Description:
Large severe fires are typically rare in the northern hardwood forests of eastern North America, with estimated return intervals as high as 1400-4500 years. We investigated the history of large severe fires in western Quebec, Canada, where sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.), and eastern hemlock ((Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) dominate a landscape at northern limit of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest region. Using a combination of provincial archives of fire data, interpretation of historic air photos and dendrochronological sampling, we estimated fire frequency in a 179,300ha landscape and tested the hypothesis that time-since-fire is a principal determinant of canopy species composition. Our results indicated that despite its proximity to the boreal mixedwood forest, fires have been relatively infrequent in this landscape, with over 60% of the landscape remaining unburned during the 413 year period of study. The overall fire cycle, an estimate of the time required to burn an area of equivalent size to the study area, was 494 year (95% CI: 373-694). This estimate showed strong temporal partitioning, with an elevated frequency that coincided with the period of pioneering settlement beginning in 1880, and spatial partitioning according to surficial deposits, pine dominance and ecological site type. Multivariate analyses elucidated both (i) distinct assemblages of canopy species that differed in their association with time-since-fire and (ii) the relative importance of environmental variables affecting canopy species composition, where time-since-fire explained the largest amount of variation. This time-since-fire effect suggested an important role for secondary disturbances in influencing composition of the canopy. Given the current long fire cycles, it is likely this landscape will experience an increasing dominance of fire-avoiding species such as sugar maple and eastern hemlock, with consequences for fire-adapted tree species and fire-dependent communities.

Description:
Dendroecological methods for quantifying and dating historical canopy disturbance events have been widely applied for temperate forests, but may not be useful for semi-arid woodlands, where growth is more strongly influenced by drought cycles. Our study focuses on the potential utility of dendroecological methods for reconstructing historical fire in woodlands of the Nevada Great Basin, USA, which are dominated by singleleaf pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla Torr. and Frem.). We assess growth responses to a historical fire of known date, and compare different analytical methods involving radial-growth averaging approaches. Despite the strong influence of climate on radial growth of trees growing in semi-arid woodlands, most pinyon pines sampled in this study exhibited profound growth releases in response to fire. The growth releases could be detected using radial-growth averaging criteria, even given thresholds of percent growth change that effectively eliminated responses to climatic variability. The most conservative dendroecological method was radial-growth averaging with a 10yr moving window and a percent growth change (PGC) threshold of at least 125%. This method detected the known fire for nearly one in three surviving trees, with very minimal occurrence of false positives in control trees or in the historical record. Results suggest that such approaches may be useful for identifying and approximately dating historical fires that burned adjacent to living pinyon trees. However, these methods will likely not be able to separate historical wildfire from other disturbance types, such as pinyon ips (Ips confusus) or root rot fungi, which could be expected to cause growth releases in surviving trees. Also, the year of growth release following the known burn was delayed until years of good precipitation, resulting in a lagged response that can confound the ability of growth release methods to accurately pinpoint the year of disturbance.

Elvis Fashion: From Memphis to Vegas.......2005-01-27
An absolutely wonderful book! What a treat to be taken into the archives at Elvis Presley Enterprises and be able to see up-close some of the clothing worn by the King of Rock and Roll. Being able to put the clothing with the time and place he wore it is a history lesson. Julie Mundy is a serious Elvis fan who gives the rest of us fans a peek into something we can only dream about.
Much more than a photo book.......2004-04-17
The basic concept of this book is what basically makes it great. Old photos of Elvis in all kinds of different outfits, both for the stage and from his personal wardrobe, are paired with the brand new photos of the same clothes now kept in the Graceland archives.
As simple as that, but it works. The new photos are truly great and together with the high class layout, it makes it a really quality investment - a coffee table book in the best sense of the word. The accompanying text by Julie Mundy is informative and well-written. No need to wonder who made what clothes, when, what the cost was at the time, and when Elvis wore it - all the information is right here. I personally really enjoyed the parts about the people who designed for Elvis, in particular the interview bits with Bill Belew who amongst other things did Elvis' famous jumpsuits.
The book is also a look back through history. It reminds you that Elvis dared to have a fashion style uniquely his own way before fashion dictated that everyone should have their own individual style. The book is a beautiful and interesting document of Elvis' transformation - and the development in fashion as Elvis interpretated it - over his 20 years career and definitely a good buy!
Expensive, but well worth it!.......2004-01-15
Wow -- I love this book!!!!!! Having extensively researched Elvis's wardrobe for my book The Girls' Guide to Elvis: The Clothes, the Hair, the Women, and More!, I am familiar with a great deal of Elvis's clothing -- this book is filled with things I've never seen before! What amazing access to Elvis's closet!! If you're fascinated by Elvis's personal style (and who isn't?!), you'll want to own this beautiful coffee table book. Well, well worth the price!
Thrilling New Photos of all things ELVIS!.......2004-01-14
Great work and collaboration from Graceland executives made this book possible. Julie Mundy brings us closer than ever to many of Elvis's clothes and wardrobes. All photos are well described, professional, and exciting!
This book also shows us some of Wurthmeiers photos that are stunning!
Great coffee table material and Conversation Starter
Would have been a great pleasure to author this book!
Long live the King!

