And note that volume 1 (ISBN 0023395702) contains an additional 20 plays.

This two-volume set is actually a more convenient and more economical way to collect 41 plays than piecing together single plays in the New Mermaids, Regents Renaissance, or Revels series. In fact, many of the plays in this two-volume set are not otherwise available.

This book is an embarrasment of riches -- enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A nearly lost treasure-trove..........2004-04-30

This volume (w/ its companion) covers the other people who were writing plays at the time of Shakespeare. And there are at least two things to be said about that: 1) even if Shakespeare had never been born, this period probably still represents the most vibrant, remarkable body of writing for the stage the English language has ever produced; 2) the fact that Shakespeare was born means that these wonderful plays go mostly unread. (If you've seen "Shakespeare in Love," you get a sense of the vitality of "the scene.") This is Great Stuff! From the lyric power of Marlowe's verse, to the learned wit of Jonson's comedy and the purgative bloodletting of Webster and Tourneur, an entire world of theater is put before you in these volumes, a cosmos beyond the Globe. These authors are not interesting merely as context: there are examples in here of people doing things Shakespeare couldn't do. And even if you come away thinking the Bard was still the best of the lot, you'll have a rich appreciation of just what an accomplishment that is.

Book Description

Le grand couturier Yves Saint Laurent has been challenging the fashion establishment for nearly half a century. One of the first to revolutionize street style with his 1960s "Beat Look" collection, and credited with the creation of the pantsuit—his le smoking, a tuxedo tailored for women, provoked the androgynous movement in fashion—Saint Laurent continues to produce sexy, vibrant lines. Now, the French television network Canal+ has documented the making of his Spring 2002 collection for its upcoming film, 5, avenue Marceau—the address of his famed couture house. This deluxe, definitive volume follows YSL through every stage of his preparations for his 2002 spring collections. Also included are never-before-published quotes from YSL as well as photographs from his early years and pages from his mother's scrapbook. The clippings are lovingly annotated in her own handwriting and illustrate a personal dedication to one of fashion's greatest talents.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the definitive look at the universe of YSL.......2003-01-18

Though the producers and editors of this book have obviously taken great care and reverence in assembling the images seen in this hefty Rizzoli hardcover edition, it is nonetheless lacking.
There is an eight-page, albeit in very-large typeface, essay extolling the philosophy behind the decades of YSL's influence and visions of modern fashion, as well as journal entries in Yves Saint Laurent's own handwriting that are written mostly in French. There are several famous quotes from him: among them the most famous of all "there is nothing more beautiful than a naked body."

The photographs number in the hundreds, though only a handful of family photographs from YSL's childhood in Oran, Algeria are captioned with names. Otherwise, the documentary's images shot mostly in the atelier at 5 avenue Marceau are without caption or description, though you can discern the sense of creativity and endless discussion that is the process of the haute couture. The masterpieces of tailleur (suits) and flou (dresses) are often one-of-a-kind. Their numbers are usually limited to one or two copies, so the 2000 or so women who can afford the prices are not likely to see someone else wearing that same opera coat or evening gown which ends up photographed in the society pages of Paris and New York among other places. If you are paying $50,000 for a hand-embroidered Lesage suit jacket, you don't want to see it on the shoulders of a half-dozen of your fellow couture followers. Ca marche pas!

Most interestingly the editors did not include many quotes from some of Saint Laurent's inner circle, except for a small contribution from his life and business partner, Pierre Berge. There is one short blurb from Catherine Deneuve, but no words from Loulou de la Falaise or Betty Catroux, or even Marie Munoz, directrice of the YSL atelier for years. There are some very old press clippings from the 50s and 60s when YSL was hitting the peaks of creativity, but very little from the pinnacle of his career, which would be most of the 1970s. In the 70s we witnessed some of the greatest moments in fashion history with the Chinese and Russian collections that set the trends for womens' wear for years after the clothes were shown in Paris.

The book is full of images, but short on text. For those who are unfamiliar with all the innovations introduced for women's clothing, their number is second only to that of those brought forth by Coco Chanel. Saint Laurent created the women's pantsuit, the "smoking" or women's tuxedo, the trenchcoat, the safari look, khaki, the list goes on and on. Seeing the documentary would be more than helpful, as it would fill in many of the gaps.

A beautiful book that leaves you only wanting much more...

4 out of 5 stars More than the man.......2002-08-07

If you are looking for a book about the designer YSL look somewhere else. If however you are interested in the flow of fashion design as done by YSL then this is a wonderful creation. To me it feels like a work of gratitude to all those involved behind the YSL name.

1 out of 5 stars Who is this book for?.......2002-03-30

O.k. first, let me say, it's my own fault. With picture books it's best to have a look to see if you really want to spend the $. I didn't. I made an assumption that with YSL retiring this would be a retrospective of his glorious career. Not so. Fuzzy, boring, behind the scenes pictures of people at work in his atelier. Very few dresses and those shown aren't shown well. All in all a disappointment.

