Book Description
Award-winning artist Qu Lei Lei offers an inspirational view of art from the Chinese perspective. Instead of looking at the sketch as an end in itself, he focuses on the work as personal fulfillment for the artist and as a valued meditation. All the essential techniques are here—from choosing and using materials to mixing the ink to mastering brushstrokes. With the natural world as his subject, Lei Lei pulls out key features—water, trees, landscapes—and focuses on practical ways of depicting their different varieties. A master class covers techniques for capturing pets at play, and for conveying the spirit of all living creatures

A good little book..........2004-08-06
This was a great "over-the-shoulder" sketchbook that held my interest throughout. I loved the writer's conversational style, and he was able to demonstrate many techniques and encourage me to begin humbly with my sketching. I thought it was well worth the money, if for no other reason than the shading information.
ABSOLUTELY UNINSPIRING AND DULL.......2003-12-28
The sketches given as examples are of very poor quality, the selection of themes is random and unorganized, nothing is explained to the fullest, instruction is vague, + there is no tips on composition.
In short: another of these books that go step 1), step 2) and poof the drawing is finished without the instructor spelling out steps 3,4,5,6.
The selection of drawing subjects is extremely restrictive or the author just lacked inspiration; it's just draw a little of this, than a little of that, with no finishing techniques and no idea on how to group the objects.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
There are plenty of better books, such as from Ernest Watson, Ferdinand Petrie, Wendon Blake and more (even if those guys are oldies; they remain goodies)
Beautiful sketches I still wish I could master.......2002-10-06
This book is a pleasantly composed item with very beautiful sketches. The author gives very good information and examples on materials and techniques used, and it is clear that this book helped me, but only a little....
I loved the fact that it was not overpowered with text and I would probably be able to copy the sketches in the book fairly well. Unfortunately I don't think this book helped me produce my own sketches from my personal observations. I thnk it is too advanced for the first-time drawer, or the drawer with a minimum of skill and even less confidence...
Not for Beginners.......2001-09-09
Beginners won't really benefit from this book. The author's vague description of perspective confuses rather than explains. The book resembles a sketchbook with some notes dropped into it. I would recommend The Art of Drawing and Pencil Drawing Techniques over this thing anyday.
The Complete Sketching Book.......2001-08-15
I found This book very helpful. I needed some help with shading and found the help I needed

Since Vogue Knitting's rebirth in 1982, it's been not just a magazine for knitters, but a guide to the cutting edge of fashionable knitwear. Great design is timeless, and this collection of 45 sweaters from top designers is the cream of a 15-year crop. Most 90's knitters will go nuts for the elegant, understated designs of Adrienne Vittadini; the technically brilliant cables of Donna Karan (including her famous-among-knitters "Enchanted Forest" sweater); the rich colors and textures of Missoni; the sporty lines of Calvin Klein. There are sweaters for every style and skill level (including 8 "Very Easy Very Vogue" patterns that are perfect for beginning knitters), and directions are clear and complete, with updated yarn information. Rarely have so many appealing knit designs been concentrated in one book. --Barrie Trinkle

“Vogue Knitting editors have gathered...45 sweater patterns....Among the designers represented are Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Adrienne Vittaddini, and Missoni, among others. The oversize book is both very attractive and user friendly. Beautiful color photos are matched with clear instructions and graphs. Everything here looks fresh and modern, and each project is graded according to difficulty.”—Booklist.

Start w/the Bubble Sweater & work up to the Enchanted Forest.......2003-12-23
I positively love this book. How can you go wrong with the patterns for the Enchanted Forest cardigan, the Bubble Sweater and the Counterpane Pullover all in one book? I am also fond of the handsome Missoni Man's (or women's) Cardigan with a doubled shawl collar (easily do-able, even for those with intermediate skills) and the Cropped Hooded Sweater from Joan Vass. I've made three of those -- it's easy to substitute yarns (just double-strand something pretty), there is little shaping and the result is fabulous.