Full Use of CD-Rom in Windows XP.......2006-10-08
It is not possible to install the cd-rom program in Windows XP. All the features can be accessed, however, directly from the CD-Rom. Place the cd-rom in your drive and open the folder named "DA". Right click on the DA.exe icon and select "Properties". From the properties menu you can select Windows 95 compatibility. Then double-click on DA.exe and you will get the opening screen. From there all menu items are fully functional in XP.
A Doonesbury fan and loving it all !.......2005-12-05
Been a fan for years and years and before that Pogo, and before that L'il Abner. Through the years, these three strips have provided excellent political satire.I have collected almost all the books on Doonesbury that have come out over the years. No doubt about it ,the story lines and artwork have improved massively over the years. For example ,just compare an early book,
"Even Revolutionaries Like Chocolate Cookies" from 1970 with one of the more recent like "Got War"(2003)and you'll see that remarkable growth.Everybody has had trouble keeping the characters sorted out and when I first saw this book I was totally blown away ,particularly over the CD with its 9000 strips;virtually the whole works. However,as other reviewers have mentioned the enthusiasm wanes as one begins to use it.Having said that, the book and CD deserve a 5 Star rating ,nevertheless the fans deserve an updated and improved CD,without the hassel as mentioned.I think it would only be reasonable if one were to be included with the next book. The reviews show that the fans were definately given less than expected.
Another great resource for Doonesbury fans is a little gem
called "Doonesbury Trivia" an unofficial Final Exam by Jeffrey A. O'Hare. It was published in 1984.The copy I have is the only one I've seen.It also has a note on the back that it "is not authorized by G.B.Trudeau or by any other firm associated with Doonesbury". Still,it is well worth looking for.
I have also been cutting out the strips for the last few years;though only God knows what I'll end up doing with them.
By the way,"Rolling Stone Magazine" did a special on Doonesbury on August 5,2004.It shows the very elusive Trudeau at work on a drawing, talking with a soldier in Kuwait and with his wife Jane Pauley; a good addition to your collection. And did you know,Gary Trudeau and George W.Bush were Harvard classmates?
You might want to read my Review of "Flashbacks" 25 years of Doonesbury,I also wrote today,December 4,2005."Now you know the rest of the story."
CD work around.......2005-11-06
Run the Cd and view it with Windows Explorer. Open the DA file. Doubble click DA.exe
Strips can only be viewed in order but at least you can see them. Most of the other features work too.
CD can't be installed.......2004-01-30
I can not install the CDRom under Windows 2000. Its asking for windows 95 and ends installation with the message that SHADOW causes a failure in module TMP340E.EXE on 0003:1092 and will close.
That very disappounting
If someone has a solution then please let me know.
the CD-ROM is disappointing.......2001-07-07
I really enjoy this cartoon and so I immediately purchased this item, but the CD-ROM baffled and infuriated me. There was no way to navigate around the CD, so one just has to enter in a subject at random and be satisfied with the strip that pops up. Also images appear curiously low on the screen and there are no scroll bars on the side of the screen so a user can move up. Perhaps I got a defective CD.

