Book Description

Whether it was at President Reagan's Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C., the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, or the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, Del Courtney's Orchestra has been a favorite of dancing and listening America since the Big Band Era. Del Courtney has enjoyed one of the most rewarding careers that music has ever offered to anyone - as his musical life span has extended over the Big Band Era of the 30s, 40s and 50s, through the rock craze, to the current nostalgic Big Band Sounds. Success grew as he became a favorite of the airwaves and dancing America; wherever he appeared - night clubs, hotels, theatres and major ballrooms: such renown spots as Coconut Grove Ambassador Hotel (Los Angeles), Palmer House, Blackhawk Restaurant (Chicago) Aragon-Trianon Ballrooms, Paramount Theatre (New York), Glen Island Casino (Long Island). During this period Del established many lifelong professional relations with virtually every name entertainer from Frank Sinatra on down. He has been quite a Talent Scout as well. He discovered Johnny Mathis and signed him for his KPIX - TV Show. While on radio, he spotted an office girl with an unusual wit, and a $75 a week salary. After a few side- splitting interviews on Radio KSFO, Phyllis Diller rocketed into night club and television stardom. Dave Brubeck credits Del with first inspiring him to play jazz, emerging as one of the greats in jazz. The original Kingston Trio dominated top-selling album lists after getting their acclaim on Del's show. Del also gave Hollywood a whirl. He appeared in "It Came From Beneath The Sea," "Chicago at Night" and "John Loves Mary." Del was a successful producer of National Television Shows after starring in "San Francisco Beat" and" Harbor Command." Being married at one time to Yvonne King of The King Sisters, he produced and co-hosted "The King Family" TV Show on ABC. In the 1960s, Del served as Administration Director and Entertainment Director, producing all half-time shows for the Oakland Raiders. His Raider Band was acclaimed the best in the NFL. His music was selected for the ''In-Flight Sound" on all United Airlines Flights and his albums were played aboard all flights of President Reagan's Air Force One. Del Courtney and his Orchestra surely set the mood and delight all musical ears and all toe-tapping feet!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice History.......2006-08-02

I enjoyed this book very much. Although I was surprised to receive it and find the print is huge-almost as if it's a "large print edition". And it's double spaced with big margins at the top & bottom of the pages making it a very easy read. I've never seen a book published quite like this.

However, the book is a great history of the life of Del Courtney, well known band leader who hailed from the San Francisco Bay Area and worked there in the orchestra, TV, radio and even TV franchise businesses. Plus later in life became the Administrative and Entertainment Director for the Oakland Raiders. He has 4 Super Bowl rings. He was married to Connie Haines and Yvonne King of the King Sisters. I wish he had more to say about his marriages and personal life-but he kept things pleasant and gave us lots of information on his years in the band business, with the Raiders and later his life in Honolulu, where he 'retired' and died.

    Book Description

Although it is appealing to think that fashion turns away from conventions, is this really the case? Or are "pioneering" designs simply part of a cyclical revival of forgotten fashions? Looking at some of the most influential designers of the twentieth century--from Yamamoto to Gaultier to Lagerfeld--Vinken considers the politics and philosophies that have been the driving force directing their sense of style. Vinken shows how fashion trends are informed by the past. Chanel, under the direction of Karl Lagerfeld, is viewed as the only fashion house to have remained fresh after one hundred years, yet is this success essentially proof of the self-referential qualities fashion has adopted? What inspired the fetish for labels at the end of the twentieth century? Answering these questions and many more, this thought-provoking book shows how beauty, gender, sexuality, commerce, and dandyism have persisted in defining the fashion system.

    Book Description

Grant Morrison's The Invisibles was the most ground-breaking and controversial comic book series of the last decade. A must-have for comics fans, this Guide features exhaustive, detailed analysis of the full six-year series as well as all-new, exclusive interviews with Morrison and many of the series' artists and editors.

Already featured in Disinformation: The Interviews and the accompanying TV series and DVD, Grant Morrison has been heavily promoted as a contemporary pop culture star, the first comics writer to be included as one of Entertainment Weekly's top 100 creative people in America. We will market the book aggressively to Morrison fan sites and comics, skate and punk zines.

