    Book Description

“My daily panel is like a gag, but the Sunday strip is like a little adventure. . . . And with Marmaduke, anything can become an adventure.”
    –Brad Anderson

America’s most playful pooch has been delighting fans since 1954. The lovably rambunctious Great Dane currently appears in more than 660 newspapers, in 20 different countries worldwide. Now, in honor of this top dog’s 50th anniversary, Brad Anderson has hand picked his favorite cartoon strips from the last five decades for this beautifully designed volume that will have everyone drooling.

Marmaduke epitomizes the overgrown lap dog, with an irascible streak and a penchant for mischief that is tempered with a deep sense of love and responsibility for his family. In stature and in character, this horse-sized hound stands head and shoulders above the rest. Marmaduke strikes a chord because, quite simply, he is a real dog. Creator Brad Anderson modeled Marmaduke on his parents’ boxer, Bruno. Originally just a big dog, Marmaduke immediately appealed to newspaper readers in part because the emotions he expressed were so very human. The cartoon canine’s antics and mishaps are both hilarious and remarkably familiar to anyone with a dog.

Marmaduke is also instilled with Anderson’s own deep commitment to community and family. Marmaduke and Anderson have long been supporters–and Marmaduke, their “spokesdog”–of the Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program, in which volunteers and their pets visit sick and elderly in hospitals and care centers. The comic strip is not only a welcome respite, it’s also a helping hand, connecting people in hospitals and care facilities with animals, both real and drawn.

This wonderful collection proves that whether Marmaduke is rescuing a stray kitten, seeing the kids off to school, or visiting senior citizens in the park, he always does it in a way that makes millions of fans smile. Nothing’s bigger than Marmaduke’s heart, including those giant paws.

    1 out of 5 stars It's just not funny.......2006-11-29

Marmaduke has never made me laugh, or even smile. I think the only people who find this kind of humor funny are either very, very simple-minded or very, very old.

5 out of 5 stars worth the money.......2006-08-15

This book was better than I expected. The book is jam-packed with Marmaduke comics and is colorful and fun to look at.
Great for old and new Marmaduke fans.

    1 out of 5 stars Wow, This Isn't Funny.......2005-03-15

"Marmaduke" is a comic strip for idiots. None of the so-called "jokes" are funny, and every single one is like, "Oh, Marmaduke acts like a person!" Now, I've had a dog in my life, so it isn't like if you've raised a dog you automatically find this nonsense funny. It's just idiotic.

If you're thinking about buying this book, consider the following scenario:

A panel displays a large dog lounging on a couch, apparently asleep. A little girl looks on. The caption, spoken by the little girl, reads, "Marmaduke sleeps on the couch, like a person." (The last sentence may or may not be punctuated with an exclamation point.)

Did you laugh at that description? Does the mere sight of a large dog on a couch warm your heart, or induce you to jubilant tears? If so, purchase this book. It's full of things simpleminded folk like yourself enjoy.

Seriously, you guys, this is lame. I cannot begin to describe the lack of wit here. It's as unsubtle as a kick to the jaw, except not as funny. The only reason to buy this is as an ironic gag gift. You know, ha-ha-ha, imagine someone who would enjoy this.

Type "Marmaduke" into Google and read some of the comics. Decide yourself. Maybe then you'll munderstand...

    The horror...the horror.

5 out of 5 stars For Marmaduke Lovers- Buy this Book but Don't Pay Full Price.......2005-03-01

This collection is A WONDERFUL RETROSPECTIVE on the past fifty years of more than 18,000 newpaper appearances by Marmaduke. Brad Anderson created the beloved character of MARMADUKE when he was in high school, and this collection provides a perspective on the gradual evolution of not only Brad's style, but also Marmaduke's character as well as the changing nature of newspaper cartoons. The book opens with an interesting foreword by Jim Davis and a wonderful cartoon which he penned of Garfield and Marmaduke together. After a brief introduction, the book is divided into six sections organized by decade; each section is prefaced by a brief comment from Brad Anderson.

The sections are The 1950's: Marmaduke Takes Off; The 1960's: A Dog's Life; The 1970's: A Dog for All Seasons; The 1980's: Dog Gone Funny; The 1990's: The Greatest of Danes, and finally 2000 and Beyond: The Modern Times of Marmaduke. As Marmaduke devotees would expect, most of the cartoons are simple single panel black and white incidents which capture the essence of what made the strip so enduring, the constant humor of the situations which seemed to make Marmaduke a real dog who reminded his fans of how human animals can seem. There is also an interesting brief interview with the cartoonist at the conclusion of the book.