In the world of contemporary travel writing, Bill Bryson, the bestselling author of A Walk in the Woods, often emerges as a major contender for King of Crankiness. Granted, he complains well and humorously, but between every line of his travel books you can almost hear the tinny echo: "I wanna go home, I miss my wife."
Happily, I'm a Stranger Here Myself unleashes a new Bryson, more contemplative and less likely to toss daggers. After two decades in England, he's relocated to Hanover, New Hampshire. In this collection (drawn from dispatches for London's Night & Day magazine), he's writing from home, in close proximity to wife and family. We find a happy marriage between humor and reflection as he assesses life both in New England and in the contemporary United States. With the telescopic perspective of one who's stepped out of the American mainstream and come back after 20 years, Bryson aptly holds the mirror up to U.S. culture, capturing its absurdities--such as hotlines for dental floss, the cult of the lawsuit, and strange American injuries such as those sustained from pillows and beds. "In the time it takes you to read this," he writes, "four of my fellow citizens will somehow manage to be wounded by their bedding."
The book also reflects the sweet side of small-town USA, with columns about post-office parties, dining at diners, and Thanksgiving--when the only goal is to "get your stomach into the approximate shape of a beach ball" and be grateful. And grateful we are that the previously peripatetic Bryson has returned to the U.S., turning his eye to this land--while living at home and near his wife. Under her benevolent influence, he entertains through thoughtful insights, not sarcastic stabs. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
The master humorist and bestselling author of
A Walk in the Woods now guides us on an affectionate, hysterically funny tour of America's most outrageous absurdities.
After living in Britain for two decades, Bill Bryson recently moved back to the United States with his English wife and four children (he had read somewhere that nearly three million Americans believed they had been abducted by aliens--as he later put it, "it was clear my people needed me"). They were greeted by a new-and-improved America that boasts microwave pancakes, twenty-four-hour dental-floss hotlines, and the staunch conviction that ice is not a luxury item.
Delivering the brilliant comic musings that are a Bryson hallmark,
I'm a Stranger Here Myself recounts his sometimes disconcerting reunion with the land of his birth. From motels ("one of those things--airline food is another--that I get excited about and should know better") to careless barbers ("in the mirror I am confronted with an image that brings to mind a lemon meringue pie with ears"),
I'm a Stranger Here Myself chronicles the quirkiest aspects of life in America, right down to our hardware-store lingo, tax-return instructions, and vulnerability to home injury ("statistically in New Hampshire I am far more likely to be hurt by my ceiling or underpants than by a stranger").
Along the way Bill Bryson also reveals his rules for life (#1: It is not permitted to be both slow and stupid. You must choose one or the other); delivers the commencement address to a local high school ("I've learned that if you touch a surface to see if it's hot, it will be"); and manages to make friends with a skunk. The result is a book filled with hysterical scenes of one man's attempt to reacquaint himself with his own country, but it is also an extended, if at times bemused, love letter to the homeland he has returned to after twenty years away.
Customer Reviews:
Not my favorite author in this genre.......2007-07-22
I read through about the first third of this offering by Bill Bryson and found I simply could not get into it. Written in the spirit of Dave Barry, Mary Roach and maybe Erma Bombeck, it is intended to draw humor from the little idiosyncrasies of daily American life as seen by an expatriot returned from years in the U.K.
Where I find Dave Barry's turns of phrase highly amusing I tend to find Bill's commentary more rankling. Each article highlights some aspect of American life that I find less than satisfying and the commentary, though trying to be amusing, simply comes off as frustrating.
Funny and thoughtful about the US and Britain........2007-07-03
This book has a charming premise. Bryson is an American writer who lived in Britain for over twenty years, marrying an Englishwoman and raising two children. He moved back to the States with his family, where he wrote a series of essays about America for a British audience.
Bryson is a keen and witty observer of life. How many of us could write an entire essay prompted by the existence of a 24-hour help line on a dental floss dispenser? The essays are uniformly amusing, sometimes side-splitting.
Thought not as consistently funny as Dave Barry, Bryson goes further by adding a healthy dose of thoughtfulness to it all. Throughout the book he ponders what it means to be American, comparing and contrasting it with what it means to British. Every so often the question of Canadianness pops in as well. As countries divided by a common language, they provide a nice playground for Bryson, and he has a good time with them.
The sheer silliness of being American.......2007-06-03
Laugh-out-loud hilarious. Bryson's observations about American society and its absurdities rings so true and the author is the perfect vehicle for showcasing these stories. He is just so lovable in his books. His absentmindedness and his sharp wit both serve him extremely well. While poking fun at others, he also pokes fun at himself. His work is just priceless.
One funny little story after another.......2007-06-01
In this book, Bill Bryson presents a compilation of weekly columns he had published upon his return from England to the States, after being away for 20 years. And boy did he had a cultural shock! He presents in a VERY funny way the things that we take for granted every day and, one by one, dissects the very elements that make up the American way of life in an insightful way.
The book is assembled in a chapter fashion with a certain structure that connects them whenever applicable. The chapters are short and self-contained enough to turn the book into an endless feed of amazing 5-minute fun reads before bedtime or while you are sitting in a waiting room.
My favourite author.......2007-05-30
Bill Bryson has to be one of the 'most readable' authors for folk who prefer a good chuckle. My wife is not so happy and moans about my giggling keeping her awake.
Keep up the good work Bill

