Pioneering conceptual artist Vito Acconci began his career as a poet. In the 1960s, before beginning his work in performance and video art, Acconci studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop and published poems in journals and chapbooks. Almost all of this work remains unknown; much of it appeared in the self-produced magazines of the Lower East Side's mimeo revolution, and many other pieces were never published. Language to Cover a Page collects these writings for the first time and not only shows Acconci to be an important experimental writer of the period, but demonstrates the continuity of his early writing with his later work in film, video, and performance.
Language to Cover a Page documents a key moment in the unprecedented intersection of artists and poets in the late 1960s--as seen in the Dwan Gallery's series of "Language" shows (1967-1970) and in Acconci's own journal 0 to 9. Indeed, as Acconci moved from the poetry scene to the art world, his poetry became increasingly performative while his artwork was often structured and motivated by linguistic play.
Acconci's early writing recalls the work of Samuel Beckett, the deadpan voice of the nouveau roman, and the jump cuts and fraught permutations of the nouvelle vague. Poems in Language to Cover a Page explore the materiality of language ("language as matter and not ideas," as Robert Smithson put it), the physical space of the page, and the physicality of source texts (phonebooks, thesauruses, dictionaries). Other poems take the space of the page as an analogue to performance space or implicate the poem in a network of activity (as in his "Dial-a-Poem" pieces). Readers will find Acconci's inventive and accomplished poetry as edgy and provocative as anything published today.

the perfect beach read.......2007-09-23
this easy to read autobiography is one that i could not put down once i started. i first became acquainted with katie price/jordan on the E network and was hooked at once. her willingness to let cameras in her private sanctum is only matched by the brutal honesty in this book. she pulls no punches and illustrates the possibility of evolving from a scarred damaged young girl into a successful self empowered woman in control of her life and loving it. she highlights all the people, like family, that have aided her in her quest to become a superpower. her willingness to fall in love despite her trials also proves to be very beautiful, only matched by her devotion to her son.
this is a fun book and if you ever have the chance to see her on television you will soon realize that it is her voice in this book, loud and clear.enjoy
Surprising GOOD..........2007-09-19
Being an American I first heard of Jordan/Katie Price on an "E" TV channel reality show. Normally I can't stand reality TV but for whatever reason, I tuned in. I was very intrigued by both Katie and her now husband Peter from the get-go. I decided to buy her first autobiography because I was curious. I must be honest...I wasn't expecting much. I knew she had a ghost writer but I figured it would be Katie/Jordan talking about how awesome she was and how beautiful and that everyone else was crap. I was pleasantly surprised. She seems very down to earth and genuinely a good person. Sure, she has the trappings of fame that many celebrities have but she seems to have gotten a really bad rap from the public and press. I haven't heard most of the stories that she talks about or anything new that has happened to Katie because I don't frequent England but I think that she was able to express what has happened to her in her life in a very realistic and entertaining way. I don't know of many of the people she talks about because they are primarily British but it was still a fun read. I highly recommend this book to anyone and I am looking forward to her next autobiography that I just received.

Great read! She really lets us in her life and tells all. She didn't hide anything or how she felt and she wrote how she speaks, which makes you feel like she is talking directly to you. The book is very interesting and lets you know who she really is. Katie Price is genius!

I am a huge fan of Katie Price not so much Jordan. I like the human side and her story of personal turmoil - can be any one of us in our younger years. The men she ended up with (with exception to Pete Andre) are all jerks who just used her but she got through it and now has a sucessful relationship! Good on her!

It's hard to find a book that is as funny, interesting, educational and deeply humane as this graphic novel. The story is charming but not saccharine. Main characters-- all of them honeybees-- die, some quite heroically and others simply grow old. And while the bees are to a great extent anthropomorphic they remain bees and their world is filled with alien and fascinating information.
All in all this was a wonderful book.

