      Book Description

Ichimaru (1906-1997) combined her experience as a geisha with an extraordinary talent as a vocalist and musician to become a unique figure in the social history of twentieth-century Japan. Determined to distinguish herself, she studied music with the best teachers to be found in Tokyo's "floating world," or pleasure district. Ichimaru secured a recording contract in 1931 and never looked back as she won international renown.

In keeping with the geisha tradition of elegant dress, Ichimaru accumulated a striking collection of kimono over the course of her long career. After her death, the collection was given to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. In this colorful, well-informed, and satisfying little book, three members of the gallery's curatorial staff tell lchimaru's life story and place it in the context of the floating world and the larger world of Japanese culture. They also provide detailed information on kimono construction, materials, dyeing and stitching techniques, styles and the cultural connotations evoked by those styles, and the secret language of kimono imagery. Color photographs accompany their descriptions, and Ichimaru's life is illustrated with color and black-and-white images.

Collaboratively researched and co-authored the team of by Barry Till, Michiko Warkentyne, and Judith Patt (all of whom are from the curatorial department at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria), The Kimono Of The Geisha-Diva Ichimaru is a visually impressive photographic and informative biographical compendium of the life and success of the world renowned Japanese artist Ichimaru (1906-1997), and her collection of kimonos now owned by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The Kimono Of The Geisha-Diva Ichimaru presents story of her childhood which found her born into poverty, sold to a geisha house as a young teenager, and of her achieving fame as a singer and musician. Beautifully illustrated throughout, The Kimono Of The Geisha-Diva Ichimaru is very highly recommended to students of Japanese culture.

Detective Christian Walker, has a new parter, Deena Pilgrim. They also have a tough job, enforcing and investigating super powered crime, and in particular, homicide.

When one of the most popular heroines of all time is murdered, the investigation leads to Walker's secret past, and some of his old colleagues.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Incredible.......2007-03-01

"Who Killed Retro Girl" is a good. The story, of two "normal" detectives that are assigned to investigate the death of a superhero, is interesting and generally well told, although the plot could have had more depth. The art goes very well with the writing style and is great. I'd recommend it, and look forward to reading the other books in the series, but do hope they live up to the full potential this idea has.

5 out of 5 stars Bendis At His Best.......2006-10-01

It's kind of amazing that what I find to be Brian Michael Bendis' finest work is a book that does not take place in the Marvel Universe. While Bendis is most known for his mainstream Marvel work such as New Avengers and Ultimate Spider-Man, Powers is definitely the best Bendis work I've seen, taking the throne away from Alias, which took place in Marvel's Earth-616 world, but starred a new character.
Powers is a twist on the detective genre. Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim work in the homicide department and deal with cases involving "powers", people with superhuman abilities. In their world, powers are common, and the city is full of costumed heroes and villains. However, the general public is split on whether or not the existence of powers is a good thing. Some people love the powers while others believe that they cause more harm than good.
The series begins with Walker helping with a hostile negotiation. Upon his return to the station, he learns that he and Pilgrim are going to be partners. Their first case together is the murder of Retro Girl, one of the city's most beloved heroes. The investigation is hampered by public scrutiny, the overeagerness of a fellow cop, cryptic answers from one of Retro Girl's known enemies and known allies, and the inability to perform an autopsy due to her impenitrable skin (I loved that plot point and how the coroner dealt with it). As the case progresses, Deena learns that Christian may have more invested in the case than just the fact that solving it is his job...
Bendis' inagural arc for Powers was great, but from what I hear, things only get better from here. Michael Avon Oeming's art is very cool and an interesting alternative to what we see in most books. It is much more cartoony than other books, especially books as serious as this. The art style is an interesting juxtaposition to the gritty nature of the story.
There are also tons of extras in this collection. The one problem is that the binding causes a few word bubbles to be obscured by the spine, but it is a fairly minor problem. This is definitely a great trade that comics fans should check out.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but not great.......2006-08-10

Powers is a very interesting graphic novel, i really enjoyed the overall style, the writting and the art work, the coloring is beautiful. But i wasn't really impressed with the story, i don't know really, it isn't juicy enough may be, it isn't that deep. I felt that Bendis had run out of time or paper so he just finished off the story with a very weak arrest of the murderer! i just hope the rest of the series develops in a better form. Although it is worth the read and worth getting to know Powers.