What differentiates this collection from the over two dozen previous collections (including an early one which turned me into a lifelong fan while still a high school student in the late 1950's), is that it spans the entire period of Marmaduke's existence, beginning even before he had gradually morphed from a generic huge mutt into the lovable Great Dane that he is today. Usually I can easily pick out a few personal favorites from a collection such as this, but I have tried to do so several times and always come up with a list encompassing at least half the cartoons in this collection. Sometimes the text is the key, but often it is Marmaduke's body language or facial expression that evokes my enjoyment of the scene before me.

In summary, there are some cartoons to smile at, some to enjoy life with Marmaduke, and some that will cause you to roar with laughter whether you are seeing them for the first time or the umpteenth time. In fact, one of the nice surprises was the memories this book occasionally evoked of long forgotten encounters with some of these cartoons. If you have been a fan for as long as I have, this will provide a nice stroll down memory lane. If you are a recent fan, you'll have the joy of discovering some long hidden gems. And this book should be kept in a place where you and your guests can frequently leaf through it for the smiles that it will occasion; it is not a book to be quickly read and then consigned to a bookshelf where in all likelihood it will be forgotten, My only caveat is that my five star review assumes that you will buy this book at a significant discount from its full cover price, which is exorbitant. As a Marmaduke fan, dog lover and long time cartoon aficionado, I am truly thankful that I was fortunate enough to discover this collection during my browsing for some light reading material. I strongly recommend it, and believe that you too will be captivated by the charm of Marmaduke's personality.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrated and Saddened by the Attitude of This "Christian" Book.......2007-09-03

First an admission: I have not read the entire book, only a few excerpts. However, the sections I have read seem very typical of Renfroe. This book provides far too much fodder for anyone who considers evangelical women shopaholic airheads who have little concern for the world that Jesus wept over but instead need to get their shopping fixes and focus on decor, makeup, etc. Renfroe IS an entertaining writer--hence two stars and not just one--but the shallowness she seems to espouse is totally counter to a servant life style focused on Christ. Yes, she slips little messages into some sections, but she never challenges--and instead seems to glorify--the woman who spends frivolously just for the fun of it. From the first pages when she jokingly chides the woman who only has one purse or doesn't rearrange her furniture often, it is clear that she is not interested in any kind of serious thinking about how our behavior affects the world God has placed us in.

No, we are not called to a joyless existence as Christians, but to totally ignore the impact of such a consumerist mentality on the world around us is irresponsible and seems alien to our Savior's love and care for all around him. Please don't waste your money on this or similar books.

5 out of 5 stars More than a belly laugh!!!!.......2006-07-26

If you have ever seen Anita Renfroe live (I have 3 times now) then you know what you are in for with the Purse-Driven Christmas: So, What Did You Get Me? You are guaranteed to meet your daily "belly laugh quota" with this light, fun and oh sooo girlie book. I laughed all the way through. I loved it and all of my "slightly off kilter" girlfriends do to, so preheat the "easy bake oven" grab yourself a "Venti Mocha" and an oversized stuffed chair and lose yourself in some real "sistah" fun! Book Description

First-time publication of 8 full scripts from the hit NBC show—winner of 9 Emmy® Awards, including Best Drama writing—selected and introduced by the acclaimed show creator and screenwriter of The American President and A Few Good Men. Here is the first collection of scripts from the show's first two seasons, including the Emmy® Award-winning episode "In Excelsis Deo." The NBC show, named "TV Show of the Year" by Entertainment Weekly, stars Rob Lowe, Dule Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, John Spencer, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen. Reviewers and fans of The West Wing agree that one of the very best aspects of this series is its writing, which blends an unstoppable sense of urgency with strong character development against the background of the day-to-day activities of the highest office in the country. In this book, readers can revisit their favorite episodes, following the fictional American President Bartlet and his key White House staff, his family, and the press as they deal with the urgencies of the moment. As compelling to read as they are to watch, these scripts represent the most complete source for the writers' and creators' visions. 20 b/w photos.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in scriptwriting.......2007-01-04

The superb writing that underpins the success of this magnificent series is revealed. It's impossible to read the lines without the voices of the actors' in your head but that's ok. Sorkin would have written those characters with no thought to who would have played them and it just goes to show what a flawless job they did with the casting. I've played The West Wing 1-7 twice already and look forward to watching them all again soon.