The only problem I have with the Vogue knitting books is the lack of detail in the photographs. It would help to see close-ups of the knitted fabric, stitch designs, and even the yarn itself. Perhaps future Vogue collections will include at least photos of the yarn, much the same way as Vogue Knitting magazine does now.
I was a bit surprised by the other reviews -- I feel this collection is full of wearable designs (not just "mod gorgeous") for all skill levels. There are a number of handsome cabled designs, and the Missoni One-Piece Tee is quite stunning. The Bubble Sweater has been a great favorite with knitters for years and is flattering on anyone. Start with that -- and work up to the Enchanted Forest.
I recommend this book. I've knit about a third of the patterns, a couple of them more than once. I've found it easy to substitute yarns and even to vary the sizing on some of the patterns. My next project from this collection will be Perry Ellis' long Fair Isle Crew Neck. The designs are inspirational and a lot of fun to knit.
Designs not so chic; not for beginners.......2003-02-18
The sweater designs looked plain as if they were taken from each designer's bargain bin. There wasn't much that inspired me to knit one of the patterns right away. Also there were only a handful of patterns for the beginner -- the rest were forintermediate and expert knitters.
Beginners need not apply!.......2000-11-02
The majority of the patterns in this book require to you be an "expert" or "experienced" knitter. As a beginner/intermediate, that left me with very little to choose from. I was also disappointed in the lack of true wearability of most of these patterns. That aside, I like classic, time tested, designs that are updated to look contemporary, and did not find these appealing. Each designer seemed to be trying to out do the other, and some are way over the top. If you're an expert knitter who's looking for gimmicky sweaters to "WOW" your friends- this book would come in handy; everyone else will likely be disappointed.
Good collection from past Vogue issues.......1999-12-01
Some sporty styles, some classics -- all at varying skill levels, so anyone can find something in this book to knit. Most of the sweaters are from more recent (last 10 years) magazine issues, so you may have at least a few of these already. Others I haven't seen before, even though they look fairly current. If a yarn is no longer available, the author offers a substitute. As usual, the knitting instructions are clearly laid out, so knitting these sweaters should not be troublesome. For simpler designs, Malcolm has published a very easy, very vogue edition which also has a nice variety, mainly for a beginning or early intermediate knitter. But again, beginners or intermediates can find a lot for them in this volume as well.

Actually.... 4 1/2 stars, but I can't choose that...........2004-06-18
This is the first Outland collection, and Berkeley Breathed writes in the introduction:
"I'm proud of the 'toons in this book. I had more fun drawing many of these than usual. As in Bloom County usual. Look at the earlier Outlands reproduced here. You can see me playing, experimenting, even doodling, looking for unexplored nooks and creative crannies. But when I look at these myself, I smile because I know that like the wild caribou, I was doomed to return to familiar territory. Outland is, of course, Bloom County without the continuing narrative that a daily appearance allows. But Bloom County was never about children or cats or penguins. It was about a loopy perspective - my dubious legacy to this world, and in plentiful evidence within this volume. Enjoy. I have. But no more than finally getting to compare myself to a wild caribou."
After years of creating the wildly popular and successful 'toon "Bloom County" Berke Breathed scaled back the strip to a Sunday-only offering called "Outland". During the same time he was beginning his work on his wonderfully written and illustrated children's books.
In Bloom County we were offered characters that grew familiar, even in their various deficiencies. The strips were episodic, frequently thoughtful and almost always hilarious. At the same time we came to identify with the various characters: Milo Bloom the precocious pre-teen and his paranoid buddy Binkley. Cutter John, the paraplegic Vietnam veteran who led his buddies on role-playing Star Trek adventures. Steve Dallas, the chain-smoking slime-ball lawyer who got his come-uppance over and over, usually as a result of his insensitivity to women. Oliver Wendell Jones, the young computer hacker who caused panic at the Pentagon, on Wall Street and in his school's science class.
