Women in Italian Renaissance Art: Gender, Representation and Identity
ASIN: 0521565804 |
Book Description
This volume considers pictured and picturing women in Renaissance and Baroque Italy as the subjects, creators, patrons, and viewers of art. Women's experiences and needs (perceived by women themselves or defined by men on their behalf) are seen as important determinants in the production and consumption of visual culture. By using a variety of approaches the contributors demonstrate the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach when studying women in Italy from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries.

Book Description
Paolo Roversi is known internationally for his romantic, intense, and ethereal fashion images and portraits, photographs that quiver on the edge of their own seemingly fragile existence. A typical Roversi picture appears as if captured in the process of becoming--it develops on the page before our very eyes or, depending on perspective, it might simply vanish into the ether. Since 1980 Roversi has worked primarily with 8-by-10 inch Polaroids, and rarely on location. Studio is a milestone in his burgeoning bibliography. Designed as a series of 60 gatefolds, at first glance the book appears to be a collection of empty pages. The experience of looking is akin to that of peeling away the leaf from a Polaroid--out of the blackness an image is revealed as if by magic. In images that represent nearly two decades of work, the collection offers a self-portrait of the artist and a window into the place where he creates his art. These photographs are a mix of both the published and the highly personal, but all have the intimacy engendered by that place where Roversi feels most at home.

Amazing Book.......2006-06-12
Well worth the wait. If you can manage to get ahold of a copy then do while you can. With only 1000 copies printed it's a sure sell out.
This book is what Paolo does best and that's creating a book that turn photos into a poem.
x files.......2004-04-24
I absolutely agree with the other review for this book: I also had ordered it, I was also expecting it to be published, I also cancelled the order since nothing was happening, I'm also disappointed with the fact that I don't know if it will ever be in my hands... what does "limited availability" mean? Is there only one copy belonging to own Paolo Roversi?
What has really happened?
who knows......
Roversi's Elusive "Studio".......2004-04-04
I'd love to review this book, if it ever would get released. Roversi has been a favorite of mine for many, many years, and I've been anticipating the release of this book ever since I learned of it.
I actually had it on order for over a year, with my order first placed a couple of months shortly before the book was to be released in 4th quarter 2002. Then, with only a month or so to go until the scheduled release date, it was mysteriously pushed back--if I remember correctly--about 13 months to late 2003. When that date passed without a release, Amazon told me that they had received them, but the book had not been released, so couldn't ship them. The release date was then listed as being a couple of weeks later, December 23rd of 2003.
When that date passed without the release, Amazon told me that in fact, they did not have them, and they did not know when the book would be released. When I asked them--twice--to specifically explain why they had said the books had been received, and then later denied that they were in their warehouse, they would not. And neither would Amazon provide me a contact for the publisher so I could try and get some first-hand information from them, as dealing with Amazon was turning into a complete waste of my time.
Completely and utterly frustrated, and angry with Amazon's inability to tell a straight story or provide an avenue for me to get information from the publisher, I finally cancelled my order in March 2004, with the "projected" release date still listed at December 23rd of 2003.
Now, with the book never having been released, Amazon lists availablility as "Out of Print--Limited Availability". Good work, Amazon! Accoring to them, it's already in the cut-out stacks without even one book having gotten into consumer's hands. Looks like it will never get reviewed, huh?

