Book Description
Coming on the heels of the New York Times best-selling PEANUTS: A GOLDEN CELEBRATION, this is the 40th anniversary deluxe edition of America’s most popular TV Christmas special, featuring never-before-published original (digitized) animation art, the complete script, the behind-the-scenes making of the cartoon, and Vince Guaraldi’s original score and production notes.
Customer Reviews:
Christmas time is here... happiness and cheer..........2006-12-11
"Charlie Brown Christmas" is the crown jewel of Christmas specials. Heavy on holiday introspection, but with the dry wit and humor you'd come to expect from Charles Schulz's creations.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition" just expands that experience, by outlining how the famed special came to be -- the music, the animation, the voice acting, even the advertisement to get people to watch it. It's a charming, nostalgic little book, and a good accompaniment.
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" was spun up quickly, when Coca Cola wanted a Christmas special in less than a week -- and Charles Schulz's lovable loser Charlie Brown seemed to be the ticket. But the special was made very differently from other cartoons -- 2-D animation, no laugh track, uncutesy kids, and (horrors!) a jazz soundtrack. It was doomed to fail, they said.
Well, instead it became a booming hit, and has been running every December ever since. Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez reminisce in here about the much-loved Charles Schulz, and about Vince Guaraldi, who made the distinctive piano soundtrack, and why it's so beloved -- it dares to approach holiday ennui and commercialization, then dashes it away with Linus' description of Christmas' meaning.
As for the "making of" portion, there are storyboards, musical scores, test photos, clips of television reviews, and rare photos like Melendez and Schulz doing the football gag. Finally, there is the entire script of the special, framed by colourful stills from the cartoon.
You couldn't wring this much information from most half-hour animated specials, no matter how much fun they were. But it's a bit different with "Charlie Brown Christmas." It was so completely unusual -- and has proved to be so timeless -- that a book on the making of it, and its effect, seems completely right.
It's a very conversational, reminiscent book. It feels like sitting in a room with Melendez and Mendelson, listening to them reminisce about "Sparky." And we also get input from other people involved in the project, such as Christopher Shea (Linus), who talks about his famous "Second Chapter of Luke" speech, as well as odd bits of trivia (the little girl playing Sally had to be fed her lines).
The Christmas special is more than able to stand on its own, but "Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition" is a wonderful accompaniment. Full of interesting tidbits and history.
What's not to love ?.......2006-12-04
This is the ultimate companion to the tv show. The art work is from the original show and the dialogue is a great bonus! The book is also packed with great trivia and information about the decisions "behind stage" that led to the creation of the ultimate Christmas Special.
Here comes Charlie Brown, that round-headed prophet.......2004-10-05
The world's most recognized cartoon character, ever in in our national consciousness, comes alive periodically on TV specials, movies, ads, but never more so during the season of Christmas. He stands before us as the plucky everyman to remind us of the most important message in Chrismas, that a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger invites us to visit and worship Him.
The background story of how it all came about is as entertaining and instructive as the show itself. The man who turned Charlie Brown and his friends into moving figures, Bill Melendez, says, "This little story and the way it's told is almost as simple and direct as Sparky's cartoon strip. The message is so gentle, there's nothing pompous about the story."
He recalls, "When I first looked at that part of the story, I told Sparky, 'We can't do this. It's too religious.' And he said to Bill , 'if we don't do it, who else can? We're the only ones who can do it.'"
A grateful nation watches it again and again. May the message sink in.
One of TVýs worthwhile traditions-Revisited.......2004-06-09
Lee Mendelson , one of the men behind all of the Peanuts cartoons, has created a tribute book for one of the most watched and appreciated Christmas specials. Inside you'll find the history of the cartoon, from its humble beginnings as an idea put forth by Coca-Cola looking for a Christmas special, to the inspired use of Vince Guaraldi's wonderful jazz, and the casting of "real" children as the voices, A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS proved to be a series of fortuitous events. This is an enjoyable keepsake for fans of the show, but there is some obvious padding, I mean, 90 pages of illustrated script? The book is only 192 pages long. There are other extras, like the production sheets and Melendez's original backgrounds. They are welcome sights and it would have been nice to see more effort put into details like these. That being said I enjoyed the book, but would only recommend it if you get a break on the retail price.
Invaluable to the Peanuts fan.......2002-10-23
I have wondered, sometimes, what it would be like to go through a Christmas without knowing the wonderful, brilliant cartoon "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was going to be on the air. I've never lived in such a world, nor do I think I would want to.
