Book Description
Back in print with a new introduction and epilogue by the author, this modern classic is "one of the few indispensable books about Hollywood." --Jack Kroll, Newsweek. "What altered Hollywood irrevocably was the notorious 1980 film Heaven's Gate." --Irwin Winkler, The New York Times, 1/14/99. Heaven's Gate is probably the most discussed, least seen film in modern movie history. Its notoriety is so great that it has become a generic term for disaster, for ego run rampant, for epic mismanagement, for wanton extravagance. It was also the watershed film of the '80s--not for its cinematic qualities, but for its effect on Hollywood and the way movies were and were not made for years afterward. For Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate did not merely fail; the film did the unthinkable: it sank a studio. Less than a month after the picture's second release, United Artists--the company founded in 1919 by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith, and Charlie Chaplin--for all practical purposes ceased to exist. What happened? Why? How? In answering these questions, combining wit, extraordinary anecdotes, and historical perspective, Steven Bach has produced a landmark book on Hollywood and its people, and in so doing, tells a story of human absurdity that would have made Chaplin proud.

Destroy the Myth.......2006-12-22
Myths and legends pervade and shade our light of the truth. Art is lost to commerce and business; the business of Hollywood, which rarely produces art. Michael Cimino became a leper of ill-repute based solely on negative reviews and publicity that shielded and prevented the public with seeing 'Heaven's Gate.' Do we know this, or do we still nurse the myth and legend? This film is a masterpiece along the lines of D.W. Griffith, David Lean, Akira Kurosawa, Francis Ford Coppola, and possibly, John Ford. Cimino's genius lies in 'The Deer Hunter' as well. 'Deer Hunter' is a powerful, masterful film. 'Heaven's Gate' parallels this mastery with its excessive beauty (excessive is used lightly in the bloated productions of 2006). This book should be destroyed as it only perpetuates the thought of a time when negative hype can wipe clean of any exposure to art on celluloid. Watch the film; ignore the ignorant past; embrace this director; watch his films. 'Year of the Dragon' is a fine film as well. Begin with 'Deer Hunter,' and then the film in question.
Worthwhile history of eighties Hollywood.......2006-11-03
So much has been written about Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate" that few people recall the film itself: a bloated, aimless, wandering and unfocused epic about the Johnson County "war" of the late eighteen hundreds. The book's story of wretched excess, greed, artistic ambition run amok and misguided faith in that ambition mirrors the story of the making of Fox's "Cleopatra" in 1961. Though "Heaven's Gate" has a devoted cult following today, such admiration is common to reviled works: people have a tendency to champion projects that "nobody else got" because it makes them feel elevated from the common wisdom, or a part of an exclusive culture of appreciation. Sadly, Cimino's film doesn't warrant such revisionist thinking. The book explains in excruciating detail the process by which a small, personal project became one of the grandest flops in the history of Hollywood. Equally culpable in this fiasco are the men and women who allowed this director to squander the millions spent, even after it became apparent that the film was a disappointment by the kindest standards. Far from being a lost opportunity (the story of the Johnson County war has been done several times, in films like "Shane") "Heaven's Gate" is probably the best known example of the kind of apalling waste that drove the film industry into the sad state it has fallen to. The author accepts his share of the blame, and is astonishingly fair to Cimino, defending the director's vision, his decisions, and his intentions. But the end result (known to every film buff) hangs over the proceedings like grim death.
Don't go in the cellar!.......2006-03-09
This is one of the finest books ever written about the movie business. Bach explains, step by step, why he and the other UA execs did the things they did, and the disaster that unfolded. He's honest about his own failings, but at every step, as he outlines the choices available, you realise that - in his place and without the benefit of hindsight - you'd probably make the same mistakes. It's fascinating.
Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, it's easy to see the experience as a kind of horror movie. Each time UA concedes a point to Cimino, you feel like yelling "Don't go in the cellar!" (or, in this case, "Don't cast Isabelle Huppert!"). Of course, down they go into the cellar, where there are even more zombies lurking. The high point is the part where Cimino demands the installation of an irrigation system to ensure the grass looks properly green - but of course it's his land!
I have read this book several times since it was first published, and lent my copy to at least a dozen people who are also in the business. Everyone I know who knows anything about moviemaking has loved it.
The Big Money Movie Business, Blow By Blow.......2005-08-26
Wanna detailed blow-by-blow account of the behind-the-scenes business machinations surrounding the production of a big-budget (and bank-breaking) movie at a major Hollywood studio? Look no further than this book!