    4 out of 5 stars A damn good read..........2006-02-25

I had resisted the lure of The West Wing for several years, aided chiefly by the crappy scheduling of the Australian TV networks who insisted on putting this show on at bad times and out of order (OK, rant over). During a bout of the flu last year, I succumbed to watching the first season on DVD. Three days later I was at the end of season 4 and completely hooked.

Whilst waiting for my next fix, I came across this book and it's companion volume (the Season 3/4 script-book). Reading the scripts took me straight back to the episodes in question - I could picture it all so clearly. The actors' voices flew out of the pages and brought the scenes to life in my head. My one gripe would be that Sorkin's insights and background info are a little light on the ground except at the beginning of the book (for comparison, check out the official Babylon 5 scriptbooks from J Michael Straczynski).

If you are a die-hard fan of the show or have more than a passing interest in shooting scripts, you need these in your collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2004-03-26

"The West Wing Script Book" is a must for fans of this fabulous show! It's great to see the scripts and to see what the actors worked with. If you've seen the episodes, you'll be able to imagine all of the scenes and mannerisms. Just wonderful. I recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-02-17

Sorkin is the master of the fast-paced choppy dialog, that was so popular with films in the 50's. But unlike those films, the words have more of a wit to them. The characters are so well developed, you can feel what the next line is going to be before you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Impact upon Politics in 100 Years.......2004-01-30

Whoever thought of the idea of portraying the White House environment and its operations was truly brilliant. It is by far the most significant impact upon politics in the last 100 years if not since the creation of the nation. The ability to assess the dynamics of integrated factors and people by demystifying the office and its methods is by far its greatest contribution to American patriotism, as well as to define the obligations and problems which occur there - for any President. Its appeal to young and old alike show the power of illustration. Coming as it did near the end of the Clinton administration, it would have been wonderful to view the complications of his Presidency during it to help appreciate the criticism of Janet Reno, Madeline Albright, Robert Reich, Robert Rubin or any of the other persons who passed through that period. Viewing Stephanopoulous within that context comes rather automatic even now, in 2004, in reflection. It might also have been useful to more clearly evaluate the impact of the first female press secretary who was fired from there at the time, in light of the current makeup of the show. As it is, the most obvious benefits have accrued to the Bush White House, however, since the understanding brought to the American people because of it may prevent the degree of animosity that existed within the Clnton White House at the time, for whatever reason. To the extent that it continues to be an inspiration, as well as an adequate forum in which to air the complexity of issues, how they are handled, and how they might be handled, remains to be seen. It is, though, without a doubt, the opportunity of a lifetime to view the White House in all of its complex protocols, trying to incorporate the many personalities who flow through its halls and rooms, and try to cope with perhaps the most difficult job in America that too few are familiar with, and all are dependent upon because of the decisions made there. This is recognized, of course, in the number of awards and accolades it has earned, and for which the series well deserves. For the 20-30 year old set, both men and women, it is a godsend, and continues to hold their highest fascination, no small task in that group raised upon so much media fare of questionably lower value. The series remains the most important method, yet found, to reach and impress upon people the impact of ideas, and the value of ethics in the highest of places where it is most likely to count to affect everyone's lives, both in this nation, and outside it. A superb idea, and a wonderfully scripted intellectual and psychological journey of enormous proportions, made for everyone. No media rating required since it was done so well!

5 out of 5 stars Another win for 'The West Wing.'.......2004-08-18

"The West Wing Seasons 3 & 4" is a must for fans of this show. With eight scripts accumulated from the third and fourth seasons, not to mention black and white photos from the set, the biggest fan of the show will be in paradise. If the pace of the show is too fast for you, reading it at your own speed will clarify what went on in the episode. If you own "The West Wing Script Book" then you must get this with it. I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Very good once again...........2004-01-26

If you've read the first TWW script book (also very good), you know that this one has a very high reputation to uphold, one it delivers on wonderfully. It features:

Isaac and Ishmael - The post September 11th episode (Sorkin very
clearly explains also why he felt it had to be done)

Bartlet For America - Leo's hearing related to the MS

Posse Comitatus - Bartlet mulls over killing Sharref

20 Hours in America I and II - Toby, Josh and Donna get lost in Indiana and mull over what makes a president.

Holy Night - Toby is visited by his father, former employee of Murder Inc.

