Book Description
To what extent did white European women contribute to the imperial cultures of the second half of the nineteenth century?
In contrast to most cultural histories of imperialism which analyze Orientalist images of women rather than images by women,
Gendering Orientalism focuses on how women themselves contributed. Drawing on the little-known work of Henriette Browne and other "lost" women Orientalist artists and the literary works of George Eliot, Lewis challenges masculinist assumptions relating to the stability and homogeneity of the Orientalist gaze. In order to draw out how the meanings attributed to their words and images, as well as t the writers and artists themselves, were specifically gendered, classed and racialized, the author examines women's visual and literary Orientalism through their contemporary reception in the press.
Book Description
1340 to 1363 were years remarkable for dramatic developments in fashion and for extravagant spending on costume, foreshadowing the later luxury of Richard II's court. Stella Mary Newton broke new ground with this detailed study, which discusses fourteenth-century costume in detail. She draws on surviving accounts from the Royal courts, the evidence of chronicles and poetry (often from unpublished manuscripts), and representations in painting, sculpture and manuscript illumination. Her exploration of aspects of chivalry, particularly the choice of mottoes and devices worn at tournaments, and of the exchange of gifts of clothing between reigning monarchs, offers new insights into the social history of the times, and she has much to say that is relevant to the study of illuminated manuscripts of the fourteenth century. STELLA MARY NEWTON's lifelong interest in costume has been the mainspring of her work, from early days as a stage and costume designer (including designing the costumes for the first production of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral) to her later work at the National Gallery advising on the implications of costume for the purpose of dating, and at the Courtauld Institute where she set up the department for the study of the history of dress.

Not for the beginner!.......2001-01-17
This book is definately for the experienced costumer - and for somebody who is deeply interested in researching fashion in this era.
It is a book that is full of detailed descrption, although the lack of colour illustrations is definately a minus. I had hoped that with the re-issue the photographs would have been re-taken in colour.
I found it to be very useful, but definately not something to sit down and read - it is definately a "study" type of read.
fashion in the age of the black prince.......2000-04-27
i would just like to say that i was extremely dissapointed with this book due to the lack of illustrations especially colour illustrations of which thier were virtually none. id have to say that i was decieved by the books lovely cover page.
An excellent reference, if a little hard to read.......2000-04-21
This book is filled with useful information for those interested in the costume of the period, although it can be hard to untangle some of the author's sentences. Newton covers the period in short segments (a few years at a time), examining the changes to costume throughout Europe as documented in a variety of sources - contemporary descriptions in chronicles and literature, illuminations, condemnation of fashion by clerics, sumptuary laws, and household accounts. The glimpses into social history, economics, politics and class structure are also useful. My only regret is that she strictly limits herself to the period in question and that there aren't more illustrations. But this book is an excellent resource.
An integrated look at costume and culture.......2000-04-04
This excellent book will take you through the early years of the fourteenth century and not only illustrate the costume of England and France through historic art and illumination, but also explain the social and cultural influences of the era. Current sumptuary laws and literary references to the clothing of the time flesh out a very clear and entertaining look at the costume of the age.

Customer Reviews:
The story was really good........2006-09-19
I'll admit I wasn't fond of the artwork for the main title, but after I read the first page, I was hooked. The characters are well developed and plot's interesting. However, towards the end it seemed to wrap up a little fast. (I think I'd have preferred a longer story, to be quite honest.) In all, it's a very good read and a sweet love story to boot.
Another poor production from Yaoi Press!.......2006-02-07
Kingdom of Selfish Love again proves my point that Yaoi Press production simply lags behind Japanese Yaoi/Shounen-ai manga.
Yaoi Press graphics is amateurish, childish and crude and their plots lack depth. Kingdom of Selfish Love is no exception. Over US$10 per book, this is simply not worth it. Still I rate it 2 stars because there is a story line though nothing to shout about! No more purchase from Yaoi Press for me!
Ending.......2005-12-01
I wasn't so happy with this book's ending, but this is only because I actually, while hating the idea of incest, liked the idea of Duran and Rhane being together. Mainly because the dark and angsty character of Duran is one of my favorites. The plot is very well thought out and I found myself reading it quite a few times to just "take it all in."
Duran really is insane...but my favorte parts were about the White Knight. The story in the back, Genie's Pawn, is actually very good, as well. I find I really like any of the stories by Yamila, though I don't know why.
Kingdom of Selfish Love.......2005-09-17
I did not particularly care for this book. The art was not that good. The story was too childish for a book that is supposed to be for adults only. I don't recommend any yaoi lover wasting time or money on this one.
