An Exhaustive treatment on artmetal techniques.......2004-06-13
I took a chance on what the first two reviewers on this site said about this book and bought it unseen. Thanks to Oppi Untracht and those two people I have purchased a book without parallel. Their descriptions are both honest and accurate. In fact the title and sub-title of this book is both accurate and understated.
This is the most exhaustive photographic treatment of artmetal on the market. As an example we see a detailed treatment on inlaying in which a craftsman from India first casts and then inlays silver into a piece of Bidri work.(Bidri work is the inlaying of pure silver, in wire and sheet form, into cast objects of a non ferrous zinc alloy) Thirty Four photos show the process from casting a dish to finally polishing the finished product with the silver inlaid into the surface. There are other books on the market that talk about inlaying like "Metalwork and Enamelling" by Herbert Maryon (another excellent book) but they only talk us through the process whereas here we get to see it being done in photographic form. I will only list that one example but all the processes and subjects are explained equally well whether it be discussing Soldering, Casting Waxes or Raising metal, or even explaining the subject of Polishing Compounds.
The section at the back of the book on Material and Tool supply houses will be of much use to those living in North America. No doubt since its publication some of these will have closed but at lest it gives you a point of reference to start from and I only wished that we had them way down here at the bottom of the world.
The book also includes a good Glossary and there is also included a Bibliography which will be of use to those wanting to look up some of the older titles.
I will finish there as I am giddy with delight and am about to really start rambling on and believe that you will be too if you buy this outstanding book.
5+ Stars
This is a very thorough encyclopeadia of metalworking.......1998-12-26
I have always regarded this as the ultimate reference book for metaworkers. It covers many different facets of metalworking in a very clear way with lots of good photographs. How can this important book be out of print?
Well written encyclopedic introduction to art metal work.......1998-03-12
This book, printed in 1968 and reprinted in 1975 is a classic text with over 440 well written pages on metalworking processes and another 60 pages of detailed tables, charts, indexes et cetera. It provides a mini-course in the history, philosophy, anthropology and technology of art metal working.
The book is well illustrated in black and white, demonstrating a logical progression of techniques from ancient to mid 20th century. There is little except sketchy mention of industrial processes such as electroforming, heavy casting and spinning and none at all of recent gimmicks such as sonic carving.
In the paranoid and safety conscious social climate of the late 1990's the most notable deficit in this book is the general absense of discussion about health and safety hazard issues. (I suppose that when the book was written authors still presumed their readers had either common walking-around sense to know that fire is hot, dusts and fumes toxic and hammers would mash their itty bitty fingers or if in doubt would go look up safe shop practices in other books written on that subject.)
Book Description
Halloween was once considered an adult practice referred to as "going a-souling," but it was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money. The tradition of trick-or-treating can be traced back to the early 1900s, but the decorations of all things scary began much before that. Some time around the late 1800s pumpkins, witches, black cats, and ghouls began appearing in parades, adorning city streets, and decorating homes.
Mark Ledenbach shares his collection of vintage Halloween collectibles for the first time in this new identification and price guide. Nearly 1,250 vintage collectibles are vividly displayed in full-color, with the majority of them having never before been published in previous works profiling Halloween memorabilia. Each masterfully photographed item includes manufacturing country, company, and dates; specific measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch; and reproduction alerts, item iterations, and more.
* Nearly 1,250 collectibles displayed in full-color * Features captions with manufacturing data for each item displayed * Includes different marks and packaging used by companies, such as Beistle, Dennison, Chein, US Metal Toy, T. Cohn, and Kirchhof

Top Vintage Halloween Guide.......2006-08-26
When I started discovering vintage Halloween items, I came upon Mark Ledenbach's book. It became my leading guide while investigating on eBay. On his web site I could contact him an ask for advice. He was very friendly and helpful. The photos and lay out of his book are fantastic and it is better organized then other books I own. I could not have enjoyed the beautiful graphics and usual, rare items if it were not for this book. You must purchase this whether you are a serious collector or not. Have fun!
The Best Halloween Collectibles Guide.......2005-07-17
Price guides frequently suffer from poor photography. This book breaks the mold showing clear color photographs of amazing piece's in Mark's Collection. Halloween ephemera continues to be a popular collectible and this book should be part every collectors library.
Fabulous reference for the seller!.......2004-11-16
What a wonderful book! I sell on ebay and found the book to be highly informative and the prices pretty accurate for most of the items I have come across. A must have resource for anyone who buys, sells, or collects vintage Halloween!
Extremely well researched book- beautiful!.......2003-08-13
As a collector of Vintage Halloween, this is the most comprehensive and well researched book on the topic to date that I have found. The layout is spectacular and well thought out. Photographs and descriptions are superb. The "tab" index that identifies the chapters makes it easy to find a particular item and the rarity rating is a wonderful addition for serious collectors. Almost all of the items pictured are in first-rate condition, well-described and logically grouped. If you are going to buy one book on Vintage Halloween, this is the best!
A Guide for the Rare and Unusual in Halloween Collectibles.......2003-07-20
I am impressed with this book. The research and documentation is so thoroughly done that I feel I can use this as the definitive guide for my Halloween collection. I like also that there are things in this book that I haven't seen anywhere else. This is a great catalogue of an extensive collection, and is a must for anyone who collects antique Halloween. Well done!