4 out of 5 stars More interesting for background details than actual story........2006-01-13

Brian Michael Bendis, Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl? (Image, 2001)

Bendis kicks off a new series that's a new and interesting take on the superhero comic: in the Powers world, a sizable portion of the population (still a minority, but a much larger one than in most universes) have superpowers, though many of them don't seem to be able to handle them very well.

Our main characters are a pair of cops, hardboiled Christian Walker and his new partner, Deena Pilgrim, who find themselves investigating the mysterious death of Retro Girl, a superhero who actually was a superhero in this world (and that takes some doing). It's relatively short and straightforward, so the plot is simple; what Bendis is really doing here is introducing you to a whole slew of superhero and supervillain characters, some of whom are bound to pop up in later volumes. This gives the whole thing a kind of oversaturated feel that works perfectly, given the basic absurdity of the premise.

Bendis has the seeds of something good here. I'll definitely be continuing on with the series. *** ½

2 out of 5 stars Great potential but disappointing "read".......2005-12-29

This book is more of a long brochure than it is a book that you sit down and read. The concept is brillant and I will admit that I had really high expectations for it, so maybe I was destined to be disappointed from the start...

This book hardly takes any time to get through and I did laugh out loud a few different times when I was able to picture people from my gym acting like the ones mentioned in the text. My reactions and thoughts are very similar to the author's in a few instances when it comes to working out, but I did get annoyed with her constant whining and repeated observations throughout the text. This book is a slightly amusing, mindless read...IF you go to a gym. I can't imagine reading it if you don't and certainly wouldn't recommend that you pay full price for it no matter what.

      5 out of 5 stars Really Funny!.......2005-11-04

Since I've been feeling particularily fat and out of shape these days, it's no surprise I was drawn to this book. I saw it at the bookstore and picked up to flip through and it was really funny! It made me laugh out loud and since the title says exactly what my friends and I say to each other, I bought my two best friends copies. Even though I still hate the gym, the author has such a funny take on it, and great names for all of the weirdos there that I laughed when I actually did make to the gym and recognized a few of the characters. (The Mirror Man - I hate The Mirror Man!) This book was a really fun read and made me feel like I'm not the only one who has to force themselves to go to the gym.

      2 out of 5 stars 96 pages of..........2005-03-10

96 pages (and not even full pages - these are some teeny, tiny pages riddled with elementary illustrations) of sometimes-amusing gripes and tips about and for the gym. The author pisses and moans a lot, which is a given considering the title, but she seems to really be annoyed with "housewives" and "stay at home moms", as they are mentioned as a group even more than the "old folks" that she also cannot stand for various grody reasons.

The funniest comment was in the acknowledgements, where she thanks her editor/friend for "helping me see the light at the end of the tunnel," which to me makes it sound like she spent more than a full month on this spare little pamphlet.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed out loud.......2005-02-18

I never laugh out loud when I read, and this title surely made me giggle. I saw the cool cover treatment and knew it had to be a fun, cute book. I was right. Such a light topic, but something many of us have on our minds: when are we going to make it to the gym--and do we really have to go??

5 out of 5 stars Gym-haters of the world: Unite!.......2005-01-17

This is a fast, fun, funny read that gives America's torture chambers (aka "gyms"), its sadistic machinery and vicious employees what they deserve.

The author blows the lid off of the sick culture of fitness and exercise. And she puts into words exactly what the rest of us feel: That we would rathre be ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING rather than go to the gym.

Which is why, instead of going to the gym like I should, I am writing this review.

      Well done, Ms. Kamensky!

I read this book at a difficult time in my life. My mother had died days before, and I was sitting in the closest weeping, when by my foot lay a copy of Will Power! I wiped away the tears and began to read, expectantly, looking for answers.

I was inspired and enraptured to say the least, and my life suddenly took on new meaning. I could breath again, I could sing again. I began to rap involuntarily. I could not stop rapping, until musical ecstacy permeated every pour of my being. I was liberated at last from the sorrows of my recent loss.