Book Description
The canon of popular cinema has long been rife with fantastic tales, yet critical studies have too often expediently mixed the fantasy genre with its kindred science fiction and horror films or dismissed it altogether as escapist fare. Framing Monsters: Fantasy Film and Social Alienation reconsiders the cultural significance of this storytelling mode by investigating how films seemingly divorced from reality and presented in a context of timelessness are, in fact, encoded with the social practices and beliefs of their era of production.
Situating representative fantasy films within their cultural moments, Joshua David Bellin illustrates how fantastic visions of monstrous others seek to propagate negative stereotypes of despised groups and support invidious hierarchies of social control. In constructing such an argument, Framing Monsters not only contests dismissive attitudes toward fantasy but also challenges the psychoanalytic criticism that has thus far dominated its limited critical study.
Beginning with celebrated classics, Bellin locates King Kong (1933) within the era of lynching to evince how the film protects whiteness against supposed aggressions of a black predator and reviews The Wizard of Oz (1939) as a product of the Depression’s economic anxieties. From there, the study moves to the cult classic animated Sinbad Trilogy (1958–1977) of Ray Harryhausen, films rampant with xenophobic fears of the Middle East as relevant today as when the series was originally produced.
Advancing to more recent subjects, Bellin focuses on the image of the monstrous woman and the threat of reproductive freedom found in Aliens (1986), Jurassic Park (1993), and Species (1995) and on depictions of the mentally ill as dangerous deviants in 12 Monkeys (1996) and The Cell (2000). An investigation into physical freakishness guides his approach to Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Beauty and the Beast (1991). He concludes with a discussion of X-Men (2000) and Lord of the Rings (2001–2003), commercial giants that extend a recent trend toward critical self-reflection within the genre while still participating in the continuity of social alienation.
Written to enhance rather than undermine our understanding of fantastic cinema, Framing Monsters invites filmmakers, critics, and fans alike to reassess this tremendously popular and influential film type and the monsters that populate it.

my first "complete" date with a chess program..........2005-02-22
My first chess program was Sargon, running on Apple Computer. It was very impressive and beat me easily. My next two Sargon programs (II and III) were for Commodore 64. I guessed even my Fidelity Chess Computer ran on one of these versions of Sargon. I was always curious about the internal working mechanism of these programs. I tried to study the machine codes (6502 and 6510) of Sargon and Sargon III, but gave up about 10% into the process. I found this book from my school library, but at that time my programming experience was weak and had no tools to test the program in the book. Later, on the job, I found some discarded Z80 motherboards, and I was back to study this Sargon program. It is a very good way to understand how the internal program works. Now I have studied two more programs GNU Chess 5.00 and Phalanx, Sargon was still a "good-date" to remember. Sargon was written for micro-machine when memory was at the premium; therefore the code was in machine code. It took lots of efforts to go through it but it is worth it. With high-speed CPUs and plenty of memory newer computers provided, most programs are now in C or higher-level languages. These higher-level languages help a lot to speed through the programs. I have a copy of Sargon book. It is one of the historical documents of chess playing programs in particular and of artificial intelligence in general.
One more point, Sargon was the first program written for microcomputer to compete with other more dedicated and/or specialized chess engines, and Sargon had won some honorable prizes. If you can afford one for your chess program library, keep one.
Computer Chess - Program Line By Line.......2000-11-08
First saw the book back in 1979. Bought the book in (May) 1981 and studied the program. Bought a TRS-80 Model 1 (second hand) in 1982. With the computer was the SARGON program. I played a few games on level 1 and it won. I thought I knew the program, but it still beat me. I took the program apart line by line using the book and started to win. I got up to level 4, of the 6 levels, and I would beat it more time than it beat me. (A game would take 2 or 3 days.) The book is the heart and soul to the program. It IS the program.

The appendixes are not and make up half the book. Boringly basic. If you know absolutely nothing about government contracting, it is worth the read.
