Book Description

Any woman who's ever wanted to be queen for a day understands the appeal of that most magnificently impractical of accessories, the tiara. Once an aristocratic status symbol, more recently seen mainly in the bridal trousseau, the tiara today is enjoying a tongue-in-cheek style revival. In this gem of a book, Geoffrey Munn, jeweler by appointment to the British monarchy, presents both classic and contemporary interpretations of diadems and headdresses spanning two centuries. The featured designers include Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef, and Versace. From priceless pieces commissioned by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria to a punk-rock acrylic creation by Vivienne Westwood, the sumptuous photos and accompanying histories are sure to thrill royal watchers and riot grrls alike. Tiaras: Past & Present is published to accompany an exhibition, curated by the author, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

5 out of 5 stars Tiaras - always in good taste.... .......2007-05-13

Excellent adventure into an art form using precious metals and jewels to make the perfect man made crowning glory. The text and photos bring a historical context to enjoy the art and creativity this subject requires. The gems , the glitter and imagined glamour make this book a must have along with Geoffrey Munn's definative text published earlier "Tiara's : A History of Splendour" .

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-01-18

I was lucky enough to SEE the exhibition at Vic and Albert in London and that is where I got this book. Tiaras were absolutely fabulous and the book transportes the magic and splendor very well. I gave this book to a friend who owns antique jewellery shop and am thinking about getting another copy for myself.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-08-12

Wow! I just got this book, and G.Mann's huge other tiara book. This one is based on the exhibit that was done at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and contains not only old tiaras, but modern ones done just for the exhibit. There is very little overlap between the two books, so I was not disappointed. The photos are huge, clear, and show lots of detail. There's also lots of good information. The other, bigger book is a better deal at $47, but this one's no slouch either, and the price and size would make it a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Past & Present.......2004-02-13

I recived this book as a gift. It was one of two books on tiaras by G.C. Munn, this book gives you a look at what kind of Tiaras are being made and worn by todays Women. The Photos are of good quality and sharpness You can see the Craftmanship in each piece.
If you ever wanted to have your own Tiara this is the closest thing to it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous!.......2003-06-21

So wonderful I had to buy copies for all my women freinds- and we can't shut up about it still. This is a nice overview of the tiara's form and history, and while it doesn't cover the serious art history that Munn's other big fat tiara book does, it's mighty pretty to look at. And it'll make girl a lot pickier about the rhinestone crowns she buys to go to dance clubs! I recommend this, and then buy yourself a few tiaras to wear with your jammies- every girl needs one or two ;-) .

Book Description

In its eight short years, the comic strip Mutts has won the National Cartoonists Society's coveted Comic Strip of the Year Award, its author Patrick McDonnell has earned the NCS's Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year Award, and the strip has topped a circulation of 500 papers. So, what now for Mutts'That's exactly what the title of McDonnell's latest cartoon collection asks. What Now' chronicles the most recent humorous happenings of Earl the dog and his feline friend Mooch. As usual, the endearing pair can be counted on for laughs and charming adventures. In this latest collection, Mooch professes his love . . . for a little pink sock. "How can I take you seriously with a little pink sock in your mouth'" asks Earl. "This from a guy who wears a "Shnoopy" collar," retorts Mooch. Mooch's affection for his sock is so deep, he sings little songs about it. But the love affair comes to an abrupt end when his pal Earl buries it to try to end the obsession. Fortunately for Mooch, socks come in pairs, and he's soon reunited with "its twin sister."Earl and Mooch put their comic spin on a wide range of subjects, from napping and poetry to summer vacations and Christmas anticipations. Interspersed with its charming humor are more weighty messages on issues important to McDonnell, such as animal shelters, saving our endangered species, and other animal-protection topics. What Now' follows Mutts' well-established tradition of delivering creative style and the charm of yesteryear unlike any other strip on the funny pages today.

I'm a quite new fan of MUTTS. First approach was in Houston airport in some newspaper forgotten on a chair. Colorful and simple...one line in wich Bip tells Bop "Green is so yesterday", was so hilarious for me I couldn't understand why...so I looked forward to read more stripes online afterwards.

