title of this review references the rather
insulting example of how to 'accentuate the positive'. That was really
the best example this creative gOD could come up with? Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic little gem.......2007-06-18

I love that most reviewers give this book either five stars or just one. That fits with the book's philosophy; Arden urges readers to take risks and produce works that some people will love and others will hate.

"It's not how good you are..." is small and short but brilliantly crafted. The ideas inside are simple but inspiring. Its insights apply to advertising and to life in general.

I love this book not just for what it says, but how it says it it.

I even love the way the paper smells.
