5 out of 5 stars Excellent art book for all Christians.......2001-01-11

This is a thick soft cover art book that accompanies Biblical passages with art objects - paintings, sculptures from all cultures, Italian Renaissance to Modern Chinese water-colour that attempts to IMAGE the WORD - the gospel, and puts the love of Jesus in Christianity into a non-preachy, very emotionally and aesthetically moving document that appeals to the modern, intellectual, sophisticated, sensitive, cultured but atheist reader. It makes the Bible come alive in a fantasy of visual ecstasy. A marvellous gift for those who are hurting from a lack of understanding God's love. A spiritually soothing gift in a coffee-table book format.

One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).

This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.

An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are photos by Paul Chesley, David Austen and Dennis Oda;excerpts from Robert A. Raines and Jospeh Wood Krutch; poetry by Dom Helder Camara and Thomas John Carlisle; and a detail from art by Naul Ojeda.

Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Unusual Sweaters.......2001-01-30

Very nice book, with sweaters that are worked in heavier or lighter yarns, according to season. Some of them are relatively easy, and a couple are quite challenging.

She has drawn out her charts, rather than used the usual typewritten symbols, which lends extra charm to the book. Also, she has squares of color so you can more easily match yarns, if you can't find her line of yarns.

I hope this book comes out in paper--it is a shame that it is out of print.

Star Wars: Honor and Duty focuses on a relatively ordinary citizen, Senate Guard Sagoro Autem, caught up in the pre-Clone Wars political intrigue. Following a senator's murder, he's assigned to protect the replacement leading up to a crucial vote that may induce a number of planets to separate from the Republic. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and a couple of Jedi Knights named Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are key characters, but the main thrust is Autem and the effect the Republic's problems have on his family. Following that arc is a single-issue story following the Clone Wars that finds Autem now in the Imperial Fleet and getting his introduction to Darth Vader. Reprinting Star Wars: Republic 46-48 (written by John Ostrander with pencils by C.P. Smith) and 78 (written by Ostrander with more photorealistic art by Luke Ross). --David Horiuchi

Book Description

Watch the fall of the Republic through the eyes of Sagoro Autem - Senate Guard, mercenary, prisoner, Clone Wars hero and Imperial target - in a story that spans from before the Clone Wars to the first mission of Darth Vader! Young Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker his even younger Padawan, protect a senator from a small system as assassination attempts threaten to silence his crucial swing vote. Joining the Jedi in their mission is Autem, loyal Senate Guard. Yet, as Obi-Wan and Anakin fend off a league of master assassins, Autem discovers a link between the killers that will change his own life forever - a secret he will not be able to face until the Clone Wars have come and gone, and he finds himself on the run from the new Emperor's enforcer, Darth Vader!

5 out of 5 stars A well written drama of one family riven by competing loyalties .......2006-05-16

Set in the days preceding Geonosis, Honor and Duty is a both a political whodunit and a human drama, the story of the disintegration of the government mirrored in the unraveling of one family sworn to protect the Republic. Sagoro Autem is a 4th generation Senate Guard, the men with blue capes and helmets you may have noticed in the background in the prequel films. While investigating the murder of a Senator killed just prior to a vote on legislation that could cause several worlds to leave the Republic, Sogoro discovers some painful truths about his family and the system to which he has pledged his life.

It's a story told in every civil war, the story of a family set against itself, two brothers divided by competing loyalties and brought into direct conflict by the implacable forces of war. Fortunately, John Ostrander is on hand to tell the tale. He is without question the most talented writer to work long-term on any Star Wars comic, and this particular volume shows why. He does as good a job as possible with the politics in a series in which not many authors get into the details about exactly what kinds of corruption cause so many to believe the only recourse is secession. Where Ostrander excels is in building his characters, creating people the reader cares about. The final scene of the initial 3-part story ends with the shedding of a tear, and while I wasn't in need of a tissue when I closed the book, there was the making in my throat of a tiny lump.

The fourth and last installment of the story takes place several years later when Sagoro Autem reappears as a captain in the Republic Navy, now at the service of Sidious and Vader following events in Revenge of the Jedi. Whereas the previous story arc was about things falling apart, this one is about paying old debts and putting things back together.

You don't need to have read all of Dark Horse's Star Wars series to enjoy this book, (although you might be interested to know Autem makes appearances in Clone Wars Volumes 2 and 8). Honor and Duty stands well on its own and is perhaps unique in the Star Wars Extended Universe in presenting a story about an average citizen of Coruscant, rather than smugglers, bounty hunters, clones, or super-powered Jedi and Sith.