Outland doesn't have the same feel as it's not episodic at all. Each Sunday comic "stands alone" - and each one is full of Breathed's inventive artwork and the same brilliantly conceived satire. I don't feel like the story stands still long enough to identify or care as much about the characters, and for that reason Outland isn't as satisfying to me as Bloom County.
Still, there's good stuff here and in addition to revisiting some old friends Breathed gets pokes in on cosmetic surgery, video dating, male bonding and 1-900 numbers.
Book Description
Al Brodax was the producer and co-author of the ground-breaking animation, Yellow Submarine. In this book he recalls a frenzied, madcap escapade that came to be reflected in an enduring piece of screen history. In addition to Al and The Beatles, the "cast" included more than a dozen animators, platoons of inkers, background artists, soundmen, cameramen, and various essential expediters. They produced, aside from the film, more than a dozen pregnancies and one or two marriages. This generously illustrated book is a special gift to fans of the Beatles, of Yellow Submarine and of spirited, flavorful writing about movies.
Customer Reviews:
It's a real nowhere book..........2006-07-09
My biggest problem with this book, is how much has been written in quotes. Conversations are spilled out in dialog that doesn't even begin to read like it actually happened - but the quotes lead you to believe it has been transcribed accurately from history, eather than the memory of a 78 year-old from events that occured many years ago. I can understand adding narrative, and even taking some liberties to make it interesting, but it reads so blatantly like it never happened. Especially the conversations with John. I can't even begin to believe for a second that it went down anything even remotely like what is laid out in this book. Which frankly, taints everything I'm reading - it all seems like propaganda, fiction, SCIENCE fiction.
Yes, I suppose there's some enlightening information in here too, scattered among the storyline, and the questionable recollection, but not nearly enough to make this book worth buying. And the amount of pictures, photos, sketches, etc. is almost non-existant. This book doesn't tell history, it's trying to create history. If you can get it for free, than sure, get it - put it on your shelf next to your other Beatle books. But if you're looking to walk away with something new, without leaving a bad taste in your mouth, I'd pass.
book offers valuable insight to motion picture.......2005-01-02
I think it is worthwhile to read both books published to date about the motion picture "Yellow Submarine". The other book available reflects highly detailed documentation and interviews with numerous people who worked on the production of the movie. This book, in contrast, offers the firsthand recollections of the movie's executive producer and his staff, the people who got the ball rolling for this movie in the first place. I think there is some value in reading a book like this, written from the viewpoint of recollections more so than research and documentation. The author's personal recollections, right or wrong, even with some apparent chronological flaws, offer an interesting insight which makes for worthwhile reading.
"Yellow Submarine", the motion picture, was, I think, a psychedelic masterpiece, made at a time when the animation business as a whole was at the end of its Silver Age. It represents the Beatles brilliantly. Some people did not think highly of it SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WAS A CARTOON, which reflects a disappointing viewpoint that has always existed toward animation as an art form. I thought Beatles fans were smarter than that but some weren't. It is therefore most welcome now to see these fine books about this motion picture along with the superb DVD release of the movie itself.
Review by Yellow Submarine Animator, Norman Drew.......2004-10-29
If you're curious about the genesis of the movie Yellow Submarine you're well advised to buy both UP PERISCOPE YELLOW and INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE.
If you've read other reviews here, you'll know UP PERISCOPE YELLOW is a first person account by the producer, Al Brodax; and INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE (see my review of this excellent book also) by Dr. Bob Hieronumus, Ph.D., is an anthology of keen insight and probing interviews with a number of core artists whose creative genius built and sailed the Sub into our Collective Consciousness forever.
Each book is written from a different perspective. Until more volumes from Al and Dr. Bob (and even we the crew) are forthcoming, these two vital books will serve as comprehensive 'bookends' for your Yellow Submarine reference shelf.
UP PERSICOPE YELLOW recaptures those wild, zany, chaotic, heart-racing days of creative frenzy during the Sub's construction. Moreover, Al Brodax's account begins BEFORE the Sub was even a yellow and orange gleam in any of the crew's eyes. As well as providing a fascinating and hilarious back story of what led to the concept of the movie itself, he accompanies you through the whole process of production from the producer's perspective.