This book is a look into the process of making what is inarguably one of the most-loved Holiday specials ever. Everything about the cartoon is in here -- from the journey to get it on the air to the dangerously abbreviated production time to the perils of casting real children to play the Peanuts gang -- the first time children played children in American animation, by the way, and some of them were too young to even read their lines.
And of course, the piece de resistance, the book includes the complete screenplay, written by the brilliant Charles M. Schulz himself. A sweet, humble man, I doubt he really knew at the time how wonderful his creation was or how important it would become to so many.
This is a fabulous book and seems to be designed as a companion to "Peanuts: A Golden Celebration," which was released a few years ago. Both of them are simply invaluable for anyone who loves Peanuts.
Book Description
"On the lawns and porches, and in the living rooms and backyards of my threescore years, there have been more dogs, written and drawn, real and imaginary, than I had guessed before I started this roundup."
Here is James Thurber, arguably the greatest humorist of the twentieth century, on all things canine. In The Dog Department, Michael J. Rosen, a literary dogcatcher of sorts, has gathered together Thurber's best in show. Here we have the stylish prose and drawings from Thurber's Dogs (which connected the words "Thurber" and "Dog" as inseparably as "Bartlett" and "Quotation," as "Emily Post" and "Etiquette"), along with unpublished material from the Thurber archives, a great sheaf of uncollected cartoons, and two dozen "Talk of the Town" miniatures from The New Yorker — the consummate dog book from an artist of extraordinary pedigree. What other author can claim to have penned his own personal breed? The Thurber hound is a creature as unmistakable as Disney's mouse or Playboy's bunny.
In The Dog Department you'll find standard poodles, Scottish terriers, an Airedale, a rough collie, an American Staffordshire terrier — all Thurber family members who inspired quintessential dog tales. For instance, there's Muggs, "the dog that bit people," an avocation that, each year, required Thurber's mother to send her famous chocolates to an ever-growing list of Muggs's victims. There's also a fair share about bloodhounds, German shepherd dogs, and pugs. But what you'll find remarkable and comforting is that reading Thurber from fifty or even seventy-five years ago is akin to reading about dogs today — or about dogs from the previous century, as Thurber grew up reading — or about dogs, we hope, from this new century we've just entered. The Dog Department is proof that Thurber's work defines the canine canon.

This book contains one of the great dog stories of all time: THE DOG WHO BIT PEOPLE....... Scratch that ...... This book contains one of the great stories -- period -- of all time, THE DOG WHO BIT PEOPLE. Once you have read this story you will remember it forever. Isn't that the definition of a "great" story?

Finally, a comprehensive guide covering the entire span of Jamaican music, from the 1950s mento and R&B through dub, dancehall and ragga. Along with interviews of crucial reggae personalities (Bunny Lee, King Jammy, and Coxsone Dodd, for example) and profiles of major careers (like Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, and of course, Bob Marley), Barrow and Dalton provide the irreplaceable service of reviewing and recommending more than 1,000 CD and vinyl selections. The writers clearly love their topic and are exceedingly knowledgeable about it. The resulting guide is a combination of fascinating historical tidbits, scholarly attention to musical detail, and a definitive treatment of reggae's genre, artists, albums, and songs. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
The Rough Guide to Reggae is the only book of its kind available. The first two editions of the Rough Guide to Reggae were the top-selling books on the subject, and widely acclaimed by the music press and fans alike. Illustrated throughout with over 400 pictures, many of them exclusive photos, the book also features exclusive interviews with reggae's top stars, and reviews over 500 albums. 2003 and 2004 have been the most successful years for reggae music on a global scale since the heyday of Bob Marley, with singers such as Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder regularly topping the UK and US pop charts. The new third edition of Rough Guide to Reggae is fully updated to cover this latest wave of Jamaican musicians, while not stinting on newly discovered recordings and reissues of classic albums of the past.

If you do not understand the difference between Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae, after reading this book, you will........2006-07-30
When one realizes the amount of reggae music one can find today, it can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating to understand let alone comprehend in selecting a good purchase.
Prior to purchasing "The Rough Guide to Reggae" I did not know or understand the difference between Rockstady,Reggae,Roots music and how they differed from each other.
The purchasing of this book was one of the best Reagge purchases i've ever made. Barrow and Dalton give you a chronological order to the music's beginning and its gradual development up to the present.
Novices and experts alike cannot afford to be without this invaluable Reggae guide and indispensible reference book. It's money well spent and you will not be dissapointed.
Wait for 4th edition.......2006-05-26
Great book, one of the best resources, along with allmusic.com. However, if you have the 1st or 2nd edition, there is not enough new here to warrant buying this, wait for 4th edition.
If you don't have any of the editions, which amazon sells all three, this is a great start as are the other two.
