Book Description
Hudson River School artists shared an awe of the magnificence of nature as well as a belief that the untamed American scenery reflected the national character.
In this new work, color reproductions of more than 115 paintings capture the beauty and illuminate the aesthetic and philosophical principles of the Hudson River School painters. The pieces included in this volume reflect a period (1825-1875) when American landscape painting was most thoroughly explored and formalized with personal, artistic, cultural, and national identifications. Judith Hansen O'Toole reveals the subtleties and quiet majesty of the works and discusses their shared iconography, the ways in which artists responded to one another's paintings, and how the paintings reflected nineteenth-century American cultural, intellectual, and social milieus.
Different Views is also the first major study to examine closely the Hudson River School artists' practice of creating thematically related pairs and series of paintings. O'Toole considers painters' use of this method to express different moods and philosophical concepts. She observes artists' representations of landscape and their nuanced depictions of weather, light, and season. By comparing and contrasting Hudson River School paintings, O'Toole reveals differences in meaning, emotion, and cultural connotation.
Different Views in Hudson River School Painting contains reproductions of works from a range of prominent and lesser-known artists, including Jasper Francis Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt, John Frederic Kensett, and John William Casilear. The works come from a leading private collection and were recently exhibited at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

Book Description
For Better or For Worse's Patterson family has grown and grown up for the last 26 years on the comics page. Facing real-life issues with a continuously humorous, often poignant, sometimes sentimental stance, For Better or For Worse delivers storylines that reflect the life moments and family challenges that most people face. This popular contemporary cartoon appears in more than 2,000 newspapers throughout the U.S., Canada, and 23 other countries. In this year's collection, Graduation: A Time for Change, life is transforming for each family member and their widening circle of friends. Elly and John face middle age and the decision to ask Elly's dad to move in. As Michael graduates from the safe confines of university, Elizabeth begins her college years with a surprising roommate. The pleasures of being the number one kid sometimes escape the often-lonely April. Throw in the engagement of Michael and Deanna and add another dog to liven up the household and you get a lot of laughs and a bit of chaos-just like real life.

Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
Loyal Follower.......2006-03-17
I have just about all the For Better or For Worse books. I haven't read a bad one yet.
Time for change is right........2002-10-21
I am thinking that Texino has had enough good times with Patterson family. Maybe Canadian peoples are really that happy and white, but since Mrs. Johnston sells the majority of her wares in USA, I think the stories should be more in line with the happenings in this lovely land. In real life: Deana could be addicted to pills, her baby could die from SIDS. Without free medical care the goofy husband could die of heart attack or better yet, kill himself like many a dentist does. Elly could become a bag lady drunk and the rest could just drift off for the worse. If Texino was writing comics, this would definately be the fact of the matter.
Go USA #1.
Another worthy addition to the collection.......2001-10-24
Ever since I picked up the For Better or For Worse 20th Anniversary collection last year, I've been spending a lot of time searching out the older books, reading stories that anthology touched on but didn't cover completely and learning more about characters I already knew and loved. The progression of those two decades really is remarkable. Now, amidst all the nostalgia I (and, I suspect, many other FBoFW fans) got caught up in, comes a reminder that our favorite strip is still better than ever today.
From a strictly artistic point of view, Lynn Johnston's drawings have grown steadily sharper and more detailed over the years. But the real star of the show remains Johnston's knack for engaging stories, which are - as always - a nice blend of laughs and serious looks at the everyday problems we've all got to overcome. Much of this collection is concerned with Michael's post-graduation blues and his efforts to establish his career and Elizabeth's struggles to adjust to college life, two things many of us have been through or will go through in real life. Anyone who knows those experiences will tell you they're not often funny, and as such Johnston doesn't try to sugarcoat them - but she does produce a knowing chuckle all the same, as usual. As for April, love her or hate her, there's plenty here as well for the fans to argue - and maybe even laugh - about as always. (Perhaps in response to frequent complaints from some fans that April is a spoiled brat, we're actually treated to John and Elly discussing that issue in this collection...nothing like a cartoonist who listens to her fans!)
