Book Description
The latest addition to the Trademarks series catches the wave of today's craze for the look of the sixties and seventies. Bursting with vibrant color and imagination, advertising art made a dramatic leap in maturity as it soared into the free love and "me" decades. This collection features the best of the pop culture explosion.

Good reference.......2004-11-20
This book is a good reference, with a nice introduction by Philip Meggs, and some nice commentary, but it just kills me that you are not given the artist or firm behind any of the logos. For each logo, the author has listed the Company name, Company location, type of product, and year of execution of the logo, but if you are interested in the names behind the marks you will be frustrated that this piece of information is omitted.
Brilliant but brief overview of bygone symbols.......2001-03-08
A terrific overview of trademarks, this remarkable book break symbols down into sections - corporate america, typography, etc - that make the book easily digestable. Great as inspiration for graphic designers, as source material, or as one of my friends recently did, ideas for tattoos. Good stuff.
Lotsa Fun, and Informative........2000-02-04
So far, the biggest kick I got out of this book was seeing the trademark for National Airlines. I remember when the only air service we got here in little Sarasota was from Eastern, National, and Florida Airlines, none of which are in existence any more. This book shows you how a symbol can be ubiquitous and then vanish.
Book Description
Americans began the twentieth century standing in Europe's sartorial shadow, yet ended by outfitting the world in blue jeans, T-shirts and sneakers. How did this come about? What changes in American culture were reflected in fashion? What role did popular culture play? This important overview of American fashion in the twentieth century considers how Americans went from imitating British and French fashion to developing their own sense of style. It examines such influences on dress as class, jazz and hip hop, war, the space race, movies, television and sports. Further, the book shows how gender, psychology, advertising, public policy, shifting family values, the American design movement and expertise in mass production profoundly influenced an American style that has been exported across the globe.

A luscious array of heavenly, hellish shoes.......2006-06-19
Trasko defines the subject of her study as "... only the most influential creations, as well as particularly inventive and unusual footwear. The focus here is on high fashion, with relatively little attention to working-class or middle-class shoes, which deserve their own study." And the day that we see a glossy book about those shoes will be the revolution. The reader should be aware the "quite a few fetish models are depicted, for they are among the most awe-inspiring shoes of their era ... ." I don't criticize their inclusion, but adults might want to flip through and decide if they want to explain to little ones why some of the women are oddly dressed, or naked except for boots. The reader should also be aware that shoes are generally limited to English, French, Italian and American.
As a woman who chooses her shoes almost entirely for comfort, this is about as close as I care to get to wearing most of them, but I must admit that they are sometimes gorgeous objects. It is frustrating that so little design effort is put into practical shoes: just because I like to be comfortable doesn't mean that I don't appreciate attractive stitching and clever color combinations. Trasko quotes shoe-designer Robert Vivier as saying that shoe design is "a sculptural problem in which the center is always a void." Generally speaking, I find that craft is better than art if one is going to actually use the thing. Trasko is quite aware of the tension here: as much as she loves high-fashion shoes, she is not blind to the foot problems that extreme styles cause, or the inhibiting effect such shoes have had one women. She celebrates the opportunity to switch among different styles.
The book draws upon many sources: advertising, design drawings, and what appear to be museum shots. As a result, although most of the book is in color, some are in black-and-white if they were shot before color became common. The pictures are generally large enough to show the details. They are placed so that almost all of the detailing, types of heels, for example, and all the designs discussed are illustrated. The text is generally in chronological order with significant detail about changes in design, i.e., the stileto heel. In some cases, pictures of the clothing fashionable at the time is included. My one suggestion for improvement would be to have more pictures like this (publishers just love lengthening books!) Althea Mackenzie's Shoes and Slippers: From Snowshill, one of the World's Leading Collections of Costume and Accessories of the 18th and 19th Centuries did a effective job of this using very small pictures: not a lot of detail, but one gets some sense of the overall effect. I found the text relatively succinct and very clear. There is some discussion of major designers and manufacturers, as well as changes in methods of production.
The book includes a table-of-contents, notes, a bibliography and an index. There is a mistake in the table of contents: the photographic credits are on page 131, not 128.
Both beautiful and informative.
Book Description
The first edition of this book established itself as required reading for all those interested in the development of the fashion business. There are other books on contemporary dress, but this account gives particular weight to the commercial organization of the industry; from designer and textile manufacturer right through to the consumer. This completely revised edition brings the story up to the 1990s with new text, 280 illustrations and 16 color plates. Fashion in this century has ceased to be the private domain of the wealthy. The era when such names as Worth, Paquin and Sciaparelli could dominate has given way to one where style and 'look' can be taken from a host of various sources: designers and manufacturers, department and chain stores, the boutiques or the streets. This established reference work looks behind the scenes for an understanding of the social, economic and technical changes that have caused this revolution. It is a story of fashion shocks: two world wars, the impact of new fibers and manufacturing techniques, and the succession of youth explosions: mini-skirts, punk and sportswear. The narrative is based on research into the history of couture houses, retailers and manufacturers and the authors' experience and contact with the fashion business.