Niggling criticism.......2006-04-01
A wonderful book that has introduced my to a lot of good music-- a good guide with some interesting stories spread throughout.
Most of the albums or collections deemed to be essential are truly "must haves".
Now the criticisms:
1
---
The book is organized by genres, or stages of Jamaican music, rather than by artist. So, if you are interestedin finding recordings by one particular artist you may need to thumb through the entire book to find albums recorded during different periods.
For example, recordings by artists like Lee Perry and the Wailing Souls are spread throughout the book. This would not be a problem if the Index was more informative. But the mere mention of an artist (in passing) is sufficient to earn them a spot in the index, rendering it pretty meaningless.
(Boldfacing entries with record reviews would help users better navigate through the book--but I guess that is a criticism of the Rough Guide editors)
2
---
The authors occassionally demonstrate a rather snide attititude towards reggae's "crossover" audience. That is, a non-Jamaican, and presumedly white audience. Sometimes this is expressed as a rather back-handed compliment. For example, Lee Perry is well reviewed, but the authors must add that his admirers come mostly from "crossover" audience.
Elsewhere, they are quite dismissive of Linton Kwesi Johnson for seemingly the same reason. They make some comment about his crossover (ie white) following and dismiss dub poetry in general. And that is too bad, because "Dread Beat and Blood" is an excellent album that deserves more recognitiion.
3
---
Too many of the reissues that I have purchased based on the a reivew in this book have lead me to buy albums in which one of the author's has written the linear notes. On the whole the collections have been quite good, but it does lead me to question their objectivity.
Jesus Dread by Yabby You is excellent collection, but not nearly as great as their review would lead you to think. ;)
All that said, you won't find a better guide.
very helpful reference & buyers guide.......2005-08-12
My parents raised me on roots, but when I wanted to broaden my DUB collection, one of the resources I turned to was the Rough Guide.
Rough Guide is a great go-to reference for the history of different reggae sub-genres and makes a solid buying guide. I've not regretted any music purchases I've made using information from this book. It really helped steer me toward the kinds of music I enjoy and away from things I don't like quite so much, but it also suggested successful adventures I might never have tried otherwise.
One of the best.......2003-02-08
The current Rough Guide covers the genesis of reggae and has a comprehensive discography guide to the music that began as ska and has evolved into the main stream culture of Jamaica and beyound the Jamaican community.
It would be easy to say that the book's crowning glory is it's many pictures both old and new of the many artists that has given the word reggae life and meaning. But the book is much more than that, it's a testament to the works of reggae performing artists and the inspiration behind those artists, the record producers....

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Book!.......2007-08-29
One of the best parts of this book in my opinion are often the resources he lists. He lists websites for me to look at and the blueprint companies for me to Google or learn more from their stock quotes. This book is great for resources so you can do your own research and choose the best path for yourself.
This book is a great buy!!
Blueprint to a Billion.......2007-08-29
Very well researched book and clearly written.
It does show that those that place the customer first and do everything they can to satisfy their customers problems with their products, while watching their own bottom line profits, win out in the end over those that do not.
It also shows how hard it is to keep a competitive advantage and make big profits once a company reaches a billion dollars in revenues. Possible because of increased competition from others for this market segment and from gaining so much market share that it leaves so little room for the company to keep growth at anywhere the same rate.
Too many "duhs" for me.......2007-08-02
Don't read many business non-fiction books. Find them to be too much common sense and move like snails. Well, this was true to form, for me. Felt like the author's points could have been driven home in about 50 pages total, but then, he wouldn't have a saleable product would he? The additional fluff is repetitive and intuitive and did not shed new light on much of anything to me. Try something like "The Long Tail" if you want some new thoughts on business, but then.... that book is not on the same topic.... but close enough for me.
Steroids For Your Business...Exciting and Informative But ONLY For Entrepreneurs With A Vision! .......2007-07-25
Blueprint to a Billion is a phenomenal resource for any entrepreneur that needs a kick...okay, "Rocket Boost" in the right direction. Reviewers here may be over-exposed to this type of information daily - most entrepreneurs out in the "front-lines of business" are not.
If you want to triple your chances of success and put your business on steroids then the author has done just that for you with this book. These blueprint to a billion patterns are priceless.
Excellent Analysis, Elegantly Developed Concepts.......2007-02-18
I've had the pleasure of hearing David speak about this book and the research and concepts he developed for the Blueprint to a Billion. I was struck by the simple yet powerful concepts that David ferretted out of his research. As a business leader I appreciated the enumeration of easily actionable fundamentals that are not readily discernable from everyday observation.