A book for those who need one!.......2006-01-19
This book os full of hilarious parodies of T.V. shows from present day an from a LONG time ago- like when I was a kid. This book has an introduction by Weird Al' Yankovic, and tons of comics! They have parodies of:
Everybody Loves Raymond
Friends
Seinfeld
Star Trek
Batman
Jeopardy
And more!
This book is mostly black and white, however in the middle of the book, there is about 16 pages of color, a nice change from the regular black and white!
Great.......2001-08-01
Who else could send us to our graves laughing in delight other than Mad? Answer : Nobody. The boys are ate it again, with these classic spoofs of all our favorite sitcoms, soap operas and cartoons. My personal favoirtes are : When Seasame street joins the vast political right wing and the spoof on Kung-Fu (Kung Fool). You really can't go wrong with mad, aside from Calvin and Hobbes's creator and writer Bill Watterson, these guys are the only ones who can make me laugh out loud while reading the gags. If your new to MAD then this is the perfect place to start, even though I'm too young to have seen all the shows that are in this book I still get a kick out of reading them and you will too. I reccomend getting this one first, before checking out the other books MAD has to offer. This is the perfect gift for anyone at anytime, so cheer them up and make 'em laugh to death!
A very good book by MAD, not great though........2001-07-06
This is a very good book! Worth buying, yes I believe so. This is much better than tha MAD About the Movies because it has more flavor and has better comics about the TV world in MAD's perspective. I really like this book, but it doesn't compare to some of the five star work MAD has done with such books as MAD's Bathroom Companion and MAD's Half-Wit & Wisdom of Alfred E. Neumann. If you like TV and Movie spoofs, and you can relate to a lot of them, than this is one to buy! If you are just looking for a laugh, this would be a good book to have, but not before some of the others!
I am mad about mad tv!!.......2001-05-26
This book is incredibly funny with parodies of tv shows that you enjoy. From the original Batman series to X-Files this book has it all!!
Superb!.......2000-01-11
A great synopsis of the past 30 years of TV history as seen through the warped minds of MAD. I owned some of these issues in the 70's but it was nice to see that some of the gang hadn't lost their touch into the eighties and nineties. If you like this you'll love MAD about the seventies. They both bring back fond and funny memories.

The fact that this book exists makes me happy to be alive........2007-01-03
Perfect for any trivia fan, whether they've ever seen Mad About You or not (if they haven't, the answers are in the back, they can memorize them and then impress their friends with their staggering Mad About You knowledge). With six hundred and one questions, that gives you, at the rate of one a day, six hundred and one days worth of daily questions to quiz your friends, coworkers, children, spouse, lover, servants, or cab driver with. You'll be the talk of the town with your copy of "What's Your Mad About You IQ?"
This is a Great Book!.......2004-09-05
I loved this book! I loved how the author focused on details that the average fan might miss, like what Jamie's middle name is or what Paul yelled at Lisa. (Note - this is a question in the book and the answer is "Chicken a La King) I will warn fans that this book focuses on miniscule details instead of the main ones. You answer questions and see what your I.Q is. The awards range from the "Murray Good Boy" award to the "Jamie Buchman award"
Good luck to all who buy this book
What's Your Mad About You IQ?.......2002-04-25
Great book for any Mad About You fan.
Fun!.......2001-06-01
This book is a lot of fun. Especially if you love trivia and/or if you are MAD about Mad About You. I am a big fan of this show and I thought I knew a lot about the characters... when I read this book I found out I did not know as much as I thought. The questions in this book are very detail oriented and to get them correct you really do need to know a lot about the show! I now know a lot more than I did previously! This is surely a book for Mad About You lovers and probably would be borrowing for most anyone else. Personally, I found the book completely entertaining and a lot of fun! I am thrilled with my purchase.
Great book!!.......1999-01-27
This book is really only for people who love Mad About You. But if you do love it, then it's awesome! I also have the Jamie Buchman Award! And also, in the book summary it says their last name is "Buckman", but it's "Buchman".
Book Description
We live in duplicitious times, and nothing is more duplicitous than the rhetoric of the Republican Party. Simply put, what Republicans say is not what they mean, and you need a dictionary to comprehend what they mean. Thus was created The Real Republican Dictionary, a work that offers understanding and clarity of "Republican English."
Featuring almost two hundred definitions, numerous illustrations, as well as a revised Bill of Rights, altered to more accurately reflect the current political climate, it is our hope that this dictionary will establish an alternate reality to Republican rhetoric, a reality that those in the reality-based community like to call "the truth."
Some examples:
Activist Judges--Judges who refuse to adhere to a strict interpretation of the Ten Commandments.
Axis of Evil--Liberals, Homosexuals and the French.
GOP--God's Only Party.
Iran--Next.
NPR--Not Pro Republican.
Peace--The short interval between wars.
"You already know right-wingers are mean. Now find out what they mean."—Ted Rall
"When I have to figure if what I mean is what I say, I consult The Real Republican Dictionary."—George W. Bush

