I agree that these are great journals and sketchbooks. For some reason Amazon does not list the number of pages in the various Watson-Guptill sketchbooks, even though it is printed on the sticker. So this version has 224 neutral pH, nonyellowing archival-quality pages.

Working as a fitness model can be an enjoyable and profitable career. However, there are many pitfalls and dangers to avoid on this path, and for the first time someone who not only works, but has had tremendous success in this field is available to guide you. From creating your first portfolio, to the details of endorsement contracts, fitness model extraordinaire Clark Bartram will advise you, drawing on years of experience. You'll read about the great satisfaction such a career can bring, but perhaps more importantly you'll be told the truth about the reality of being a fitness model. This includes not only what attributes you'll need to succeed, but also your attitude, and how much money you can honestly expect to earn per shoot. In any field, links with people on the 'inside' are often what's needed to get that big break, and there's plenty of insiders in this book sharing their knowledge with you.

It's not only great man-to-man advice in this book though. The beautiful, and very successful Monica Brant offers advice from a woman's perspective, which is of use to both male and female readers. Also, the people behind the cameras talk about what they look for in a model in the 'Lessons From The Other Side' section. All invaluable knowledge. The structure of the text is such that you can read from cover to cover, but also go straight to a particular topic and still have all the information you need.

In short, if you're serious about a career as a fitness model, or just curious about what such a job would involve, then you cannot afford to pass up on this book. Agencies, self-promotion, tricks of the trade, training programs, possible employers, useful resources and even haircuts are all covered. I've found this book an exceptional resource, and my thanks to Clark Bartram for writing it.

It's so refreshing to finally find a book that applies specifically to the interests of fitness models and that covers the topic so thoroughly. Weeding through the books written for fashion models was becoming tiresome, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally came across this book. While reading it, I was ecstatic to find that it was packed full of useful information. I was able to identify the mistakes I've been routinely making and start implementing Clark's invaluable advice. All of the other books I've purchased have not been as useful to me as this one book. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about fitness modeling!

5 out of 5 stars Grounded in reality..........2004-05-21

The thing about Paradise Kiss, is that it starts off in the first volume in a somewhat fantastical style, and then with each volume we get to know the characters a little bit more as they grow into adulthood and get ready to face the real world.

In Volume 4 the show is about to happen Yukari and George's relationship is now not such a sure thing. What seemed like a match in heaven is now seeming to become something that can never truely work out.

I think the thing I like most about this volume is hwo realistically it deals with the relationship of George and Yukari and the triangle of Miwako, Arashi, and Tokumori. This volume and the last volume make it pretty clear that its no longer a fantasy, but its real. Yukari is getting ready for her college exams and finding work as a model, George is still uncomprizing, and the whole Paradise Crew remains optimistic, even when its seems failure is eminant.

Oh, and another thing, guess what! We learn more about Isabella, woohoo!!!!

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

5 out of 5 stars Yeah! Another Gothic Lolita manga^_^.......2003-06-30

If you love Mana, you'll love Isabella. If you love funky Kogaru-Lolita fashions, you'll love Miwako. If you've ever wanted to design beautiful clothes or model or just look at a really cute goth boy, you'll love the others. The art is brilliant! (& very similar to I.N.V.U.)This story is also hillarious^.^

If you love this book, I reccomend Under the Glass Moon.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful!.......2003-06-01

Ai Yazawa does it again. Her gorgeous art makes this book great- for paradise kiss fans or anyone else who happens to open it. Yazawa is a creative genious and her fashion designs are beautiful, using the gothic lolita style that has become increasingly popular in the US. I suggest you read this book...if not for the awesome story, then for the even more awesome art.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Paradise.......2003-05-02

