This is an unbelievable price for a book so full of high-quality black-and-white and color plates. Not much text, but an excellent source of patterns for very appealing american folk-art motifs.

                    Book Description

Kimono is a generic term for traditional Japanese clothing; it means thing to wear. This book provides an overview of some traditional garments, introduces types of designs found in twentieth century kimono that are still available, and presents wearable art inspired by kimono from contemporary artists. The text gives price ranges for items that would be reasonable in a store or gallery, and explains what to look for when collecting. As kimono disappear from Japanese wardrobes, they are becoming increasingly collectible. Each of the fourteen chapters opens with the definition of the type of apparel covered therein (including simple, everyday, formal, etc.) as well as their use in Japanese life. The terms are further explained in the Glossary. Over 525 color photographs display brilliant and subtle textile designs and demonstrate beauty in mens, womens, and childrens garments and accessories. Textile and clothing designers will find a wealth of inspiration here. Vintage clothing enthusiasts will be enthralled.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for the new kimono collector.......2007-01-04

This was my first book on the subject of kimono . It is great for the new kimono fan and an invaluable inventory for 20th century kimono. Great photos and good content. Not an encyclopedia (never was intended to be) but a great primer! Nice people too! I look with interest to their next book!

As a 25-year kimono/textile collector and enthusiast of Japanese traditional culture (not to mention former vintage dealer), I give this book both stars for the gorgeous photos.

The book content, alas, is a mess. First off, I doubt it was edited. There are numerous typos and spelling errors (e.g. "Japanes"), grammatical mistakes, and captions that will tell you to look at something that's not in the photo! (What green kumihimo tie? No ties were shown!)

An editor needs to clean up the author's writing, as some sentences make no sense, and grammar mistakes are rife. I was reminded of the "junior high essay bloopers" that make the rounds. I'm not sure if it's fuzzy thinking or just bad writing, but the author also seems to confuse colors, techniques, and fabrics, as I found several sentences that were the moral equivalent of saying "Growing on trees, green apples are a kind of pie." (An example: "Lined entirely in white with accents at hem and sleeves of flowing sage green called bokashi." [sic] Would you know that bokashi is a technique, not a color?) At one point, tsumugi is identified as a kind of ikat(!). There are also numerous misidentifications, the most obvious one (to me) being a characteristically early Meiji kimono being identified as Taisho era (~60 years apart). No rationale is given for assigning dates (for example, design elements, placement, fabrics, techniques, linings, etc., are valuable clues in dating a kimono). There are also context statements presented without justification (i.e. "may have belonged to a geisha/been a wedding kimono" etc.). The most baffling was a 1920's wedding kimono that said "Probably a rental." Since rental wedding kimono are a post-WWII phenomena, why would you conclude a 1920's kimono was a rental? As for the value figures, pricing is either artifically inflated (some price guides do this in an attempt to jack up the market) or heavily regional to Washington D.C. On the West Coast, full retail would be half or a quarter of what is listed. Kimono shows/sales would be much, much less. EBay auctions would be a fraction. The bibliography is also very short and fluffy, mostly focusing on kimono as art and actual wearing, with "When Art Became Fashion" (L.A. County Museum of Art) as the sole historic source.

It's a gorgeous book, but deserved to be better written and edited, not to mention researched.

1 out of 5 stars Big on photos, thin on useful info.......2001-07-03

What I had hoped would be an invaluable resource for a collector turned out to be a coffee table book with lots of nice pictures and not much more. Descriptions such as "may be wool or silk" and "possibly Taisho" indicate that more research might have served readers well. Since many of the photos are from the private collection of the authors, who claim to be the country's largest supplier of vintage kimono, it reads more like a catelogue of their inventory than a resource book. As I said - if you're looking for more "books for looks," this is it. Serious collectors need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for kimono collectors.......2001-06-13

Lavished with full-color photographs throughout to show examples of colors and styles of kimono textiles. Hundreds of photos! It fully explains fabrics, periods, etc and includes a glossary of terms. I'm a beginner kimono collector, and this is a very useful book for my needs.

The authors included suggested prices to pay for kimono -- an incredible asset! Book was published in 2001, so pricing is relatively current. People have also suggested The Book of Kimono to me, but I passed in favor of this book, because I'd rather have current info including the pricing.