It's still among the most serious strips out there, but FBoFW remains good for a laugh this time around.
5 stars as usual.......2001-10-19
The continuing funny and sometimes poignant saga of the comic pages' favorite family. I look forward to each daily strip and each periodic anthology.
Book Description
In this book, a well-known speech writer and brilliant public speaker explains how to use humor effectively in speeches for every occasion and for any type of audience. Included are more than 600 humorous stories and anecdotes from the author's own collection -- stories and anecdotes that anyone can use to enliven a speech.
In Part One of Podium Humor, the author discusses from the speaker's standpoint as well as from that of the audience. With numerous examples he explains what humor is made of, what triggers laughter, how to tell a story, and how to use humor to build suspense. From the basics supplied by the author, you learn how to develop your own humorous stories to suit your individual needs.
Part Two of the book features a cross-indexed collection of humor: anecdotes, stories, and one-liners on many topical subjects. The author shows you how to work these humorous pieces into your speech by suggesting "lead-in" lines for particular stories plus "bridge" lines to return to the main sppech.

A great help.......2000-06-25
The book is funny in itself and provides a large array of stories to add a humorous point to your speech. More focus on political stories, but can be adapted to other situations.

Book Description
Featuring more than 100 photographs, this lavish tribute looks back with affection at the remarkable and influential career--on both sides of the camera--of one of the cinema's most popular stars. Now in paperback. Gene Kelly was the man who dragged Hollywood musicals into the second half of the 20th century--splashing through puddles in ``Singing in the Rain,'' dancing to the top of the Empire State Building in ``Our Town,'' teaching French kids to sing Gershwin in ``An American in Paris.'' He took dancing out of the ballroom and set it alive on the streets. He was also, of course, an actor, choreographer, and director, but it is as the first modern screen dancer that Gene Kelly will always be remembered. This picture-filled volume is a tribute to his rare talent and indelible body of work. Sheridan Morley is a drama critic and biographer, whose subjects include Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Ruth Leon is the author of Applause: New York's Guide to the Performing Arts. 168 pp 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 8 color & 100 b/w photos

Wonderful Book.......2001-03-21
I really thought this book was great! If you are a Gene Kelly fan this book is for you. It has little tid bits about Gene that a fan would want to know. Gene Kelly- A Celebration mostly talks about the movies Gene made and his contributions to the movies. Great pictures also. I highly recommend buying this book.
A great book about THE MAN.......2000-02-16
This book is a must for all Gene Kelly fans. It has wonderful pictures of him, and allows you insight into his life. This book describes the making of each movie that he made. Buy this book, and I'm sure you won't regret it.
Too Many Photos, Not Enough Story.......1999-06-26
The other reviewers have said what I am going to say: There just is not enough about Gene Kelly's life in this book. It's a little TOO "celebratory". Any conflicts that arise between him and others at the time are glossed over as Kelly doing no wrong. Some of his failures are presented as if they did not create a problem for the star, yet anyone who has lived on this planet (so then everyone) KNOWS that Kelly's failures and difficulties were probably not as ho-hum as the authors would like us to believe. In their attempt to be respectful of the venerable star, they take us sometimes for fools who have not experienced life. I'm only two-thirds of the way through the book, but it does not seem to me they are going to mention the fact that Kelly kept Michael Kidd from becoming more than he could have been, speculated by some to be the result of jealousy and insecurity about the competition Kidd offered. Also, several of Kelly's famous dance numbers are referred to as "the most remembered", "his biggest", "his most famous", "his daringest", etc. Well, they can't ALL be that. This indulgence in hyperbole is reminiscent of a "That's Entertainment" film. The photographs are wonderful, but the book's layout creates an awkardly cumbersome book that is too heavy for what it contains, and just doesn't "fit" well on your lap when reading in bed, nor does it carry around well when moving from room to room in your house on a lazy Saturday when trying to enjoy your book. I know that seems petty, but reading is an entire experience with a definite ritual. The shape of this book interferes with that coffee-and-pajamas-on-the-couch ritual. It's just too heavy and could have been easily condensed into something smaller and more manageable. Nitpicking aside, read this if you are a Kelly fan. It's a delightful journey back in time.
