Book Description
The perennial fan-favorite collection, back in print! Carnage, the spawn of Venom, has assembled an army of Spider-Man's criminally insane adversaries to spread his message of hostility, chaos and wholesale slaughter: Carrion, Demogoblin, Shriek and the Spider-Man Doppelganger! Outmanned and overpowered, the wall-crawler must recruit his own band of super-beings to combat the rising tide of evil: Black Cat, Cloak & Dagger, Firestar, Captain America, Deathlok and ... Venom?! Spider-Man's worst enemy becomes his uneasy ally in the battle to halt Carnage's mad rampage. But when he finds himself at odds with a number of his allies, who want to finish Carnage and his cronies once and for all, Spider-Man must decide whether to violate his personal code of honor to rid the world of pure evil. Can the web-slinger find an alternative before it's too late? Either choice carries dire consequences! Collects AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (Vol. 1) #378-380, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #201-203, SPIDER-MAN #35-37, SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #1 and #2, and WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #101-103.
Customer Reviews:
Chaos and Carnage.......2007-08-24
The story is chaotic, never takes itself TOO seriously, and captures the character of Spider-Man perfectly. My main gripe has to do with a few large out-of-nowhere plot devices that the writers insert toward the end of the story to help bring about the story's end. I chuckled at the absurdity of the sudden appearence of Deathlok's super-suit, and that was only one example. Still, an interestingly deep character study for a comic book, LOTS of action, and some gripping writing. Reccommended for Spidey fans of any age.
Maximum Carnage, even Spider-Man can get darker........2007-07-06
During the '90s, comics were getting to be a darker place. Grim and gritty anti heroes were the most popular thing at the time, and characters like Ghost Rider, The Punisher, and Wolverine took top billing it seems over the other characters in the Marvel Universe. This darkness even spread to the Spider-Man comics, with the popularity of Venom, who at this time fell under the anti hero category, and his spawn, the super powered symbiotic serial killer Carnage.
Marvel decided to cash in on that popularity during the summer of 1993, with a crossover that spread to all the books in the Spider-Man series. This series, dubbed Maximum Carange, is collected here in this trade paperback.
It's a beautifully re mastered trade, with some of the colors so bright and vibrant it almost seems to be 3-D. The story is a bit disjointed at times in the look, as it went through all the artists drawing the character at the time, some of the art, Mark Bagley's especially is some of the best stuff in my opinion in the history of the character, and some of the art borders on mediocre.
My only real complaint lies in that the story comes right in the middle of two other storylines, the death of Harry Osborn and the secret of Peter Parker's parents, that at this point to my knowledge have not been collected in any type of trade, so new comers to the book might be confused. And there's not even a foreword or afterword explaining what else happened with those stories. I guess if you're really interested you'd better go pick up the back issues at your local comic shop.
I'm giving it four stars, as I'm a fan of Venom and Carnage, and there's plenty of that to go around in this book. So if you're a die hard Carnage or Venom fan, I highly reccommend it.
Not as great as I remembered.......2007-03-12
One event in comics that I had fond memories of when I was a kid was Maximum Carnage. Billed by Marvel as the ultimate Spider-Man event (there was even a video game of the same name for 16-bit systems), Maximum Carnage finds Eddie Brock, AKA Venom, on the loose. However, his symbiote left an offspring behind that has bonded with serial killer Cletus Kassidey; better known as Carnage. Soon enough, a wave of terror hits New York City as Carnage and a whole group of villains (including Shriek, Doppleganger, Demogoblin, and more) go on a murderous rampage; leaving Spider-Man with no choice but to team-up with arch enemy Venom to bring an end to all the madness. There's appearances from other heroes as well, including Captain America and Cloak & Dagger among others; but this TPB has an uneven feel to it. Conceived in the early stages of Tom DeFalco's reign of terror on the Spidey books (this is the same guy responsible for the much maligned clone saga), there's various writers and artists throughout Maximum Carnage; many of which trying to keep up the storyline, but as a whole this isn't as great as I remembered it being when I was a kid. Reading it now, Maximum Carnage comes off as kind of corny, but there's enough decent artwork and action to hold your interest. Not an essential Spidey title, but worth checking out regardless.
