Colors of Enchantment: Theater, Dance, Music, and the Visual Arts of the Middle East
ASIN: 9774244672 |
Book Description
This book brings a new approach to the study of the arts of the Middle East. By dealing in one volume with dance, music, painting, and cinema, as experienced and practiced not only within the Middle East but also abroad, Images of Enchantment breaks down the artificial distinctions -- of form, geography, 'high' and 'low' art, performer and artist -- that are so often used to delineate the subjects and processes of Middle Eastern artistic culture.
The eighteen essays in this book cover themes as diverse as Bedouin dance, the music of Arab Americans, cinema in Egypt and Iran, Hollywood representations of the Middle East, and contemporary Sudanese painting. The contributions come from scholars and critics and from the artists themselves. Together, they present a wide-ranging and holistic view of the arts in their social, political, anthropological, and gender contexts.

In Front Row/Backstage, Mario Testino's relaxed photos capture the fantasy of the high-fashion world. They take readers to recent fashion shows and are organized in an almost play-by-play manner. In the book's introduction, Vogue editor Anna Wintour reminds readers how Testino's signature style is clearly visible in his portraits of the late Princess Diana: "Although we had seen a million pictures of Diana, we had never seen her looking so relaxed, accessible and modern as when Mario photographed her." This accessible feeling is one that Testino projects onto all of his subjects. Here Testino shows the backstage preparation for the top designers' runway shows, the photographers preparing, the audience being seated, the models dressing, and the show itself. He has captured some of the most groundbreaking collections and innovative presentations, such as Alexander McQueen's flooded runway and his winter collection, during which snow poured down onto all of the models. Other noted shows include Yohji Yamamoto, Givenchy, Chloe, Christian Dior, and John Galliano. The moments Testino captures are timeless: they seem to hold so much beauty and effortless style that they feel current. Only a peek at the date of a show reveals that some images are from many collections ago. The action and movement of the shots give a whole new life to past and present visions of our fashion gurus and icons. --Amra Brooks
Book Description
Have a seat in the highly coveted front row to share an up-close view of whos wearing what on the catwalk. Then be rushed backstage to glimpse the chaotic, bawdy world behind the scenes of such fashion houses as Lacroix, Dior, Givenchy, Chanel, and Versace, to name a few. This beautiful volume captures the jetset-paced rhythm of the international fashion scene.

Being there.......2000-02-25
I think Amazon's review comes close to capturing my sentiments about this book. Yes it's grainy, that's what the shows feel like with all of the smoke and noise and haste of all the magazine editors swooping in and out again for the next venue (did you read Suzy Menkes' Preface?); I find this to be a truthful documentary on what a fashion show IS. As far as Joesmoe taking these pictures...was HE there to do it? Only disappointment: where is that splashy production quality one associates with the jetset fashion world? Hint: is the next project going to be the longawaited book of masculine nudes!
i'm straight and i love your book.......1999-11-30
like his last book, testino explores the subcultures of society, this time the catwalks of fashion capitals. sure we may have seen this subject attemted before, however, testino's eye is less forgiving, bringing us the gritty realism of supermodeldom. long live testino
I wish I could give it NO stars at all!.......1999-11-27
The pics are AWFUL-extremely grainy black and whites,I mean I suppose they're meant to appear that way but WHY I haven't a clue. They just look blurry and EXTREMELY grainy to me.And they look like they could have been taken by any average Joe or Jane off the street.Furthermore, you can barely make out the people, and definitely not the fashions.I actually returned this book,I hated it so.Obviously,I do NOT reccomend it.Mario Testino's OTHER book, however, called Any Objections,is really cool and fun.It has a priceless shot of a lesbian trio of models, including my fav,Jenny Shimizu(plus Alice Temple-cool tattoo!-and some other gorgeous one I don't know the name of,but she has a cool lip ring...).By all means, buy that one.But don't waste your money on this one.
Mario is back!!.......1999-10-24
And again, with a great book. He is one of the best photographers in the world. Hey Mario, when's your new book coming out?!