Journalists and Invisibles fanatics Patrick Neighly and Kereth Cowe-Spigai reside in Bethesda, Maryland, and Orlando, Florida, respectively.

    5 out of 5 stars Chemical=anthropoid .......2006-02-10

"Anarchy For The Masses swims the living body junk brain universe of a chemical=anthropoid by Grant Morrison's era respiration-byte modem=cardiac. Grant Morrison ill-treats on the digital-chimpanzee's gene archive which was raped by this abolition world with the biocapturing mode." - Kenji Siratori, author of Blood Electric

3 out of 5 stars Needs more critical depth.......2005-09-01

This guide is better than no guide at all, given the (probably intentionally) confusing nature of many chapters within Grant Morrison's non-linear magnum opus. However, the page-by-page annotations are repetitive (I don't need *constantly* to be told that "Life as film is a recurring theme") and often assume the readers have spent their entire lives in a cave (I *know* who Ringo Starr and Richard Nixon are, thanks!). At the same time, missing from the annotations is any serious discussion (beyond brief mentions) of chaos magic, anarchist theory or other key themes and influences. The authors' one-paragraph reviews of each issue occasionally contain genuine insight, but more often focus on praising or nitpicking the artists' work, fanboy-style. Surely in such a profound work as *The Invisibles* it's the writing that's of primary importance?

This guide merits two extra stars: one for the helpful, editorially neutral issue-by-issue plot summaries which clear up many ambiguous moments in the series; and one for the engrossing Morrison interview at the end. Interested readers should consult the Invisibles section of Barbelith online and the Grant Morrison pages on Disinformation online; you'll find much more intelligent discussion than found in this guide.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-09-09

If you're a fan of THE INVISIBLES, you have to get this book! It really made sense of the maze that was the series. It's fun seeing the original creators comment on the entire series in the interviews. One of the better series guides I've seen.

3 out of 5 stars All and nothing at all.......2002-09-17

    ...or almost.

Fact is, this very well-designed book is divided up in small chapters - one for each Invisibles issue. Every chapter is in its turn composed of small interviews (the bulk of them being with artist Jimenez), two separate fan-like comments from the curators and an occasional small quote from Grant Morrison himself.
Finally, in the sidebars of each page, there is a very detailed comment to each relevant panel or phrase. "Very detailed" meaning that the authors even go to the lenghts of reminding the reader that "Marylin Monroe was a big sex symbol in the late Fifties and onward..." etc etc.

I actually liked this "take nothing for granted" approach, but with it come a number of problems. First and foremost, there are no visual references, so you have to keep the orginal Invisibles book at hand to follow the notes. Then, this much detail means lots of text, which in turn had to be printed very small to fit on the sidebars - reading it might be tiring to many.

The final interview with Grant Morrison is priceless, altough it replicates much stuff that you can easily find on the sites devoted to The Invisibles.

So is this book worth the buying? My answer is maybe not if you're already heavily into fringe counterculture, as you'll already know about everything there's to know. In any other case, go for it as it can make your Invisibles reading experience much more layered and interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Almost too shallow, but so necessary.......2002-07-27

A bit too shallow at times, but the amount of information in the book make it a definite must-read for anyone planning to crash-land into The Invisibles. The annotations are fabulous, the interview with Grant Morrison is a head trip and a half, and, generally, it's a delight of a book.

          1 out of 5 stars GURPS Space.......2007-05-12

This most recent version of GURPS SPACE had virtually nothing new in it in comparison to the previous books. I really felt that I wasted my money.

          5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-10

This book is great! It covers all about space campaigns, at any detail level you want. Worlds, Star maps, Races and etc.
          The book is beautiful, too!
It just don`t go deeper into building starships, but I think I know why. That is much more about engeneering and I bet SJG will soon release the Vehicle Builder in its 4th edition to help in this matter.
          Great book!

3 out of 5 stars What do you expect?.......2006-08-01

What you will get out of GURPS Space depends on what you are looking for. It does not have any stats for weapons or technology, no rules for spaceship construction and no rules for space combat. For that, Interstellar Wars is a better book, but neither are up to 3rd Edition standards (space combat is fairly boring as defined in IW).