Thank you Will Power! for changing my life forever.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Serious Music Lover.......2002-08-01

i'm not the man to make a 1000 words, but if James L. Dickerson writes them, they get you right from the start, believe you me! This is a highly entertaining look behind the scenes of american music making/industry. It also informs you quite humorous about the history of memphis politics and music. Doesn`t matter if you like jazz, blues, country, folk or rock, once you started it, you will not put it out of your hands til it's finished, at least that's how it happened to me. This was my first book of Mr. Dickerson but it will definitely not be the last. Actually i'm going to ask him if he would consider to allow me to translate it into german. To make a long story short: music lovers of the world, if you love Elvis Presley, STAX records or the blues, if you know who Chips Moman is or you want to know, order this book now cause you have to consider: it'll take them some days to get it shipped. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LIVE WITHOUT IT AND PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD ! To make one thing clear: i am not getting paid by amazon, i don't have any deals with them,i didn't even buy my copy of the book from them. Love + Peace, Axel Drücke

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Memphis Music Book.......2001-07-08

I don't write many reviews, but when I read the May 27 review on this page, I knew I would have to say something. Anyone with half a brain knows that James Dickerson is the foremost expert on Memphis music. He has written more music books on Memphis than anyone else and he has done it with more depth and authority than anyone else.

Goin Back to Memphis was nominated for the Gleason Award, and it is the only book about Memphis music that offers a complete history. The two writers the previous reviewer mentions, Gordon and Guralnick, have written some interesting books, but neither writer has ever written a history of Memphis music. Gordon's book is mostly about the people who failed to make it in music, and Guralnick's books have either been about soul music or Elvis Presley, who recorded most of his records in Nashville, not Memphis.

I recommend this book to anyone who cares about blues, soul and rock n roll music.

            1 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2001-05-28

There are many better books about Memphis, music, and the combined subject than this one. The author employs a ludicrous conspiracy theory, half-baked and never fully explained. For info on Memhpis Music, read Guralnick or Robert Gordon's It Came From Memphis. Stay away.

            Book Description

Capoeira is simultaneously a dance, a fight, and a game. Created by the Africans brought to Brazil as slaves beginning in 1500, capoeira was forbidden by law but survived underground. When open practice was allowed in the 1930s it soon became very popular. Capoeira came to America around 1975, and has become widely recognized by dancers and martial artists. The author discusses capoeira's evolution from Brazilian street play into a way of life. The philosophy of capoeira, and the practical and spiritual benefits of that philosophy, are also discussed. Instructions and exercises in intermediate and advanced skills take up where the author's previous book left off. The book includes 100 black-and-white photos and illustrations.

Nestor Capoeira's book offers readers a powerful testimony to the history of capoeira. Written in a clear and informative style, Nestor's work is accessible to all. What I most appreciate about Capoeira: Roots of the Dance, Fight, Game, is that is both an excellent foundational piece for those new to the art-form's long-standing socio-cultural traditions AND one of the best references covering the inner-workings and politically-motivated debates that have taken place in the recent past. I particularly enjoyed the anthology of recent essays and updates he includes in the last 1/3 of the book: his own reflections on new elements in the history of capoeira and Muniz Sodre's perspectives that are informed by his experiences in Candomble. Nestor's experiences--both inside roda and inside the academic realm of research--will continue to be a touchstone for the next generations grappling with the ever-shifting and expanding global contexts of capoeira. I highly recommend this book! Axe ASCAB!

            5 out of 5 stars Delve deeper..........2005-08-17

A very in-depth look into the history of capoeira that you WILL NOT learn from most mestres, especially those who only teach technique. Nestor gives a historical look at slavery's influence on capoeira, takes a contemporary look at capoeira's development, and offers illustrated basic to intermediate techniques. The most interesting thing is the examination of capoeira at a physical and metaphysical level, and how it affects the individual player as s/he progresses. A game, a fight, a dance, a way of life..? You decide.

            3 out of 5 stars A good fundemantel.......2003-02-25

This is another good *basic* book from Nestor Capoeira. It includes basic theories, history and some basic capoeira movements. Seems like this book is second part of "The little Capoeira book"

If you have just started to learn Capoeira, or if you are wondering what it is, this book would be very helpful for you.

On the other hand, if you are already a baptized capoeirista you can not find anything that you dont know, in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, written with an open-minded view on Capoeira.......2002-10-03

Again a very good book by the hands of the famous Nestor Capoeira. This book shows many aspects of our beautiful art and shows various views on certain subjects by people who really know this art (Jair Moura, Mestre Itapoan and more). The book is written with an open mind like I know Mestre Nestor. His open-minded view shows in all the conversations and lectures I had with him. This book is really a must for the dedicated Capoeirista.

5 out of 5 stars should be required reading for the serious capoeirista!.......2002-08-17

Wow - amazing book! This book explores capoeira in a very detailed historical, sociological and philosophical context. It presents sensible historical evidence for the evolution of capoeira and not just mythical hearsay. This book might be a little boring to someone with just a passing interest in capoeira, but it will be hard for a capoeira lover to put it down. Thanks, Nestor - Axé!