This is a great shoujo/fashion manga by the talented Ai Yazawa, packed full of an amazing attention to fashion...It is a fashion manga after all, it's focus point being on the less sociably acceptable styles ie: Gothic Lolita or in the case of Arashi and his family, punk. Not only are the outfits portrayed in the story fabulous, the story it's self is solid. The drawing ranging from simple and elegant to technical and elegant (this goes back to the detail payed to the fashion aspects). Paradise Kiss revolves around the life of Yukari aka Caroline, who after being hunted down by Arashi, on the streets, to be the model for a fashion show, gets swept up in the world of the Yaza School for the Arts student designer group Paradise Kiss. Paradise Kiss consists of George (Yukari's love intrest, also the head of Parakiss because he designs the clothes), Miwako (who's sister also attended Yaza School for the Arts and is now the top desinger for Happy Berry), Arashi (Miwako's Boyfriend), and Isabella (a stately drag queen, who cooks a mean feast). Yukari who was frustrated with her school and her demanding mother, breaks out into the modeling world...but soon finds things aren't as easy as they seem at first glance, especially not her tangled relationship with George. I can't wait until the next issue comes out in the US, to bad i have no clue when that will be. The Tokyopop website says Paradise Kiss is OT (older teen 16up) but the books say T (teen 13up), so *shrug*, there's a little profanity and a little nudity so you be the judge.

HAIL, CITIZEN LAZLO! The history books say that Richard Nixon resigned because of a bungled break-in at the Watergate Hotel, but that isn't so: Tricky Dick had to change addresses to escape the rabid admiration of Lazlo Toth, one of the most authentic lunatics in the history of American letters. That's "letters" as in literature, because Toth is firmly fictional--but also "letters" in the literal sense, too. The flood of correspondence (complete with songs) that drove Nixon from office has been immortalized in Citzen Lazlo, a very strange and very funny book. Nixon wasn't the only target for Toth, a comic creation of Don Novello, himself better known as Saturday Night Live's Father Guido Sarducci. In a prose style all his own--"To President Ford (the best!) ..."--Novello's equal-opportunity annoyance pecked out effusive missives to huge corporations (McDonald's), kitschy pop stars (Sammy Davis Jr.), and the occasional Third World strongman. Quoth Citizen Lazlo to Spain's Francisco Franco: "You are not just a general--you are truly a Generalissimo! Keep it up!"

    Book Description

Lazlo writes again! Reprising the inspired lunacy that made his first volume of letters a New York Times bestseller, comedian Don Novello slips back into his all-American alter ego, Lazlo Toth, and provides a new round of correspondence with politicians, celebrities, and royalty.

It's a quirky cultural history, social satire with a twist. Here are letters of congratulation-to newly elected Ronald Reagan ("This is my dream come true!") and letters of outrage-to Pepsi ("Take the Madonna commercial off the air!"). Letters filled with fresh ideas-proposing to Swanson a "Fit for a President Microwave Dinner" series, including the Jimmy Carter Camp David Accord Style Fried Chicken and Grits. And letters of advice-how Coca-Cola should handle the "pubic hair in the can of Coke" reference during the Thomas hearings.

And the best part: the replies.

CITIZEN LAZLO! Over 100 new letters. We missed you. 61,000 copies in print.

2 out of 5 stars Tepid collection of juvenile pranks.......2005-09-17

Lazlo Toth - Nixon-loving, airline-food-hating, Imelda-lusting, Russian-Federation-anthem-writing local nut and obsessive complainer - is back for another go at the politicians and corporations, Having talked up the first Lazlo book to my sons, I was anxious to share Don Novello's delightful humor with them. So I picked up the Volume 2 and opened it and random and read aloud the first couple of letters I came upon. They landed with a thud. Went over like a lead balloon. Or a fart in a funeral parlor.

Like the original, this volume consists of a series of chatty, off-kilter letters to famous people and organizations, with the purpose of soliciting unintentionally comical responses. To work, the letters must skate the fine edge between plausibility and absurdity. Sadly, Novello misses the edge nearly every time. Neither does he give an interesting or consistent personality to his fictitious writer, Lazlo Toth. Or appear to have any purpose other than to ridicule his targets. He doesn't reach for satire, or for social commentary beyond the rather pedantic realization that many famous public figures respond to most mail with stuffy form letters.