When is your next book coming out?.......1999-10-24
Great book, can't wait for the next to come out. Great photographer

Blood Sweat And Tears: Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned to Love Fashion
ASIN: 3865210929
Release Date: 2005-04-15 |
Book Description
Description: Back Stage & Front Row is an all-access pass to the heady world of fashion and glamour, via the eyes of Gauthier Gallet. For almost 10 years, Gallet scanned behind-the-scenes and the front-rows at the ready-to-wear and couture shows in Paris, Milan, New York, and Tokyo, as well as some of the most star-laden parties of the past decade. Uncontrived, personal images, his photos show fabulous untouchables to be surprisingly human. These images are documents of our times, a compilation of encounters, and a continuous expression of Gallet's great talent. His uncalculated photographs reveal the strength of his subjects and capture, in a split-second, the "now," the moment. His unique working relationship with models, designers, and celebrities and their mutual trust is reflected in this collection of beautifully reproduced and timeless images. Back Stage & Front Row is at once a documentary of Gallet's work and a testimony to his great talent.

Book Description
Nick Fury's got a job that needs doing - in Russia. The kind of suicide mission any sane man wouldn't ponder for a second. And that's exactly why he needs the Punisher. Searching for a deadly retrovirus whose sale on the black market could bring the world to its knees, Frank Castle penetrates a Russian nuclear silo...and comes face-to-face with the Mongolian! Collects Punisher #13-18.
Customer Reviews:
Mother Russia Ain't No Lady.......2007-05-18
This book departs from Frank Castle's anti-Mafia Jihad. Here, US super-spy Nick Fury recruits the Punisher to infiltrate a Russian ICBM silo to recover a very important package. The dark, cynical take on US intelligence and military command is well done, especially in this era of Bu$h lies about WMD, Iraq-9/11-Al Qaeda links.
Artist Dougie Brathwaite's work is a bit too sketchy for my tastes. The Punisher character is best rendered in a realistic Steve Dillon fashion or a moody, noirish Tim Bradstreet version. The art isn't bad, it's just not very good.
But the story is well paced and plotted with a killer twist at the end. Read it, you'll like it.
interesting change for The Punisher.......2007-03-11
I don't want to give away the plot of this book, but The Punisher's mission in this one is a little different than in most. The story definitely won't disappoint you. Ennis' style is just as good as in any of his other books.
Very fast paced and entertaining.......2005-12-18
I was new to the punisher series...having bought the last episode of up is down and black is white i was a little curious about the title, so on my trip to the bookstore i picked up mother russia and bought it. It was an amazing read...garth ennis was born to write this book. Filled with action, humor...and in a weird way sentimentality...ennis's ideas sometimes feel recycled from preacher though...and its not altogether bad...but a little more would go a long way
the art was excellent....baithwraite's punisher seemed aggressive even in panels where there was no action...like a caged animal waiting to strike....there was a certain beauty to it, a certain grit to the faces and expressions...perhaps he is the best artist for this title after dillon. cant wait for more
Good Story.....Not So Good Art........2005-11-27
Another great Punisher story arc written by Garth Ennis(Preacher, Hellblazer).
This TPB is about the Frank Castle aka the Punisher taking on a seemingly impossible mission which involves rescuing a 6 year-old-girl who's carrying a deadly virus. Punisher also comes face to face with the Mongolian(why do the villian names have to involve their nationalties, like the Russian from Welcome back, Frank....just wondering). It was a very well written story, which also shows us a softer side of old Frankie as he tries to save 6-year-old girl who reminds him of his own little girl died at a mobster shootout. But the usual humor I've seen in the previous Punisher series that Ennis wrote was little to none at times in the MAX series. I hope I see more of his humor in future Punisher books.
My only criticism for this book is the ark by Dougie Braithwaite, nothing personal, I just don't think his style really work with this story, then again, that's just me. I personally think Steve Dillon is the best man for the job, he draws the best Punisher.