Whether your cinematic interest is animation or live action, this lightning narrative zaps you through high-flying moves, fancy footwork and the 'thinking on your feet' involved in producing a unique feature film; from initial concept to the megastress of rights negotiation, sales, budgets, deadlines, navigating minefields of egos; and out of the chaos, delivering a finished film--even to tweaking the projector controls at the Grand Premiere, with an additionally hilarious account of how to 'imprint' a missing copyright notice on the film emulsion when it's in the projector ready to roll! (You have to read the book to find this one!)
Al's swashbuckling talent with hyperbole lends a 'you are there' breathless excitement and zany hilarity to his recapturing of those 'London '60's Days' on Yellow Submarine.
The book shows a sensitive side, revealing his personal angst, agonies, ecstasies and sorrow involved during the film's production (tragic, early death of a vital and cherished work associate). This will surprise many who believe the stereotype of flinty, unfeeling, humorless producers. Brodax shares his full emotions in this book.
As an aside, we crew were very cramped for desk space at TVC. Fellow animator Tom Halley and I were stationed at animation desks in a small office, which contained a third desk (with phone) that was 'time-shared' by Al Brodax, Abe Goodman and various TVC management personnel. It was a unique perspective as a humble Y.Sub. deckhand-animator,(think: Jack Lemmon's Ensign Pulver in the movie, 'Mister Roberts') occupying a desk beside the officers on the bridge, trying to block out the chaos and concentrate on drawing. It was also a great place to observe firsthand what was involved minute by minute, day by day in the management and production of a classic film. This book gets you even closer, on a wider, 'before, during and after production' timeline.
Another aspect of being a fly at the animation desk on the ceiling syndrome: next door to our small office was an anteroom-more like a broom cupboard, where Jack Stokes and Bob Balser assembled their storyboards, running the sound track with 'workprint' film on a Movieola (editing machine) forward and backward for weeks on end. By the end of production we knew most of the songs forward and backward.
And, by the end of this excellent first-person account by the producer of Yellow Submarine, you'll know what's involved in a production, which itself seemed to be going forward and backward--at the same time--with all the hair-pulling and gnashing of teeth that involved.
A great cinema history book by LIMELIGHT PUBLISHERS; a great write by AL BRODAX; a great read for YOU.
Stormy Seas.......2004-09-13
With the recent DVD release of the renovated and digitally remastered Beatles' animated epic YELLOW SUBMARINE, a whole new generation has come to discover the delights of this 1960's flower power masterpiece. And with the legendary "Hey Bulldog" sequence - deleted from all but the original British prints - reinstated in all its bizarre glory, Beatles fans can at last experience the full version of this psychedelic animated odyssey as it was originally meant to be seen.
As one of the animators on YELLOW SUBMARINE, I would say that the year I spent working on the film was perhaps the single most exciting period of my nearly 50 year career in the animation business; made even more memorable by the fact that I became engaged during production to Diana, my wife of 35 years, who worked on the "LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS" sequence .
And now, over 30 years after the film was first released, two new books (INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE and UP PERISCOPE YELLOW) have been published; each describing for the first time the whole astonishing behind-the-scenes story of how the film was made. The struggle to produce anything resembling a final script while production surged inexorably on past the writers towards an impossible deadline, the creative arguments, the personality clashes, the budgetary nightmares, the physical kidnapping of the film - with the whole thing being propelled by the sheer exhilaration of knowing that we were all taking part in an astonishing revolution in animated films - all these elements are well recounted in both books.
Whilst INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE tells the story of the production from the point of view of the directors and the creative team, Al Brodax's new book, UP PERISCOPE YELLOW tells it from the producer's perspective. As might be expected, the accounts differ markedly. Conflict between movie directors and producers is as old as Hollywood itself, but its roots go far back past the Renaissance, when artists and their patrons continually argued over differing visions of art and its monetary worth. Animating frantically below decks, the artists on YELLOW SUBMARINE were seldom party to the ongoing dramas up on the bridge; but our favourite pub, the nearby Dog and Duck, was an extremely efficient rumour mill. All of us were well aware that the odyssey of the YELLOW SUBMARINE, thrilling though it was, was by no means smooth sailing!