Perhaps "surrounding" isn't the appropriate term since author Steven Bach, who was head of production at United Artists during the time immediately preceding the original publication of this book (its original title was Final Cut: Dreams and Disaster in the Making of Heaven's Gate), really couldn't get his hands around the major film project which was writer/director Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate.
Following the lengthy but fascinating back history of United Artists, Bach presents a matter-of-fact but truly stomach-churning description of how the elusive sense of creative unity in the sincere quest for timeless cinematic art butts heads with the realities of capitalism. Though he rarely dwells on it as such, Bach gives the reader a visceral sense of the ulcer-inducing frustrations that can befall such a project.
How is it possible that a film's original budget can balloon so exponentially without a clear sense of the market's need or want for such a project? How is it possible that financial disaster can be predicated on the faith afforded in the talents of a single man whose reputation rests solely on a single well-received film? You'll find out by reading this book.
It's perhaps too easy to make Michael Cimino the fall guy in this scenario; there were plenty of corporate politics apart from the Heaven's Gate project, and which Bach thoroughly delineates, which "might" have been circumstantially responsible for UA's downfall. But what Bach rightfully chooses to focus on is that area for which he was ultimately responsible. It's painfully obvious that Cimino's exploits on location in Montana were "allowed" to get out of hand. It was Cimino who formulated the original budget and made certain assurances. It was Cimino who built, destroyed, then rebuilt a large exterior set of late 19th century Casper, Wyoming. It was Cimino who chose to print upwards of fifty takes of scenes. It was Cimino who promised a roughly two-and-a-half hour film that eventually came in at over five hours. These are personal shortcomings which are simply impossible to overlook...up-and-coming Academy Award-winning cinematic genius or not.
Granted, Cimino's own account of the happenings on location are not to be found here. Bach does, however, give accounts of the many meetings and conversations he, the producer, and Cimino had during the entire gut-wrenching process. Perhaps one day Cimino will bravely come forward and explain, in writing or in film, his personal culpability and reasoning. That his career in Hollywood took a downward spiral following this escapade is most unfortunate--he is obviously a director with talent and a vision.
It's well known and understood that in the world of entertainment, luck and timing can count for an inordinate amount toward success or failure. Indeed, success and failure can only be quantified in ways which are hardly tangible apart from dollars and cents. From Bach's account, it's plain to see that with a little judiciousness on the part of many important decision-making people, this financial disaster need not have occurred.
I can't imagine a better read than Final Cut if one wants a detailed dissection of torment in the pursuit of corporate American art.
Fascinating account of a filmmaking disaster.......2004-07-13
It was called a "runaway," and never has a term been more appropriate. In this case, it was a movie running millions of dollars over budget with an end nowhere in sight. The 1980 film "Heaven's Gate" has become synonymous with failure, its very name punned whenever big-budget productions flirt with disaster. Steven Bach's "Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film That Sank United Artists" gives a terrific blow-by-blow account of this gargantuan flop. A former producer at United Artist who suffered the ax after "Heaven's Gate," Bach penned this detailed tome a couple of years after fallout.
The book should be a fascinating account for film lovers. "Final Cut" details the history of United Artists and filmmaking in the 1970s - a truly golden era. At United Artists, Francis Ford Coppola premieres "Apocalypse Now," Woody Allen helms "Manhattan" and Martin Scorsese prepares "Raging Bull." But the man of the hour in 1978 is a quiet guy named Michael Cimino. He just won an Academy Award for directing "The Deer Hunter," and now he wants to make a western - a big, big western.
Bach accurately reveals the difficulties United Artists was going through at this time, losing several long-time executives who jump ship to form the Orion film company. Bach and company, wishing to re-establish United Artists as a major player, take on Cimino's western project. Cimino sets up shop in Montana, the location work a two-hour's drive from the nearest cement road. He ships an antique train across five states to the Montana wilds. He hires over 700 extras. He signs a cast of mainly unknowns including Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Isabelle Huppert, John Hurt and Sam Waterson. And he films only during the twilight hour, a period right before dusk so scenes will have a golden hue. But what terrifies United Artists most is Cimino is filming 50-60 takes per scene, and printing almost every take. Such obsession was unheard of.
As Bach reveals in "Final Cut," Cimino's western (now hovering around $25 million) was going to have make blockbuster numbers just to turn a profit, performing in the "Jaws" and "Star Wars" neighborhoods. United Artists attempts to fire Cimino, at one point even asking David Lean to take over. Cimino realizes the dire situation, finally bucks up and finishes the film. With promotional and post-production fees, "Heaven's Gate" cost United Artists $44 million - the most expensive film in history up to that time.