This definitely worth buying if you're big fan of either Garth Ennis or Punisher, but if you are looking for the type of story and art in Welcome Back Frank, then you're out of luck.
Punisher MAX vol. 3: Mother Russia.......2005-09-14
this was a great title. awesome story with tie-ins to current events. Highly reccomended.

Book Description
A sidesplitting compendium that pays tribute to those individuals whose scientific achievements cannot or should not be reproduced.
Everyone knows about the Nobel Prizes, those prestigious awards that recognize the world's most talented and innovative minds. Unfortunately, not all of the hopeful thinkers and academics around the globe can become Nobel Laureates, but some are lucky enough to win the esteemed Ig Nobel Prize instead. Their unbelievable accomplishments are now documented in glorious detail in The Ig Nobel Prizes: The Annals of Improbable Research.
Drawn from the world's wackiest actual scientific research, The Ig Nobel Prizes demonstrates the extreme measures people will take in the quest for knowledge. Recent Ig Nobel honorees include:
* The professor who won the Ig Nobel Prize in Physics for a study proving that toast falls buttered side down more often.
* The Southern Baptist Church of Alabama, which won the Ig Nobel Prize in Mathematics for devising a formula to determine how many Alabamans will go to Hell.
* The Australian man who successfully patented the wheel, and the Australian Patent Office that granted it. For this act, they were jointly awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in Technology.
This hilarious book features these endeavors and many more, along with photographs from the annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremonies at Harvard University. An entertaining exhibition of brains and determination, The Ig Nobel Prizes is the ideal gift for anyone who first wants to laugh and then wants to think.
Customer Reviews:
A great idea, executed with mediocrity.......2007-09-09
This book is full of really great, really funny (mostly) scientific studies--but not all the way through. At times, it's quirky and hilarious; at others, it's just kind of there.
Most of the stories are interesting, but the writing's not that great and gets in the way of it all sometimes. It's loaded with clumsy epimone, erratic spacing, and a rampant glazing over of facts.
Then there's the appendix that lists all of the winners of past Ig Nobel Prize ceremonies, most of which were funnier-sounding than many of the ones that the book explored more fully.
I'm glad I read this, but I don't think it's a five-star book--or even a four-star one.
It would really be funny if it wasn't all so serious ,true and expensive........2007-07-19
The worlds of Academia,Military ,Politics,Arts and Science provide much greatness for mankind and are often recognized with with Nobel prizes. These same worlds have often produced unimaginable blunders which can only be rewarded with disgust which is so well deserved. Then ,there are those accomplishments, which we can read about in this book, which deserve their own special kind of recognition;namely the Ig Nobel Prize.
The world of Academia seems to have a virtual stranglehold on this sort of thing and it is not surprising that it is people from that world who have come to recognize and reward it.
In most cases ,no harm is done to the public. The people who produce these accomplishments never become discouraged.Rather, they continue to search for and are encouraged to obtain grants in order to produce even more and greater things, unfortunately even more deservingly of Ig Nobel Prizes. Therefore; it would seem to be likely that AIR will never run short of material. There were a couple of awards that I particularly enjoyed.
Including Dan Quale under Education may be an anamoly;but what other category could include his likes.Whatever you call the pronouncements he makes;you've got to agree they are colossal and seem to be effortless on his part. Even Yogi Berra would have trouble competing with him.I'm sure he has uttered enough to fill a book.
How can you dispute a well conceived thought process that produces a statement that will survive the ages;
"If we do not succeed,we run the risk of failure."
Or ,if you still have doubts, how about this?
"I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and
democracy,but that could change."
Then again,he must have done a lot of research to come up with this;
"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the
polls."
Canadians often come up short in things like this and probably because they have the lack of vision coupled with the tendancy to turn to the government for creative thinking. However in this case AIM certainly went to the right place to find "The Sociology of Canadian Donut Shops".Where better than York University, that has been honored with this motto;"If you can use a fork, you can graduate York".
A great summertime read, unless you belong to Academia;then it is a source of profound inspiration.