The world as we know it is about to end and the Runaways are the only hope to prevent it! But if our fledgling teenage heroes are going to succeed, they may have to become just as evil as their villainous parents. The Runaways have learned how their parents' criminal organization began, and now they must decide how it should end. As the Runaways' epic battle against their evil parents reaches its shocking conclusion, the team's mole stands revealed, and blood must be shed. Which kids will still be standing when the smoke finally clears? This is the story that changes everything (seriously!).

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "Season Finale" of Runaways.......2007-09-27

Brian K. Vaughan really knows what he's doing. This volume, collecting issues thirteen through eighteen of the first run of "Runaways," ties up every loose end perfectly. The villainous characters that make up The Pride, the primary villains of the series, are finally--and gracefully--fleshed out.

The story, simple as it is (kids rush to stop their evil parents from sacrificing the soul of an innocent girl to giant monsters), will leave you satisfied with what you've got, though still wanting more. Also, instead of the straightforward good versus evil that many of Marvel comics offer up, "Runaways" is really all about ambiguity. No one in this story is pure evil; there are so many ways to interpret this story that it may in fact leave you pondering it for long after you put it down.

The story isn't perfect, though. Deus ex machina is heavily put to use here, from the convenient way that Chase both found and was able to operate his parent's "ship" as well as the sudden, unexplained appearance of a very popular Marvel hero at the end, who neatly brings things to a close. However, the story is simply tasty enough to ignore that. You don't get the kind of quirky fantasy-drama that "Runaways" brings to the table without a price, and the usage of deus ex machina in this volume was that price. In my book, it was more than worth it.

The final issue collected in this volume is one of the best comics I've read, period. There's not much action--though there is some--but it's a perfect wind-down if I've ever read one. That's a problem many writers have, whether it be in prose, comics, or script-writing. The wind-down of a story has to be equally as good as the climax, answering any questions that weren't answered at that climatic moment, and at the same time giving a little nod to every little plot thread that was addressed earlier in the work. Brian K. Vaughan, seemingly effortlessly, does that.

    9/10

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Really excellent all ages superhero stories. This picks up again from the fist volume, with some unexpected about turns, some new revelations, some new antagonists, new locations, and run-ins with adults and other well-meaning types. The Runaways, of course, resist, thinking they know best for them. In this case, they probably do.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting, Shocking and Satisfying Conclusion.......2005-04-24

Wow. Where to begin without spoiling the whole story? The authors came through with one heck of an explanation for the Pride's evil doings. Realistic? Not at all. Plausible? Sure. The writing is excellent (even if I don't believe real teenagers talk this wisely and humorously, I believe these six do), the motivations believeable, the confrontation between the kids and their parents both touching and painful and action packed...and the unveiling of the mole was a real surprise. I thought I had it pegged and then had to revise my take on everything that went before. Was the ending a tad rushed? Yup. Did the mole spend too long explaining WHY they acted as they had? Uh-huh. Was the epilogue a little obvious? Oh yeah. Even so, this ol' children's librarian loved every page.
    Highly recommended

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2004-06-16

I came across this delightful tome in the B&N bargain bin a few weeks back and what a bargain it was!! Mr. Dougherty has managed to do something that no one else has done before him: capture the humor, drama, class and uniquenees of the legendary New York Friars Club.

Contained within its pages are hundreds of fascinating and obscure behind-the-scene tidbits about the Club itself (we get all of the history of how it came to be), and the great men and women who have been immortalized at Friars events over the years: Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle, Humphrey Bogart, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Lewis, and Dianna Ross to name just a few!

I can only imagine what a treat it must have been for Mr. Dougherty (and his research team) to go back through the Friars voluminous archives, listening to all of the legendary roasts and dinners and flagging the most interesting and funny moments. Not to mention all of the amazing black & white photos that were taken through the years!!

In logging on to write this review today, I see that Mr. Dougherty has a new book about the Friars Club - a celebration of their 100th Anniversary! And in 1-2 shipping days I am confident that I will be in for another treat!!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the funniest and most x-rated roast moments.......2002-04-04

The only reason why I almost didn't give this five stars is that this wonderful book actually isn't just a collection of the funniest roast moments from the New York Friars Club. It is partially a HISTORY of various roasts through the years. Well-written and well-organized, from the standpoint of LOTS of zingers the fun truly begins about 75 pages into the book. Before that there are wonderful accounts of the early roasts but not a lot of jokes.

Not all of these laugh-out-loud (I mean REALLY laugh out loud) lines in this book are x-rated, but quite a few of them are. Dougherty also offers memories from some of the celebrity participants, which put some of the ribbing and behind the scenes stories (and egos) in focus. It's a GREAT approach...and it does work.

