The Art of Selling Art
ASIN: 0913069493 |
Book Description
Gallery personnel often use the term collector less precisely than it is used in this book. Clients are not "collectors", under Zella Jackson's definition, unless they leave your gallery with both an acquisition and their desire for art unfulfilled. This practical manual will assist you in creating collectors and in making these collectors "your collectors". Zella's new book takes you step by step from establishing yourself as an expert to creating private and corporate collectors.
Customer Reviews:
Art should be sold this way!.......2000-05-23
The premise of the book is that art is NOT merely just an impulse purchase over which we have little control as many art industry people erroneously believe. I know that this is something that I believed for a long time and I know many of my own customers believe this also. But with Zella's book, she explains how to separate the "one-time only" customers from the customers who are "potential collectors" who are anxious to become part of the art world, and who want to be "wooed" and "romanced" by a dealer they trust on an ongoing basis. These type of people, and you only need about 300 of them in your collector base, are always thrilled and eager to talk to you and buy new art from you as many as 10 times a year. Zella explains how to create loyalties with these type of people and then she explains how to turn these individuals into your own salesforce who will give you lots of referrals, repeat business, and a lot of them will do art shows for you in their own homes and offices. I've personally used a lot of her ideas in my own business and they work really well. It's a lot of work to do everything that she talks about, but if you are serious about being in this business for the rest of your life, than you cannot go on without learning everything in this book, and her first book, "The Art of Selling Art".

Book Description
After forty years in the glamour business, Oscar de la Renta remains a vital name in both American fashion and Paris Haute Couture - a style-setter who has dressed famous beauties from Marisa Berenson to Kate Moss, Claudine Auger to Sarah Jessica Parker. With stunning images by such master lensmen as Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, and Bert Stern, along with photographs from the designer's personal archives, this book captures the unique charm that is Oscar. The book covers his earliest childhood memories, his inspirations, his houses and gardens, the fidelity he has demonstrated to his artistic vision, and the women he has dressed. Oscar opens a window on his private world, sharing his style of living and humanitarian outlook. Oscar de la Renta is a never-before-seen look at one of the world's most influential tastemakers - as timeless as the clothes he continues to create.
Customer Reviews:
How could you not love Oscar?.......2005-04-28
Oscar de la Renta is a brilliant designer and throughout this large book his talent radiates off the page. It has insightful quotes from both Oscar and his clients. It really helped my love for fashion grow with the knowledge of his struggling background and undying work ethic. A must have for any fashion student or admirer of beautiful things. Hey, if you can't buy one of his dresses, mine as well own some pictures of them.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A look at Batgirl's early screwups, and her motivations, well before the Joker blew out her spine. Barbara Bordon is a fun loving, bad guy arse kicking, black leather clad redhead brilliant bombshell. She revels in the fact, and has a lot of fun in the process, as you can see in this book.
Still one of my favorite Mini-Series.......2007-08-10
Still one of my favorite Mini-Series, mostly thanks to the beautiful artwork by Marcos Martin, but it's a great retelling of the Batgirl origin. Essential for any Barbara Gordon fans, like me :)
A welcome look back at a classic heroine.......2006-07-31
DC Comics' Batgirl: Year One trade paperback collects the entire 9-issue 2003 series by Scott Beatty, Chuck Dixon, Marcos Martin and Alvaro Lopez.
I'll admit to having a total fanboy crush on Batgirl, so I was eagerly anticipating this re-telling of her origin. Given the fact that Robin: Year One was quite good and Batman: Year One is one of the greatest Batman stories ever, the bar was set pretty high for this series. For the most part, Dixon et al do not disappoint.
Chuck Dixon is uniquely familiar with the Batman supporting cast, so he was the perfect choice for this project. He and Beatty serve up a relatively lighthearted tale in which Barbara Gordon's attempt to defy her father's wishes turns into an unexpected career fighting crime. The series covers her initial adventures, her unlikely nemesis the Killer Moth, early encounters with Batman, and team-ups with the Black Canary and Robin. The only drawback is that Batgirl's motives never seem equal to the choices she makes. Even Batman pointed this out when asking her why she chose this particular life. Still, the series is enjoyable, and maintains a fun and lighthearted feel throughout, particularly the times where Batgirl and Robin interact.
The fanboy in me might have preferred someone like Adam Hughes or Terry Dodson to provide artwork for this series, but Marcos Martin and Alvaro Lopez do an admirable job. Their work is very similar to Steve Rude's on the Worlds Finest miniseries, and is reminiscent of both Robin: Year One and the Batman animated series, which makes for a great complement to the type of story Beatty and Dixon provided.