Research that appears absurd, almost always is, but sometimes there is a potential gold nugget.......2006-08-23
While the criteria for receiving an Ig Nobel prize:
*) An achievements that cannot or should not be reproduced.
*) An achievement must first make you laugh and then make you think.
seems to render them fodder for the silly bin, there is a very serious side. Many of the major scientific achievements down through history could have been considered candidates for an Ig Nobel prize. Examples include:
*) The claim that stones fell from the sky, which was ridiculed by Thomas Jefferson.
*) The claim that the Earth revolved around the sun which was considered an unarguable fact for centuries.
*) The weighing of the air still considered a joke by many.
Most of the research described in this book is clearly absurd and will always remain that way. However, there are a few of the Ig Nobel prizes that may be the first step towards significant results. My favorite is the conclusion reached by Joel Slemrod of the University of Michigan Business School and Wojiech Kopczuk of the University of British Columbia. It is summed up in the simple statement:
There is abundant evidence that some people will themselves to survive in order to live through a momentous event. Evidence from estate tax returns suggests that some people will themselves to survive a bit longer if it will enrich their heirs."
The idea that you can will yourself to live longer is certainly significant in the study of life prolongation techniques.
I am in complete agreement with the awarding of the prizes, I found the research leading to the awards amusing. However, after I thought about it a bit, it was clear that it was not so easy to dismiss some of it as good for nothing more than a laugh.
Silly Science (& Some Serious Stuff).......2005-04-28
Virtually all of the topics treated are a hoot to read, though this sometimes owes more to the comedic skill of the writers than the to the nature of each subject itself.
Case in point: Because of the tall coconut tree in our backyard in Kahuku, Hawaii, the first topic I read was the study of the physics of falling coconuts, finding it humorously presented while still of serious importance. Most people, not living near coconut trees, and even some natives in the tropics, seem not to take falling coconuts seriously, but one fell from our tree, rolled down one of the long leaves, carrying it far enough from the tree to leave an 8" diameter hole in the roof of a sturdy gazebo, which could just as easily have been our neighbor's shed (or head).
To me, one of the more interesting accounts was of Dr. Cecil Jacobsen, a noted fertility researcher with whom I attended church for years in northern Virginia, who had decided to use his own sperm to impregnate many dozens of women, while telling them the semen was from other anonymous donors. The IgNobel Prize given to Dr. Jacobsen may not have seemed humorous to Cecil or his unwitting sperm recipients.
You'll find a treasure trove of wacky and fascinating matters wittily presented in this collection, and you'll probably find yourself reading it aloud to your friends and watching them crack up (or maybe just watching their jaws drop). Some of the material is appropriate for all ages. (My 10-year-old grandson loved the study of Nosepicking Among Adolescents.)
Is Science Funny? You Bet!.......2004-01-08
I have kept up with the 'Annals of Improbable Research' for several years, and must say that this book reflects the best of the highbrow, yet offbeat sense of humor found in 'AIR'.
For those unfamiliar, the Ig Nobel prizes are awarded every year for "achievements that cannot or should not be reproduced" in an elaborate spectacle of a ceremony at Harvard University. Among the participants are many genuine Nobel Prize winners, proving beyond doubt that scientists do have a sense of humor.
There is something for everyone in this book, even for those who hate science; in fact especially for those who hate science. The subjects coast gracefully from the bizarre ("Elevator Music Prevents the Common Cold") to the absolute fringe of science ("The Effects of Ale, Garlic, and Soured Cream on the Appetites of Leeches"; the sour cream was the biggest appetite stimulant, by the way). There are subjects you would have never thought of (unless you are a scientist with way too much time and Federal grant money on your hands) from levitating frogs to "Chicken Plucking as Measure of Tornado Wind Speed". The subject matter is dizzying and amusing.