Maybe I'm getting old. More likely, Novello lost the ability to summon up the anarchic fun that made his first book so funny. Not to mention, some of his targets are onto him! When you get knowing responses from George H.W. Bush's secretary and from (yikes!) Ronald MacDonald --AND YOU PUBLISH THEM!! - something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

For the religiously sensitive (now *there's* something I wasn't when I first read Toth!) the book can be sacrilegious. Novello named his hero for the insane person who defaced Michelangelo's `Pieta' back in the 70s. As if that's not insensitive enough, Toth writes to the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of the Saints to report a phony miracle (something involving chewing gum) through the intercession of California's St. Junipero Serra. This results in a couple of rounds of responses with the cardinal from the Congregation, but goes no further. Had Novello developed Toth's fictitious "St. Junipero Serra Prayer Group" a little more, the accumulated bemused responses might have been slightly humorous. As it is, his miracle correspondence is one of a collection of tossed-off jokes.

The funniest exchanges (and there are a few) provoke shocked responses from the recipients. For instance, Toth's insistence on repopulating the war-depleted Kuwait Zoo with American squirrels and raccoons gets a panicky response from the organization actually involved. And it is surprising how many rather large organizations (GM and Anheiser-Busch) actually seem to read at least some letters and respond to them individually. Most of Toth's letters, though, are just pranks - bearding the lion in its own den.

I wanted to give the book a 2, but for some reason felt the urge to finish it. Maybe I was hoping that the humor would all come together by the end. Alas, it did not. But to give it a 3 implies that it is worth another read. And that, dear reader, is something I cannot imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Move Over, Father Guido!.......2002-06-12

Now that we have imitation Lazlo Toth's - even the Jerkey Boys are derivative, aren't they! - let's not forget that the same guy who puts on the big hat and sunglasses can be someone else when he wants to be.

I just wish he would have lunch with me at Sushi-To-Die-For?

    Are you game?

4 out of 5 stars LIke most sequels, it's not a potent as the original.......2000-05-09

As interesting as it is to see Novello expand upon his letter writing, there's something disappointing about this second volume. Perhaps it's the introductio of Lazlo into a world in which he's already known. The responses from correspondents who already "get the joke" make one feel as though they're peeking behind the Wizard's curtain.

Still, given the pungence of the concept and the quality of Novello's writing, this couldn't help but be another good read. It just couldn't possibly live up to the original volume.

5 out of 5 stars As funny (for different reasons) as 'The Lazlo Letters'.......2000-04-05

The original book ('The Lazlo Letters') was set in the mid-70s and was essentially a tremedously funny, well-executed goof on Watergate and its participants. 'Citizen Lazlo' is wider in its timeframe (1977 - 1992) and focus (all over the map).

For flat out hilarity, nothing can beat (as mentioned by an earlier reviewer) the "Fit For a President Microwave TV Dinner" idea that 'Toth' pitches to the Campbell Soup Company. [Sample: Nixon-Mao Frozen Chinese Banquet...eat the meal that ended 23 years of hostility.]

My favorite has got to be his pitch to Kinney Shoes for a new advertising campaign based on "The Wind Beneath My Wings," entitled "The Feet Within My Shoes":

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?

Tho' you're the farthest parts of me

I can run faster than a beagle

You are the feet beneath my knees

The cadence of these letters continues the unique, hilarious style perfected by Novello/Toth in his first book. Check out a sample greeting to Nicolae Ceausescu in 1988: "Belated Happy Birthday! Stand up! You deserve it!"

    Truly laugh-out-loud funny stuff.

One note of interest: since this is the second volume, some of the respondents are in on the joke. Those that are respond with a matching level of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, funny stuff.......1999-05-09

I hadn't looked at my copy of the book for a couple of years, and happened to find it in the bookshelf in the garage while getting ready for a garage sale. While I sat watching people turn their noses up at my junk, I laughed myself silly at Lazlo's amazing letters. His suggestions for "Historical" TV Dinners (Jimmy Carter's Camp David Accord Chicken and Grits) finally led Swansons (aka Campbell Soups) to just ignore him -- rather than send him more coupons for soup. It's a great look into the inner working of the Public Relations departments of large corporations and governments. Whenever you're throwing a garage sale, this book is a must read. Any other time, too.