Heaven's Gate is premiered in New York, a three-and-a-half hour monstrosity that receives devastatingly bad reviews. It is eventually released to the theaters and makes $1.8 million. It is the biggest bomb in motion picture history (cue dead elephant hitting the cement). Heads roll at the studio, Cimino's career is finished and United Artists, a film company created by Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, is purchased by MGM to disappear forever into the sunset.
Cimino's "Heaven's Gate" spelled the end of the free-spirited, amazingly creative decade of the 1970s. Producers and studios took the reins out of the hands of superstar directors (Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" ran a similar "Heaven's Gate" route, but he pulled success from the fires of disaster, perhaps inspiring this debacle as much as anything else). "Final Cut" is a tragedy exposing the end of a golden era of filmmaking and a once-great studio. It's as good as an Irwin Allen disaster film, and a lot cheaper.

What We Women Won't Do.......2002-12-17
This is a beautiful book, almost falling into the "coffee table"genre with interesting illustrations and color photos. The sidebar comments add fascinating details to the pictures. Along with the discussion of what a woman will do to feel beautiful in her era, the author spent time discussing the impact of historical times, i.e. World Wars I and II, on lingerie, as well as the development of the tire industry into girdles and DuPont research into other synthetic fabrics.
It made for a fun program and with the addition of items from our local fashion museum, we females now appreciate how fortunate we are to live in our current period.
Lush photos and illustrations!.......2001-11-08
I got this text primarily for use with my own illustrations and artwork, and to look for proper silhouettes and undergarment styles to go with period fashions and costuming, for which it's a great guide. I've really enjoyed using the text, and keep it on the coffee table-- it's a fantasic conversation piece! The graphics are wonderful; look to other reviewers' comments on the text; that was not my focus.
A Wonderful Work of Social History.......2001-03-27
Beatrice Fontanel has done an excellent job piecing together the fascinating history of bras and corsets. Let's face it - what zaftig woman hasn't said to herself, "My God, what DID they do before the bra?" Well, here's your answer.
The illustrations from various sources are top notch and of excellent quality with an emphasis on 19th and 20th century advertising. Since support has changed according to fashion, the book naturally chronicles in detail the ebb and flow of various fads. Suddenly women fainting at the drop of a hat no longer seems an affectation after reading an account of a 23 year old woman who died shortly after a ball - the autopsy revealed her ribs that overlapped one another from years of corset use had finally pierced her vital organs! I did find Fontaine's text to occasionally be a little shallow, and was dismayed to see Tony Curtis refered to as the captain of a submarine in "Operation Petticoat" (it was Cary Grant). Whenever I find a small error like that I can't help but wonder what other errors I'm missing.
For the costumer, the social historian or anyone interested in women's issues, the book is a wonderful read.
Useful and Fun.......2000-04-26
This is an excellent book filled with illustrations and photos. Support and Seduction is narrated by a lucid discription of the way corsetry and undergarments have effected women and the wearing of clothes. It mentions undergarments/understructure from as far back as midaevil times and follows through at a brisk pace until the early 19th Century, The major concentration of it's efforts begins around the Romanitc era and continues into the late 20th Century. A must have reference book for costumers and others who have need for period research at their fingertips. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has an inkling of interest on the subject, the book is a good read besides being useful.
Book Description
When Harvey Swick discovers Holiday House's secret, he escapes into a world in which time has sped by without him. Now he must plunge inside once again to regain what's been taken from him.
Book Description
Stepping out of the darkness, the American emerges upon the stage of history as a new character, as puzzling to himself as to others. American Humor, Constance Rourke's pioneering "study of the national character," singles out the archetypal figures of the Yankee peddler, the backwoodsman, and the blackface minstrel to illuminate the fundamental role of popular culture in fashioning a distinctive American sensibility. A memorable performance in its own right, American Humor crackles with the jibes and jokes of generations while presenting a striking picture of a vagabond nation in perpetual self-pursuit. Davy Crockett and Henry James, Jim Crow and Emily Dickinson rub shoulders in a work that inspired such later critics as Pauline Kael and Lester Bangs and which still has much to say about the America of Bob Dylan and Thomas Pynchon, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Smeggin' Delicious.......2000-04-25
This is a nice little guide to (in my opinion) the best British comedy ever. My two regrets are that there are not enough pictures and not enough behind-the-scenes stuff. There is a bit, but even more would be better, right?