Colorful, but not entirely comprehensive!.......1998-01-26
Initially, this book is very alluring. Now, i'm not one to "dog on" anything affiliated with the legendary icon, Gene Kelly... However, this book is less than PERFECT. It contains many wonderful pictures, as well as commentary(nowadays, the "bare-minimum requirements of any "celebrity tribute" book), but lacks in-depth information about the artist. In that sense, this "celebration" does not do Mr. Kelly justice. Mr. Kelly is great, the jem of americana. Sadly, this book is only half as pristine.
A fantastic book on a fantastic man.......1997-12-04
I am so ecstatic that they finally have a book out there all about Gene Kelly.. The pictures are great. It's well worth your time to order it.. I am such a HUGE fan of Gene Kelly, he is the ultimate cure for the blues, him and chocolate
Forever sigin' In The Rain.. :o)

weird and wonderful.......2005-03-27
I looked this rarity out after having read his amazing biography of Vivienne Westwood & I was not disappointed. This guy has a totally unique takes (or set of takes) on biography writing, a combination of tongue in cheek verite and cruelly refreshing insight. But this book will altogether make all Bushists uneasy and I see on the Net it has veru much enraged them and I bet it really riled Kate Bush herself, too. All the more reason to relish it, maybe? A real treat, a music biography that treats the reader like a co-conspiritor rather than a sad "fan" and loser and lapper up of trivia. Also it is very funny - in more senses than one!!!
semantically astute, yes indeed!.......2004-03-16
Tartingly consequential, this book sequesters all that is proficient in a vocabulary of a sort of indecent mimesis such as was practiced by the tart at heart, a rugged review of indelicate visons perambulating along the uneven and filibustering courses of horses that (or, indeed, who) were an inebriation of the headily windward affections of one who cleaves to the OTHER side, a circumspect acknowledging and pushing to one side, a sort of circular perambulation, a... shall we settle on? a sort of GRY/at(io)n. We might then hope to ape the doxocolilacal metaphors so awry in Teutonic vicissitudes as was spraying efficacious parameters of ecstatic mtlopolagonisations here. As well as there. In fact. In short. A monsterpiece!
Nice pictures, but take the rest with a pinch of salt.......2001-06-11
I very much like Kate Bush and her music, so I was thrilled when my brother spotted this book at a car boot sale and bought it for me. The first thing I noticed was the name of the author, Fred Vermorel. Now, having read various Kate Bush fanzines over the years, I'd formed the opinion that Mr Vermorel is, how can I put it, 'not very popular' with Kate Bush fans. This is because of a previous book he had written entitled 'Kate Bush: Princess of Suburbia', which was apparently less than complementary. It was therefore with some trepidation that I started reading 'The Secret History of Kate Bush'.
At 94 pages the book it quite short, so it'll take no more than a couple of days to read it. A significant part of the book deals with Kate's family history, concentrating on a couple of interesting ancestors - Henry Bush who apparently scandalised the Victorian village of Pebmarsh, and Joe Bush who apparently served time in Wormwood Scrubs for being a conscientious objector during the First World War. All of this makes interesting reading, but one can't help but wonder how much of it is accurate. Since Kate and her family had no involvement in the research behind the book, I would imagine that this potted history is at best economical with the truth, and at worst 99% fiction.
Another part of the book attempts to analyse the name 'Kate' with various quotes from songs and literature. It doesn't succeed because you can't apply meaning to something as abstract as a name. Likewise I found the passages about 'suburbia' to be equally tedious and nonsensical.
The latter part of the book concentrates on Kate's childhood and school days, including some quotes from childhood friends and classmates. Once again the credibility of these quotes is questionable, but if genuine they paint the picture that Kate was maybe a bit lonely - probably because she was just too nice for her own good.