I just received my first book of MUTTS (No 7) "WHAT NOW". After reading the first pages, I can tell you that after a hard day, or even if you are kinda depressed or blue....this will cheer you up for sure!.
Definetely Earl and Mooch are the best!! . . . in this very issue you'll see the love at first sight of the "lil pink sock".

Inocent, simple and just delightful...!

Greetings to ya'll MUTT fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great as always.......2004-08-07

I always enjoyed the Mutts book and this is great as the others. The every day stories of the dog Earl and cat Mooch (inclusive owners and some other animals such as woofie, crabby, and squirrel) are cute, innocent, funny and kind of philosophical. I just love that even I read every strip at least five times, I can still smile /laugh about them.

With creative and very apt spoofs on yoga vernacular, MOMMY YOGA deftly and humorously blends yoga with mommy life. Complemented by colorful and hip illustrations by graphic artist Susan McKenna, this collection of 50 poses is the perfect gift book for every mom and her three best friends from playgroup.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yoga Mommas, this is a great read!.......2007-05-22

When this book arrived, I sat down on my comfy chair and read each and every "mommy asana" in one sitting. Then I read it again. And again. Then I shared the book with my neighbors and friends. We've never laughed so much. It was wonderful.

I found myself nodding along while reading about these hilarious postures. Some of Julie's "poses" were dead on. I had thought I was the only mother who experienced a few of these until now.

I absolutely love this book and I recommend it to all mothers, whether you are yoga-moms or not. It's witty, humorous and so very true. I plan on giving this as my new signature baby shower gift. Definitely a must read!

5 out of 5 stars perfect for any moms.......2005-11-10

I just had my first baby in June and I was given this book by my grandmother. I cannot think of a more perfect book! It can be read over and over again and still be hillarious each time. New and experienced mothers alike will get a kick out of this book. It makes the perfect shower gift!

5 out of 5 stars A mommy from Los Angeles.......2005-11-03

This is a very cute book. It's a perfect stocking stuffer and/or extra baby shower gift!

4 out of 5 stars Motherhood: A Never-Ending Contortion.......2005-09-13

"Any mom who's tried to answer the phone while nursing the baby and keeping the toddler out of the oven is a Mommy Yoga practitioner. Any mom who's ever carried three small children, a gallon of milk, and a jumbo bag of diapers across a crowded parking lot is a Mommy Yoga enthusiast." - From the book

As any Mom knows, bending, stretching, and contorting are all in a day's work. Whether doing the Monkey, the Kangaroo, or the popular Don't Make Me Stop This Car, Moms naturally morph into the roles her little ones need (demand!), and in the process, strike amusingly awkward poses.

Mommy Yoga: The 50 Stretches of Motherhood is a hilarious book by Julie Tilsner highlighting the overextensions Moms face every day. Lavish, colorful illustrations by Susan McKenna accompany Tilsner's humorous prose, providing comic release for harried Moms.

Some of the poses you'll find in Mommy Yoga include:

Downward Fish - With feet firmly planted on the floor, bend at the waist and extend your arms into the toilet bowl. Scoop out all plastic toys. Rinse as needed.

No Go - Dressed and ready to go to an appointment, hold baby on your hip and thrust one leg out the front door with confidence that, today, you'll be on time. Freeze and hold when baby suddenly throws up all over herself and you. Breathe through your mouth. Regard now-smiling baby and turn, slowly, until you're back inside. Resolve to repeat pose in fresh clothes, or finish up by reaching into your purse for your cell phone.

Horse/Downward-Facing Frog - Start on your hands and knees, eyes looking down. Lower your body to the floor to allow one child onto your back for Horse pose. Let their weight smash you to the floor with your arms and legs splayed. Hold for 5 minutes or until your spouse comes (to) your rescue.

Laugh-out-loud in some parts, the book Mommy Yoga serves as a delightful tribute to the balancing act of Motherhood. Moms of young children will no doubt think or say "Oh my God, that is *so* true!" At least, I did!

This would make a lovely gift for new Moms, as well as a gift for Mother's Day. Mom's of small children will be amused no matter *what* holiday or occasion it's received!