Another hilarious book, can these boys ever dissappoint?.......1999-04-16
This book is as expected a true gem, with non stop laughs all the way is impossible to put down. The fab four meet in this book and immediately hit it off, or nor in Rimmers case as you follow them through an adventure which goes wrong, nothing unusual there .What is unusual is the way Grant Naylor manages to keep his audience all the way in this wonderful book.Enjoy.
Not Very Smeggy!.......1998-12-03
Hey! The book is not particularly consistent with the TV show, but it is quite hilarious! The only thing wrong with this book is that it ends! With the way that this book leaves you wanting more, it makes it all the worse to know that more IS available - but not in the USA! (Well, that is, except for "Better Than Life" - which you should order along with "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers".) Order this book, and then pester Amazon to import the rest of the series! ("Backwards" and "The Last Human" are available from amazon.co.uk). Note: These books go best with a pint of bitter and an extra spicy curry.
Smeggin' best thing since Toast.......1998-01-06
If your an Red Dwarf fan then this is the book for you. It has lots of information on the show, the books, the merchandise, and more. Episode guide if filled with little tidbits of info you might not of known. The A-Z list is long but the writers keep it intersting.
Don't buy if you hate A-Z lists.......1997-10-12
The Programme Guide offers a complete insight into the series to date, but falls short due to its instance of devoting three quarters of itself to a large (and very pointless) A-Z list. However, there are some nice photos, synopsis of the episodes and the spin-off books and info about upcoming series. 'Programme Guide' is a very vague title, but it is more appropriate than 'The A-Z of Red Dwarf with a few episode guides at the beginning.'

Waste of Money.......2007-03-06
This book is total garbage. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on Steve Kaufman's parking lot picker series. If you want to learn some basic bluegrass rhythm I guess this book is ok, but if you want to learn to flatpick this book is nigh worthless. I've been working through parking lot picker 1 for the last several months and the improvement in my speed and technique has been tremendous. This book, on the other hand, I spent about an hour with and got essentially nothing out of. The cherry on top of the book's worthlessness is having to listen to Russ Barenberg's putrid singing voice.
Too Much Sheet Music, Too Little Teaching.......2006-08-03
The first 15 pages are nothing more than you get in thousands of other books and free on many internet sites. The rest of the book is songs in tabulature. I expected the book to teach me how to play the songs. And, when I try to play the songs, I find the small print tabulature very hard to read.
Good book with good CD........2006-06-26
This book is great for learning to flatpick bluegrass music. I prefer some of the arrangements to those in Happy Traum's book, and the inclusion of 2 versions of each song on the CD make this great for those with less Bluegrass familiarity.
Tablature only.......2006-02-05
Coming from a classical music background, it'll take me extra hours /days to learn to read the tablature and finding the right sounding note on the fretboard. Because of this, the usefulness of this book decreses, and therefore I prefer "Bluegrass Guitar" by Happy Traum, which has not only tablature but also staff with streble cleff side by side. Traum's book is also twice the music material than Barenberg's book and sells about the same price.
This is my favorite bluegrass tutorial w/ CD.......2005-11-17
For guitarists wanting to learn bluegrass, I recommend, "Teach Yourself Bluegrass Guitar" by Russ Barenburg. It contains many bluegrass classics and all of them are included on its CD. Each song is played twice, once with lead guitar and once with rhythm only for practicing. (Which is a nice feature because most instructional CDs want you to use the balance control to isolate the rhythm part, but most "boom-boxes" these days don't have that control anymore.) While none of the songs are played really slowly for beginners, Russ isn't burning up the strings either. The songs are played at a moderate performance pace - suitable for learning. The music on this CD is so good that I often listen to it in my car just for fun.

Great book for the Bluegrass Mandolin player of all levels........2007-07-07
This is a great book and incredible series by Alfred Publishing (I buy mostly Alfred book as they are the best for your money). This one is specifically for Mandolin but there is a corresponding book for Banjo and Guitar and a corresponding DVD for each. I recommend the DVD if you are new to the Mandolin and need a quickstart guide to Mandolin technique and chording Ultimate Beginner: Bluegrass Mandolin Basics and Beyond. Dennis Caplinger is one of the best Multi-instrumentalists out there in the Bluegrass genre. Everything in the book and CD is detailed in Mandolin TAB so note reading isn't required. There are Bluegrass standards like Blackberry Blossom, Black Mountain Rag, Dixie, and John Hardy all recorded on the CD so you can really hear the Mandolin in the mix. Both single note lines and chords are presented separately and are extensively broken down into small parts, then all put together in the last part of the book so you can play the songs solo on your shiny new Mandolin. If you want to be a Bluegrass multi-instrumentalist get all three books in the series.