Overall, Batgirl: Year One was an enjoyable look back at a classic character that, for obvious reasons (and if you haven't read the Killing Joke, you need to do that now) doesn't get much attention. The creators involved have crafted a fun and exciting adventure that is a perfect match to the nature of the character.
Batgirl the spunky.......2005-03-26
I have always been a fan of the Batman universe. And, me being a girl with a fondness for amazing redheaded heroines, Batgirl was an obvious ultra-heroine.
Batgirl Year One is like the Holy Grail of graphic novels. It has wonderful art paired with amazing writing and a favorite character just being generally awesome throughout.
I'm told (but can't confirm) that it's the best out of the "Year One" books, but I can say that if you like Batgirl and don't pick it up, you'll regret it!
"Batgirl" soars!.......2004-12-16
"Batgirl: Year One," by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon, is a nine-chapter comic book about Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police officer James Gordon. The book tells the story of how this young woman becomes the masked and costumed crimefighter known as Batgirl.
I've loved the character of Batgirl since seeing Yvonne Craig's spirited portrayal of her in the 1960s TV show "Batman." Beatty and Dixon's version is likewise a great Batgirl. Although Batgirl is part of America's venerable superhero tradition, she is in her own way one of the most down-to-earth and accessible of these characters: she has no fantastic "superpowers" and is not a millionaire; as dramatized in this book, she builds her superhero persona from the ground up, with sweat and brains.
This story shows Batgirl/Barbara's dealings with her dad, with fellow crimefighters Batman and Robin, and with the villains Killer Moth and Firefly. The story is rich in action, humor, and interpersonal drama. There are nice down-to-earth moments, such as details of Batgirl creating her costume and assembling her hero gear. Along the way the artists and writers enhance the story with clever touches and thoughtful details which really help immerse the reader in Batgirl's world.
Batgirl is a feisty, courageous, and very human character--she's a heroine I could really cheer for. Ultimately I found this book as genuinely inspiring as it is entertaining. Believe in Batgirl!

A review for the mature and light-hearted.......2006-12-12
First of all, anyone who would take this seriously and have the grace to complain about it over the internet is not very intelligent. Also, can't you people find a sense of humor? Did the doctor remove it? Sure, Savetoby may be "illegal" or a "scam" but who was dumb enough to fall for it? The immature people who are taking the time to bash it. Grow up. I personally think it's hilarious and enjoy suspending my disbelief that one day indeed these monsterous human beings will cook that sweet innocent bunny rabbit, unless someone has the good grace to donate. You know, life is supposed to be funny, sometimes.
DONT BUY IT.......2006-04-09
I read a bit of my friend's. This book is terrible. They are scamming everyone with that dumb idea. Don't buy it.
ILLEGAL SCAM!!! .......2006-04-04
Yes, we are all aware that savetoby is a scam, and for those who are not aware, well, they are all superior morons. BUT did you know that savetoby is illegal? On an urban legend site i found that someone who went there saw a little disclaimer that said this was alllll a joke! Plus, on the urban legends site, the savetoby thing was all listed as false. Want to hear the illegal part? If you look on savetoby.com, there's a section reguarding this legal stuff. In it, the superior moron king who created savetoby.com says the site is NOT fraud and claims it's all to real. Plus the bunny was never ever eaten, so does that count as false advertising...? that's a double lawsuit!
well this concludes my lenthy reveiw. Hope you belive me. You can check out MY site: [...] hopefully I'll post a copy of this review there later on. (by the way the book [...]) see ya'll! Bye!
Funny thing is, they won't see a dime of my money even after I got the book........2006-03-22
I got the book somone else who isn't affiliated with the SaveToby website in any way, so they pretty much won't see a dime of my money at all.
And even if they did, a buck seriously doesn't go a long way. Not the way they're operating anyway. Anyway, as far as a book goes, it can be hilarious at times and poorly written (depending on what pages you're reading). As a deliberate scam/hoax, its a hoot to read. It's even more satisfying to know I got it much cheaper than the price they were asking for.
Toby is a cute little guy, but seriously...they ain't gonna kill the rabbit. It's common sense, they want money. If they kill the rabbit, they won't get anymore money. Plus who cares if the rabbit dies? Seriously? It's not your rabbit, it's not anyone else's rabbit. They probably just bought it from a store and just made it all up from there in the book (which makes it a pretty good ficitonal reading piece...even though its painfully obvious these guys can't write, or the people they hired to write it probably have at most, a High School degree in writing). But because of the fact they can't even tell a story properly all the time, it just makes the book even more hilarious.