I'd like to address one comment in the "official review" above. The writer said: "The authors don't cite sources for the information they provide, and it appears that much of it is anecdotal, gleaned from working within the industry. Although the images are appealing, the lack of authority for the information provided makes this a marginal purchase." I disagree!! The authors are merchants actively involved in buying, selling and collecting kimono. What more of an authority on collecting could you find than that? Having spent 5 years in grad school myself, I have respect for academics, but the quote above seems to imply that this book is less valuable if it's not grounded with academic authority. I don't think academic authority is necessary; indeed, this book is more valuable without it for the purpose it was written to serve. Don't let that stop you from getting this book.

                    Book Description

A hugely important release any year, but a timely one this election year!

With laser-like insight and rapier-sharp wit, the political cartoonist is alive and kicking in the 21st Century. Here 150 members of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, whose work has appeared in every major newspaper in North America and beyond, join in this celebration of the art form. The cartoonists collected here have won hundreds of journalism awards, including a dozen Pulitzer Prizes. More importantly, they do not suffer fools lightly - in politics, religion or culture - and are always the first to step forward to shout "The Emperor has no clothes!" With an introduction by Senator Russ Feingold.

Just a few of the cartoonists contained within these pages (including more than a DOZEN Pulitzer Prize-winners) are:

                    Mike Luckovich
                    David Horsey

5 out of 5 stars Be the response an "ah" of agreement or an "argh" of disgust...........2005-09-22

Inorder to review the history of political cartoons before examining this book, I surfed the Web and came upon a site which shares a wealth of information: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~MA96/PUCK/part1.html. I now presume to suggest that this brief history be read first. (Some may find sufficient background information in Lucy Shelton Caswell's even shorter Introduction to this volume.) Credit J.P. Trostle with the selection and editing of the material which focuses on representative work by almost 150 political cartoonists, introduced in alphabetical order. Together, they do indeed offer a wealth of illustrated "insights & assaults from today's editorial pages."

Of course, our exposure to political cartoons is limited by the number of daily newspapers and weekly news magazines we read. For that reason, I especially appreciate seeing the works of cartoonists of whom I was previously unaware. That is one of the greatest benefits this volume offers. I also appreciate the wide range of perspectives on the most prominent public figures. As Caswell correctly notes, almost all of the selections will elicit one of two responses: an "ah" of agreement or "argh" of disgust. For various reasons, political cartoons have an immediate, often compelling impact which Op Ed articles, for example, seldom have. They often seem to me to be the visual equivalent of a sound bite. The most compelling measure up to standards which Pat Oliphant set for himself years ago:

To create "a graphic distillation of the personality of the strutting popinjay on last night's news. [His audience] wants a visual rendering of immediacy and endurance that can be cut from the printed page and saved on the refrigerator, or if disliked, can be ripped from the page, have rude recommendations scrawled upon it, and mailed back to the artist. Such people, pro and con, possess awareness and opinion, and as such are to be blessed." High standards indeed. Judge for yourself which of the cartoonists' works included in this volume measure up to them.

One final point. Whatever the political loyalties and inclinations may be, it seems imperative to me that those in the news media should do all they can to accommodate a wide and deep diversity of opinion. Many eminently qualified persons have refused to become involved in the political process because it is too often polarized and mean-spirited. (Colin Powell is only one of several such persons who come to mind.) On an admittedly personal note, I conclude with the hope that we follow Voltaire's suggestion: cherish those who seek the truth but beware of those who find it. That is as relevant to elected officials as it is to cartoonists who portray them with caricatures such as those presented in this lively, entertaing volume.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers For The Cartoonists.......2004-10-11

"Attack Of The Political Cartoonists" doesn't disappoint. There are cartoons to satisfy every reader. With precision and skill the 150 cartoonists who contributed to this work hit their mark every time. Fun to read, fun to look at and fun to share. Three cheers for the cartoonists. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and Insight for Future Generations.......2004-09-29

Political Cartoons reflect the political attitudes of the period. The book is funny, insightful, and fresh. It has a wide variety of issues and will surely be a keeper in my personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Better compendium than most!.......2004-09-11

I was pleased to see cartoonists that I loved as a child mixed in with those who I knew from college as well as those who I'd otherwise never see. Several cartoonists had me laughing out loud; others made me bristle, but the diversity of viewpoints provides something for people of every political stripe in these politically ludicrous times.

Thanks to my torturous childhood years filled with verbal abuse and belittlement from my fellow middle school students, I read up on a lot of George Heyduke's "Dirty Tricks" books, and fantasized about taking my righteous vengeance on my tormentors. Only problem was, most of the revenge tactics and practical jokes in Heyduke's tomes were a bit too elaborate, and involved monetary expenditures well beyond my meager $2-a-week allowance. And don't get me started on the caustic substances I wasn't old enough to purchase at the time...