2 out of 5 stars Wanted: Text Editor with Red Pen.......2007-04-13

I know that Fredric Jameson is highly regarded in LitCrit and CultCrit circles and rightly so: his longstanding project of extending a neo-Marxist style of interpretation and critique into the postmodern era is distinctive and provocative. As usual with Jameson, I think there may be some important ideas in this book as well, but I can't be quite sure. The reason for this hedge is that this work seems to me to be written in a style that is even more painfully turgid and willfully opaque than most of his other works. Single sentences sometimes form whole paragraphs, their length often further bloated by long parentheticals inserted into their interior. The writing is also rife with obscure references that are never explained or pursued and seem like gratuitous highbrow name-dropping. The overall impression is that Jameson seems deliberately to avoid ever saying in a few clear and revealing words or sentences (even occasionally) what can be expanded into masses of dense scholarly verbiage. This especially bothers me because I do think that, buried beneath these verbal heaps, are some important and challenging ideas. But, I literally found myself so overloaded and confused by the dense and structually confusing prose that I continually had to go back and scan whole sentences just to figure out their basic grammatical form -- not to mention the fact that by the time I reached the end of a 6 or 8 line sentence (of which there are examples on virtually every page), I had forgotten how it began. There's just no excuse for this type of elitist, exclusionary writing, especially for a person capable of quite clear and precise thought -- and more especially for a figure who positions himself as a neo-Marxist who might otherwise have a good deal to say to a more 'popular' audience. My suggestion would be that his publisher insist on a competent editor working over his text for simple readability -- or is this 'neo-Marxist' such an elite "name" that no publisher would dare propose this for fear of losing the author from her "stable"? Perhaps such a writing style is a result of the author's long engagement with other 'postmodern theorists,' but I, for one, don't think that the complexity of prose is any reliable index of the force of the ideas that it attempts to articulate -- quite the contrary.

      Book Description

Southern Appalachian native Dan Levenson and Mel Bay Publications present Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch - A Guide for the Claw-less! This book teaches clawhammer banjo the way we play, not the way others say. It really begins as though you really have NO knowledge of how to play the five string banjo clawhammer style. Based on Dan's innovative Meet the Banjo™ program (where Dan brings 15 banjos and teaches players who may have never held a banjo), this book assumes no prior experience. Beginning at the beginning, Dan presents a brief history of the 5-string banjo then goes over the parts of the banjo, holding the banjo, right and left hand positions and his basic clawhammer strum. Even the strum is broken down into the steps of the finger and thumb. You are guided through the chords, the scale and then the individual notes of each of 12 jam session favorite tunes from scratch. Includes 2 reference CD's with all exercises, tunes (slow and up to speed), and a fiddle version of each tune.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not the best available.......2005-03-22

This is a good beginning tutorial for clawhammer style banjo and does assume the reader has no prior musical experience, just as the author states. However, like Pete Seeger's hallowed tome "How to Play the 5 String Banjo", Dan Levenson starts the student off in a tuning that will present him with challenges down the road. Seeger even states in the most current edition of "How to Play..." that if he had the time to revise his book one of the first things he would change would be to start off the student in "G" tuning. While this might seem like a minor detail it's just as agravating as the occassional book employing non standard tablature.

My recommendation for anyone (new or experienced) who wants to learn the instrument in this style would be to get Ken Perlman's "Clawhammer Style Banjo" AND the available DVD's that follow the text. While some reviewers have faulted this book as being a little too advanced for them, the videos do a wonderful job of presenting the technical material in a manner that provides easy access to the more comprhensive material. Levenson's book has videos available as well but his teaching methods, while undoubtedly effective, are somewhat unique. That isn't a put down as "Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch" is a good book, just not one you can grow with as easily as Perlman's.

