Peter Milton has long been respected for his exquisite drawings and subsequent etchings for many years. This catalogue raisonne of his drawings offers fine evidence of why he is so widely respected.

Milton draws in black and white, creating large scale images that are excruciatingly detailed n their realism, yet he goes beyond reality and suffuses his drawings with ethereal otherworldliness as though making dreams visual. Drawing with graphite on Mylar makes much of this impossible draughtsmanship possible, though his works on paper (and in his etchings) are equally as delicate.

Milton works in series: 'Country Pieces', 'La Belles et la Bete', 'Interiors', and the incomprehensibly evocative and beautiful 'The Aspern Papers' based on the work of Henry James.For each of the series in this fine book, Milton offers his written thoughts and the book opens with a thoughtful introduction by Rosellen Brown.

This book is a must for Milton admirers and for anyone who appreciates the gift of drawing. Highly recommended.

In scholarly words and stunning, mostly black-and-white photographs, stylemeister François Baudot uses the coffee-table book format to pose an important fashion question: How in the world did the vain modern male give up colorful clothing? As he puts it, "How is it that those 17th century birds of paradise ... turned themselves into jet-black crows?" Baudot says it was the Sun King's fault. Louis XIV, mad for frills and flounces, made everybody who was anybody in France circa 1650 wear billowing shirts with lacy sleeves, plumed hats, polychrome silk stockings, "breeches so voluminous that they made walking a problem," high-heeled shoes, "their bows shaped like a windmill's sails," garters, ribbons, makeup, rings, and miserably hot, outrageously expensive wigs. Louis made fashion "lose all contact with reality."

What could possibly come next? Revolution! "The Louis XIV effect was not to be reproduced.... Thenceforth, in his dress, modern man could now only proceed by way of successively and irreversibly discarding things."

This sounds like a lot of French philosophical jive, but the photos Baudot adduces of fashion-plate men--movie stars, politicos, artists, and anonymous guys--do bear him out. Compare, say, the intricately embroidered getup of the Nawab of Bahawalpur in India, or T. Philips's renowned painting of that mad dandy, Lord Byron, with the book's main procession of men in customary suits of solemn black. England's Prince Philip, looking imperially slim in 1950s London, has much the same stylistic allure as James Joyce posed in his most famous picture in Paris in the 1920s. Mao and de Gaulle evoke similar auras of scary power precisely by renouncing outward sumptuousness for authoritative sartorial abstemiousness. Gary Cooper and Jimmy Stewart, Errol Flynn, Fred Astaire, JFK and Bobby, Prince William at Eton, even fatally flamboyant Jean-Michel Basquiat in the full flower of fame--these men resemble so many distinguished penguins. Even the naked men in the book--Sudanese Nuba tribesmen circa 1949 and Yves Saint Laurent launching his "Y pour homme" perfume in 1971--can be seen in terms of the male expression of power by emphatic understatement in dress.

Ultimately, it's tough to sum up Baudot's thesis. But the man sure knows how to pick cool photographs. --Tim Appelo

There are few books on men's fashion that compare to this extraordinary survey by François Baudot. It is at once informative, scholarly, hilarious, and visually satisfying as Baudot plucks images from history and the present in his approach to defining male Style!

From paintings of the romantic period when color and excess created the Peacock Male to the down dressing style of elimination of all filigree to the bare essentials, this beautifully illustrated book uses images of famous men in paintings then photography, after the camera stepped to the forefront, in documenting fashion. The book is full of men in dark suits - from movie stars to royalty to students to common man. Images include two fine photos of the young Marlon Brando as he defined a style all his own, countless images of 'dressed to the nines' businessmen, politicians, and other dignitaries. The final image is of Prince William at Eton, looking as royal as they come!

But the true joy of this photography portfolio is the witty yet erudite writing of Baudot. This is a dissertation on male vanity that serves equally well as a history book. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

This book is so hysterically and funny in parts, it hurts. You will just recover your breath when you start laughing again. And, it's not the latest stand-up collection from a comic. It's the latest collection of flubs and foibles of one of the world's most complicated and misunderstood languages: English. Richard Lederer, the unofficial king of language, has produced another gem. This should be right alongside Anguished English and The Bride of Anguished English on your bookshelf.

Nice to get details, but not a truly professional effort.......2002-04-15

This review is based on the first edition.

Like many rock bio's, the presentation, organization, writing and editing is often inconsistent. This work has many of those shortcomings, and at times I was vexed by the use of British colloquial jargon and jumpy anecdotal constructions. There is also a fair amount of psyco-babble about what went 'wrong' but that is manifest: Peter is a schizophrenic, and drug use in his or any other case has little or no role in this unfortunate illness (despite what a reviewer states below). This is a medical fact.

But for those who, like me, want any kinds of insights into his impetuous and genius, this book provides some texture and history. And the author is obviously a fan and his genuine enthusiasm for the artist provides a sympathetic context for this tragic figure. And although Greeny is back on stage, which is a wonderful story of its own, the performances I've seen are lack-luster. This book provides a means of understanding his personal and musical journey.