It is rare that the story of the making of a film as ground-breaking as YELLOW SUBMARINE has been told from the point of view of both the directors and the producer, so we are extremely fortunate that each side has now published its memoirs - even if it is more than three decades after the event! Al Brodax's UP PERISCOPE YELLOW is exceptionally well written, telling his version in a fast-moving, stream-of-consciousness style which vividly portrays the producer's role as the meat in the sandwich between the hard-nosed studio deal-makers and the creative spirits of the film industry. My main criticism is that it could have been improved with more pictures and, most important of all, an index.
The debate about who said what and who did what on YELLOW SUBMARINE seems set to continue for quite some time. But there is one undeniable fact in all of this - if Al Brodax hadn't stuck his neck out as producer and taken a chance on producing an animated feature all those years ago, the phenomenon that was the YELLOW SUBMARINE would never have set sail on its fantastic voyage. For that we all owe him a vote of thanks.
great book.......2004-09-05
This writer is a Beatles fan. As can be seen by the conflicting reviews of this book the tumultuous production of The Yellow Submarine has left some of the participants still spinning with indignation.
This, after more than 35 years have passed.
Further, it is absurd that artists and writers who helped create that film, talents who surely have long since moved on in life, should be organized into a group of indignant reviewers who do not substantiate their complaints nor lay out their various views individually and specifically. What criticism they do submit, en masse, doesn't rise above the trivial and petulant, suggesting emotion might be at work more than substance. To substantiate claims of lying, the critics simply offer contrary views, alternate memories, and even hearsay. All of this appears to have begun from a critical revue written here by a Robert Hieronimus, who has himself written a book on the same subject (is this temerity or merely self-serving?), a book that includes many quotes from the very people who are now writing further criticisms of Brodax's book here on Amazon.com, as if there is a campaign being conducted, a kind of vendetta, an ugly ganging up. To what end? As a Beatles fan I ask who cares if two people have three opinions on how Fred came to be created? I want to hear all the stories, all the memories. The artist has his view, the writer his, the producer his, and God Hers. What's new?
Up Periscope Yellow is a good book, a personal view of what went down during the making of a flawed but classic film, a film, were I not a Beatles fan, I would even call amateurish: clever in places, crude and inept in other places - far below the quality of contemporary Disney films they so cleverly mocked putting Mickey Mouse hats on the Blue Meanies.
But I love the Beatles and the film is therefore incomparable.
It's said that the cemetery is full of indispensable men, but The Yellow Submarine had five indispensable men, one was obviously Al Brodax, the other four are equally obvious. It can also be said that without those five, nobody would be giving The Yellow Submarine a second viewing - let alone calling it a classic. Up Periscope Yellow gives the view from the perspective of the one indispensable man among the many talents actually making that film, especially interesting for its `inside baseball' view, full of wonderful anecdotes and overflowing with sub plots.
Beatles fans are only enriched by reading it.

Yes, it is that good!.......2005-10-31
I enthusiastically second Judith Thomas's opinion about how good this book is, and Heifitz's goofily inspired lyrics fit the rhythm perfectly, and hilariously, in each case. I'm thrilled to find copies in the marketplace here, since friends borrowed and kept both of mine many years ago (grrr), and for some unfathomable reason it's no longer in print, and I can't remember all of these gems. A wonderful gift for musicians, music students (a fun way for them to practice sight-singing), and classical music fans. (I gave about a dozen as gifts when it first came out, and in each case the recipient would spend the next half hour minimum nodding his/her head, singing quietly, giggling manically, and going to the next piece, while fending off with elbows all the people who wanted to look at the book too. Each time.) Check out the irreverently bombastic "Take out the Trash" lyrics to Beetohoven's 5th symphony, or the recipe for Plato's favorite sandwich to a famous Brahms symphony's theme. Or the bizarrely rhythmic lyrics to the "Golliwog's Cakewalk."