Space is good for designing star systems and worlds, and has some decent material on alien life. If you want to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations, then this book is good.

If you want to build the spaceship that will take you there and be able to defend yourself when you meet hostile aliens, this is not the book.

That is about it. 3rd Edition Space is a better book.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but pretty good.......2006-06-26

This is the fourth iteration of GURPS Space. It's got a lot that's new, quite a bit that's appeared elsewhere in more primitive forms, and a few relics that have been recycled from GURPS Space 1, 2 & 3.

          Bad bits first:

The book recycles a small amount of faily bland and pointless text about interstellar societies and "generic" organisations in chapter 1 and expands on most of this information in chapter 7. Thus, some of this text is a bit redundant. It also includes the irritating joke organisation "Special Justice Group" (SJG, like the publisher, Steve Jackson Games).

There are no game statistics for equipment in the book at all, and no ship design system.

Steve Jackson Games uses the avoirdupois system in preference to metric. So do most Americans, of course, but it just seems unscientific for a scientific game book.

          Good Bits
The vast majority of the book is devoted to hard science concerns; possibile and miraculous technologies, world and starsystem generation, and alien life. These are excellent. The technology section contains no examples, but is nevertheless thought-provoking and useful. The worlds section is as accurate and up to date as the authors could make it, and is a vast improvement on all the prior GURPS spaces and, for that matter on any star generation system by anyone else. The same goes for the alien life chapter, which is more detailed than any other that I've seen.

The remainder of the book has solid advice on how to create, fine tune and run a space campaign, and sample templates for character creation. It's all good stuff.

Finally, should you buy this book? If all you want to know is "how does a 3rd Ed. TL8 gauss needler translate into a 4th Ed. weapon?" then no, because the book doesn't tell you that. But if you want to design and run a scientifically plausible, richly detailed space game for any games system, then yes, this book is definitely worth the money.

GURPS Space is one of the many competent supplements for Steve Jackson's Generic Universal Role Playing system.

Or, handy when you want to go haring around in spaceships and that sort of fun stuff. Mostly we used it as an adjunct to the other games we were playing at the time, but worth a look.

                    Ahem ...

This is one of the best roleplaying books I have ever read and certainly among the best for GURPS. If you want to create a pace-based science fiction campaign, this is the book for you whether you play GURPS or not. Everything is in here: spaceship design, alien races, solar systems, planetary governments ... all organised in a take-it-or-leave-it fashion. If something seems to techy to you - leave it out! If you want hard sci-fi with colony ships and no aliens, GURPS can oblige. If you prefer Flash Gordon to Carl Sagan, GURPS has the reactionless thrusters (scientifically divided into slow and fast) primed and ready for take off. If you are desperate for a REAL hard sci-fi setting, then GURPS Traveller maybe a better purchase but if you're itching to create your own strange new worlds, this is the book.

Generic in the best possible sense.

This book does wonders for a far future GURPS campaign. The world and ship generation techniques are excellent. Lots of cool gadgets too. The weak point of Space is it's lack of detail on creating alien races. But if it were more detailed they wouldn't have needed to make GURPS Aliens right?

5 out of 5 stars Practical Techniques to Boost Creativity.......2007-06-27

Author Michael Michalko delivers his best performance to date in this book. The book is filled with information on, and techniques for using, our creative processes. Many of the techniques are easy to learn, requiring only a little bit of practice to get used to them. Most of the book centers around: helping an individual generate many possible ideas about something, which will be critically evaluated at a later time; visualizing the problem and potential solutions; seeing from another's perspective, even the problem's in one case (quite effective sometimes); collaboration and creativity. This book already helped me deliver a 5 star essay on a very controversial subject. I followed its advice, producing as many ideas as possible in a short time, without rejecting any at first. Also, visualizing the data, as recommended, formed the basis for my later outline, which was complete enough that a rough draft was no work at all. So, for me, buying this book paid off already. I think anyone buying this will read it for a few minutes and then recognize they have a winner in their hands.

                          5 out of 5 stars I told you so.......2006-10-28

This book woke me up from my indifference toward creative thinking. My colleague at work recommended the book, so I bought it and read it expecting nothing much. I assumed creativity was something you were or were not. I can't believe how creative I've become since reading this book. This book has literally changed the way I the way I think and the way I look at the world. When I told my colleague about how I've changed, all he said was "I told you so."