The story of Peter Green is a story of triumph, drugs, the fall from grace, redemption, another fall from grace, redemption again, and over half a lifetime of playing the blues, and being one of the greatest guitarists to come out of Britain. Yet he, his story, and his band (The Original Fleetwood Mac) have long been overlooked.

Oh well. At least we have this extraordinarily written biography to add to our Mac collections. Martin Birch certainly delivers here on a book that is well written, insightful, accurate, detailed, and certainly no less than inspiring. It is about time that someone decided to write about the roller coaster ride that is the life of Peter Green. It is also nice to see that Green is still around, playing the blues, and hasn't succumbed to his traumas as so many fellow musicians have. (His bandmate Danny Kirwan, Syd Barret, and all those drug casualties.) Certainly a worthy read, not just for Fleetwood Mac fans, not just for blues or rock and roll fans, but for everyone who wants to stories that will touch your heart.

I have read this book and it is inspiring and tragic about one of the greatest rock and blues guitarist coming out of the Uk as a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreaker before founding one of the most successful supergroups Fleetwood Mac, and his songs as "Black Magic Woman" (covered by Santana), "Rattlesnake Shake" (covered by Aerosmith) and "The Green Manalishi" (covered by Judas Priest) are exceptional. His LSD abuse led to his nervous breakdown and leaving the business for more than two decades despite his low-keyed comeback in the late 1970's and eaerly 1980's. Now he is back and reclaming his throne as a guitar extraordinaire and with his new band in the shack, and it was good to see this Rock n' Roll Hall Of Famer not living in the Syd Barrett example

Setting the Record Straight.......1999-01-17

At last, a thorough and balanced account of the life and times of one of the great musicians of the last half of the 20th century, whose personal struggles prevented him from enjoying his fame and cementing his reputation. Most people still think Santana wrote "Black Magic Woman."

Until now it's been maddeningly difficult to get much solid information on the phases of Green's career; other than Mick Fleetwood's autobiography, which leaves many questions unanswered, there hasn't been a good reference. This fine volume also includes an authoritative discography and sessionography. A must for any Green fan.

The beautiful guitar talents of Peter Green lead him to fame and fortune, but his self-doubt mixed with hallucinogenic excesses cast him down a hellish road of mental & emotional anguish. How he escapes from this dark existence is a tribute to the healing powers of the human heart. Sad, humorous, and ultimately inspirational. An excellent telling of the original Fleetwood Mac juggernaut which also featured the fine talents of Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer.

Good collection of historical puzzles.......2006-03-02

This is an "unabridged republication" of "The Penguin Book of Curious and Interesting Puzzles", which means nothing was changed except for slight modification of the title. Half the book presents several hundred puzzles taken from various sources, in more or less chronological order. The last half of the book gives solutions to all the puzzles.

Many of the puzzles seem to involve "a trick" around the interpretation of the problem. Some may be frustrated by this, but at least solutions are included, and many of the tricks are quite clever. This book teaches "outside the box" thinking!

My only gripe about the book is that it is an exact copy of the previous edition. I noticed a few errors in the statement and solution to one problem in particular, and these have not been corrected.

Excellent Collection of Puzzles.......2001-12-09

This is an excellent and comprehensive collection of puzzles. It contains most of the classic and well-known puzzles of this type that I know. Also, every puzzle is unique and it does not contain redundant puzzles like "What is the next figure?" or number series.

Most of the puzzles require at most K12 math knowledge, making it suitable for teenagers. The only flaw I found in it was that the puzzle index is not very robust regarding variations on the same puzzle.

All in all, a very good book for hours of pondering.

Fine puzzle book; delivers what title promises.......2001-11-19

For a collection of the best puzzles from around the world throughout history, nothing beats this book. David Wells draws on sources such the medieval monk Alcuin, the 18th-century Ladies' Diary, the Bhakshali Hindu manuscript as well more familiar 19th-century authors like Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland). These puzzles in logic and math range from the pretty easy to the quite challenging, from divided fields and magic squares to riddles and rhymes. But all you need is pencil and paper; no specialized knowledge in math or logic (or advanced degree) is required.

Simple and Useful - less jargon.......2004-09-02

This book's strength is that it is basically an outline of good strategy development. Another reviewer called it the book for "dummies"-like that was a criticism. It provides an excellent guide for real managers trying to get a tough job done in competition with their "real job" requirements. If you need something to impress a teacher, buy something different. If you need to get some strategic planning done in the typical workplace, put this book high on your list of resources.

This book is very poor and I would recommend against purchasing it. This guide is seems to be written by seminar teachers, full of simple one-liners and cheesy analogies that don't really add that much to your understanding of strategy. Possibly a starter guide, but not recommended if you have already read anything on strategy.

Yes the book "simplifies" a difficult process, but the real proof of its worth is actually using the plan set forth by the authors. We are well into year one of following the instructions and our 38 year old company has never communicated to the level it is now. We have already enabled ourselves to take advantage of two major opportunities that would have benn missed without planning by the book.