The art on this series is handled by C.P. Smith in the first 3-part arc, published in Star Wars Republic #'s 46-48 (Sept, Nov, Dec 2002). His style here has a European feel, open and airy, featuring heavy dark outer lines and lots of open interior space - not much hatching within the characters and minimal background detail in most frames. This is exploited well by colorist Joe Wayne to produce a color-saturated look. It appears Smith was perhaps rushed at the end of the series, but overall he does a fine job conveying the action. Luke Ross brings a different style to the final chapter, published in Star Wars Republic # 78 (Sept 2005), in what appears to be painting more than illustration, much darker in tone, more static and less kinetic than Smith.

Overall, this is a fine example of Dark Horse's Star Wars publishing, a welcome addition to the EU, and one that I am happy to recommend.

My son was diagnosed in 1989 at the age of 8 years old with three brain tumors. We were told her would die in surgery and if he did live he would be a vegetable. The doctor was wonderful and he lives and is doing wonderfully! I have been involved deeply with brain tumor suppport now for 11 years. I talk to families at least once a week. This book gives great insight into how the kids feel about their disease and the experience that goes with it. The most important part of this book is the section that the fathter's discuss their feelings. Dads have a very difficult time knowing how to help and "fix" it as they think they must! This chapter is priceless. Good Book, Good Information, Important learning here!

5 out of 5 stars Only Erma Bombeck Could Make It Work.......2001-04-14

Erma Bombeck became renowned by highlighting the amusing aspects of the terrene. She did not usually make what are typically called "jokes"-just offbeat observations. Her columns more often initiated a satisfying smile than a hearty belly laugh. But even on the occasions that she was painfully funny she showed respect for her subjects and her audience. It was the proud acknowledgement that she was one of us that allowed us to chuckle at family life, grocery shopping, housework, and all the other quotidian errands that compose the bulk of our lives. Regardless of the subject she found some aspect that was good for a "laugh with" not a "laugh at."

How about the subject of children battling cancer? The thought of jocularly treating such a topic sounds comparable to the depraved entertainment regurgitated by the likes of Howard Stern. Surely, Erma Bombeck-the avatar of wholesomeness-would never approach such a subject. No, but it approached her. She was asked to write this book, and at first the thought of it repulsed her. Momentarily dropping her guard, she allowed herself to be talked in to attempting this work. We should all be thankful that she caved. The result is a reverent; inspiring read that has had a propitiatory impact on many, many children and adults battling cancer---not to mention legions of us who are blessed with good health.

Treading with great veneration for her subject, she produced a book overflowing with warmth, encouragement, and-as unbelievable as it may seem-tasteful mirth. It stands a proud addition to her rich legacy.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-06-27

Having grown up in an era when "the 'C' word" meant a death sentence, I was taken aback when a friend of mine suggested this little-known work of Erma Bombeck's. Why would a humerous writer tackle such a depressing subject? Kids with cancer? The book was not depressing at all. Sure I cried, but they were tears of joy. I laughed at the antics of some of the kids. I praised the professionals who dedicate their time and money to these kids. Cancer is no longer necessarily a terminal disease. People beat it all the time. I was unaware of this until I read this book, and no one could do it like Erma. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but it is especially uplifting to someone who has a friend or family member with cancer.

5 out of 5 stars I Laughed, I Cried, and then I Laughed Some More.......2000-02-06

This book is a wonderfully humorous and insightful look into children's experiences with caner. Although it certainly is not a humorous subject, the book really shows the powerful spirit of children and demonstrates the importance of humor in illness. And no matter what they go through, kids are still kids. I read this for the first time in college, and now I am a pediatrician.

5 out of 5 stars It will touch your heart and lift your spirits.......1999-10-12

This book is by far my favorite of all Erma Bombeck's books. I suspect this book is not as popular as her other writings because it's about kids with cancer, but Bombeck does an amazing job of taking such a heavy subject and finding the bright side of it all.

4 out of 5 stars Dr Bryce's Book of Brilliance!.......2006-06-21

Ever since the wonderful `surprise' ending of DR TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS I have been a fan and advocate of the anthology films of Amicus. As a film student I find that a huge swathe of British cinema is largely ignored by academia and Amicus' output falls into this category. Although this is slowly being rectified and British horror is enjoying a reappraisal, there is an overriding feeling that if anything does not purport to a stiff definition of realism or naturalism then it will be overlooked. The films of Michael Powell suffered a similar fate, until the Hollywood directors of the 60's and 70's embraced his talents.

