Book Description
Generally considered the least lively and most bleak of casts, gray is the taint of vagueness and uncertainty. Marking the threshold region where luminous life seems suspended but death has not yet darkened the horizon, it belongs to an evasive and evanescent world, carrying the tint of smoke, fog, ashes, and dust. As the ambiguous space of thought and remembrance where things blend and blur, gray measures the difference between distance and proximity, shading into tinges of hesitation, hues of taciturnity, tones of time past and lost. Thus it may also be the spectral medium of literature itself—that grainy gas of language.
Written with a lead pencil akin to those found in Nabokov, Rilke, Svevo, Poe, and Dickinson, The Gray Book chronicles the vicissitudes of such equivocal articulation—registering the graphite traces it leaves behind but also recording the dwindling span of its life. The book situates itself in a region beyond criticism but this side of literature, characterized by forgetting and finitude, and investigating important yet seemingly inaccessible “gray areas” in texts as old as those of Homer, and as recent as those of Beckett.
Loosely arranging these literary finds according to a revision of the four elements, The Gray Book distances itself from tradition and treats not water but tears, not fire but vapor, not earth but grain, not air but clouds. The narrative thus construed, proceeding in the meandering movements of volatile thought rather than in the prudent steps of a treatise, appears gradually affected by its subject. Themes and facts previously confined to the realm of quoted texts leak into the narrative itself. The border between fiction and fact slowly dissolves as the book approaches the curious void that the author locates at the heart of “gray literature.” Shaped by an omnipresent though increasingly unreliable narrator, The Gray Book may thus ultimately yield a poetics cast in the form of a ghost story.

The Collected Works of Tony Millionaire's Sock Monkey
ASIN: 1560975083 |
Book Description
A new oversized (12" x 7") hardcover collection of one of America's most beloved weekly comic strips. Tony Millionaire's Maakies is one of the most popular weekly comic strips in America, running in over ten of the largest US weekly newspapers, including the New York Press, New Times Los Angeles, and Seattle's The Stranger. Maakies features the comical adventures of a drunken crow on the high seas, blending vaudeville-style humor and a breathtaking line that harkens back to the glory days of the American comic strip. Designed by publishing's foremost graphic designer, Chip Kidd, The House at Maakies Corner features a year's worth of Maakies in a beautiful, deluxe hardcover format that complements the strip's elegant and classical style.
Maakies suggests a contemporary collaboration between E. C. Segar, creator of Popeye, and seafaring novelist Patrick O'Brian (Millionaire is a tremendous fan of both). Millionaire has won multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards and Maakies has appeared as a series of animated segments on NBC's Saturday Night Live.
Customer Reviews:
Twisted Nautically-Flavoured Comedy Ahoy!.......2005-04-28
Take Drinky Crow, a monkey called Uncle Gabby, and a cast of characters straight from the age of vaudeville, put them in the Napoleonic wars and you have Tony Millionaire's newspaper strip, a brilliant, literate and twisted take on history and humour. Rude and erudite, philosophical, completely unique and beautifully drawn (especially the ships.) I'm overdoing the adjectives because it's so hard to quote from. When it comes right down to it, these cartoons are very funny, very original. A whole year's worth of the strip is hardcover bound in a short long book that stays true to the form of the format, giving the only quibble that it's hard to fit on a shelf. A cunning plan to force you to leave it lying around.
Demented and amazing.......2004-08-01
I had to laugh at the reviewer who gave this book one star because it should not be given to a child. Would he give one star to a waffle-iron for the same reason?
Maakies is distinctive for the inspired artwork and the absolutely crazed antics of Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby. Yes, some of the strips are gross to the point of making one choke at reading them, but after you're done choking you will start laughing.
True humor comes from despair.......2003-10-21
In the comics desert of the late 20th century, who could fans of the Great Old Stuff look to? The old heroes are gone: Elsie Segar, Geo. Herriman, Hal Foster. Who even comes close? The only strips that aspire to any kind of artistic expression are either saccharine crud (Mutts) or winky-snarky napkin-doodling (Life in Hell.) Five cheers then for Tony M! Maakies has all the seafaring verve of the old popeye, all the poetic strangeness of Krazy Kat, all the fearsome draughtsmanship of Prince Valiant. The humor? Maakies could only be a fin-de-siecle strip; its gin-soaked angst and violent despair could only get yuks from today's jaded mal-vivants, weaned on Celine and the Brady Bunch. It's not for everybody; only those with the sap necessary to face the maelstrom in the teeth will see its gritty resonance and ludicrous poetry.
Ghastly but Good.......2003-07-10
Tony Millionaire's weekly strip about the raunchy adventures of Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby isn't for kids. Or grandma. Or maybe even for you; a lot of people will be terribly offended by the violence, sexism, and depiction of drunk, frequently suicidal animals.
But to heck with them! In small doses "Maakies" is great fun.
_The House on Maakies Corner_ hardcover is beautifully produced. The extra-wide, one-strip-per-page format shows off Millionaire's considerable talents better than the previous collection.
Alas, this also means that there are far fewer strips here. Pricey fun . . .
Do not give this book to a kid!.......2003-05-06
It will give the child nightmares that will linger for years. Sadly, Millionaire here abandons the lyricism of the Sock Monkey stories in favor of extreme grossout humor and, what a surprise, misogyny. There are a few good strips here, and the drawing talent is still evident, but the jokes are mostly both witless and grim. (Example: a man decides that he'll be more like a woman if he "cuts off his penis and walks around crying." That WOULD make a dude cry.) My impression is that Millionaire is himself so easily grossed out by things like menstruation, that he wants to take it out on the world by making them feel as nasty as he does. Hopefully he's worked out some issues with this one, and will return to a more benevolent Sock-Monkey Land soon.