Book Description
Chess owes its extraordinary strategic depth to pawns. These humble pieces can take on many roles in the chess struggle. They can be blockers, battering rams, self-sacrificing heroes, and can even be promoted to the ranks of royalty. On the other hand, if mishandled, they can be weak and provide targets for enemy attack. In this book, experienced grandmaster and trainer Drazen Marovic elucidates the pawn's multi-faceted nature. By investigating high-quality games from grandmaster practice, he provides the reader with an armoury of pawn-play concepts that will help him or her to make the right judgments at the board. Chapters include: Isolated Pawns, Hanging Pawns, Passed Pawns, Doubled Pawns, Backward Pawns, Pawn-Chains, and Pawn-Islands.

Heir to Soltis.......2007-09-12
Having read the classic manual Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis, I was very interested to see how this book would stack up. I learned a lot from Soltis, and I hoped to expand my understanding about how pawn structures affect plans and strategy. I was not disappointed. Marovic uses many, many complete game examples, but his annotations are so succinct and clear as to make the large number of games effortless to get through. One thing he does well which is VERY hard for most chess authors is present the model games in a sequence in which their respective lessons build upon one another to deeply reinforce the concepts he's trying (and succeeding) to instruct. The one caveat, if you want to call it that, is that I think this book will be most helpful for people with an intermediate knowledge of openings, as the pawn positions discussed tend to reoccur in specific openings with specific piece placements. However, this shouldn't be a problem as I believe the intended audience is above 1600 USCF anyway, and should thus know the difference between a QGA and a QGD.
Great book for the advanced amateur.......2006-11-23
This book uses complete games to examine pawn structures--their strengths and weaknesses. Marovic uses a conversational tone to explain important points and keeps analysis to the minimum needed to illustrate the explanation. In separate chapters he examines isolated pawns, passed pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns and pawn-chains.
Marovic uses games from throughout the history of chess to illustrate his material and does a great job. I would recommend this book for players rated (USCF) from Class B and up, although rapidly advancing lower rated players would also benefit from reading the book as well.
The only thing that could make it better would be a few more diagrams.
Pawn Structure/Planning your Backbone of the game.......2006-10-08
Often overlooked is the importance of preparing long term planning for not just the endgame, but the use of pawn chains, and even what is considered a weakness, doubled pawns being used as a "battering ram!" and opening a file. These are very important aspects of chess and what has been called the "backbone" of chess is often forgotten in light of only tactics. True, tactics books, trap books and opening books have a very important place and all should be studied. But the "use of pawns" should not just be a chapter in a book, it should be a couple volumes of books! If you are a beginner, even an lower end intermediate player you will get more results in studying tactic and chess traps. But Once you reach a solid intermediate level then you should start thinking more about the finer points of play. Now, I like the overall approach of "Understanding Pawn Play in Chess" but I think a few words (to say the least) were lost in the translation (it seems clear to me that the author's first language was not english), which is why, though I feel this is a good book, some of the important ideas were lost the the translation, and can be a little confusing. Solitis's "Pawn Structure Chess" is a good alternative. I also like going over complete game books such as, "Understanding Chess" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons and More Unbeaable Chess Lessons" as ways to gain an understanding of all aspects of the game, including the critical use of pawns.
A classic - Every serious chess player should buy this book.......2006-08-01
Traditionally chess books are often grouped in the categories: opening, middle game and ending. Marovic's book "Understanding pawn play in chess" covers a very important topic in chess, which includes all the three phases of a game. It will help you little if you know the moves in the French opening, but you don't know how to handle the pawn chain from a French opening. Means how to attack the wedge and the base of the pawn chain. "Understanding pawn play in chess" will help you to do understand what to do with pawn chain. So if you want to extend your knowledge about pawn structures this is the book for you. The topics covered in this book are: isolated pawns, isolated pawn couples, hanging pawns, passed, doubled, backward, pawn chains and pawn islands.
One Minus with this book, is that the author and Gambitbooks could have used more diagrams for each game. You must always use the board when going through this book. With more diagrams describing the most interesting position for the pawn subject, the book would become more readable.
Great book from the great author.......2004-11-02
I personnaly own half a dosen books wrote in croatian from Drazen Marović, and they are excellent. Unfortunately, he doesnt publish in Croatia any more, so this is the only way to read his fresh stuff. Games of high quality in this book are anotated in a way which can help to improve your understanding, not just about pawn play, but about overall strategic issues in midgame, and correspondance between pawns and pieces. Recomended.
Book Description
Are you striving for excellence yet find your efforts increasingly taken for granted and undervalued? You’re not alone. Many companies discover their improved performance doesn’t translate into higher perceived value. In fact, it simply shifts the customer’s expectations upward, causing the customer to take the new, improved performance for granted. High-performance companies unwittingly create unrealistic customer expectations that become impossible to meet. In this important book, the authors use a realistic story that illustrates the paradox of excellence¾the better you perform, the more invisible you become to everything but bad news¾shows the symptoms and causes, and provides clear guidance for overcoming this perplexing dilemma. The Paradox of Excellence introduces an entertaining story with characters that are easy to relate to, ideas that can be readily implemented, and a practical framework for achieving long-term success.