Most students will wind up with a number of books anyway and it's often beneficial to have the same information presented in different ways. For some, "Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch" will undoubtedly be just the ticket to unlocking the frailing banjo's potential. For me, it was Perlman's book and videos.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!! This is THE clawhammer banjo book for rookies.......2004-06-28

This book is awesome. Thank you Dan. After struggling with other books, this book really made it happen for me. I am a real banjo player now! Going to get the companion DVDs next.

Dan is an excellent teacher -- the guy I take some lessons with (an AMAZING player) says he could have saved himself 5 years if this book had been out 20 years ago!

What are you waiting for? If you want to learn old-time banjo, THIS IS THE BOOK!!

      Book Description

Author and speaker Christine Hrib Karpinski takes readers through all the steps necessary to purchase and rent out a vacation home. This book contains practical, hands-on advice that shows the reader how to do it without property management companies, and keep 100 percent of the profits. It offers realistic strategies to create a situation in which renters pay the mortgage, while still allowing the owner several weeks a year in that little slice of paradise.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to read.......2007-09-11

For a person like me who is going to start in the Vacation Rental Business, this book was very helpful and informative. For someone who has experience in the business maybe will find it too elementary or too basic. For me it was a good start.

      4 out of 5 stars A great starting point............2007-08-28

I own 5 rental properties, 2 are vacation rentals. I bought this book with pretty high expectations. Well, even though I've been doing this for 15 years, Christine still had some new advice to share. I thought her formula was great for some areas, but in Colorado Ski country it just doesn't work.

I love how she does give a couple different points of view pertaining to financing your vacation home.

I would also preferred more depth, that a chapter on properties outside the US, and buy multiple properties. But as some reviewers have stated, it is an excellent primer.

I do think that her book on booking rentals, The Vacation Rental Organizer is a very useful organizer for the money. I intend to purchase one each year.

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Useful Primer on Vacation Rentals.......2007-08-01

I have to laugh at the previous two reviews, obviously written by the same person, an admitted student with a bone to pick with the author. Christine is the most well-known expert in the very small field of vacation rental consultants. She literally "wrote the book" to walk potential investors, vacationers, and home owners into successfully taking advantage of the blossoming vacation rental market.

This student disagrees with Christine's recommendations that owners not rent to those under 25 years old, then proceeds to show a perfect example of why owners shouldn't. He attempts to trash her reputation, rather than someone's rental property. I'm a rental owner and have the same rule, based on personal experience and the many experiences of friends and acquaintances. I imagine this student has stayed in 1 or 2 rentals and as a result is now an "expert"...much like the hotel commercials we all laugh at.

As the student says, some of the information in Christine's books is on the Internet, as is information from every book ever written. However, this new version of her "How to Rent Vacation Properties by Owner" contains everything anyone needs to know to look for, purchase, furnish, and rent a vacation home. Some of the information is common sense but much is 'insider information' from her many years as a seminar leader, training thousands of owners and being a 'by owner' property manager herself.

Take the previous reviews for what they are, feeble attempts to get even with someone that disagrees with him. If you want to learn about this industry and how to rent 'by owner' get this book and read it cover to cover and decide for yourself how valuable it really is.

1 out of 5 stars Nice title, but way too basic info, too wordy (filler).......2007-07-31

I thought the title of the book was exactly what I was looking for. I had a property to rent and thought about making it a vacation rental. So, I bought the book thinking it would help point out some not-so-obvious issues about renting a vacation property. But after reading it, I was disappointed with the lack of any real advice or tips. There are a A LOT of words, but they seem to be mostly filler with only very limited and basic useful information. I would not recommend this book to anyone interested in running a real business.

2 out of 5 stars Limited and biased.......2007-07-19

I purchased this book with the intention of gaining a working knowledge of vacation rentals to start a small vacation rental project in Baja California, in Mexico. This guide was not particularly helpful at all, providing only rudimentary information that was already somewhat obvious. It also relies on some dangerous business practices, fundamentally on speculating on the property that you are going to buy and trying to make significant profit that way. It seems to be very limited and unprofessional, almost hokey, in its view of vacation rentals.

I was personally offended as a student in that it explicitly recommends discriminating against students or anyone under 25 as customers.