But don't expect a mere collection of jokes listed by subject -- the emphasis here is on a given roast and the participants. In fact, in the index you will find names of performers, not subjects. Roast victims included such names as Al Jolson, Sophie Tucker, Milton Berle, Frank Sinatra, Phillis Diller, John Travolta, Stephen Seagal, Drew Carey and many many more.

The three roasters who made me roar the most were comedians Milton Berle (he will be missed -- something about Berle was a running joke at the club for years), Red Buttons and Buddy Hacket.

I highlighted the jokes I liked as I read them so when I want a big (and guilty r-or-x-rated) laugh I can go back and re-read them. There were LOTS of markings in this book, and almost every line I marked is a winner. But be forewarned: this is not just a book of jokes and one-liners, but a fascinating history as well as a laugh-packed volume.

    5 out of 5 stars everyone loves a secret.......2001-01-03

If you happen to be one of the unfortunate souls who hasn't heard of the Friars Club, then buy this book and get with the program! This book is guaranteed to make you the most popular person at those boring cocktail parties, supplying you with some of the funniest, totally true moments in Friars Club Roast history. Now you can tell people what really happened at the Whoopie Goldberg Roast... or which woman snuck into the once all-male roasts dressed as a man... and who got mad at whom for saying what. Finally, some of show business' best kept secrets and juiciest behind-the-scenes tidbits are revealed in one of the funniest books on shelves today. Author Barry Dougherty somehow manages to turn a show business history lesson into a rip-roaring riot of a read in this easy-to-read-while-you're-waiting-for-your-laundry-to-dry book. The anecdotes are priceless and guaranteed to make you laugh for days later. And Dougherty has such a delightful writing style you'll find yourself passing this gem on to friends and foes alike. There are few secrets in show business... and now, there are even fewer!

    5 out of 5 stars great read!!.......2000-10-09

What a fun, funny book! Picked it up after seeing the author on TV--I think Entertainment Tonight. Not just for those interested in the history of The venerable NY Friars Club, but for anyone who gets a kick out of those ribald comics who inhabit it ...

The dinners and roasts over the decades haven't changed ALL that much except for the progressivly risque language and other verbal hi-jinx, according to the knowledgeable Dougherty(and pretty amusing guy too), but what he captures in the interviews he seems to have personally conducted with some recent attendees--from Jason Alexander to Red Buttons--is the 'spirit' of the Friars' fetes and the laugh-outloud insider-type anecdotes they provide.

I think anyone who likes comedy--from the Seinfeld era to Berle era, -- old & young --well not too young there's some blue material in the book!--will really like NY Friars Club Book of Roasts...

This is the screenplay to one of the most important films of the 1990s. Worthy of comparison with the Edith Wharton novel upon which it is based, it is also a fascinating example of how filmmakers bridge the difference between literature and cinema. In its afterward, Scorsese and Cocks provide an annotated list of the cinematic sources that influenced their writing and direction. The reader can use the list as a guide to further viewing.

"This book is a rarity--a sumptuous coffee-table book that actually has something to say. With 144 photographs and drawings and 96 color plates--including reproductions of 14 paintings by Whistler, Tissot, Sargent and others, 33 production and rehearsal photos, period works from the N.Y. Historical Society, and photos of 19th-century locations, it is as luscious as the movie it records and as much an art book as a film record." --Gannett

I saved up to purchase this book and I could not be happier! What a gorgeous book- This is one of my all time favorite films and to have a book that includes the script is a real treasure. The text of how the movie came to be is one of the best parts of this book. Impressive in size and just beautifully put together- If this is one of your favorite movies, than you must have this book...you won't be sorry!

4 out of 5 stars Fine script for an under-rated film.......1999-11-23

Not being familar withe book, Scorcese and Cocks came up with a excellent film of class hypocrisy and repression. Well worth reading on its own right, hopefully this film will get the acclaim it deserves. Those that did like this film should also examine Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon', a film which was one of Scorsese's main influence during the making of the film.

5 out of 5 stars a glimpse into our heritage.......1996-12-23

This book really can be called a "work of art". It includes some stunning pictures and paintings that later inspired the making of the film "The Age of Innocence". It's really an uncommon chance to glimpse into our own pictorial heritage, as seen through the eyes of one of America's most important filmmakers. Included is also the shooting script and a series of quotations from the period's writers that help in the building of the 19th century athmosphere. Strongly reccommended to the lovers of this film and to the ones who want to appreciate more and understand where the "inspiration" comes from. Massimo Benvegnu

I came up with an invention and had no idea how to protect it or what direction to go next. I had read several other books but Harvey's book rocked!! It gave me so much of the information I needed, I am considering submitting my idea to Harvey Reese to see if he can obtain a licensing agreement.

This reference book is filled with lots of valueable and helpful information and is a great resource for those who wish to develop an idea.
Author seemed in conflict with other experts in one area. He insists that only a face-to-face meeting can bring results and he strongly suggests that an agent should be hired. Other experts advocate that successs can be had without following this path.