Why Did I Buy This?.......2005-09-04
Please carefully read customer reviews before purchase. I wish I had! One reviewer complained that the art made the males look like undeveloped 12-year olds. Another said it was like bad Fanfiction. Both are correct, but I'll go one further: They look like androgynous 12 year olds, and not in a bishonen way. The text is set up like I was reading "Elfquest" (which I actually prefer), and the publication was so bad that there was a PHOTOCOPIED page GLUED over a misprinted duplicate page! Maybe this will make my copy special or rare or something, because there is no other reason to have this in my yaoi collection, or in any true collector's.
Customer Reviews:
20+ Years, and I still LOVE it!!!.......2004-07-14
When I was a teen, my mother gave this book to me. We both thought that it was hilarious. We shared stories of my mother's teen years and compared our "worlds". Now that I have a daughter who is a pre-teen, I'm looking to carry on the tradition. Even though this book was written in 1981 - it's timeless in it's attitudes of how a teenager views life. Ahhh...the tragedies of teenagers!? Would recommend this to any Mom and Daughter team out there!
Funny and timeless.......2000-05-14
You'll have flashbacks to your own teenage years while reading this book. Although it's definitely rooted in the American teen experience, the embarrassment of adolescence seems to be pretty much universal (in the English-speaking world at least), so this book is sure to strike a few chords no matter where you're from. Appealing illustrations round out the package. Recommended.
What is Teenage Romance?.......2000-04-02
This book is all about what life is like for a teenager. It gives you those embarassing moments plus what to do about them. I wouldn't take any of the advice seriously, but it's a great thing to read! It also proves that you can overcome anything you wish as a teenager. However, it also helps teenagers to see how obsessed they are with image. If you are a teenager, I highly recommend this book. If not, you'll still get a good laugh.
Book Description
Adventures of a Hollywood Secretary is an insider's view of the film studios of the 1920s--and the first from a secretary's perspective. Rich in gossip, it is also an eyewitness report of Hollywood in transition. In the summer of 1924, Valeria Belletti and her friend Irma visited California, but instead of returning home to New York, the twenty-six-year-old Valeria decided to stay in Los Angeles. She moved into the YWCA, landed a job as Samuel Goldwyn's personal and social secretary and proceeded to trip over history in the making. As she recounts in her dozens of letters to Irma, Valeria Belletti encountered every type of Hollywood player in the course of her working day: moguls, directors, stars, writers, and hopeful extras. She shares news about Valentino's affairs, Sam Goldwyn's bootlegger, the development of the "talkies," her own role in helping to cast Gary Cooper in his first major part and much more--often in hilarious detail. She writes of her living and working conditions, her active social life, and her hopes for the future--all the everyday concerns of a young working woman during the jazz age. Alternating sophistication with naiveté, Valeria's letters intimately document a personal journey while giving us a unique portrait of a fascinating era.

Fascinating Letters for Those Interested in the Period.......2007-02-07
Valeria Belletti was an energetic, intelligent young woman who came to Los Angeles from New York and worked as a secretary to some of the most powerful and interesting people in Hollywood in the late 1920s. During this period, she wrote dozens of letters to her best friend, describing not only her experiences at the movie studios, but her personal feelings and day-to-day life in southern California and on an extended trip to Europe. These letters make up the bulk of this short book, which left me liking Valeria very much and wishing there had been more. Well-written background notes are provided by editor Cari Beauchamp.
While Beauchamp supplies some valuable padding-out of the events and personalities Valeria described, she tends to give the compilation a modern feminist point of view the author of the letters did not seem to have in mind. In contrast, the letters indicate that rather than being the victim of an "iron ceiling" (Beauchamp's term), Valeria, although a high school dropout, had opportunities to grow professionally beyond being a secretary, but chose not to pursue them. Furthermore, rather than half-heartedly marrying a man she was "only fond of" (Beauchamp again) as a sort of economic expedient in an oppressive patriarchal society, Valeria was an independent woman who went where she wanted to go and did what she wanted to do. She had no trouble supporting herself comfortably, and she enthusiastically married a man of modest economic means, of whom she wrote, "The more I'm with him, the more I love him."
I have the paperback edition and find it odd that the name of Valeria Belletti, the delightful author of the letters comprising this book, does not appear on the front cover or the spine, while Beauchamp's name is displayed in large print. For enthusiasts of early Hollywood or 1920s southern California, Valeria's letters are well worth reading, while taking her editor's feminist leanings with a large chunk of salt.
HOLLYWOOD HISTORY AT ITS BEST.......2006-07-04
Fabulous Book. If you want to know the inner-workings of the star-studded Hollywood Machine in the 1920's then this is the book for you. An insider's account with all the trimmings. Cari Beauchamp does it again. BRAVA!