Great Manga!.......2006-04-30
Great manga, but stay away from the 4kids TV show. That's a waste of time.
Shaman King Rocks!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-30
I've read this manga by downloading it on the internet. The rating is unacceptable, why is it rated 13+, it doesn't look that bad. As for my rating, 11+ for blood, swearing, and violence. Oh yeah, I am 12 years old.
yos the way to go.......2005-09-28
over all this magna is very good but with 9 swear words.it is not a good choice for a kid. but over all this magna is a great comedy and fantasy.i reccemend it to be read by 13-30 years of age but i think yo is the way to go.
This Book is the best!!!!!.......2005-08-22
I loved this book. I read it in two days. Its about this teenager named Yoh and he is a shaman (someone who sees and can talk to ghosts and spirts) and he meets someone named Mantana (something like that) and he can also see these spirts (but he's not a Shaman) and so since they both can see spirts they become freinds. And near the end of the book they meet another shaman named Ren and he is a mean shaman and thinks that spirts are tools and not freinds and so Yoh diden't like that and they fought. Also Yoh units with this 100 year old (or I think more then 100 years) samuri or spirt named Amedimaru and Ren can unit with Bason a Chinese Worlock or spirt. And so thats pretty much what this first book is about. Also after Yoh and Morty become freinds they go on a little adventure. This book is T for Teens and I agree because this book has swears in it. Just to let parents know.
...wow..........2005-07-27
This manga is incredible. I own the first 26 books in french and, quite honestly, am impressed by the sheer complexity and depth of the characters, as well as the plot. The entire thing seems incredibly realistic and believable- from the meeting in the cemetary to the bizarre X-LAWS, who's leader locks herself in a torture device.
The plot, revolving around the ancestor of Asakura Yoh, Asakura Hao, is very deep and may confuse some who don't pay attention- from reincarnation within a mother's stomach to a ghost that eats souls, this series deserves much more than a 5/5.
Book Description
In this thoroughly entertaining collection of acerbic put-downs, witty one-liners, blatantly honest appraisals of terrified contestants and even catty comments on his fellow judges, American Idol's controversial big mouth speaks on subjects as diverse as music, dance, show business, political correctness, romance, fashion, himself and his trousers. Whether he's telling a naïve hopeful that they sound like a kitten mewing, they look as if they've been dragged through a bush or are merely pleasant, safe and a little insipid, Cowell's trademark comebacks are collected here for the first time. Covering the early years with insults to his family and schoolteachers, the jibes to first bosses at work, then the sharp retorts to aspiring stars on television and his critiques of the rich and famous, this book gathers his most well-known linesand plenty of long-forgotten ones, too! With quotes from his admirers and enemies, and a section on how to speak fluent vitriol like the master, this is the ultimate handbook for getting ahead.
As Simon's older brother, author and journalist Tony Cowell has had first-hand experience of Simon's cheek, sarcasm and forked tongue. Tony worked with Simon on the biography

Book Description
Speculation abounds about the relationship between Frank Lloyd Wright and Ayn Rand. Was Wright the inspiration for Howard Roark, the architect hero of Rand's The Fountainhead? What can be made of their collaboration on the book's failed 1944 movie adaptation, and what can be gleaned from the 1949 Hollywood production of The Fountainhead? Where does the FBIWright was dubbed a communist sympathizer, and Rand was called before the House Un-American Activities Committeefit into the story?
Art, architecture, philosophy, film and politics come together in this exploration, which relies on the writings of Wright and Rand, FBI files, visual evidence and more to cement their connection. Chapters are devoted to Wright and Rand, the two together, their parts in both the failed production of The Fountainhead and the successful one, and the effect FBI harassment had on the movie and on their lives. Subsequent chapters discuss Wright's place as a Hollywood architect, and offer telling set designs and architectural images from the 1949 production of The Fountainhead. Several appendices supplement the illustrated text, and there is a filmography of movies mentioned in the book. A bibliography and index are also included.

Please don't waste your time..........2006-07-23
I read this book because I know a lot about FLW (having visited over 200 of his buildings and read many books about him) but not so much about Rand and the details of how the movie came to be. I knew the author knew next to nothing about what he was writing about from the chapter written about FLW. He omitted several key details and some of them were wrong- very sloppy work. For example (out of many), the author mentions that symmetry was one of the elements of Wright's designs. What? Not a chance. Very few of Wright's houses are symmetrical, from the inside or out. A simple detail, but an important one, especially considering that this author has a background writing about architecture.
I slogged through the book, trying to learn something, but when you know that some of the details are wrong, then which ones, if any, are right? I know nothing about Rand's background and life, and I certainly don't know if anything in the book is correct or not. From what I have previously read about FLW, I really don't buy the conclusions the author makes regarding his relationship with Rand and his role (or not) in the making of the Fountainhead movie. I am glad that I only wasted my time and not my money on this book, since I read a library copy!