All in all, like said in one of the reviews here, he'll probably just die of old age anyway. And even then, they'll just replace him with another rabbit (its not that hard as you may think). And if they make more books like this, i'll keep scaming them in turn until I find a way to get any newer books they might make for free (cause really, its an entertaining read for a rainy day).
The book features pictures of the cute lil' guy, a Toby blog featuring Toby hypnotizing readers to buy more books or he'll face his impending "death" sentence, the more interesting Origin of Toby sections (where they explain time and time again their evolution of the internet hoax that is SaveToby and also have a fictional backdrop on how the actual scam started, major props to the person who did the Brian perspective of the story...it's the most hilarious part in the entire book!), fake reasons (of course) on why they need the money, Hate Mail, and a Panel Discussion that pits a fictional Animal Activist against a ficiontional Philosophical teacher, also including a random annoying fictional frat boy and a fictional starving character affectionately known as Somali (oh yea, there is this guy called the Moderator, but there's nothing noteworthy they put in his dialouge). They also, in the Panel Discussion section and afterwards, take a few hits against the PETA (though at the same time, a few their own assertions which are represented through the Phil Teacher are actually a few self-induced hits themselves, so no one wins).
Near the end, you're treated to these wonderful looking recipes on what they're supposedly gonna use on poor lil' Toby! Oh no! Makes for a tastey snack though, makes me wanna cook up my own rabbit and use any one of the suggested recipes (i'm craving for a bit of Tobyswick Stew, myself...or a Curried Toby). But wait, there's alot more in the book that I haven't even
mentioned yet. One last section I will get into is the "How to create your own Scam" and the "Copycat" sections, which are a real interesting read and in fact make the whole thing even more obvious what this is about (for those who didn't get it the first time). There's more, but only you have the power to find out!...or not, which can be a better alternative if you have better things to do.
So all in all, its overall a very entertaining book. A great piece of fiction, with some hilarious things in it and a great selection of recipies in the back! Coupled with the very low price I got it for and I say its overall a solid book. It's a shame its all just that: fiction. Otherwise this book would've been more entertaining to read.
it's scammerific.......2006-02-28
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/savetoby.asp
It's an obvious scam, and he's made some money off it, but not a lot since PayPal locked up his account a long time ago. This book is just another ploy to make some money. Support the scam, or do some real rabbits some real justice by supporting your local humane society. Eventually, the rabbit will die of natural causes. He's brilliant for taking advantage of the stupidity of everyone who actually gives him money for this site/cause.
Book Description
Experimental Cinema, The Film Reader brings together key writings on American avant-garde cinema to explore the long tradition of underground filmmaking from its origins in the 1920s to the work of contemporary film and video artists. The Reader traces the development of major movements such as the New American Cinema of the 1960s and the Structuralist films of the 1970s, examining the work of key practitioners and recovering neglected filmmakers. Contributors focus on the ways in which underground films have explored issues of gender, sexuality and race, and foreground important technical innovations such as the use of Super 8mm and video. Each section features an editor's introduction setting debates in their context. The book concludes with a valuable filmography of key films available.
Book Description
This is the first major collection of criticism on Black American cinema. From the pioneering work of Oscar Micheaux and Wallace Thurman to the Hollywood success of Spike Lee, Black American filmmakers have played a remarkable role in the development of the American film, both independent and mainstream.
In this volume, the work of early Black filmmakers is given serious attention for the first time. Individual essays consider what a Black film tradition might be, the relation between Black American filmmakers and filmmakers from the diaspora, the nature of Black film aesthetics, the artist's place within the community, and the representation of a Black imaginary.
Black American Cinema also uncovers the construction of Black sexuality on screen, the role of Black women in independent cinema, and the specific question of Black female spectatorship. A lively and provocative group of essays debate the place and significance of Spike Lee
Of crucial importance are the ways in which the essays analyze those Black directors who worked for Hollywood and whose films are simplistically dismissed as sell-outs, to the Hollywood "master narrative," as well as those "crossover" filmmakers whose achievements entail a surreptitious infiltration of the studios.
Black American Cinema demonstrates the wealth of the Black contribution to American film and the complex course that contribution has taken.
Contributors: Houston Baker, Jr., Toni Cade Bambara, Amiri Baraka, Jacquie Bobo, Richard Dyer, Jane Gaines, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Ron Green, Ed Guerrero, bell hooks, Phyllis Klotman, Ntongele Masilela, Clyde Taylor, and Michele Wallace.