Fascinating... to a point........2006-06-14
This is a very fascinating book if you're into Hollywood history, specifically of the 20's. Although written as letters to a friend, they a lot like a diary, and as such it's a look at Hollywood of that era from a viewpoint we've never seen: the regular employee. There are plenty of books by and about the stars, directors, executives, etc., but this is the first one from a secretary, and while that may not sound as exciting as, say, a book about Buster Keaton, it really is interesting.
What's great is that these were just casual letters, not something their author (Valieria Belletti) expected anyone but her friend to read, consequently she speaks her mind with an openness and honesty you just won't get from someone who's expecting to be quoted. The letters are full of comments and incidents about major stars and directors, but are presented in a casual way, not jazzed up as they would be upon later reminiscence or if they were being told in an interview.
The only thing I didn't like, and this is to be expected from the private letters of one young woman to another, is that the "search for a husband" stuff gets a bit tiresome. It's still interesting in terms of being a window on the mores and social life of the time, and therefore some readers might find it better than the movie studio parts, but I came at the book through an interest in the movies not an interest in how women dated in the 20's. (As I said though, I did find this stuff interesting, it's just that it started to occupy more space than the studio stuff. And in Valieria's defense, it sounded like she was wearying of it after a while too.)
So I'm glad I read the book and I definitely recommend it, just don't expect wall-to-wall insights and revelations about Hollywood. Not that I expected that, but just be sure you don't either.
A Must Read for Anyone with an Interest in Vintage Hollywood.......2006-05-20
This book is not only for film buffs, it is a window to a world that is long gone. It is a bird's eye view of Hollywood at the end of the silent era and transitioning into the age of the talkies.
Aside from the great Hollywood dish, of which there is plenty, Belletti was remarkably candid and refreshingly not star struck. Although, I must confess that I can totally relate to having a crush on Ronald Colman. In the end it is the delightful, matter of fact, take no prisoners Valeria Belletti that you come so much to admire in reading her letters. She was a wonderful letter writer and these letters are, indeed, treasures. At the turn of each page you are delighted anew with some insight or adventure. She was one spunky girl and wrote letters that are filled with details of her days and nights in Hollywood. We need to bless her beloved friend Irma for saving these letters and presenting them to her many years later.
We must also thank Cari Beauchamp for bringing these letters to light and annotating them carefully with her own delightful and informative prose. As I said before, this is a window to a lost world. More than that, it is a celebration of an independent young woman making her way in a man's world and celebrating her life at the height of the jazz age. This will be a volume I will turn to again and again. Don't miss it, this will brighten the gloomiest and dampest spirits on a rainy day.

An excellent guide to hosting a poker party.......2005-12-26
I am the occasional hostess of the TEXAS HOLD'EM tournament held at the local American Legion.
Although there is only a page or two on HOLD'EM, the book has some excellent tips on hosting a party. The food, the table, and the availability of a vacuum cleaner for spills.
Texas Hold'em is like all other poker games in that it is most important to know your fellow players.
Some bluff, some don't. Ergo, KNOW YOUR OPPONENTS.
Rules of neighborhood poker according to hoyle.......2005-10-24
I bought this book looking for tips or rules of games for a home poker game. After all it does have the name Hoyle on it. Instead I got a book about the author and his buddies poker game. It does have some games in the second half of the book but you have to put up with stories about how his buddies bet and how they play and what type of players they are. This is not a Hoyles rule book of poker games
My Favorite Poker Book.......2005-08-19
I read this book for the first time 10 years ago and started a small-stakes ($20-$50) apartment game with a bunch of friends that has lasted ever since. As most people know, nobody is normally betting enough money to make Texas Hold Em very interesting for very long, so home poker games quickly degrade into a mix of non-poker games like Indian and Between-The-Sheets. This book provides enough variations on basic poker games to still play small-stakes poker without just pushing the high-winner of the night into dealing blackjack. It's not comprehensive and it's not encyclopedic and it's definitely from this author's point-of-view, and it's an excellent book.
Horrible..........2005-01-13
We bought this to keep around to settle our minor disputes over rules, and for most of the game information I guess it's not too bad. I mainly got it because I thought it was an "official" handbook, which it is anything but. But I would highly recommend that you don't waste your money on this one. Spend the extra cash and get something a little better. If you want to play poker that is, because what this guy talks about is NOT poker. Any game that doesn't involve 600 wild cards is, in his words, "boring."