Not as good as I remembered.......2007-02-06
Not much to say, Amazon did a good job of getting the book out to me, however it simply wasn't as good of a story as I remembered. (I used to own the original pressing of these books.) If you're a symbiote fan (venom, carnage, black suit spiderman) its a must, but otherwise it's pretty average.
An long history about Carnage mental illness.......2007-01-30
This book contains the history about Carnage's attack to New York with some helpers, it is a cliche, it is like the new generation of the sinester six, but never as cool as those group of classic villians, the art is a little disapointing, and again the history is long, boring and SSSLLOOWWW, you can chek it, but it is not an buy option.

The Book of Stupid Questions
ASIN: 0395366461 |
Customer Reviews:
Now with 50% More Science!.......2007-09-10
My copy of this book is worn, tattered and well-loved. I am even using it as a pedagogical tool in the Scientific and Technical Communication class I teach. When, oh when, will some publisher be smart enough to swoop down and republish this rare gem and its Humanities-based cousin, Culture Made Stupid?
Tom Weller turns science on its head in this timeless tome. The more you really know about science, the more you will appreciate his sometimes subtle, sometimes outrageous, humor. Although there is a version on the web, nothing beats the original.
Hysterical, wonderful parody!.......2005-10-13
I suspect that if you could somehow assemble all the photocopies ever made from individual pages in this book by businesses, labs and research houses around the country, you could reassemble the entire book. Every page is a gem. Weller's sense of the style and form of a traditional high or junior high science book is impeccable, and his sense of humor is inspired. "Science Made Stupid" is hysterical and a classic!
Out of print? Typical...........2005-01-19
All other reviewers are correct. This book is a classic and while I'm glad I didn't have to pay current used prices for it, it's worth doing so if you don't have it. Just be forewarned, it's not terribly long, so you won't be getting a giant tome.
One thing that no-one's pointed out - while its style is very similar to science books etc, the humor of this book was really driven home when a friend was doing a paper on Creationism. He found a book that this one clearly EXACTLY lampoons, from size and layout to ink color to picture style - everything. This makes the blast of Creationism all the better. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it, but the "Evolutionist vs Creationist" bit (p. 65) is completely hilarious, especially as the "Evo" side of the argument is actually one part of the book other than the copyright that is played straight.
As stupid as it gets!.......2001-10-11
It is a tragedy that this is out of print. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read. Anyone with any knowledge of science whatsoever finds it hilarious, and I show it to anyone and everyone who I think can appreciate it. No-one's ever been disappointed. Three thumbs up!
Humor that never stales.......2000-06-20
I agree with the other reviewers: HOW could this comic masterpiece have gone out of print? We have kept it in our hall bathroom for at least 5 years and it never fails to elicit laughter. I think it just gets funnier and funnier -- Weller's parody of Science is so satirically accurate, it's scary. The illustrations are hilarious as well. A fabulous antidote to gullibility about "science."

Expansive review!.......2005-10-17
I have been keeping up with AV via periodicals and product pamphlets. This was to me not a lot of new information but for folks who are just starting out, this would be a GREAT place to begin. Not too tech-y, tech-y enough when it needs to be. A decent overall offering that does what it says.
NOT for Everyone.......2005-09-16
I purchased this book as a requirement for a new job. I recently left the practice of law and went to work for a company that designs, sells and installs home theaters. Having graduated from law school, one would think I could understand just about everything. Wrong. This book touts itself as one that is for the masses - the everyday schmo who is looking to do this themselves. While extraordinarily well written, it is NOT for everyone. It is overly complex and technical for the everyday guy and is more apropos for electrical engineers or experts in the field. finally, the issue I received was supposed to be a recent edition and, if it was, it's already painfully out of date and needs revamped.
Some good stuff here - Some is total nonsense!.......2004-08-28
Robert Harley is a "high-end audiophile" and you need to keep that in mind when reading thru any of his books. In "Home Theater For Everyone", he provides a lot of useful information. But he also supplies a lot of "hokum" as well. That is, there is much in this books that he states as fact when infact it is nothing more than his own (often erroneous) opinion.
If you are already well-versed in audio/video equipment, you'll know when Mr. Harley goes "off-the-wall" with his crazy statements and conclusions. But if you're new to the world of audio/video, I say "buyer beware". If you follow all of Mr. Harley's advice, you will end up spending thousands of dollars on overpriced equipment and unnecessary frills.