A memorable way to remember.......2002-04-13
For those who enjoy silly turns of corner in humor, coupled with main themes of music, you will enjoy this compilation immensely. Not always obvious, we learn during a Beethoven Concerto theme, "Don't play chess with your daugh - ter...she knows more than you taught.....her." The great Sigmund Freud is not safe in this collection either..paired with the chorale theme from Beethoven's 9th, "Sigmund Freude never hoid a concert due to chronic slouch, All his ritzy, somewhat schitzy patients tied him to his couch." You get the idea. A delicous gift for people who get the giggles over zaney stuff.

A quick knocked out add-on.......2007-08-15
This is an adventure module designed to bring a Western genre to the Open Game License (OGL) D20 system. It has an impressive list of weapons and materials like wagons and equipment. It also includes some very useful information for businesses - if your steely eyed gunslinger decides to take up a more sedate way of life.
What this fails at is heart. It feels like it was quickly knocked out to fill out the roster. Perhaps those involved do love the Western genre - but that feeling did not translate into the product. It is poorly organized, containing no table of contents and a simple index. I was alarmed to see no list of skills and feats - only to find that list at the back of the book. I was relieved to find it, but a Table of Contents would have helped me find it earlier.
Over all, this may be a useful resource but I will rely on better prepared material (such as Sidewinder: Recoiled) for actual gaming content. I feel like this product paid less attention to game balance then its competitor.

Beginner's Book.......2007-09-27
Having read more than 6 other beginner books, I must give this 4 stars; 3 for the book and 5 for the CD. It is clearly written, gives a fairly solid foundation but lacks the following;
[] Clear entry and exit points - See Schlossberg
[] Candlesticks - See Pring (Candlesticks)
[] Fundamental analysis - See Jagerson (Profiting with Forex)
[] Basics - Go online or Archer/Bickford book
[] Mental conditioning - have not found a good book yet.
Nowhere in the editorial reviews or the back cover does it say that these topics are missing, so I had to mark the book down for that. The only reason I gave the CD 5 stars is because, once you have read the other books, the CD becomes valuable for beginners wanting to grasp setups that show entry and exit strategies.
Fair Book.......2007-05-23
This was the first forex book I bought,at that time it seemed very interesting, the system seemed very simple at a glance but after playing around with it I realise this was not for me.If you are new to forex it's a good start, not knocking the book it did arouse my interest to seek out other books. The momentum brake out is Raghee favorite pattern, for me the 34 esp.moving average is to far away from the market. A better combo is
8 and 21 SMA knowing how to use this combo will yield better results.
smarmy come-on.......2007-03-13
Have you seen the smarmy come-ons for shonky products? Sometimes advertised on TV or radio. With a free 800 phone number you can call, for free material. Sounds promising, you think. But then when the literature arrives, it's little more than a push to buy the "premium" stuff. That is what Horner's book feels like. She waffles all over the place, with interminable babble about the greatness of her method. Yet a careful parsing of the book shows little substance. All the while "subtly" mentioning her website with the hot stuff. Bait and switch.
Well, you could save some money and avoid this book. But unlike some others who suggested you visit her website and drop $400, I would recommend also avoiding it. Given the vapidness of the book, it is not a good precursor.
A terribly expensive brochure-an affront to financial literature.......2007-03-06
Any other book you buy on forex is going to be better than this one. You'll be left wondering how it is that the author could possibly feel that this is going to benefit anyone (except herself). A real disappointment. If I could have rated it less than 1 star I would have.
A come on to sell you her propriatary items.......2007-02-11
The book in general was fun to read but very lacking in any real technical analysis. The author simply uses a modified version of channels which she then purports as the end all in support resistance, entry and exits. If you want to get the indicators she uses they will cost you another 400 dollars! I thought this was a very tacky attempt at promoting herself. To me her book is just a way for her to build up her own trading account.