more personal stuff than noted in the reviews.......2005-06-23
I did not understand most of the analysis, but that is b/c
I am at 1650. I knew that going in. But there is enough
personal "talks" in each of the games that I was happy with
the content.
Anand unleashed.......2004-04-20
This book shows some of Anands best games from the year 1986-2000. They show games against some of the best players in the world such as Kasparov, Kramnik, Shirov etc. Each game teaches a concept, wheter it be positional, tactical or an endgame. I had difficulty following the lines as he gave analysis of 2-3 pages after a move. It seemed that a better job could have been done with a verbal explanation for the average player. This book is good if you are USCF 2000 or above and do not require as much hand holding. The openings played were varied with major emphasis on the Sicilian Richter Rauzer, Najdorf, and Ruy Lopez Anands specialties. Most of the games are extremely tactical and highly interesting, but very difficult to comprehend for a club player. The analysis from each game would need to be reviwed several times to be digested. Highly recommended for the expert level player and above.
Boring!.......2003-11-12
This book has absolutely nothing to distinguish it as an instructive chess book for intermediate players. The annotations are bland and un-informative. Comparable games collections by Kasparov, Nunn, Timman, Korchnoi, Gligoric, Karpov, and countless others far exceed this work by Anand. You can get a games collection of any player downloaded off the internet, so the only reason to buy a games collecion is for their instructive oor informational value. But this 300+ page work is full of comments like, "I figured if this move was good enough for Tal, it was good enough for me." Real enlightening, huh? This is a well-produced GAMBIT publication, but for whatever reason, Anand's writing is very bland. This is an un-inspired work. It is one of the few chess books that I have returned after purchasing. Completely unnecesary. Obviously, Anand iis an all-time great player. But he is no writer or teacher.
Buy this book now!!!.......2003-05-01
Certainly one of the best chess books of our time. With his imaginative style, Anand shows the reader how magic can be worked successfully on the chess board, in a way that even the world's top grandmasters can't always counter. Advanced players will enjoy this book as well as benefit from Anand's detailed explanations. Aided by Anand's apparent need to criticize even himself and write about the better ideas even he had missed. Beginners however, will not find much use for this book, as the basic positional ideas are taken for granted and not explained, in order to emphasize the greatness of Anand's great ideas and tactical play. This books is worth every penny for its instructiveness & brilliant chess content. It's a chess book classic in the making. Grab a copy before it goes over $100!
Vishy Anand: My Best Games of Chess.......2003-01-31
Great book worth buying for serious chess players who want to know Anand's great games. Definitely recommended for rated players with 1800 ELO+. The annotations are easy to follow, but the analysis of matches against Kasparov, Kamsky are in depth. This book has great deal of references to many matches played before at some specific positions of every game giving alternatives for win, draw etc. Moreover, some interesting problems with solutions are presented at the end. Anand's opinions and positional comparisons about some openings are presented nicely. One can have a feeling of having listened to him at the end of every game.
If you are looking for Anand's biography, his life etc, then this is not the right book.
Book Description
Want to make a bad year better or turn a good year into a blockbuster? Stop leaking profits and discover the untapped gold mine that exists in your products.
The Art of Pricing is the first practical, easy-to-understand guide to solving one of the most important dilemmas in business: how to use price to uncover a product’s hidden profits and find new opportunities for growth.
When it comes to setting prices for products and services, even the most sophisticated businesspeople often rely on formulas and seat-of-the-pants instinct, based on what the competition is charging, marking up costs, and doing things as they’ve always been done. The result is that businesses of all sizes, from start-ups to the Fortune 100, leave money on the table.
In The Art of Pricing, Rafi Mohammed, one of the world’s leading experts on pricing strategy, shows:
• The astonishing impact that small changes to a pricing strategy can have on the bottom line
• How the right pricing strategy can boost profits and grow your customer base
• Why the right way to think about pricing is as a series of easy-to-implement strategies that allow companies to serve and profit from the largest possible customer base
• Why the art of pricing involves understanding and capitalizing on the fact that different customer segments are willing to pay different prices for the same product
• Why an effective pricing strategy is not about price gouging but one that incorporates fairness into every important pricing decision
The Art of Pricing will be the invaluable missing link for people running companies, departments, divisions, and product lines, as well as for those in sales and marketing. Dr. Mohammed shows that an effective pricing strategy helps complete the circle by reaping the rewards due for the enormous effort, creativity, and investment made in developing and marketing products and services. Using a range of examples, from neighborhood restaurants to huge companies like Ford, he shows the importance of not falling short—and shortchanging yourself—when it comes to the heretofore little understood art of pricing.