I eventually settled on a four star rating for a couple of reasons. First, in a majority of cases, these studies are supported through tax dollars, and I generally resent the glorification of wasted money, which this book surely is in great, if unintentional, part (only a small percentage of these studies have genuine follow on benefits; most were clearly done for square-filling publication in the 'publish or perish' world of academia). Second, the politically motivated selection of some recipients, notably Edward Teller, is an undeserved slap at scientists who did and do work on defense projects (where a huge number of genuine scientific advances actually occur) by what is an obviously smug class of academics, who clearly seek to advance their own political agenda. I find that to have tarnished what would have otherwise been a superior work of science reporting and humor.
Despite my reservations, I overall recommend the book, as it does generally meet its stated goals of making a person laugh and think.

This book offers what the videos can't, ant that's a short cut to some of the funniest films of all time -- Monkey Business (1931), Duck Soup (1933), and A Day at the Races (1937) -- scripted by some of the wittiest screenwriters Hollywood ever produced.
In addition to a generous number of stills from each movie, this bumper edition also includes a cast and production crew list for movie buffs as well as an Introduction by Karl French.

MArx Brothers Screenplays.......2000-05-15
Just watching a Marx Brothers movie leaves some people feeling like they've been delightfully spun around until they are dizzy with laughter. There is so much that one can miss because they are too busy spitting out their drinks in a moment of surprise that they might miss a few moments of pure genius dialogue. When you read the screenplays you get all of it, every word, line and phrase...every sarcastic remark, every surealistic statement, every wise crack. And when you are done reading the screenplays, you are left in awe of what you had just experienced....pure comic perfection.

Customer Reviews:
The King Lives.......2004-11-11
Having acted with Elvis in Jailhouse Rock, I remember many of the images in this book. I like to look through this book over and over to keep my memories alive. The book is a great item to have for every Elvis fan and people that would like to find out more about the King. I love the layout and the quality of the pictures! My thumbs up for this book, Elvisly yours, Jennifer Holden
Elvis Presely : A Life In Pictures.......2004-05-14
This is a beautiful book dedicated to Elvis. I was looking for an Elvis picture book and I am very happy with this. I only wish there was some more information.
However, this is a picture book, and not really meant as a biography of words.
25th Anniversary Tribute.......2003-09-17
Since most of Elvis' life was over before mine ever began, the only way I can understand the fascination with his life is by seeing his life in pictures. To be honest, I was rather impressed with this collection. Not only do you see his entire life in pictures, there are many exclusive pictures you won't find in any other collection.
What DK has literally done is given fans a memorable collection at an affordable price. This book has a classic feel while also showing Elvis at his prime. The truth is, if you've never understood the fascination with Elvis, you will after reading this comprehensive volume.
This is a unique collection of over 600 photographs. You will find archive pictures, news photographs, autographed photographs, rare memorabilia, movie stills and never-before-published pictures. If you are interested in the details of Elvis' life, you will enjoy reading the detailed caption tidbits sprinkled throughout this well-organized visual feast.
This celebration is organized into ten chapters:
Child & Teenager (1935-1955)
The Sun Years (1954-1956)
Superstardom (1956-1957)
The King (1957-1958)
Army Days & After (1958-1961)
In the Movies (1960-1969)
Relaxing (1967-1973)
TV & Vegas (1968-1969)
Elvis on Tour (1970-1977)
Elvis Lives: The Legend Continues
Since I have mostly seen pictures from later in his life, I was personally surprised by the sheer magnetism of his younger years. In a way, this volume spares us from the reality of his rapid decline by highlighting the high points of his life and only briefly touching on the later years. There is a list of "facts, figures and statistics" on the life of Elvis at the end of the book which will be appreciated by the true fan.
Who knew that in 1957 Elvis was promoting "Teddy Bear Eau De Parfum" or "Elvis Presley Lipstick." The pictures of "Elvis in the Army" are quite interesting and you can also read about how Priscilla met Elvis when she was only 14 in Germany. There is a small section on his life with Prinscilla. Want to see what Elvis looks like with a beard or see pictures of him doing karate? This is your book.
An affordable way to have your own "Elvis Photo Album."