Plus, if you play cards like he says in his scenarios you might get the crap beat out of you. Almost all of the dialogue involves string betting...and a lot of the other "etiquette" rules are also a bit off. So if you want to know some of the basics and how to play improperly...go ahead and get this one.
The Bible of Home Poker Variations.......2004-08-17
This is the single best book for learning crazy/wildcard poker
variations. It's only competition is half of AD Livingston's book
"Poker Strategy" and surfing the internet for "home poker". I
recommend this book so you can have it handy while playing.
The author describes dozens of variations and shows exactly how to
deal each of them; most include a sample hand. There is also advice on
hosting home games. Nearly no tactical or stategic advice is given.
This is for people who like to play poker for nickels, dimes, and
quarters with friends and family. If you want to learn how to win
poker at a casino or online, this is not the right book. If you want
to have a blast of fun at the beach house or kitchen table with a deck
of cards, this book is a must.
It is well written and fun to read.

Old wine , New ,,,, cover design perhaps?.......2007-09-17
For ages we are told to involve God in our plans. For ages we are told that prayers with faith "as little as a mustard seed" can work miracles in our life. For ages we have found this to be true. Do we need to spend time reading 300 plus pages to know that, or is that time better spent praying.
Need an idea to make money? This is America. Books on making money sell! You only need one key idea to promote and scores of success stories to support that key idea. Look around in your neighbourhood, you'll find plenty of success stories. They dont have to be in the billionaire or millionaire range. Just a nextdoor guy doing well, should do. Of course, you need to be in a club where authors praise each other's books. You scratch mine, I'll scratch yours. Now, you just keep on pounding that one idea with different words or phrases, over and over and over again,, page after tiring page, till (along with stories, anecdotes, etc etc) you reach an acceptable number of pages so it can be called a book, and you have your book ready. Rich Dad Poor Dad, was excellent for those who came across the idea for the first time that "a job wont get you anywhere". You see? just one idea and a book was created that sold million copies.
I give one star for this one since my title says it all, but it is ok for those who are already working on a personal business project, to keep them motivated. But then, Norman Vincent Peale, Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill and there are many more, do the job better. The key is to have a project. No book will give you that. I'd rather work along those lines and keep my faith in prayers. I dont really expect much out of this book.
Cracking the Millionaire Code: Your Key to Enlightened Wealth.......2007-05-15
I would not endorse this book
Money-making code breaking for future millionaires.......2007-01-19
Packed with meaningful anecdotes, clever little games and codes to crack, this book looks at wealth creation from a new perspective. As Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen concede, this is hardly your typical "get-rich quick" book, despite its businesslike title. With its focus on "enlightened" enterprise, destiny, "angels," inner circles, prisms and the guidance of a "Higher Power," this book is not for everyone. It is hampered by New Age slang and excess, invented buzz words and acronyms. However, for those looking for an alternative to the typical business text, it is as much a sincere ethereal self-help book as a means to wealth. It focuses on wealth creation for the sake of affording philanthropy and finding purpose. We recommend this to people with a spiritual bent who seek both meaning and millions.
More Fluff Courtesy of Bob Allen and Friend.......2006-12-30
About twenty-five years ago Robert G. Allen was making a name for himself as a real estate guru. His Nothing Down title was on the bestseller list and lots of people were hoping to make money in real estate with his techniques. While I was skeptical of his no money down concept, I never took him for a charlatan. He seemed pretty sincere about his concepts and his desire to help people. Well, things certainly have changed. His last four titles, starting with Multiple Streams of Income, are little more than advertising for his website and products. I'd like to think better of Robert Allen, but really, how can I after the garbage he's churned out? Serendestiny? C'mon, Bob. Tell me that was Mark Victor Hansen's idea, not yours. In all fairness, who are the people making these guys richer? It's us. We're all looking for the magic pill that's going to make us wealthy without having to struggle. These guys sure make it look easy, and, honestly, isn't that what we're looking for? Someone to reassure us that everything is going to be alright. "Just follow these five simple steps and you'll be raking in the dough in no time, just like Joe Success on page 153 did. Yep, he followed the program to the letter, and look what happened to him." We're all looking for the quick fix and these guys are all too happy to offer it to us. Shame on us for believing in this drivel.
Complete Waste of Time and Money.......2006-12-01
This book is a joke. TONS OF FLUFF! They go on and on and on about theories and stories of others who made money. The only substance it has, which is very little, is nothing new. In the first chapter of the book they tell you to go out and talk to friends and family to get them on your "team". They say to talk to 100 people if need be, and oh yeah, TELL THEM ALL TO BUY THE BOOK. If you want to learn about obtaining wealth, buy a business book. It's obvious these guys are just out to make money and waste people's time. Truly sad.