Amicus also made a number of films away from the anthology format and for me these are significantly less satisfactory, with the possible exception of THE SKULL and the intriguing and bizarre SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN. This valuable, but slim book is edited by Allan Bryce, the man behind THE DARK SIDE, a bi-monthly horror magazine that has been running for 16 years. Bryce is very much on form with the dry wit and humour we know him for and the result is a pleasurable and undemanding read. The emphasis is on facts and production details and in this regard the book succeeds. However at times it does get rather bogged down in peripheral information and name dropping. The reviews are typically opinionated, and although I disagreed with a great deal of things within the book, for example the assertion that FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE is the best of the anthologies. This is a hard thing to justify as the majority of Amicus' anthologies were a mixed bag of good and bad. At times the reviews are overly negative and one wonders why time was bothered writing the book if the films are so inept. This aside, there is still a general enthusiasm and love for not necessarily the films, but the genre itself and this is good enough for me. Where the book really excels is in its visual presentation, full of wonderful stills and posters, many in colour, this is a beautifully presented if over-priced book. This is an essential book, simply because it remains one of the only books on Amicus in existence.

3 out of 5 stars The leader in a field of one........2005-09-07

A lot of horror fans are starting to regard the 70s as something of a golden age for the genre. In the US the spawn of 'Night of the Living Dead' in the form of bleak shockers like 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' were starting to roam the drive-ins. In the UK, while Hammer's classics were largely behind them, fresh competition was emerging in the form of new independents like Amicus. Amicus were best known for their anthology films, and their 'From Beyond the Grave's a personal fave.

'Amicus: The Studio That Dripped Blood' is a treat in many ways. It's a competently designed, visual feast, which covers the studio's output in some detail. But like Amicus itself, the book is very much a mixed bag. British monster mag stalwart Allan Bryce is credited as editor, though who actually wrote it isn't clear. Bryce's style - 70s horror hackery - is all over some of it at least. 'Funny' picture captions, and a tendency to overuse the '!' key and finish synopses with... for example. The whole thing needed a good edit. There's far too much extraneous facts (do we really need to know exact takings for the initial runs on old classics? Or what a screenwriter's father did for a living?) and not enough insight or wit. Is a full page box-out on Joan Collins justified? Coverage of the studio's non-genre productions is probably redundant, as are full plot synopses including spoilers in our post-VCR age. I also find film journalists waxing lyrical on the sexual attractiveness of various starlets a little seedy, though that's perhaps just personal taste.

The book feels very much like a lavish extended genre 'zine, with all of the limitations and advantages that implies. It's obviously derived from a genuine love of the genre, but the writing lacks the verve to make it fully contagious. Knocked into shape it could - like the best of Amicus's output - have become a cult classic. As it stands, it's a slightly stilted love letter to an unjustly neglected horror studio. Next to solid books on similar subjects like Harvey Fenton's 'Ten Years of Terror' or Jonathon Rigby's 'English Gothic', 'The Studio that Dripped Blood' feels rather thin.

Had a hardcover edition of the rules for this way back when, detailing the rules of battle for encounters between scary aliens, and far scary religious nut space marines, with all sorts of nasty weaponry.

(My first language is Spanish, so excuse any misspells) I have been working on delivery management, and now development, of online courses ind Guatemala since 1999, for a private university, international training organizations and government. Among all my research to learn about the topic and improve my work, this piece of literature is among the very best. It bases its conclussions on research results, it places the human being (who is the target of e-learning programs) in the center of the process and, based on that, and other aspects, it provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't, concerning teaching methodologies for online teaching and/or training programs. Though, it does not concentrate or cover management systems for e-learning program delivery, another very important issue for successful distance programs. The book is great, simple and clear. Bright!!

Ruth Colvin Clark continues to put out valuable resouces for those interested in multimedia education. This would be a valuable addition to any library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers.......2006-08-01

With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.

There are some newer technologies such as Wikis and Blogs that are not covered in the book, but since the authors focus on proven techniques with studies to back them up it's unlikely such technologies would receive a lot of coverage at this point.

If you're responsible for designing or reviewing courseware this is a very good nuts-and-bolts reference.

e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site. It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do. This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for practitioners.......2005-05-16

I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing. I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read. Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have.