Waste of MONEY!.......2003-01-16
To think that a publication from Dorling Kindersley would be at least something worthwhile. But I was fooled.
This book is a lame attempt at "celebrating"? Elvis' death 25 years later.
(I thought one's death should be commemorated and not celebrated - oh well Dorling Kindersley is actually HAPPY that Elvis is dead so they can cash in on the poor man's demise).
The photo quality is pathetic!
The information is rather dull and uninviting.
I wasted so much money on this book thinking it would be educational or at least "fun". I was wrong on both accounts.
This got me thinking: I went to check Dorling's other publications and I was right!
All their other books are beautiful compared to this cheap and made-quick Elvis book.
I guess they did not want to spend any decent money to make a real good book!
Hey Dorling next time why don't use a real expert in the Elvis world to put together a book for you ... and make sure you invest at least a few dollars in printing like your other books.
Elvis may be dead --- but he deserves some kind of respect.
I suggest that people do not buy this book .. but rather go to a bookstore or library and flip through it.
Don't waste any money on this 25th Anniversary Disaster!
Very good but not definitive.......2002-09-13
I'm not normally a picture book person, but I liked this one quite a lot. Care has been taken in writing the captions and section introductions, which does not always happen in picture books--this is a scholarly book as well as a fan book. The only negative about the book is that it is not the definitive book of photos of Elvis--there are (I presume for copyright reasons) none of the famous photos of Elvis on Milton Berle or Steve Allen. There are also no truly unflattering photos of the later Elvis, but I assume those buying the book would, like me, not want such photos anyway. On the other hand, there are many pictures I hadn't seen before, and all the pictures, familiar or not, are well-presented. A good buy.

A Must-Read for ALL Business People.......2006-12-26
If you're in business or marketing, you need to read ALL of Dan Kennedy's books.
Don't waste your money.......2005-07-22
I found this book to be horrible. After having it for one day I sent it back to amazon. It is not even worth $10. He spends to much time talking about himself and examples that don't really mean alot. Please don't bother with this book.
I thought my results were good before Dan, but now WOW.......2005-03-18
I thought I was good at helping my clients increase sales and marketing before I ran across Dan's books. I'm a business coach with results that over 80% of my clients were doubling their business in 3-4 weeks BEFORE I ran into Dan and his materials, but now I've actually been able to increase my own marketing response, and that of my clients by 4-5 times, not just double.
I coach clients on marketing and sales techniques, yet Dan blows me away. Although I was already way above the national average for marketing response and sales, once I started reading and working with Dan and his materials my own figures really went through the roof.
Now I read everything that Dan writes and constantly get better and better results for my own sales and marketing, and for my clients.
What you learn in this book can be applied to more than sales letters. I use the principles for all areas of sales (networking, marketing, cold calling, etc). I've also taken his ideas for a long sales letter and applied them to shorter marketing media such as post cards. My post card response rate went up 4-5 times!! Fantastic.
Dan is probably one of the easiest marketing and sales experts to follow and learn from, and his ideas deliver results.
Don't Be A Loser!.......2005-02-06
This book had such an impact on me that I signed up for his $39/month newsletter just to gain more of his wisdom. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you don't need this book. You do! It applies to ANY business and EVERY business. I run an Internet-based publishing company and use the strategies in this book, everyday.
The results?
I have doubled my NET profits in three months!
I will trade less that $15 for that kind of money all day and everyday...
Dan Kennedy = Marketing Genius.......2004-08-27
Dan always tells it like it is in a no-nonsense fashion. The book is full of hard-nosed, pull-no-punches solid advice from the trenches. I highly recommend it. In fact, Dan Kennedy has really helped my business. Actually, I recommend anything that Dan Kennedy creates, writes, and sells.
Applying what I learned from his courses allowed me to grow my "kitchen table" business into a nice six-figure a year income.
I like Dan Kennedy so much that I acquired a license to sell his "Magnetic Marketing" toolkit. It is highly recommended.