I didn't find anything in the book that was particularly uncomplimentary or disparaging towards Kate, which I had expected, other than the possibility of the 'history' narrative being closer to fiction than fact. Ultimately this book is an unsatisfying read, not least because of Mr Vermorel's lack of credibility due to his previous book, but also because if you discount the legitimacy of the historical narrative, there's little else which is of interest, apart from a few dodgy quotes. Still, my brother only paid 50p for it. I think he should've haggled.
For fans only !.......2000-07-08
Well, what can I say. This informative book is not what I would call a beginners guide to Kate Bush-fans, but I'm sure it wasn't meant to be either. Lots of great pictures not only of The Godess of Music herself, but also of some of her ancestors. You see, half the book is about Kates father, and her fathers father etc. So if you're looking to find out why Kate is Kate, this is the book for you. At the same time I have to say that this is not a biography. It contains a discography, but the book was released in 1983... In other words not nearly a complete discography. All in all a good book by Fred Vermorel, but as I mentioned earlier -not for Bush-beginners.
Customer Reviews:
Don't look at my notes.......2006-03-02
I've just started a new campaign for V:tR recently and my biggest problem has been the players knowing what is comming up next for them to deal with because they eventully see the notes of the sharaters they would be fighting from across the table, not only do I have small handwriting, but a big table. So I started using empty binders but that was more of a hassell because I don't have all the roles memorized. Then a friend (not a member of the group) gave this to me and I fell in love with it. It has almost everything that a storyteller needs for his characters that are in the requiem, it is made out of nice sturdy material, and it looks really cool. The only thing that it missees is the diciplines dice rolls, which can be rolled frequently in some game sessions, espcially if a charter has auspex. Other than that It is a great thing to have, and if it wasn't given to me I would go buy one immideatly
Requiem Screen.......2005-09-20
As a storyteller, anything that allows me to put my book down and play a game without ever having to reference it at the table has my vote. These new screens are filled with necessary information and really make life a lot easier. There is no storytelleg guide with these new books, but you really don't need one with these screens. Plus they are very sturdy and pretty to look at. For storytellers, this is a must.
Better than I expected.......2005-03-20
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't had to purchase a Storyteller's screen in a long while, and this met and exceeded my expectations. Was expecting a thin cardboard foldable that would hide my secrets. What I got was four segments of the same material that's used on the book itself. This material feels thick and sturdy, and will last as long as you need it to.
Haven't been able to test the usefullness of the content inside, still convincing my gamers to make the move from V:tM to V:tR, but it looks like the standards I'd be looking up.
The only thing preventing this from getting a 5 is the outer artwork, the screen is the deep red you'd expect from the book, and features the same glossy rose petals you'd see on mentioned book. There are however small, I want to say 4 in x 2 in, pictures along the bottom that distract from the subtleness of the screen.
A screen well worth the purchase, and one you'll be sure to use for a long time to come.
Book Description
If all firms face similar obstacles to profitable growth, how do some companies successfully burst through these barriers, leaving their competitors in the dust? Rita Gunther McGrath and Ian C. MacMillan argue that an answer to this question lies in MarketBusters. Best of all, the authors say, opportunities for identifying and executing such moves can be unearthed throughout a company’s existing business platform—if managers know where and how to look for them. The authors practical tools and checklists to help leaders determine the best marketbusting move to use in a given situation. Vivid company examples illustrate the moves in practice, and clear guidelines aid managers in implementing their chosen moves effectively. Driving continuous growth is imperative for every leader in every industry. MarketBusters is the field guide that will help them succeed. MARKET BUSTERS OFFERS: * A Unique Perspective on Growth Opportunities: Big “breakthrough” moves are risky and often unsuccessful. Today’s executives are looking to drive growth off a platform of established markets, with existing customers, and with existing products and offerings. This book shows them how to do that. * A Highly Practical Approach: Actionable, tools-oriented focus of this book will appeal to executives under pressure to show results fast.