Pricing by value.......2007-10-04
This book was a delightful read not only because it was short and to the point, but also for it's many real-life examples. I've felt for a long time that prices need to be set to the customer's perception of the value of the product or service, so it was very encouraging to read a book where the author was able to break down the reasons and supply applications for this type of pricing he calls "Value pricing". As with an auction (a theme covered in the book) there is a price for every interested buyer, but it is not always the same for everyone. Just as only one person is willing to pay the highest "winning" bid, there are those who will pay more for any product or service than the average customer. This book helps you to identify those people.
Rich
Good Solid Advice.......2007-07-27
The suggestions about add-ons, segmenting your buyers and really trying to assess the value of your product when you price it were helpful. The problem of "goodwill" opened my eyes as I think this isn't an uncommon way that profits are bled from businesses. After reading this book, I'm really thinking more and more about getting to know my customers in terms of (1) what they want and (2) precisely how much they value my product. This is a great first step to obtaining optimal pricing. This book gets you thinking and can stir your creativity about how to better price your good/service.
Great book.......2006-05-19
I am a small business owner and get involved in pricing daily. This book provided extremely useful insight into how to make the most money from each deal. An easy read about a topic that is all too often neglected by the small business owner.
Advice that Can Instantly Increase Profits.......2006-05-16
Rafi's treatment of the subject of pricing was just what I needed to open my eyes to a whole new set of strategies for increasing profits. As a former Corporate Engineer and Manager turned entrepreneur, I needed a more thorough understanding of pricing and found exactly what I was looking for in The Art of Pricing. I appreciated the easy to read and entertaining writing style along with the many examples presented in the book. Books that make it easy for me to remember new concepts also make it easier for me to quickly apply those concepts in real world situations. I will be honing my new pricing skills for years to come. The Art of Pricing has become one of my favorite books to recommend to others.
Good Ideas for Novices!.......2006-05-16
Key to Mohammed's thinking is to set different prices for different customers having different valuations of what they are willing to pay - eg. matinee and evening prices for movies, early-bird prices at restaurants, discounts for those willing to order airline seats ahead of time.
To minimize sales staff giving away profits it is useful to show them the differential profits/product (and hopefully link their compensation to the firm's profits). Beware of sales-boosting gimmicks (eg. frequent-flyer miles) that can be "gamed" by focusing on high-volumes of low-cost purchases. One can test different strategies via eg. varying coupon offers placed within catalogs.
Other important concepts include add-ons (warranties, financing), differential pricing according to location, and taking a long-term perspective (eg. fairness during disasters and temporary product shortages).
"Cost-plus" pricing is not one of Mohammed's recommendations - however, it is increasingly utilized by successful low-cost retailers such as Costco and Wal-Mart. Setting prices using data about alternatives/substitutes is a suggested approach - however, Mohammed does not go into eg. focus-group assessments of how much specific options or new products might be worth.