Revenge therapy kit is more effective than psychotherapy.......2003-03-31
Hilarious too. The humor is worth a month of psychotherapy sessions. A great stress reliever. Save money on psychotherapy bills, try this instead.
A Must For The Terminally Curious!.......2000-04-12
I got this little kit a few months ago. What interested me was a visit to New Orleans. And to that famous VooDoo queen Marie LeVeau. I learned that it is for fun and entertainment and the little doll who comes with pins is cute but I don't believe I'll be trying to put a spell on anyone. Relieve stress any way you can. If this helps, great!
Absolutely outrageously funny - and a great stress reliever!.......1999-06-24
I bought this book for some fellow "inmates" at work. It is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. What a wonderful way to relieve stress. This book sure does the trick. I probably could buy dozens and give them out to a lot of people here - I've already got four people asking me where I got it because they want to buy one for a friend or relative. What a clever idea. Thanks for making work fun.
Book Description
"One of the best contemporary American film scholars over the past decade. Janet Staiger points towards new directions which the study of cinema must consider in the coming years."
--Henry Jenkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Film and television have never been more prevalent or watched than they are now, yet we still have little understanding of how people process and make use of what they see. And though we acknowledge the enormous role the media plays in our culture, we have only a vague sense of how it actually influences our attitudes and desires.
In
Perverse Spectators, Janet Staiger argues that studying the interpretive methods of spectators within their historical contexts is both possible and necessary to understand the role media plays in culture and in our personal lives. This analytical approach is applied to topics such as depictions of violence, the role of ratings codes, the horror and suspense genre, historical accuracy in film, and sexual identities, and then demonstrated through works like JFK, The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Psycho, and A Clockwork Orange. Each chapter shows a different approach to reconstructing audience responses to films, consistently and ingeniously finding traces of what would otherwise appear to be unrecoverable information.
Using vivid examples, charting key concepts, and offering useful syntheses of long-standing debates,
Perverse Spectators constitutes a compelling case for a reconsideration of the assumptions about film reception which underlie contemporary scholarship in media studies.
Taking on widely influential theories and scholars,
Perverse Spectators is certain to spark controversy and help redefine the study of film as it enters the new millennium.

Great Guide in Your Pocket.......2005-10-01
Plilip Sweeny takes us on a journey through Cuba's rich musical heritage. In this compact edition, the reader is introduced to the major musical elements and artists that contributed to the development of Cuba's contemporary music culture. In addition, this booklet is a great guide to the recordings that capture Cuba's musical traditions of Rumba, Son, Bolero, Trova, and the music that emerged throughout the 20th century.
This is guide is a must have for the enthusiast of Cuban music.
This Book Fills in the Gaps.......2004-09-29
This Rough Guide packs far more information in its pocket sized format than most of the other currently available full-sized books on the topic of Cuban Jazz. Most other books on the topic would have you think that Cuban music began with Desi Arnaz and ended with the now graying artists featured in Buena Vista Social Club. This Rough Guide discusses Son, Bolero, Mambo and other musical styles, describing their origin and the (not widely known) artists who first popularized them. And ... it picks up with the new generation of musicians that bring that work current. I used the book's comprehensive descriptions (together with Amazon's "Listen to Samples" features) -- to build a broad collection that begins at the beginning and ends at the end.

Not an audiobook.......2007-02-03
There is apparently a typo on the product information. This is not an audiobook. I thought it was the "Rough Guide to the Cuban Music Story" book read aloud, which of course, would have been fantastically convenient. However, the tracks on this CD are all audio tracks (the same as the other CD which does say "Audio CD.") I notified amazon of this supposed error, so I hope they will get to the bottom of it soon. However, I would somewhat disagree with one of the other reviewer's opinions. Yes, some of the tracks had "different" versions of tunes we may be familiar with, but I thought there were also some great and representative works present, in the versions in which we are familiar. I was going to immediately return it when I discovered it was not an audiobook, but then ended up adding it to my collection.