            Book Description

People who want to both make a living and have a life often find themselves juggling ever-increasing demands on both fronts. Debunking the myth that juggling can lead to true balance, this workbook presents four alternative strategies -- Alternating, Techno-Flexing, Outsourcing, and Bundling -- and helps readers choose the one best suited to their needs. In a style both hopeful and realistic, the authors explain each of the four strategies, detail the rewards and tradeoffs involved in each, and include case studies of people who have used these methods successfully to create a sustainable and satisfying equilibrium in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for overworked people!.......2003-05-06

If you've got too many demands and not enough time, this book will help you conquor the chaos - it's the next best thing to having Mary Poppins move in. The authors give real advice on making the most of your time. Any of their suggestions can be incorporated into your life, no matter what your income level might be.

5 out of 5 stars How to book on rebalancing your life.......2002-12-18

It's a problem almost everyone faces today, how do you balance work, home, pleasure, church, and other obligations so you are not completely overwhelmed? "Beyond Juggling: Rebalancing Your Busy Life" provides a realistic approach to getting your life under control.

The authors provide five alternatives to trying to juggle multiple commitments: Alternating, Outsourcing, Bundling, Techflexing and Simplifying. Each one of these alternatives is examined in detail with a description of what it is and is not, an aptitude test to determine if it is an appropriate option for you, and descriptions of the trade-offs for each option.

The last part of the book contains a self-assessment that helps you determine the strategy that you are currently using, the ones that best fit your personal style, what will work now with your present career and life-stage and what will be needed in your future as your needs and circumstances change.

This is simply the best book on balancing your life obligations that I have read to date. Immediately useful, highly practical, it is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking balance in life.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Read On Balance -- Hands Down.......2002-08-28

There are lots of books out there just waiting to organize your life and tell you what to do. Problem is, once you finish reading the book, it's impossible to put everything into practice. I really enjoyed Beyond Juggling because it went past that. It gave real, workable solutions to fit work and personal life. I work at a Fortune 500 company and find it difficult in the early part of my career to take the advice of most books. I can't "get off the treadmill" or work flextime until I've build up some organizational credibility. The great thing about the book was that I found solutions that worked for me. It wasn't preachy by telling me I should, of course, put family first. I know that already. Rather they listed great strategies that have really helped me to help balance everything that's important to me.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves work, and loves their life, but doesn't necessarily want the two to be one and the same!

5 out of 5 stars Wish I knew this stuff an unbalanced life ago..........2002-07-31

These authors have got it right. For over 30 years I lived in a very hectic world trying to balance family, work, hobbies, friends... In a large energy utility I was a mentor and coach to many, and now teach in a business school- and act as a consultant to industry. I continue to be in touch with a great number of folks of all ages. While the advice, and reflections of the working world I have given in the past seemed sound, and were generally consistent with many of the principles outlined in this book, those I coached, and I would be better off if I had the book then... but it is never too late- several of them will be receiving a Christmas gift early... Thank you Kurt et al.

5 out of 5 stars Tame Your Job Before It Eats You Up.......2002-07-30

Beyond Juggling was useful to me, a mother of young children, planning to reenter the workforce. I knew I didn't want the long hours and constant intensity of my previous job, but nor did I want a boring, low-stress, low-expectation job. The authors lay out the pros and cons of five strategies to keep your work and life in balance. I learned that I shouldn't work at home (what the authors call techflexing) since I need--and enjoy--the motivation of interacting with coworkers. On the other hand, my preference to concentrate on one thing at a time makes me good at alternating, a strategy of "intense work periods followed by breaks to recharge." The authors' suggestion that alternaters choose occupations that have natural peaks and valleys, such as tax accounting helped me focus my job search.
In addition to helping readers recognize and use balancing strategies that fit their personalities, Beyond Juggling shows how to incorporate other balancing strategies on a smaller scale. My need for spontaneity makes bundling, "packing multiple purposes into a single event or activity," a poor choice for me generally, but forming an investment club may be the perfect way for me to stay in touch with both my friends and my portfolio once I go back to work.
Since I love to give advice, I relished the appendix, "How Managers Can Use This Book," a whole arsenal of tools to get the best from your employees, not just the most. A wise manager may just give this book to his team members, and prevent burnout before it happens.