A good anthology on Black Film.......2000-12-25
From the early pioneers of Black Film like Oscar Micheaux in the 1930's to the present day era of filmmakers including Spike Lee, this book adequately covers it all, with a fair amount of time devoted on independent cinema. Interesting read. Especially useful for the academic world.
Book Description
This collection covers a range of topics in 20th century cinema, from the Auteur Theory to the commercial cinema from Orson Welles to Kenneth Anger.

Lovely and Different.......2006-06-20
The artwork for this set if beautiful, and it also has some of the finest packaging I've seen for a normally priced tarot set. (Rather than high-priced collectables.)
I think that the retitling of the cards gives them a great deal of freedom with the selection of appropriate images for each of the Majors.
I like this deck, but I could do with just a bit more analysis of each card; yes, I'm an intermediate reader who likes their hand held a little bit.
Classic Love Stories and Myths Provide Basis for this Lovely Tarot Deck.......2006-02-16
After purchasing this deck to help a friend tool out her relationship difficulty, I quickly became mesmerized by not only the beautiful artwork depicted on each of the "Lover's Path Tarot", but the extremely satisfying manner in which creator Kris Waldherr has interspersed important legendary love stories from history, myth and literature with important emotional markers to mirror our own inner relationships to underline and further illuminate the Tarot's traditional archetypical connotation.
Each of the 22 Major Arcana represents a famous pair of lovers. Instead of the usual tarot name of the card, the actual emotion corresponding to the traditional tarot symbolism or story of progressive life lessons simplifies and at the same time helps one to remember the actual meaning of the card by remembering the moral of the story signified by the featured couple. For example, Major Arcana card number XIII Death, usually perceived as a frightening card in a reading, is denoted in this deck as the emotion Transformation and embodied by the relationship between Persephone and the god of the Underworld Pluto, The significance of something having to die in order for change to occur becomes poignantly realistic while recalling that Persephone had to allow herself to transform through her 6 months in Hades with Pluto in order to be reborn each Spring. Equally compelling is Waldherr's number XXI World card. Entitled "Triumph" it utilizes the story of Ariadne and Dionysus to elucidate the meaning of the card. Ariadne, abandoned by Theseus after helping him through the Labyrinth, finds greater fulfillment with the god of wine on Naxos. One truly gets the feeling of expansion, hope and a triumph over difficulties that the traditional card represents.
Waldherr's treatment of the 56 minor Arcana cards greatly aids the reader to a more significant understanding and recognition of the meanings behind the appearance of these cards in a reading. Each of the 14 cards in each distinct suit (here, cups represent cups, staves represent rods, arrows represent swords and coins represent pentacles) is used to milestone events in four major stories affiliated with four of the Major Arcana cards. The cups suit (water) details the story of Tristan and Isolde, two lovers definitely influenced by the cups suit traditional theme of a strong emotive influence---Desire. Each beautifully rendered depiction helps the reader to remember the part of the story that the card traditionally and archetypically characterizes. Knowing the story allows the reader to respond to the emotions evoked and to put together a mini-story that facilitates superior spiritual and emotional insight. The Stave ( Rod-fire) suit retells the action story of Sigfried and Brunnhilde--Strength. The story of Cupid and Psyche -- Awakening (the Sun) brings the intellect suit of Arrows (Swords- air) to life while demystisizing some of this suits bleaker cards. The love between Danae and Zeus (Fortune- Wheel of Fortune) exemplifies the suit of Coins (Pentacles - Earth) where the best the world can offer is shown to transform one's life.
In addition to full page and color representations of all 78 cards, the author provides a chapter in the acoompanying book where she explores different spreads designed specifically for particular queries. An addendum completes the author's text, offering a quick, easy-to-read table of both the major Arcana, complete with small photos of each card for easy remembrance and cross-reference, major themes and the paired lovers. Resources are made available for those who want to further their reading about the included paired lovers or about tarot in general.
Bottom line: This exquisite deck adds dimension to the usual Rider-Waite Smith symbolism which still lurks at the heart of each of the cards. The use of the paired lovers not only provides extra visual splendor, but enhances one's initial response to each of the cards in a reading. Well done, Ms Waldherr! Recommended to all those interested in newer Tarot decks that will link famous love relationships with our own thrust for inner growth.
A Wonderful Tarot Deck.......2006-01-31
this is an amazing tarot deck, i recomend it to anyone who is serious about it. not only is it acurate it is a beautiful tarot deck. wonderful deck.