5 out of 5 stars Together with 'Thinkertoys'...dynamic duo...consider them among the best in the genre!.......2006-07-17

The first time I encountered 'Thinkertoys' it was actually the first edition released during the early 90's, when it was also about the time I began to explore the various options with regard to my mid-life transition. In fact, I had initially spotted an interesting review in the Entrepreneur magazine.

I managed to trace the publisher & had immediately ordered the first 100 copies for my debut bookstore. It became the best seller in my store for many years. Then came 'Cracking Creativity' a few years later as well as the accompanying brainstorming card deck, Thinkpak, to 'Thinkertoys'.

What impressed me most is not so much the creativity tools outlined in both books. In fact, the most productive learning experiences I got out of both books are a few very important things, which I would like to share with readers.

Let's take a look at Thinkertoys. In the Introduction, the author started off with a visual puzzle: 'Can you identify the figure below?'

Only by shifting your focus, you can then see the hidden word within the figure.

In the author's own words, "...by changing your perspectives, you can expand your possibilities..."

Let's move to 'Cracking Creativity'. In the Introduction, the author introduced a simple arithmetic equation: What is half of thirteen?

The subsequent passages as outlined in Part I: Seeing What No One else in Seeing, & Strategy I: Knowing How to See, by the author revealed the secrets to getting many possible answers (or perspectives) to the above equation.

No creativity tool outlined in the above two books (or elsewhere in the world, for that matter) can help you to become more creative until you fully understand - & appreciate - what the author is trying to drive home in his two books.

In a nut shell, it basically boils down to one important thing: Use - & enhance - your power of vision! or power of observation!

The author may not be the first person to postulate this crucial aspect of creativity.

I would consider Leonardo da Vinci to be the first person to have understood & practised it religiously. He said, among a few other things, LEARN TO SEE THE WORLD. In fact, he put a lot of emphasis on using your senses, especially your sense of sight.

Edward de Bono had also broached this valuable concept in his groundbreaking series of lateral thinking books, starting with 'Mechanism of Mind' in the 70's.

I have always believed that you can't do things differently until you can see things differently.

Learning to see the world anew & from different perspectives is imperative if one wants to be more creative.

According to de Bono, creativity starts at the perceptual stage of thinking. He terms it, First Order Thinking. He added very beautifully: "This is where our perceptions & concepts are formed, & this is where they have to be changed. Most of the mistakes in thinking are inadequacies of perception rather than mistakes of logic."

The creativity tools, whether they are from the author's books or elsewhere, will then automaticlaly fall into place & make more sense when you have first exercised your power of vision or observation.

Using any tool is a piece of cake, but changing one's perception - & maintaining fluidity of perception as well as having multiple perceptions - takes concerted efforts.

It is also important to take note that when things (or tactics) don't seem to work out as planned, always remember to check out your observations of the world first. Simply ask:

                          - what do you CHOOSE to see?
                          - where do you DIRECT your attention?

The second most productive learning experience I got from the above two books is realising that all thoughts are simply feats of association &/or juxtapositions - & the crux of creativity (in fact, also learning) are making associations &/or juxtapositions. [Tom Peters, in his wonderful book, Liberation Management, drives home with this insightful nugget: "The essence of creation - in all endeavours - is chance connections between ideas and facts that are previously segregated. Entrepreneurship is the direct by-product of chance, of convoluted connections among ideas, needs and people." According to Leonardo da vinci, everything is connected to everything else. My question: CAN YOU SEE IT?] The creativity tools outlined by the author are specifically designed for this purpose.

The third most productive learning experience for me is understanding the differential between productive & reproductive thinking. To paraphrase the author: "...in productive thinking, one generates as many alternative approaches as one can, considering the least as well as the most likely approaches...in contrast, reproductive thinking fosters rigidity of thought..." More relevant aspects about the significance of & more specific strategies to develop productive thinking are excellently covered by the author in 'Cracking Creativity'.

To end this review, & in the light of what I have written, I would consider the author's two books as the dynamic duo...to be among the best in the genre!

                          5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2006-06-03