Note: I was all set to give this book 5 stars, but while reviewing it, I noticed that the Horse/Downward Yoga page omits the word "to", which I put in parenthesis above. It's a shame that this charming book is marred by such a glaring editorial oversight.

Winner of the Best Director Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.

A phenomenon since it opened in New York in the summer of 1998, and on its way to becoming a cult classic, Pi is a work of dazzling originality-a science fiction thriller about the haunting journey into the genius mind of a renegade visionary.A brilliant and troubled man, Max Cohen is on the verge of the most important discovery of his life. As Max verges on a solution, chaos is swallowing the world around him. He is pursued by an aggressive Wall Street firm set on financial domination as well as by a Kabbalah sect intent on unlocking the secrets behind its ancient holy texts. Max races to crack the code, hoping to defy the madness that looms before him. In succeeding, he uncovers a secret everyone is willing to kill for. Also included with the screenplay is a full journal of how Darren Aronofsky made this award-winning film on a minuscule budget of $60,000, providing practical advice and inspiration to film students and offering film buffs rare insight into how an independent film is made.

4 out of 5 stars The Joy of Filming: Guerilla Style!.......2000-02-21

Go see the FILM FIRST before you read this...it's a guide to fellow screenwriters as well as an enjoyable journal of guerilla style filmmaking. I just wished it would cover the dates and stories of what happened AFTER the sundance awards. It's covers alot of personal tribulations but not enough on the financial side of making an independent film. A cute little smooth cover but a bit overpriced, i thought.

5 out of 5 stars Two Words: GREAT BOOK.......1999-12-14

Not only does this book have the screenplay for the movie, but it also has the journal entries form the director to show you what he had to go through to make this a perfect film. Very interestingly written, you can make visuals in your head just by the details the writer/director goes into. I would recommend this book to any one with an open mind. And when your done reading this book go out to the video store and see the movie for your self. Remember: Keep an open mind!

    Book Description

Some people will do anything for money.  Take Brian Zembic, recipient of the world's most notorious boob job.  After a fellow gambler bet $100,000 that Brian wouldn't subject himself to the breast implants he so admired in women, Brian found himself going under the knife to become a 38C--and $100,000 richer.

Anchored by this incredible tale, gambling expert Michael Konik introduces readers to the quirky subculture of high rollers and hustlers in dozens of other outrageous true stories profiling gamblers who make wagering a way of life.

You'll meet the man who turned $10,000 into $17 million with a pair of dice, the man responsible for determining the point spread of the Super Bowl, and the world's most notorious golf hustler.  In addition to the bizarre and hilarious escapades of hard-core gamblers, Konik shares insider tips for how to score more in comps than you lose at the tables, how to identify casino games that should be avoided, and how to gain a legal advantage over the house.

In this rollicking collection of stories, Konik celebrates the glamour, glitz, and excitement of gambling culture in Vegas and beyond, giving readers a behind-the-tables look at one of the nation's most lucrative entertainment industries.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting reading...........2007-07-09

Overall I liked this book quite a bit. Very interesting stories, all bite sized and well written. The last half dozen stories are about poker--I'm not a player so these didn't hold much interest.

    5 out of 5 stars Man with $100,000 Breasts.......2006-03-29

I had heard about this guy a long time ago and finally found this book. After reading the first chapter, I was a bit dissapointed that the story of the man with the $100,000 breasts was over, but to my suprise, the stories just got better. Each chapter tells a different gambling story, which I must say, were all great stories.

I think a lot of people won't read this book because of the title, but it is a shame because the book is that good. I showed it to some coworkers and they thought I was nuts for reading a book about what the title depicts. I tried to explain to one of them how good it was but many turned there nose up without trying it. The one who did try it out read the first 3 chapters and said-- I want it when your done!!!

Very entertaining and unlike the previous review, I think anybody would enjoy this book. You don't have to be a hard core gambler.