A New Twist In Managing Expectations.......2006-12-17
David Mosby and Michael Weissman have authored a nifty fable on how excellence, if not managed, can kill you. "The Paradox of Excellence" can be applied not only to companies but to public sector and non-profit sector organizations...and by excellent performers, regardless of their walk of life, to avoid being victimized by professional excellence.
"The Paradox of Excellence" is revealed in a story about Premiere Specialty, a mid-sized logistics company serving Silicon Valley. Premiere has been notified that is about to lose MicroZip Electronics, one of its largest customers, due to a rare shipping error after years of excellent service.
The fable centers on several key employees investigating the error, what they learn, and how they put their "learnings" to work to insure against lost orders in the future, despite excellent service.
The book ends with a concise overview of the "Paradox of Excellence" - the symptoms, the root cause, root behaviors and assumptions, and the remedy - complete with a self-assessment.
"Paradox of Excellence" is a quick and easy read. The book is profound due to the concept's simplicity, a simplicity that due to its subtlety (excellence) has been overlooked until now, and that, too, is a paradox.
Customers pay for experiences - not products!.......2006-04-03
Mosby and Weissman cut to the heart of the fact that customers don't buy products, they buy experiences. All too often companies get caught up in the rat race of satisfying customer needs and attempting to outdo the competition and overlook what customers really want - value. Of course, being in the eye of the beholder, value is like shifting sands in the desert.
Customer expectations must be identified, understood, and managed more carefully than ever before. Internally, outstanding performance often creates a tendency to rest on one's laurels; externally, customers will take features, once lavished with praise, for granted. The key is to learn what you look like through the customer's eyes.
Divided into two main sections, The Paradox of Excellence offers an excellent expose into the perils that ride on the coat-tails of success:
Be sure to check out the "The Continuous Visibility Wheel" toward the end of the book, that covers five distinct phases:
- Discover the expectations
- Define and select your distinguishing value
- Select the metrics to be made visible and the best manner in which to present that information
- Uncover the best source of data to use, and
- Deliver the information needed to keep your value in the minds of your customers and your employees.

"Business Success through Innovation"
Provokingly scary.......2006-03-10
Provides excellent analogy on how our own business strives for excellence while we forget about who and why we aspire to that level. Excellent read!
It CAN happen to you - Here's how to prevent it.......2005-11-19
This easy to read, but insightful book has put an eloquent name to a problem that plagues many businesses. The Paradox of Excellence was something that my company struggled through several years ago...if only we'd had this book, we'd have saved hours of struggle AND several clients.
Mosby and Weissman have crafted an excellent book. Similar to the books of Patrick Lencioni, the bulk of the book is delivered in an imminently readable parable. This makes it a quick and fun read. But, as most great teachers teachers know, the parable exists to demonstrate the core principles...in this case how to keep your business from becoming invisible except when you have a problem. I highly recommend this book.
Do Not Ever Be Invisible Again ! ! .......2005-10-28
Great insight into business & personal activities - you need to "toot your own horn", this tells you Where, When, How, & Why to take action so you (or your comapny) is not invisible. Remember Nolan Ryan well states it: "It ain't bragging, if you can do it".
My Husband is making it a gift to each of his APICS Certification Class students.