Book Description
In an Influential Fashion profiles 164 fashion designers and retailers from many countries who have had the most impact on American dress and culture from the late 19th century to the year 2000. Each entry introduces a fashion personality or retailer whose influence on the industry reflected societal, political, and/or economic change. The commercial side of fashion, neglected in most fashion encyclopedias, is explored here, with details of licensing agreements and marketing innovations not easily found elsewhere. Students and professionals in fashion design, retailing, costume research, and social history will all find this book a valuable addition to their libraries. Each entry includes the birth and death dates of designers, their education and training, career highlights and accomplishments, and awards they have won. The entry describes the designer or retailer's signature styles, with a keen emphasis on the designer's contributions to American fashion design and culture. As appropriate, the entry summarizes any licensing agreements and influential marketing innovations. Web sites, lists of museums and fashion design schools, and numerous appendices make In an Influential Fashion a complete resource on American fashion history for the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-09-04
This book reads like an extended high school term paper. Some of the biographies could qualify for an entry to the wikipedia- others barely merit an entry in a bibliography...for a high school term paper. The illustrations are inked by the same undistinctive hand- which is rather sad and occasionally pathetic. The absence of context- the absence of variety, the absence of flavor all make for a very dull and uniforming "encyclopedia" indeed. I shudder to think of the school papers that will be written using this book as source material.
Are the authors and editors that worked on this project so uninspired by this field?
Will delight collections solid in fashion history and design.......2002-08-06
In An Influential Fashion isn't for your casual home or art library collection, but will delight collections solid in fashion history and design. Over a hundred sixty fashion designers and retailers from many countries are profiled in entries that cover the personality's lasting influence on the industry. Eddie's Many Sides.......2006-07-23
One of the most gifted actors around, and always a bit unstable. Covering the gamit from childhood, to his biggest public scandal, everytime we think Eddie is finally "in a really good place" as he was quoted in 1996 by the author, his life seems to shipwreck again. Apparently Eddie still has some "skeletons in the closet." A possible cause for the breakup of his seemingly happy marriage and family life, well after the release of this book. The incident in West Hollywood's redlight district, on the morning of May 2, 1997 just won't go away. And after seeing recent photographs of Eddie with another well known male celebrity, causes one to question whether Eddie actually favors a certain lifestyle. Mr. Sanello's book obviously opened some doors Mr. Murphy certainly would have rather left closed. Hopeully all goes well in Mr. Murphy's life, but with Eddie, one never really knows the true story.
fantastic.......2003-01-29
this book was fantastic and very informative,it goes behind the man we all know and into his life and his desire to be financially free and have a family to live with,it has funny moments also and misquoted jokes but all in all are great read.
This Book is a waste of time. Juvenile........1999-03-30
This book was entirely a waste of time. Sanello's account of Murphy was shallow to uninteresting. Sanello even mis-quoted jokes at times. The book was empty, and barely had enough fresh information on Murphy to fill a magazine article.
The author also failed to effectively use metephores to illustrate his point. Rather, his analogies were clumsy and unremarkable.
Save yourself some time and rent Murphy's movie Boomerang instead.

The Macfarlans' classic collection of ingenious Native American games, first published in 1958, remains a wonderful source of both game ideas and insights into Native American cultures. The two combine easily since many games are based on skills children would need as adults or on the legends of their tribe. And the games are truly fun! Very rarely do they require much beyond what nature provides, making these ideas perfect for camping trips or anyplace you may suddenly have to keep the kids -- or yourself -- entertained.
Book Description
Rich collection of 150 authentic American Indian games for boys and girls of all ages — running, relay, kicking, throwing and rolling, tossing and catching, guessing, group-challenge and many other games — that develop dexterity, endurance, good sportsmanship and other skills. 74 black-and-white illustrations. Introduction.