If you thought you were going to like it, still you'll be surprised........2005-11-24
As soon as I received the Lover's Path Set I knew I had done the right thing. I expected an high quality product, but I hadn't imagined it would be so sumptuous. The elegant burgundy box has a Velcro strap closure and encloses the card reference book: a glossy, all-colour companion which will explain the tale behind each card, along with the used symbolism, the common meaning, and the omnipresent keywords. A section of the book features 7 spreads to use with the deck and a quick card reference guide. Sealed with a wine ribbon is the spread scroll, which contains the spreads you find also in the book. After drooled over the book and accessories, let's take a look to the cards. The size is a little wider than usual tarot (about 3½" by 4¾") and they are printed in a good matte stock. The rich frame around the picture carries again burgundy and gold tones, and the very drawings follow a Pre-Raphaelite style, which I'm absolutely crazy about. Historical, literary, and legendary couples are portrait in the cards, loosely playing according a Rider-Waite script. Unless you have a solid and varied knowledge of myth and literature (and even so), you surely will take good advantage from reading the companion book. This will help beginners to restore their Rider-Waite references, and will be also useful to expert readers for understanding the feeling of this deck and consulting it for love and relationship matters. If you are a collector, instead, you surely don't want to miss this piece of art, which is a real feast for your eyes.
This is one of those times when it is mandatory to buy the boxset.
Another Winner from Waldherr.......2005-09-20
I've been a fan of Waldherr since The Book of Goddesses, have all of her books and several of her prints, and eagerly awaited this deck though I did not believe I could possibly appreciate it as much as her Goddess Tarot. I was wrong; the artwork is gorgeous, the interpretation of the traditional images/archetypes is fresh and thought-provoking without straying too far to be recognizable, and the package is beautifully put together.
Book Description
This is the 2007 Edition of the first book in the "Practical Guide" series for the mortgage industry.
Published since 1992, and updated annually, this 198 page textbook was written as an answer to the "sink-or-swim" training methods of many mortgage firms. The format is designed to give the newly initiated loan officer/agent, lender, processor, or other initiate the practical information they need to do the loan officer's job.
The reader learns how to understand rate and point quotes, how to use a financial calculator, how to make basic computations customers require, how to understand loan programs and compare product features. The student progresses through understanding loan specifications - Conventional Conforming, Jumbo, FHA/VA and Sub-Prime program guidelines - to a practical understanding of ratios, income, assets and closing costs, debts and credit history. This is then placed in the context of the loan application - how to collect all the required documents and disclosures and supervise a loan from application to closing. Customer Reviews:
Great book, but . . . ........2007-05-26
This is a great book and needs to be in your library if you are, or are considering a career in the mortgage industry. But, Mr. Morgan needs to do a better job of describing what is in the tables used as examples. It becomes confusing when looking at a box with numbers in it and little or no quantification of the rows or columns. If this book is truly a "guide to residential finance" then more examples are needed and perhaps some excises with answers, kind of like a text book. Even though this book has been around for several years, a few modifications could make it a well rounded text and an industry standard.
One of the best!.......2007-01-23
If you're new to the mortgage business, then I highly recommend buying this book. It's very detailed and contains all of the practical info that you need to get a start in the mortgage industry.
Other than that, at times it becomes confusing due to a few editing errors.
The Loan Officer's Practical Guide to Residential Finance.......2007-01-05
This is a text book for all loan officers. It is a must read for everyone interested in mortgages. The book is easy to understand and gives all the information in one place. This book will teach you everything you need to know about mortgages. Maximize your knowledge.
Great Info...Poor Editing.......2006-10-24
I agree with many of the previous posters as to the value of the information contained in this book....it is excellent. That being said, the book is evidently updated annually and the author does a VERY poor job of editing from one edition to the next. I believe this to be part of the reason a previous poster found the text to be confusing at times. In addition to typographical errors, there are errors in the page locations of certain topics, and errors with some tables as well.
That being said, I still highly recommend this book. It is not one to be read only, but to be worked through with paper, pencil, and calculator.
Good guide, but can be confusing sometimes.......2005-09-26
This is a good book. It is crammed with lots of information that is specific to the loan industry. It is a comprehensive guide covering most of the aspects of the loan industry. I turn to this guide every now and then to check up on problems and questions that I run into with my loans.
Only problem is that it could be written more clearly. It's difficult to decipher some of the figures and tables because the author doesn't explain them enough beforehand. Also he uses some jargon and other terms that might not be familiar to a new loan officer.
Overall, a good guide with lots of specific, useful information. Drawback is some parts and concepts are not clearly explained. I would still recommend to buy it though as its faults are not overwhelming.