Customer Reviews:
this book will help you make money.......2007-01-10
This book explains the essential technical patterns that every trader should know. One must read this book very carefully as there are many subtle clues that can be missed.
This book will help you make money. Let me say that there are a lot traders looking for an easy to make money. There is no easy way. There will be times when the patterns in this book don't work. Does that make the book/pattern invalid? No. There is no pattern that will work everytime. You are trading these patterns based on probablities. If these patterns work for you half of the time, you should be in good shape. The rest is money management. That is one area of the book where there isn't enough focus. I would also suggest reading Edwards and Magee along with Murphy.
Technical Analysis as Birdwatching.......2007-01-07
Edwards and Magee wrote the first book on technical analysis over seventy years ago, and since that time Bulkowski appears to be the only person who has ever sat down and tried to systematize and test the hypotheses of technical analysis, and that's to his credit. The problem is that he spends an inordinate amount of time testing and identifying perfectly useless technical formtions that nobody in their right mind would try to trade. Take a look at the chart on page 60, which is a stock in a "broadening top." He lists a buy point at around $10.25 and a sell point about two months later at around $12, after the stock had peaked at $14. That's not a bad return, but take a look at the chart and ask yourself if there's any identifiable reason to buy at $10.25 or sell at $12. The fact that the stock forms a "broadening top" may be interesting in retrospect, but you can't trade stocks in retrospect. Or consider the "diamond" formation, which is treated beginning on page 138. Here is my question: how or why would you trade a diamond pattern? Because the "diamond" is often so large, the resulting "breakout" will often just bump right into the old resistance or support. The fact that it's a "diamond" pattern may be interesting, but identifying the formation alone is not enough. Identifying a pattern and successfully trading it are not the same thing. To be fair to the author, this is not a how-to trading book but a digest of a larger reference work on trading patterns. Even so, it would make sense to focus on tradable patterns instead of providing an exhaustive catalog of every pattern under the sun. The style is also jokey and informal, which just makes it easier for Bulkowksi to avoid the most important question, so what? What good is this information? Is it tradable, and how?
Not the best place to start.......2006-08-06
I don't think this is a good starting book to learn chart patterns. There is a a lot of good information in the book no doubt, but I found it difficult to read, filled with endless stats about how certain patterns perform, etc. I'm giving it one star because the title doesn't deliver. This is not a good book for getting STARTED in chart patterns. For the BEGINNER, I recommend Stikky Stock Charts--it will get you up and running quickly on the basics and then you can move on to this book perhaps.
Something for Everyone.......2006-07-12
"Getting Started in Chart Patterns" is an excellent reference guide and one of the few books on the market which reports the performance of individual chart patterns (based on Tom's extensive testing). Certainly it is a good leader to Tom's mothership book, "Encyclopedia of Chart patterns" and is a bargain at $20 (even more so at the $13 Amazon is offering the book).
One of my pet peeves when I first got interested in Technical Analysis was the cost of many of the books and it was hard to find cheap books which provide a feeler as to what Technical Analysis is all about. Other than the "Encyclopedia" there is no other book out there of its type and is worth having on this merit alone.
The book is not without its faults. First and foremost was the irritating use of "Jake" as the protagonist of the real-world trades offered as examples throughout. The conversational style employed to describe the trades didn't fit with the cold facts offered by the rest of the book and came across as too high school, if the author had stuck to the style of his chapter on "More Trades - Putting it all Together" then this would have been more appropriate. It's a small gripe and others may disagree with me - but the real world trades nicely support the cold statistics on offer for each pattern.
The book has a handy chapter on The Top 10 Performing Bottoms, ranking them from 1-10 including flags, pipe bottoms, rounding bottoms, triangles, wedges, eve-eve double bottoms and the ever popular head-and-shoulder pattern. It would have been good to see the same treatment given to tops (there is a section on tops, but it is more haphazard in its composition), something for the next edition perhaps?
I did like the section on Busted Patterns as well as a cheat sheet index of chart patterns and a table showing a list of chart pattern performance and ranking which can be photocopied and stuck on a wall.
The book is best used as an accompaniment to a more introduction style book on Technical Analysis - it provides the performance data necessary to help develop your own scans for selecting stocks eg. For my own research, when is it important to include volume as a component of a scan.
Again, for the price you can't go wrong.
Thorough and helpful.......2006-03-20
I have been interested in stock market trading for a long time. Mr. Bulkowski is the first author I have encountered who is extremely realistic about the risks involved in trading. He is frank about the reality that you will most likely lose money in trading. I appreciate that honesty. That said, he gives one tools about how to maximize profits and minimize losses, so that one can come out ahead overall.
This is an extremely readable book, artfully crafted with his fictional character to keep the reader engaged while learning important points about trading. This is a very helpful book to one who is beginning, yet is a book for advanced traders to keep close for constant reference. I have read it cover to cover, and still refer to it frequently.
I have found very useful information on Mr. Bulkowski's website, to which another reviewer refers. That review spoke volumes about his website, so there is no need to expound further on it here.