Handbook of American Indian Games.......2000-12-08
This book has some good activities in it but they were mainly from the Pacific Northwest with a few plains tribes. The games did not come with background information as to which tribes played the games or any other information. If you are just looking for random Native american games and not trying to teach using this text then this book is fine.
Book Description
Everyone gets stuck sooner or later. The big question is how do you get unstuck?
People and organizations get stuck because the most ambitious and rewarding work brings with it the most challenges.
Unstuck is a smart, fearless, totally practical guide to turn to for inspiration and immediate solutions. It's meant to be acted on, not just read. And it's based on the proven practices the authors have discovered while working with IBM, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Gap Inc., and many other major companies.
Whether you need to step back to move forward, motivate a struggling team, change your goals, or create a clearer vision, Unstuck helps you diagnose your situation, identify the most important challenges, and implement the right tools and techniques to get things moving again. Now with updated case studies, this is the perfect book to get you and your team unstuck.
Customer Reviews:
I'm not stuck but..........2007-02-13
I passed on the hard copy of Unstuck more than once. When I saw the updated and revised paperback edition, I thought I should grab it. Having recently spent quality time with Ideaspotting, Zag and re-rereading The Brand Gap, it seemed to fit well with them both in spirit and purpose. Also, since Keith Yamashita's firm is mentioned in both The Brand Gap and Zag, I figured there must be something to it.
The idea for the book apparently came out of an MBA course at Yale which in turn led the authors to the realization that very few books "function as in-the-moment tools that let you take instant action." They point out that they ended up creating a set of flash cards which were a hit. Oddly, the book does not come with the flash cards.
Pity.
On the plus side:
* Unstuck tells us that there are seven primary causes, the "serious seven" for getting stuck. One of them probably corresponds to what you and your team are going through.
* Unstuck makes it easy to navigate to the specific type of "stuck" you have. No need to search the book for where you want to go. Just go to page 47 and it will direct you from there.
* There is a very helpful page on the things you need to unify in order to be a successful leader (or individual).
* Unstuck is small, nice to look at and will look good on your shelf.
On the minus side:
* Unstuck seems to be style over substance. It follows the highly visual/minimal text style of The Brand Gap but seems to lack the meat that made The Brand Gap so good.
* Some of the solutions seem to be based too much in common sense while others seem to be too contrived.
* Although one of the main tenants of the book is "systems thinking," you never get the feeling that Unstuck looks at the entire system.
Since I'm not currently stuck, I will read this again and post a review if/when I am. Until then...let's hope those flash cards hit the market.
Have a Moonshot..........2006-07-24
An interesting book, authors used a unique way to write this book. Don't bother reading the entire book; choose a path or paths and off you go to those pages like an encyclopedia. Don't get stuck while trying to connect the dots. I must say a tricky book for average readers. However, on a positive note `The Serious Seven' aspires towards identifying the causes. This book uses case studies to toss some practical ideas and solutions. Vivek Dixit, Houston
Okay, not great.......2006-06-19
The book covers three principles: Admitting you're stuck, Diagnosing why you're stuck, Getting unstuck.
It does provide an excellent insight into systemic repair using aspects of a system: Purpose (central), Strategy, Structure + Process, Metrics + Rewards, People + Interaction, Culture
There are many organizations that don't get this, and center their efforts on only one aspect. The book, I found, more applicable to senior or departmental management rather than individuals.
The conscious employee that reads this would become more knowledgeable (actually more valuable) than their supervisor. Using the knowledge in this book, they would then become threatening to insecure management (of which I would say most management is - merely because most people go into management not because they wish to help others succeed, but rather because they are simply tired of working themselves).
If you are going to purchase the book, purchase it for your department supervisor, CIO, CFO, COO, CEO as well. Otherwise you're going be seen as a problem raising such enlightened ideas in an unenlightened environment.
This, is not the fault of the book, but rather the structures of organizations.
The book advocates identifying informal leaders, making use of silent influentials. However, it also advocates cultural change activities that require the kind of power that only formal leaders have in an organization. The problem is that most dysfunctional managers will not be interested in change, they will not seek out this kind of awareness and if you (as a less powerful employer) try to bring things like progressive awareness into the arena you will be punished.
The problem I found with the book is that it is attempting to tell how you (a regular person) can institute change, but requires that you (as a change agent) have formal power within the organization - a very unlikely scenario, unless you are a progressive maverick type CEO.
An Unusual Tool to Get Unstuck.......2006-01-18
If you've ever been stuck and weren't sure what to do next, or had a team or project that was stuck, unclear on how to move forward, then you want this book.
This is actually less book and more of a tool.
Take the two opening pages of the book which tell you how to use it. And then, depending what part of "stuck" you are in (needing to admit you are stuck, diagnosing why you are stuck or getting unstuck), it sends you to a different page in the book.
That in itself may not be that unusual, but once you land on any given page you will get ideas and connections to other sections or pages in the book.
Can you read this book straight through? Yes, but you might get dizzy from all the connections to various sections. Instead, buy this book and use it. Allow yourself to become engaged in the ideas, drawings, pictures and approaches. But don't just put it on your shelf - at least not at first. Find a situation to try it soon and you'll find you want it close to your fingertips for awhile.
It is fun, different and has some very effective ideas and approaches in it. If you are stuck, the first step might be to buy a copy of Unstuck!
Highly Recommended!.......2005-10-03
The wide world of self-help books has become smaller. In just a few pages, authors Keith Yamashita and Sandra Spataro deliver a large dose of wisdom for individuals, teams, departments and corporations. Motivation jumps off the pages of this short, stocky book in the form of practical exercises and brainstorming sessions. The text, offered in multifont chunks with ample graphics, operates like a workbook or a workshop. It's easy to read - though the structure outlines seven key problems and then scatters their solutions. However, the book provides many real-life examples of corporate success stories and uses a minimum of New Age mumbo jumbo. What's more, it also provides a soulful look at human relations. On the downside, some of the exercises are repetitive and provoke an annoying feeling of been-there-done-that. But those instances are few and the book provides unique opportunities for personal, team and corporate development. For that reason, we recommend it to executives, fundraisers, team leaders and rank-and-file employees.