Buy the book for the great general information Mr. Harley provides. But be wary of some of his conclusions and advice. One area where I strongly agree with Mr. Harley is when he advocates to do your own shopping and make your own judgements.
A mixed bag of good information and tommyrot.......2004-06-09
Much of the information in this book is good, but a couple of issues need to be addressed. Tomlinson Holman, a good engineer, is the man behind both the THX professional cinema house certification and the Home THX certification program for home theater components. I have a substantial issue with, particularly, the latter because it consists of a secret set of parameters, which are divulged only to licensees under nondisclosure. Because the requirements are themselves secret, how can anyone judge their validity, or the comparative value of the certification?
Mr. Harley, on the other hand, is no engineer at all, nor even a hands-on amateur, but a promoter. He combines occasionally astute observations with technical nonsense, so that even when his conclusions appear to make sense you have no idea how he got there. Simply put, he often either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he does and is simply writing what equipment vendors and the gullible want said.
Detailed info, much of it dated, more current books out ther.......2003-07-09
This author obviously knows what he's talking about, but the book is dated and too detailed on some topics and not enough detailed on other topics to really provide a good broad brush of the topic. There's lots on audio, but not enough on much of what is going on today, like Windows XP Media Center Edition and PVRs and DirecWAY and other things. This is a consumer electronics focus in an increasingly broader industry. I've put a lot more into my home theater than he's talked about. I'm buying Home Theater for Dummies to see what they say -- their outline is broader and their edition is just out.

Customer Reviews:
how, but not why.......2005-05-28
I am tempted to give this book a 6, since it is considered the bible of the Orff-Schulwerk approach. Sure enough, it gives complete instructions on how to set up an instrumental ensemble, how to play the instruments, and how to teach the gross motor activity. In fact, it presents some ideas which I put to immediate use in my work as a preschool English teacher in Korea.
But theory is important as well as method. Why should certain activities be taught? Why should the instruments be played a certain way? Why is the Orff approach better than the others? Why are certain musical activities and gross motor activities beneficial? If these questions were answered, I would give this book a 6.

When you buy strategy guides, don't compare........2001-12-22
When you think of a strategy guide, you think, "Gives away all the secrets and takes the challenge away from the game." Partly you are right, it does give away all the secrets, yet you are wrong too. You would say that it takes away the challenge, correction: codes do! This book not only helps you but it makes it even more challenging. When you don't know what to do, you think it is challenging to find out what to do. But once you know what to do, it is even more challenging, completing the task. You may find it difficult even to make it across a chasm. I loved this book since it made the game even more challenging. It did give away HELPFUL hints and secrets, yet made it hard to complete the task. Therefore, it does not take away the challenge, it provides a greater challenge: completion!

Book Description
Discover How the Best Companies Win Not By Acquiring the Right People--But By Building the Right Organization
The "war for talent" is one battle every company believes it should be waging. But while competitors are busy chasing after the same "hot" individuals, smart companies are doing something infinitely more useful and far more difficult to copy--they're building organizations that make it possible for ordinary people at every desk and cubicle in their companies to perform as if they were stars.
Blowing up the prevailing wisdom that companies must chase and acquire top talent in order to remain successful,
Hidden Value argues instead that the source of sustained competitive advantage already exists within every organization. O'Reilly and Pfeffer, leading experts on organizational behavior and human resources, argue that how a firm creates and uses talent is far more important than how the firm attracts talent. The authors provide vivid, detailed case studies of several organizations in widely disparate industries--including Southwest Airlines, Cisco Systems, The Men's Wearhouse, and NUMMI--to illustrate how long-term success comes from value-driven, interrelated systems that align good people management with corporate strategy.
In a refreshing break from management tomes that force-feed superficial frameworks and trite "rules," the authors instead allow the company stories to take center stage. They guide readers in discovering for themselves how seven different firms maximize talent, why one firm hasn't fully released the hidden value in its work force, and, most importantly, how the winning companies have made it tough for competitors to imitate them. Collectively, the stories reveal a common path to success that places values before strategy, emphasizes implementation over planning, and focuses on getting the best out of all employees, not just individual stars. The authors also explore concerns or questions managers might have about how each company's experience parallels or conflicts with their own.