Commencement - The first daughter is kidnapped right after graduation

25- After Commencement, Bartlet relinquishes power (Sorkin's last episode)
    ---
Volumes could be written on the elequence of Aaron Sorkin, and these episodes serve as 8 prime examples. The book includes many scenes cut or shortened in the aired episodes, allowing even more Sorkin goodness then you knew existed. In the introductions, Sorkin talks frankly about his drug arrest, the Isaac and Ishmael contreversy and Rob Lowe's departure from the show. The intros are full of the same sardonic self-deprecating, even sometimes serious words we've come to expect from Aaron Sorkin. A definate must have for the West Wing fan, the budding scriptwriter, the writing fan, and just the public at large.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dan The Man.......2007-10-01

I admit I am a big fan of Dan Kennedy,so I was not disappointed with the NO BS Sales Success. There are pearls of wisdom for the experienced salesperson as well as the newbie who still believes the customer really will "think about it"and get back to him. Well worth reading and re reading again.

4 out of 5 stars No bs selling or an example of an infommercial book?.......2007-05-28

My profile: 43 yo beginner enterpreneur

It is very difficult to review this book, because in a way, I started in April 2005 and it is just now that I finished reading it. Add to that, that I received every week about 4 email newstletters from his website filled with valuable info on marketing, sales opportunities, etc as well as the pitch to buy his products.

        - Does he deliver? Yes, but if you can tune to the metamessage
        - Does he have methodology? yes, but he is almost shy of it and never expands on it. ( Too bad, it would be a classic in sales if he did)
        - What he say, will it help you in the "real world"? If the "real world" is the US, maybe, if not, Im not too sure, adaptions have to be implemented.

Since I a not living in the US I can take this book with a grain of salt and see if it just "rides the well travelled roads of consumer behaviour of the US" or does he have something different to say on the matter? Remember, in US mass marketing, and aspects related to the "secret of sales", they are truly the masters in "selling the crap so neatly dressed in its golden wrap".

Dan is straight forward and we have to hand it to him, as his examples come rather blundtly.. yet, for timeless wisdom, there are a lot of other good sources, so it is not this that makes the book unique.

He positions himself in an aura of mystery, he only onced worked in sales surrounded by mediocre performers which he did not emulate, and then went on his own and earns milions of dollars by some sort of divine intervention that separated him from the pack.. . but he is willing you to tell you how, of course, if you invest $$$ to learn it, so in here is not the value of the book.

Somewhere 3/4th ahead, he shares one big secret with you, he goes back to the time he was an average Joe, with big dreams in his mind, with all the motivation and desire in his heart, he listened to all the tapes, yet he still had "moths in his wallet", then it dawn on him, if he could manage supply and demand in such a way that he will have more demand than the supply he can givem then he will always be rich, simple, right?

To me that was the slap in the face and the kick in the seat of the pants that I needed ( I am obviously leaving details out). I agreed with him totally: its not cold calling, is not the sales numbers game, is not all of those worn out mindless "shoot to everything that moves" strategy that will get you ahead.. I laughed at the reviewer who summarized part of the strategy as "playing hard to get".. well, I guess you can say it that way, but I view as he does, you have to "position" yourself in the mind of target segment.. and he gives you examples to do this (finally, he gives away somthing "proprietary" that is not taken from "Poor Richard's Almanac"). As a matter of fact, now you beging to see that the whole book is an infommercial destined to leading you to a new purchase as Scherezade would do with the sultan in 1001 nights..

No, the book does not give away the secrets as how to position yourself, but gives very good guidelines, so maybe you don't have to fall for the "Never cold call again" type of book.

As a beginner enterpreneur I thought that my knowledge of the client base, given my my years working in a corporation that gave me an "aura" of an expert supplier, was enough to assure me success, now in the light of this book, I can see where I am missing out, just for this the book has value.

5 out of 5 stars packed with information, and advertisements..........2007-01-19

I got this book after reading another of Dan Kennedys books. I was not disappointed. After all the book was less than ten dollars, so my expectations were not all that high. I was pleasantly surprised.

Dan talks about many ways to sell and market more, better and faster. The book is packed with information and many shameless plugs for the author, who is the king of shameless plugs. But it obviously seems to be working for him. I think the plugs have a lot to teach also. Look at the way he throws it in and then use them for your own self promotion.

Overall it was an excellent book made even better by its low cost.

        4 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ for All Marketers.......2006-12-26