Customer Reviews:
A Book of Business Ideas and Strategies.......2007-06-20
Market Busters, which purports to offer "40 strategic moves that drive exceptional business growth," follows through well on that promise and does exactly that. It's not a book of fluff or platitudes, and every single strategic move in the book is built upon a foundation of time-tested theories and actual, real-world examples. This isn't a motivational book that tells you "you can do it" but rather an extensive study into what has worked (and also what has NOT worked) written for educated people in straight-forward, albeit not "dumbed down" terms.
Here's how the process works for these 40 moves and for this WHOLE book; in my humble opinion, it's a good process, and I learned a lot. It will suggest a business strategy as follows. I'll take one as an example. Move #11: Eliminate Complexity: "...opportunity for what we call radical surgery, a move to dramatically eliminate complexity. Radical surgery is made possible, ironically, by the very efforts of companies to be responsive and to invest in improving their offerings. [...]" Two examples are then provided, one of a stripped-down hotel experience and another of an overly-complicated oven. Finally, prospecting questions are provided for eliminating complexity or executing the strategy move first proposed.
WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR: This book is for serious business people, and people who want to study business as a science and a strategy and not simply as an array of promises and platitudes. I think it is best for someone in a LARGER company or with ABOVE-AVERAGE resources, because a lot of the moves suggest using teams or collections of people, so it is most suitable for corporations and large entities, although for me, it was a pleasure brainstorming experience even as a small business.
Overall, the book is great. It provides a strategic move, talks about it, gives examples, and then asks you prospecting questions or thinking questions to force you to think about the strategy as it applies to your own business. The examples are all real-world and don't always involve success (some show what caused failure). I'd recommend this not only to people already in business but also those planning new ventures.
Very Thought Provoking.......2006-11-06
This book hits the nail on the head in many areas, but its greatest quality is that it is thought provoking. Perhaps your company is stuck in a rut and you need to create ways to get it growing again--this book will help get the thought process going. This could also serve as a team building book in that you could buy a copy for each of your key employees (possibly directors and VPs) and assign them each a chapter to discuss at an upcoming meeting. Then brainstorm after each meeting to implement the best ideas from the brainstorming session.
This is truly a great book that should help any executive or company to stimulate the creative juices. Highly recommended.
a great book.......2006-06-12
A very down-to-earth and very practical handbook for any strategical formulation endeavours. Better than those metaphorical ones, like "blue ocean strategy". Would get five stars if it did not mistakenly treat "People's Republic of China" as "Republic of China" in the case on p. 129. There is only one province of ROC, i.e. Taiwan.
Immediate tools for driving organic growth.......2006-04-17
There are a number of books on the market focused on innovation, and this one is by far the best. McGrath and MacMillan have built upon concepts introduced in The Entrepreneurial Mindset, and have yet again provided actionable strategies for driving extraordinary growth.
MarketBusters provides a disciplined approach toward examining "profit drivers" within a company and developing straight forward strategies for redefining products, processes and business models. Through models and prospecting questions, the book provides a hands-on tool that can be put to use immediately in virtually any business.
For example, identifying what you charge customers for and how you measure profitablity, and changing the game to match customer needs, is an example of a simple, but effective technique for redefining your offerings and developing a defensible competitive position.
I have seen the results of using the concepts in MarketBusters. A must read!
Awful Title & Cover----Great Book.......2005-11-22
The title (and jacket cover) smack of pop management drivel.
Yet, the content of the book is excellent.
I enjoyed MacMillan's first book "The Entrepreneurial Mindset" which was referred to by Clayton Christiansen in his also excellent book "The Innovator's Solution". The discovery-driven strategy process is so important that an entire book could be written just about it. Having worked in corporate venture capital, I've seen first-hand how difficult it is to nurture and grow new businesses inside of a corporate behemoth. This book gives excellent strategies for doing just that. I think both books compliment one another very well.