Providing a rare opportunity for managers to actively participate in an invaluable learning process,
Hidden Value offers a customizable template for building high-performance, people-centered organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical and useful.......2006-12-19
Charles O'Reilly puts out an interesting idea of how to get the most out of people with various management strategies. I worked in a human resources department for a little while and his ideas were among the more useful that I applied. The book is very well written and does a good job of holding your interest. Highly recommend.
The value of being a people-centered organization.......2006-01-27
In a McKinsey & Company's study, "The War for Talent," McKinsey found that of 200 executives interviewed 58 responded that values and culture were absolutely essential in their decision to join, stay with, or leave an organization. The authors believe that by establishing the right value system and culture, companies can make all their employees perform as if they were in the top 10% of their field. The authors further state that companies must find new ways to tap the knowledge, experience, energy, and talents of employees.
Studying several companies that the authors believed had successfully leveraged their "hidden talent," the authors summarized these 6 essential practices:
· These companies place values and culture first
· They make those values real
· They hire people that will appreciate and espouse the company's values
· They invest in people
· They share information widely
· They reward and recognize those who adhere to the company's values.
A key way to have an organization tap this hidden talent is to achieve the status of being a people-centered organization. The authors see successful people-centered organizations have 3 basic themes that are common:
· Each has a well-articulated set of values that are widely shared and act as the foundation for its management practices.
· Each has a remarkable degree of alignment and consistency in the people-centered practices that express its core values
· Each has senior management whose primary roles are to ensure that the values are maintained and constantly made real to all employees in the organization.
Very Interesting.......2005-09-21
Only on Chapter 5. Reading about the excellent practices of these companies makes me want to strive for the best for my employees, also!
The "Value" of this book is certainly "Hidden" from me.............2003-01-31
This book is merely a compilation of case studies. There are few -- if any -- check lists, tables, charts, bullet points, or step-by-step methodologies to help you implement the concepts within your own company or organization. In fact, THERE ARE ONLY 21 PAGES not dedicated exclusively to either a case study and/or an analysis of the various case studies presented within the book. Save your money and purchase "The HR Scorecard", "The Talent Solution", or "Aligning Pay and Results" instead. Very disappointing...
Detailed case descriptions of high performing companies.......2001-12-31
This book tells the story of eight extremely successful companies that manage to bring out the best in their people. The stories are detailed descriptions of the company's backgrounds, strategies, systems and management practices. The stories are also larded with quotes from the company's CEO's, HR managers and employees. Following this approach the authors provide the readers the opportunity to form their own hypotheses about the companies' successes. But the authors also present their interpretations of the case studies.
What these studies show is how these high performing companies have achieved their success by aligning their values, strategies and people. This is something which is easy to understand but hard to do. It requires consistent articulation and implementation of the values and vision and a relentless attention to detail in ensuring that all policies and practices support the company's values. In order to be able to show this kind of consistency a real belief and commitment are needed and a willingness to persevere.
This book shows how high performing companies consciously turn a lot of the conventional management wisdom upside down. For instance:
1. Contrary to what many people now think, recruiting, selecting and retaining unique talent is NOT the prime source of competitive advantage. Although these activities are important, the examples of these extraordinary companies show that it is much more important to build a culture and work system that enables all people to use their talents and develop their talents. A byproduct of this will be that your company will also be better at attracting and retaining people.
2. Values first instead of strategies. The conventional view puts competitive strategy on top and derives from that what structure is needed, what competencies and behaviors are needed and so on. The companies described here work differently. Although they do have competitive strategies these are secondary to their set of guiding values and to the alignment of these values with their management practices. In other words: they have a values-based view of strategy.
3. Respectful and trusting way of dealing with people. Many companies monitor, check and try to control employee behavior. The hidden value companies work differently. In the spirit of Douglas McGregor's book The Human Side of Enterprise, they seem to understand that if you begin by designing systems to protect against the small unmotivated minority, you end up alienating the motivated majority. So they put their people first by treating them respectfully, involving them and trusting them.
Lessons like the ones presented in this book can be found in several other books by for instance Jeffrey Pfeffer himself, David Maister and Jim Collins. What makes this book different and interesting to me is the presentation in the form of detailed case descriptions.