One last note- I am not a book reader. I have read very few books, but i have to tell you, I could not put this one down and finished it within a week, reading a couple of chapters before bed each night. I only wish there were more stories!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, you'll wish it was longer. .......2005-12-12

This is one of the many "gambling milieu" books that have hit the scene over the course of the past few years; although, unlike many of the others, Konik's effort features strong writing and a furious pace. Upon finishing it, I took a look at the page numbers because I couldn't believe it was over. It wasn't that it was too short, the real problem was that it was too good. In small chip size pieces, Konik addresses the infamous world of gambling. His coverage is far better than that of the average commentator as he includes horse racing, greyhounds, blackjack, sports betting, and golf hustling within his narrative. To say this one is fascinating is an understatement. A better description is that it will even, dare I say, appeal to the general public--and, indeed, it has. The title essay concerns crazy proposition man Brian Zembic, and it may well be the best of the compilation. After all, how many people become quasi-transvestites for 100 grand? Well, that's the terrain you're in once you open these pages, and you'll be grateful that Konik did such a magnificent job of immersing himself in it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and entertaining.......2005-01-29

A great collection of gambling related stories, with strange but likeable characters. Each story is different, but fun to read. Even if you have no knowledge of some of the activities or games covered, the stories are enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2004-09-14

Konik is the same guy on all the poker televsion shows. He obviously has a lot of connections in the gambling world which gives him great stories to tell. There's all sorts of entertaining stuff to amuse you in this collection. I like the stories about greyhound racing (laugh out loud funny) and the ones about playing the World Series of Poker. This is a must for anyone who likes gambling stories.

Making "good, fast, frequent decisions... better than those with whom you compete," say J. Edward Russo and Paul J.H. Schoemaker, is a critical skill in today's business climate. They additionally believe it's a skill that all of us can learn, much like a proper golf swing. In Winning Decisions, they lay out a four-step process that constitutes "a broad, conceptual framework" applicable in virtually any situation where a decision is needed. Russo and Schoemaker, consultants and professors who collaborated on an earlier book about the roadblocks to proper decision making, turn their attention here to making decisions "with the head, not the gut." Their program is divided into four phases fully explained in their own sections: Framing, Gathering Intelligence, Coming to Conclusions, and Learning from Experience. In total, they reveal a disciplined system that will benefit anyone looking to make better decisions in just about any situation. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Business revolves around making decisions, often risky decisions, usually with incomplete information and too often in less time than we need. Business revolves around making decisions, often risky decisions, usually with incomplete information and too often in less time than we need. Executives at every level, in every industry, are confronted with information overload, less leeway for mistakes, and a business environment that changes rapidly. 5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2006-11-10

This book is a follow-up to their Decision Traps book, which was also very good. Couple Russo & Schoemaker's work with the work by Rogers and Bienko from "Who Has the D? How Clear Decision Roles Enhance Organizational Performance"(HBR, Jan'06) and you've got a complete methodology that can be used effectively and works cross-culturally.

    Excelent Book
Help us on the day to day decisions as on the "turning points" decisions.
Make us broaden our horizons when stuck in front of difficult entrepreneurials problems to solve.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves more than five stars.......2004-12-30

This is an excellent book, one of the best I've ever read about decision making. It takes a structured approach to making decisions and discusses the "how" of decision making. It gives a bunch of ideas to use, mostly questions to help the decision maker focus his or her attention on the process of getting the decision right under uncertainty and time contraints.

The book, as great as it is, has one short coming to my way of thinking: it gives very little attention to intuitive decision making. I think that the authors have concentrated on deliberative decision making with the idea in mind that the process will ultimately become intuitive when practiced enough. Perhaps so. However, I would very highly recommend another book that talks about intuitive decision making, Educating Intuition by Hogarth. This excellent book may help a reader learn how to make the deliberative techniques part of the the intuitive decision making process.

3 out of 5 stars Buy Smart Choices instead.......2004-09-17

This book is okay, but it's poorly structured and repetitive. It doesn't offer a clear, systematic process for making decisions. I think Smart Choices is a far, far better book. Simpler, better structured, easier to work with.

5 out of 5 stars Decisions are tough.......2002-08-13

I was considering to buy this book, but I had a hard time making up my mind...