Let me just start by saying the author, Jay Hosler, is one of the best human beings you could ever have the fortune to meet. I am one of his students at Juniata College, and I can tell you everything this man does is quality and excellent. Dr. Hosler's first book, Clan Apis, is my personal favorite because I think it best illustrates him as a person.
Dr. Hosler loves inverts, and mostly, bees. So, it is obvious that this graphic novel is a labor of love for him. Every page and every character is scripted and illustrated in the utmost care and love. His gift for narrating an amazing tale and combining that with clever education is not just obvious in this book, but in the classroom. Everything he has ever taught me has stayed with me to some capacity because of his ability to clearly communicate ideas.
Not only is Clan Apis a wonderful story about bee biology, but it is even a tasteful way to introduce young readers into many adult topics such as leaving home, independence, and death. Dr. Hosler executes every bit of this story with style, humor, and decorum. He has created a story that not only entertains but educates on many levels, an achievment most major movie studios have not accomplished in animation in years (You listening Disney? Pick up this for a screenplay!).
If this hasn't convinced you to buy this amazing, quirky book, then do it for the fact he has two really cute kids and has to put up with a room full of annoying biology geeks like me everyday.

My kids rolled their eyes at first, but once I started reading it to them, they were hooked. Clever art, fun word play, and bad puns all make it a great story.
Oh yeah. And it's educational. Not just educational like most educational childrens books: this one is written by scientists who studies bees, and loves his subjects. (and it shows).
Our only complaint is that we have to keep reordering, because we keep giving our copies away as birthday presents to friends!

I have got to come up with a better sell on this book than........it's a graphic novel........about bees.
You follow our heroine through her amazing development as an organism, and as a person. (ahem, sorry..a bee) The plot twists, turns, does loop-de-loops. The characters mature and show a surprising depth of emotion. Each bee is unique in appearance and deed, without being "cartoony"....they could be illustrations in a textbook as far as authenticity goes....and yet they show emotions.
There are points where you'll laugh, and points where you'll cry, and at times you'll want to cheer out loud. (I did)
What an amazing book. You are totally entertained, and yes you also learn something...but for me that was a distant second.

The first duty of a graphic novel, obviously, is to entertain. Hosler, who has a Ph.D. and specializes in neuroscience and bees, not tells a really good story about life and personalities in the hive, and is a very talented artist besides, he also manages to cram in a great deal of educational information. Icing on the cake. He starts with the birth and transformation from larva to pupa to adult of Nyuki (Japanese for "bee"), a worker who often annoys her colleague, even her older sister, Dvorah (Hebrew for "bee," etc.). She gets lost, is almost eaten, befriends a flower named Bloomington and a dung beetle named Sisyphus, finally gets her act together (though she has to be coaxed to leave the hive again for the dangers of the outside world), and goes on to better things -- as well as a rather poetic end. The anthropomorphization is actually pretty minor, all things considered. And there's an interesting postscript about what happened when the author turned out to be allergic to bee stings. I don't know if Hosler has another insect adventure in him, but I'll be on the look-out.

Every bar, tavern, club and hall with a pool table (in the US) should have a copy of this on-hand. The horrendous inconsistence and outright ridiculousness of most local and house "rules", not to mention individual "rules", has made a sorry mess of recreational American pocket billiards. I can only hope that the REAL games of 8-ball, 9-ball, etc., become better known to amateur players over time, and that the bogus, corrupt, yokel variants of these games finally die off some day.

What's the point in selling an outdated copy? I'm looking for the latest version 2000 or 2001. So many rules have changed since 1998 that the copy your selling is almost useless to those of us that are billiard buffs and take the game seriously.

This is a book that I reccomend to all of my franchise stores that I support. This is a glossary or handbook of great service and marketing. There is no reinventing the wheel in this little book but a refernce of the tried and true. Each example is supported with results and successes. The multiple companies referred to are known companies who lead their markets in service.
I encourage my stores to take a highlighter to this book of concepts and write notes in the margins. They will refer to this book often. This is 165 pages of good information.

I read this book in one day while I was on vacation. I was so inspired, I couldn't wait to get back to work to begin a new customer service policy in our salon. We already do some of the rituals for our guests, but this book gave me so many more ideas. John Dijullius is so right about creating systems and sticking with them, day in and day out. Can't wait for the second book!!!!

Even though I am in the same industry as the author, this book is full of great ideas any business could use to implement systems to improve their customer service. We have used many of the ideas with great results. Mr. DiJulius gives you these wonderful ideas and how to implement them. If you read his book you'll see why his company is so successful. I require my staff to read this book when they are hired. This is one of my favorite business books!