Entry level book for the aspiring bluegrass flatpicker........2007-07-24
This is a good book for those just getting into bluegrass guitar and need a primer to get familiar with the style. The book assumes you have some technical facility on guitar like being able to play open string chords and scales. The book starts slow with giving the guitarist an overview of scales, chords, and techniques used in bluegrass. Then practice exercises are given that will help facilitate playing the bluegrass song you are going to play. Both the backup rhythm guitar part and the lead melody line are presented assuming you'll be playing this with another guitarist. The book is tied in with the Mandolin and Banjo book in the same series and is presenting assuming you want to jam with a bluegrass band as opposed to playing solo. Dennis Caplinger is a great performer and teacher and all the examples are on the CD.

This book contains three colorful cut and make replicas of Kachina dolls along with a brief background explanation. The Crow mother, from the new year ceremony,Pussy Willow,a guard for the new year ceremony and Eagle,a participant in early March festivals, are examples of Hopi kachinas. The book provides an explanation of how to cut and assemble each doll. Both the diagrams and the written instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. The directions are so explicit that they insure success. However this is not a project for young children and even middle school children will need some adult guiudance.

Teaches you to work smarter not harder without the cliche's.......2007-01-23
This book blew open my old beliefs on selling with it's basic premise. Simple, but powerful. You are not just selling to your customer. You are also selling against the current provider. I had never considered the incumbant provider as part of my sales process. I had always thought of them as a nuisance that I hoped would go away. Not anymore.
In my experience, sales books like this one rarely deliver much of substance to the seasoned salesperson. They usually use catchy titles and then fill the pages with a lot of re-cycled fluff and hype. This book showed me in living color that there is another way of doing things that will increase my income and quality of life...if I open up my mind to it and give it a try. (BTW I have given it a try and it works.) The method suggested is backed up with statistics, examples, a pursuasive argument for questioning the old way of doing things and a road map to follow.
Another refreshing first for me when it comes to sales books....this one did not overpromise - Made very clear that sales is still sales. There's no magic bullett or get rich quick way to do it. The Wedge is better, it's not fool's gold.
Motivated me and gave me specific actions to take. I came away from the book knowing that I could put a plan based on this book into place for the coming year. I also felt well supported, knowing that I could contact The Wedge organization if I wanted more training or clarification of the process....but I didn't feel like the point of the book was to sell me on more training.
Bottom Line: There is enough here for the do it yourselfer and ample other resources available for those who want a more comprehensive understanding of the The Wedge method or want the kind of training that will really get you or your organization moving in a new, more profitable, direction fast.
Great Ending - I loved the note to the buyer at the end. Great perspective shift. Great way of disarming the buyer as "the enemy" which is how they must feel sometimes when dealing with sellers.
This book is an easy read. It's well written, motivates you by opening up your perspectives on selling in new ways, and stays away from wild promises and Used Car Saleman hype. It re-ignited my passion for selling and gave me solid advice for getting more productive as a salesperson. A great resource that I refer back to a lot. Again, rare for a sales book in my case.
I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to get their numbers up.
Excellent Book. Randy hits it dead on!!.......2007-01-18
I thought this would be another one of those old sales techniques made to work today, but that's not what this book is. The author has it dead right and explains how to get your competition fired without saying anything bad about them (thus the tiltle) in an awesome way. If you are in sales and your prospect has a current vendor or supplier this stuff really works. Try it and your business will increase. The book is an easy read and full of examples. All I can say is you have to read this book and you won't be disappointed.
Thin on content .......2007-01-04
The content is good - what there is of it. And there isn't much! Somewhat overpriced, I think. I only bought it because someone whose opinion I respect raved about it, and how much of a different applying the technique had made to his sales closes. I agree it's a very, very good technique.
But the book's expensive for a single idea, said over & over.
Fluff overload.......2006-09-07
I confess that I made a mistake buying this book at an airport on a whim without reading any reviews online. I've read several books on selling, and this one is the worst, mostly because it's very diluted with filler material that adds no value but makes the book look sizeable.
The idea of the book is create a 'wedge' between you and your competition by having a proactive sales / support strategy. While this idea sounds nice, at the end of the day this 224 page book's only real content to "get your competition fired" is a set of six fill in the blank questions that you can, "apply to any sales opportunity"
This book is fluff, plain & simple. Don't waste your time.
Well written, must read.......2006-08-06
I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to make a living, a life and a career in the art of selling.