Sadly, I never encountered Mr. Geste's guide to practical jokes during those nightmarish days of adolescence. It features a wonderful array of more basic, meat-and-potatoes practical jokes that aren't a pain to set up, yet are hilariously effective. Aand most of `em are perfect for the dirty trickster on a budget. Admittedly, a few of the gags in the book are rather quaint and hackneyed by today's standards (e.g. possible outcomes of the the tried-and-true (or is it?) flaming-bag-of-dog-doo-ring-and-run scenario (pp. 28-30), and the classic "Prince-Albert-in-a-Can" prank call(p. 33)). Fortunately, they're heavily outweighed by the more innovative goofs that fill up the vast majority of the tome's 144 pages. From keeping a can of soup handy for pulling a Linda Blair maneuver (page 69, and as seen in "Porky's II") to the fire extinguisher "exhibit" trick at the local art museum (pp 126-128) to the lo-cal qualities of shaving cream (p. 20), there are a lotta great ideas you can use this April Fool's to have a little fun at the expense of others.

This book also covers more than a few elaborate and expensive goofs. The "Floor Plan" prank outlined on pages 137 to 141 is one I'd like to attempt one day, should I ever get several people to go along with me. And the ol' stack-of-tires-over-the-flagpole gag (p. 44) is interesting, although it is highly improbable for someone to pull off without getting caught in the act.

My personal recommendation: get a few buddies together for a game of charades, and try the trick on pages 40 to 42 ("Yes, No, Maybe"). I can just imagine the target's head exploding in frustration over this goof...

I remember stumbling onto this book while walking through Barnes and Noble, and I immediately got it. It is the coolest book ever in regards to Doctor Who, all sorts of information and tidbits that most people never knew is included along with various other details and analyses about the adventures that have been shown during the show's long history on television.

if you are a fan of Doctor, get this book. you'll love it. it may even help inspire you to write your own reviews for some of your favorite and not so favorite Doctor Who adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Doctor Who episode guide.......2003-12-17

If you're looking for a 'Doctor Who' episode guide, then you can stop looking as this is by far the best book you can buy about the television series. It's a revised and updated version of the book that was previously released as an official volume from BBC Books some years ago. It contains a synopsis of each story as well as interesting behind-the-scenes details and viewer/fan reaction and opinion. The latter is my favourite part as I find episode guides that steer clear of including opinions of stories to be as dry and boring as dust.

This updated volume also covers appearances of the Doctor and friends on television outside of the series proper, including the K-9 spin-off pilot 'K-9 And Company' and charity specials such as the very entertaining 'The Curse Of Fatal Death' which starred Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley as the Doctor. The coverage for these stories isn't as in-depth as the television series, but it's good to see them featured in this book.

This is an essential purchase for any Doctor Who fan. For coverage of the spin-off books and audio stories, you can also find Lars Pearson's 'I, Who' series elsewhere on Amazon.

i think this book is a masterpiece for a guitar player who is experienced and want to play the biggest rock hits of the 70's..the book is perfect and easy to understand for an experienced guitar player..but if you play guitar just for fun and don't know much about notes, musical theories and such that, you can't understand this book... But I think the missing side of the book is it's content. There are only five songs. I have "the bonjovi rock score" and the same problem exists on that book.I think the content is very poor for such useful books.

In this instructive and entertaining book, James Plaskett, very much renowned for his attacking prowess over the chessboard, presents readers with all the necessary skills and belief to launch successful offensives against unwary opponents. Using illustrative games, Plaskett reveals how to convert all types of advantages, such as a lead in development, a better pawn structure or a safer king, into fully blown attacks. Read this book and you will be able to attack with confidence!

                        2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2005-03-09

This book was a big disappointment in that it provides almost no general principles of, or clear guidance for setting up and executing attacks. It is left to the reader to develop and understand attacking concepts from a series of examples from Plaskett's own games. These games often provide good examples of an attacking motif but without meaningful statements distilling the essence of the concepts being displayed I found it difficult to learn from them. Many comments are simplistic, e.g. "In any attack we must always also consider the safety of our own king," others are rather obtuse, e.g. "When executing an attack be wary of fantastic finishes." Since I paid for the book I read all of it, but I felt it was mostly a watse of time.
