Modern knowledge of a Byzantine text now usually carried the Painter's manual or Hermeneia could be said to have begun in 1832. That such a text existed passed largely unnoticed until a French archeologist, traveling among the monasteries of Mount Athos, came across some painters at work in the monastery of Esphigmenou who showed him the text that they were using. A copy was made resulting in the first, albeit erroneous, publication in German in 1955. A correct edition, source unknown, was published in 1909, which has been accepted as the standard since then. This current English edition is from the 1909 Greek text and has attempted to be faithful not only in context but in appearance and layout.
We are fortunate to know as much about the man who compiled this Hermeneia which bears his name as we do. Dionysus was born about 1670 in the village of Fourna in central Greece. At sixteen, he went to Mount Athos, and from the early years of the century became established as a painter. In Karyes (on Mount Athos), he built a kellion (cell) and chapel dedicated to John the Baptist, which he himself painted. Between 1724-1728 he was back in his native village of fourna, and painted the interior of the church of the Transfiguration there. He is last known to have been alive in 1744.
The date of Dionysius' compilation of the Painter's Manual is probably of his second period on Mount Athos, that is, 1730-1734. While he is known to have painted icons in several locations, his stature as an artist must always have been exceeded by his other gifts, and the interest of these works lies in their relationship to the literary works of their creator.

This is a GORGEOUS full-color book with amazingly detailed photos. A great history of mourning/sentimental pieces. This little book could go head-to-head with any of the larger volumes and win hands down. The author of this book clearly loves this beautiful jewelry and this book proves it. I would gladly have paid triple the price for this book and still felt it was well worth the cost.

Mother ran out of humor.......2007-04-27
This should have been two books instead of one. That would have been hard considering the book is so small. At the beginning I loved the book and could identify with many issues. It was nice to look back and laugh. She started it as a funny book about being pregnant and raising children. She should have stopped the book there. I had planned to give it to my daughter who is pregnant now. But then the author went into some very sad situations concerning what happened to her children when they were grown. She could have written a book about how she handled those situations but they did not belong in this book. I will not be passing this book along to my daughter.
A good laugh from a small book.......2007-03-20
I enjoyed reading this book...you'll definitely laugh. She's got a way of making you see how you CAN laugh at everyday life, even when you're in the thick of it.
But I was surprised by the size of the book when I received it. (They give the dimensions on Amazon, but I've never looked at them...I will now!) :-) This book is a little bigger than 4x6 and is less than half an inch thick. You could read it cover to cover in a half hour. So, it seems a bit overpriced to me.
It's a good read, but in retrospect, I wouldn't purchase it again.

Quick simply, Johnson has again provided a book that is both true to life and very funny. Her ability to remind us of the humorous side of life, even when life might be hurting, too, is a gift to be treasured. When I first picked up this book to skim it - borrowed from a friend - I laughed so much I had to stop reading because I was crying with laughter, unable to see and with an aching side. I tried to stay away from it, but had to continue reading - and thit all happened again. And again. Get it, read it, enjoy it, and share this gift of laughter with your friends!

The production values of a famous film auteur are revealed in Robert Emmet Long's book, JAMES IVORY IN CONVERSATION.
Merchant Ivory production secrets are revealed in great detail, with much gossip and in great depth. Long's questions are very knowledgeable, and James Ivory's answers are candid, humorous and often quite pointed. We learn much about his relationship with Anthony Hopkins. We find out such how frightening the Eiffel Tower scene was for the actors in LE DIVORCE. And, we go behind the scenes as Ivory interviews various cast members and finally lands them for roles in his beautiful movies.
His partnership with the late Ismail Merchant is set before us warmly, and his appreciation for India, Paris and Venice are detailed delightfully.
Throughout the interview, Ivory gives the specifics of his many uses for art and artists in his films. The difficulties in working with Picasso's family are well told, and the fabrication of many pieces of art for his films (with permission from the artists, of course) is well explained and fascinating.
Students of film and art will be smiling throughout the book as the settings in so many wonderful films are described with life-like realism.

Although he cut his teeth playing trumpet with Fletcher Henderson's orchestra, Rex Stewart was best known for his tenure with Duke Ellington--particularly for the sort of delicious half-valving he applied to showpieces like "Boy Meets Horn." But Stewart was a gifted writer, too. Rex Stewart offers chapters on some of his contemporary jazz musicians; most of these articles have appeared in Downbeat issues in the sixties before they were collected for this book. They offer very interesting insights into some his colleagues; they are well-written and full of anecdotes. They make an enjoyable and worthwhile reading. Highly recommended.

This was a pretty good book for the price,especially when it described some of the techniques and pure luck of how players won the big one!The new age stuff was interesting but I wouldn't reccommend using it to try and win the lottery.It covers various aspects and methods of lottery play that are still used today but nothing groundbreaking or will guarantee winning anything!
